U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning said his support for conservative judges may come into play shortly because one of the Supreme Court's liberal members, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, could die in less than a year from pancreatic cancer.
Senator says Justice Ginsburg may die this year
Seeded on Mon Feb 23, 2009 11:52 AM EST (msnbc.com)

Who is this guy to diagnose Ginsburg from afar. What a sad way to get publicity for yourself.
Another excellent example of a GOP compassionate conservative.
How much more do they need to prove their total irrelevance?
Either they're lying or saying something totally contrary. RIP GOP...
Wow. Compassionate guy. Sounds like he can't wait for it to happen so he can fight any one of Obama's choices tooth and nail. What a creep.
Maybe he can look into his crystel ball and predict the death of all the Justices, and at 77 maybe himself as well. What a cad! It would be devine justice for Ruth to retire to enjoy some of her life and outlive this A hole!
Wannabe doctor or wannbe fortune-teller? He's a poor example of someone who is a wannabe leader.
Thank you.....I agree with these comments whole heartedly. This senator appears to feel that running over everyone will advance his carrer. We know this behavior....because we have all experienced it on the job when our coworker attempts to advance themselves by demeaning our efforts and by disregarding reality. He does not exemplify strength....he sadly demonstrates the damage done by irrational, self centered, abuse.
This guy represents the ugliest that politics brings out in people. This is a personal affair for Ginsberg - he has no right to comment on her health situation, especially since he may be (and hopefully is) wrong.
What a bonehead this guy is!! At 77 years old, he needs to be careful how he talks about others.... Hopefully, he will lose his reelection bid and can crawl back into his hole. What a moron.... If I were Judge Ginsburg, I can tell you I'd be making a phone call to him, having a "moment of prayer" with him as we say in the south; that's never a good thing!!
There have been rumors since his last election win that he's losing it himself. He refused to debate his opponent in 2004. The whispers even then were that Bunning was slipping and may not be fully able to form arguments anymore.
I'd like to wish Justice Ginsburg well. She's been a stallwort for Americans' rights for decades and continues to do so. As for Bunning, it's about time to call the bullpen.
WHAT a disgusting thing to say, even to your worst enemy. Proof that the repubs need to be brought down permanantly. Insensitive idiot.
I'm constantly amazed at the ineptness of people who base their whole career on public perception. Politicians on both sides of the aisle can be such idiots. Perhaps they forget that they can no longer sneak into a small town, make some remarks, sneak back out and no one know what was said. I'm a republican, but this was just stupid and came across as totally heartless.
So, big damn deal - the same could be said of any one of us!
How interesting, a Republican says something out of line and he is an insensitive bastard. You all jump on board and say the Republicans should be brought down permanently. I agree that what he said was reprehensible, no doubt about that. But it is amazing that so many of you feel that making comments that are equal to Bunning's are justified.
How about these statements by libs:
I guess stupid and insensitive things can be said by both sides, right?. But I am sure that when the liberals heard these comments all of you lefties were equally appalled at what they had to say werent you? Lord knows none of you would want to be a hypocrite, now would you?
Much like schwannomin, I wish Justice Ginsburg well, and that her family is able to make it through these rough times with her intact. I truly hope, regardless of her politics, that her life is not at its end and that she is able to retire on her terms, not the cancers.
Bunning should have stuck to baseball. He's a disgrace as a Senator.
Hey "Jarhead?" If you paid attention, you would have noticed that only ONE other poster here mentioned the man's party affiliation....YOU were the second. What this Congressman said was STUPID and INSENSITIVE regardless of his party affiliation. And he'd better watch out, what goes around COMES around. God has a way of bringing things full circle....
Jim Bunning needs to resign, NOW. Tom, I agree with your sentament, but in the past decade plus, those most likely to make such remarks have been GOP members, usually as they talk about the health of those they dislike. And yes, Karma will get him.
Waaaa! Those mean old Republicans are being mean again! They should just quit because they are so mean!
Oh grow up. He's not going to resign anymore than that lying slug Burris will.
Who has lied more, Obama or Burris?
Regardless if she dies today or in a year her replacement will be at the least as equally liberal.
It is yet another example of Senatorial comments at their worst. It is too bad that the junior senator from Kentucky has to voice his opinion which such stupid comments. Please Senator, before you say anything about a medical condition, not your own, please stop and think, if that is possible for you.
Tom 286396,
Techie 22 - Another excellent example of a GOP compassionate conservative. Either they're lying or saying something totally contrary. RIP GOP...
Disgusted in NY - Sounds like he can't wait for it to happen so he can fight any one of Obama's choices tooth and nail. What a creep.
Salem 1692 - WHAT a disgusting thing to say, even to your worst enemy. Proof that the repubs need to be brought down permanantly. Insensitive idiot.
