How about asking for everybody's help? Palin knows that her emails, especially those concerning the development of state government policy, belong to the state and to the federal government if federal money is used. What they should ask is that every email interchange between Sarah Palin or her staff, and others, be turned over by anyone who has a copy. Most people save this stuff to cover themselves in case there is a question about who authorized a decision, and to prove that their dissent was overridden, or that they supported a project for particular reasons. I think people would be glad to comply, and given her history of strong armming people who disagree with her, happy to tell their story.

Mark my words something will be found and the only ones not believing that bought the "hiking" lie Sanford gave. She either had more evidence of stealing money or abuse of power coming out and she choose to step down in hopes it will go away. Anyone thinking she is doing it for other reasons I have a hiking story to sell ya.

I wonder if the thought ever occurred to her that if she just stopped being corrupt, no money would have to be "wasted" to keep an eye on her. Oh, of course it has. That's why she's stepping down. However I am not sure the teleprompter would help Palin, it did take her six years to graduate. She may not be able to read fast enough. Actually, you are free to request the e-mails of those politicians under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). The reason we are waiting for her e-mails is because she and her staff admittedly and intentionally used non-government accounts for government business, which just so happens to be illegal. This bastion of ethics intentionally subverted transparency of information laws. Not coincidentally, the Bush/Cheney administration "lost" millions of email messages, including those used to conduct Republican party business on the taxpayers' dime.

As for the job losses - you can blame that one mostly on the corrupt corporations that were given a free ride under the repubs and this recession started under Bush's watch. This is not something that will go away overnight. What happened on Wall Street last October had far reaching consequences and we are still feeling the effects of it.

Actually, the number of job losses have been cut in half since January. But hey, if Rush, Bill, and Ann don't have to worry about facts, why should you?

And there are all kinds of ways to make a hard drive crash, including viruses. I spent over $2,400 trying to recover data files from a failed hard drive 4 years ago. I had not done any backups of my Mac. I ended up losing all email files, all address files, and over half of my customer data files. Now I back up my hard drive every week.

A stand alone PC is quite different than an e-mail server with redundancy. Raid-5 disk packs, mirrored servers, 99.999 % availability, back-up robots, just to name a few are all part of specifications utilized for government systems, Yahoo and other mailing services.

My guess would be that depending on how the disk administration configuration is set all end user devices would handle data as desired. I believe that all operating systems have options to set destructive delete or merely overwrite on the disk packs.

I was attempting to tackle the problem from the e-mail server side where policy would dictate not only the above mentioned but also possibilities of having mirrored servers, hot-swap RAID 5 disk sets, back-up robots (optical or tape), etc. Thereby making e-mail retrieval a simple database query.

If the government e-mail system has at least the bare essentials of a corporate system then the data is there and easily retrievable. Certainly the Yahoo systems, which is said to have utilized private e-mail addresses for government business, would be available 99,995% of the time per mirrored pair.

I would agree with you. The only way for data to totally disappear is through an inside job. That is, a person that has not only knowledge