Really Tom? Just one other than me? Get the money back for hooked on phonics.
I agree that what he said was abhorrent, I believe I even stated that in my post. I am defending the Republican party because they are not the ones that made the comment, he is. He does not speek for all of the Republican party, just like I never laid claim that whack jobs like you have on theleft speek for all of the left.
Jarhead:
Could you give me the quote of Dick Durban saying that? I'm pretty sure he's been to Iraq and has visited troops. If he's compared their actions to Hitler, I'd like to know. Does youtube have it?
Nevermind jarhead. I just found it. He was referring to the torture perpetrated by personnel at Gitmo. He specifically said these things were perpetrated by "Americans" not troops, soldiers or anyone else in the military.
Because we now know these things were done by the CIA.
He was referring specifically to the inhumanity of what the FBI reported happened at Gitmo. And yes, jarhead, you may not remember, but there was a media firestorm following his remarks.
is this not typical of anyone in politics?bunning should run for dog catcher, his mouth runs and not saying anything !! go away !!!!
Idiot
Note the "apology" that really is not an apology. He is sorry if his comments offender her; that was not his intention. How about just saying your sorry for making such a crass and ugly statement. And could you please enlighten us as to how a dumbass statement like that is supposed to be taken? A joke? A compliment? A get well wish?
He owes an apology to his entire state for the embarrassment of having such a senile old tool representing them. And this has NOTHING to do with being from either party. It was just plain disgusting thing for one human being to say about another but even worse with any political connotations associated with it.
That is an absolutely disgusting remark for anyone to make.
And I'm sure you would love for Cheney to have a healthy life. Bunning stated a fact. Nothing more. He didn't say he wanted her to die. You, however, would probably laugh if Bush was diagnosed with cancer.
Matt, he IMPLIED he was hoping she'd die so he'd get a chance to try and get a Conservative in her place. Your statement that anyone who dislikes Shrub or Vader would either wish them death or laugh about it is disgusting. What we want is for them to go to jail for their crimes, along with their cronnies, but only a truely sick mind would ever wish harm, much less death, on a person, no matter how evil they are. If Cheney and Bush live full, healthy lives, good for them. I just hope they are in prison jumpsuits while they do so, and that they do live a long time, behind bars.
Isn't Ted Kennedy due to cash it in soon, or are we going to waste a bunch of money keeping him alive?
Matt,
He did not state any FACTS. I know a woman who had surgery to remove a cancerous duct from her pancreas 20 years ago. She's still kicking.
Also, the ACS estimates the five year survival rate (if caught early) to be at or above 20%.
Pancreatic cancer has few symptoms, and thus is rarely detected early. Ginsburg, however, was very lucky in that regard.
Are these humans , are tese men totally devoid of the ' milk of human kindness" , unfrortunately the Senator , appears like a vulture , hovering above anxious to sink its obnoxious beaks into a fallen prey. Shame on you Bunning .
Wow, good thing hes puttng a human life over politics...jeez.
Although his comments were in incredibly poor taste and judgment, statistics show that he is correct. At 77, with pancreatic cancer, chances are very likely that she'll not make it a year. I watched the same with my neighbor. They told him 2 months, and he was gone within 2 weeks. Very sad. But hey, let's make that public. Nothing like someone announcing you are going to die...premature to your own death. Nice job idiot Senator Bunning. Hope your political career is also dead within a year.
For goodness sake, how insensative can you get? The Justice isn't a slab of meat, she IS alive and she CAN read and hear what's being said about her. A bit of kindness seems to be in order here. People with serious cancer diagnoses need to process and deal with the issues they face with a modicum of sensativity from the rest of us. Shame on you Senator, Shame, shame, shame.
Just another example of a Compassionate Conservative
An excellent example of the typical pompous and arrogant Repuke slime bags.
How Conservatives like bunning (lower case done on purpose - since he's obviously a lower example of a human being!) can fight to protect the life of an unborn fetus and yet delight in the prospect of death of a living person is beyond my understanding.
When his time comes, may he find his Maker as equally compassionate!
Compassion, like humanity, is highly overated.
First I will say that I am a republican but that is the most revolting thing that one human can say about another. If I lived in KY I would not vote for his re-election in 2010!
I too am a republican and a conservative. The comments of Bunning are unacceptable and inexcusable. I find the comments revolting and do not wish to be lumped into the same lot with such and insensitive human being. His comments do not reflect the majority of Republicans or conservatives. Just a small minded rude little man.
I have to disagree somewhat, cal g. It is a huge reflection of republican POLITICIANS. If you don't remember, one of the main goals of the Bush administration, designed by Karl Rove, was to politicize everything, and I mean everything, to create a one party system in the US. Recall that people were fired for not pledging allegiance to George Bush. And the mess over the AG's was not that they fired them, it is that they fired them for not going after democrats who were running for office. Again politicizing a branch of the government that shouldn't be, same as the Supreme Court. What this senator was saying is that "I hope she dies so we can try to get another conservative judge on the Supreme Court."
And for the record, I think most republicans who are not politicians, are decent people who wouldn't want to be lumped in with guy.
There should be mandatory retirement for Washington politicians as well as Supreme Court Justices no matter what their party affiliation.
Bunning is one of the prime examples of senile behavior. Others fall into it even earlier.
No one knows how long Justice Ginsburg will live, or for that matter how long anyone will live. Whatever her remaining time is I would wish her well.
It is my opinion that at the gates of Hell, Bunning would be welcomed by Lucifer in a catcher's mask and shin guards, with old senile Ronnie Reagan as the umpire. Ball four! Kennedy walks to Heaven.
Shawn ... If Kennedy walks into heaven then hell has an allure.
Totally (no, make that toadally) disgusting headline. Wonder how Sen. Bunning would like to see that headline about himself. What an .......
So politics is now more important than a human beings life. You are a despicable human being Mr. Bunning.
Good luck and good health to you Ms. Ginsburg.
I don't agree with his arm-chair doctoring, especially IF its backed by political motivation. I mean, how would he, as a 77 year old man, like it if a fellow Sen. made a remark about him dying because he is "old"?
Cancer is a hard thing to get over if you survive. But having someone, who may or may not know all the details, come out and give you a year to live just adds to the stress that person may be feeling.
Edit: I also make this appeal---
Keep the conversation about Sen. Bunnings remarks and how you feel about them. This isn't a conservative thing or a liberal thing, so don't make it one. This is about a guy who (although he is a Republican) said something tasteless and should be called out on it.
I disagree with your conservative/liberal comment. bunning himself made it an issue by proclaiming his conservative stance - and almost delighting in the prospect of the death of a liberal SC Justice.
If GOPers want to be seen differently then they need to act it. Look how they all grouped together in the House and voted against the Stimulus Bill. The GOP does not encourage individual thinking...
And the Democrats are such free thinkers. Give me a break.
The fact is that both of them are a bunch of goosesteppers and until you're willing to break with party line voting than we're never going to have progression beyond what corporations allow.
Always the argument from your side is the other guys are jsut as bad. Show me where any Democrat stated something like this.
Tired
Interesting you of all people don't want to make this a "we vs them"....
seems in most posts I've seen of yours - when any democrat does anything - he represents us all....
The New Republican - The Party of Fiscal Responsibility, Ethics and Now - Fair PLay"
beginning January 20 2009
Actually, the hypocrisy is the fact that the republican party runs on the anti-abortion platform, but for 6 years you had a republican president, a majority senate and house that never questioned Bush on anything, and a conservative Supreme Court. Why didn't the subject of abortion ever come up? They were sure quick to send grown americans to their deaths in Iraq, why not outlaw abortion if it's so important to them? Ya think maybe it is such a political tool for them they aren't about to end it? Which makes them what...hypocrites, maybe?
John--did you like the sound of your voice in your head as you typed your response.
Please note -- it had nothing to do with the conversation or the vine at hand. Just another way for you to vent the nothingness that comes from your mind.
Now--as for the vine at hand.
Bunnings comments were reprehensible. I would like to believe that they dont represent the RNC as a whole --- however -- I have found that Compassionate Conservative is an oxymoron!!!!
b dune
You must have me confused with someone else. A majority of my posts take shots at the illogical and hypocritical statements of self-ascribed conservatives that post here. In fact, I'm a registered Democrat who actually works for a progressive organization.
I do like to play devil's advocate from time to time, though. But my shtick is that I try to call out anyone, be it R or D, who makes purposefully misleading, misguided, and misplaced statements.
As for this topic, my appeal is that not all topics need to devolve into partisian bickering. This guys comments were reprehensible regardless of political affliation. Call me an idealist, but I had hoped the comments could have been focused primarly against Bunning and not his party as a whole.
well - you play a good job at devils advocate....
and you are right, the comments should be directed towards the "quoter"....seems though that we (myself included) just cannot stand the hypocrisy on both sides and look for the moment to get the'retaliatory jab in....
the one good thing for you - if addressing truths, half truths, out and out misinformation...we have all given you great ammo........
good day
Just Thnkin
Think again, The Democrats all voted in lock step on that bill as well.
As an Independent I think it needed more thought. The bill has many flaws and took less time to throw together than a high school term paper.
Take your pot shots ... But your aim is as inaccurate as your logic. Party politics is as detrimental as a drunk with a gun.
I'm a republican too & to say that about Justice Ginsburg is uncalled for. What a terrible thing to say. I wish her a speedy recovery. It's amazing she's already back in court. I think that says more for her character and her health than anything. Sen. Bunning is obviously full of himself!
(Always quick to pull the trigger on the "Republican bashing" aren't you b dune)
I wonder how he would feel if someone were making these comments about one of his loved ones. People of Kentucky should really think twice about supporting someone like him!
I'm embarrassed to say that Bunning is my state senator (along with McConnell; what a package). Surely such a completely outrageous statement will make it easier to get rid of him when (and if) he is nominated again. Justice Ginsburg, please accept this heartfelt apology on behalf of myself and the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
Coming from Kansas with Brownback as one of our senators and Tiahrt as one of our representatives, I empathize with your "representatives". I can only hope that they continue to self-destruct since the people of my great state don't seem to be able to vote them out!!!
And the republicans continue to flush themselves down the crapper.
why does everything have to be democrats versus republicans ? Are you sure there is no clueless idiot in the democratic party ?
The democrats invented clueless idiots. This is a partisan thing because Bunning made a disease a partisan issue - the dummy. Sounds like you might be a bit partisan also.
Mrindia, This isn't really a battle between "Dems and Repubs" except for the fact that if Justice Ginsburg does die, Obama will chose the next Justice for Supreme Court. THEN it WILL be a fight between Dems and Repubs. Sounds like Bunning can't wait for that particular battle.
That was a perfectly asinine statement for Bunning to make. He's going to get extremely BAD raps for this remark. But, perhaps we should thank him for it, because, if anything, it will provoke Justice Ginsburg to stay on the bench as long as possible.
People who say i can't do something infuriate me to the point where i can and will prove them wrong. I'm sure Justice Ginsburg is the same way. I hope she makes him eat his words.
Sometimes in the middle of the day Republicans always show their true colors with a slip of the tingue. The sheet falls off and they reveal themselves for what they really are. Not servents of the people but idealogs that use their constituants to further their twisted ideas. Bunning should resign
It is hoped that KY can find someone besides an over-the-hill baseball player to represent them. This guy's thinking is foul.
Clearly this man's reason has parted ways with him. Looking at his age (77) that is not entirely surprising.
Some sort of Age limit is required on senators / congressmen. Half senile geriatrics who don't even have control on thier spincters should not be in the position of power.
We all may die this year, or even tomorrow. There's no need to jinx someone by having a headline like this. Very insensitive.
Good point. No one knows what tomorrow may bring. bunning could easily go before Ginsberg does. I wouldn't be trying to jinx myself were I him. At 77, you never know... Maybe the people of Kentucky won't have to vote him out! (I'm only kidding - I don't wish death on anyone!) :)
Who is this twit to talk about a Supreme Court Justice as if she's dead and ready to be replaced. Disgusting, disrepectful!
What's he saying about Senator Kennedy?
Bunning’s comments are ghoulish, offensive, and disrespectful. I can only imagine what he thinks about people of lesser prominence.
Actually Jim Bunning has exceeded the normal life span for a person born 77 years ago. So he's on borrowed time himself.
Maybe he took a couple of curve balls off his noggin when he used to play for a living--it was before batting helmets and designated hitters. I predict he'll be yanked from the Big Ballgame of Life on October 31, 2011, succumbing to terminal stupidity. Hard to diagnose, but we all know it when we see it.
This is the typical wish of a Repiglican. Jim Bunning was just as hateful when he was a pitcher in baseball. The man does not have an ounce of class . Typical Republican. I am sure Ginsburg felt positive when she read this.
I'm a Democrat - but I don't think it fair to put all Republicans in the low class. I hope some of them have the balls to call him out for this repulsive comment.
And I do send my wishes and prayers for a speedy recovery for SC Justice Ginsberg.
I also appreciate the comments here of Republicans and Democrats alike who have been appalled by bunnings comment. It's nice to know that you all feel that life is more critical than politics...
This b*stard sounds like he's licking his chops waiting for her to pass!
Not only is Bunning an idiot, he's completely tactless and compassionless. Kentucky, is this really the best you can do? Dump this jerk pronto.
Disgusting!
Geez Bunning don't drool all over yourself. Since when did you become an Oncologist? Do the republicans have any decency? Or is it all about who we can bump off the fastest? Not a democrat here, but this type of covetous behavior lacks any moral standing. I used to be a republican but I have watched them stumble all over themselves repeatedly running after a dollar. What a sad party and how they've missed the point.
Conservative Republican Jim Bunning, probably a devout Christian with all the tact, pity and feelings of "Atilla the Hun". He will make Rush Limbaugh very proud.
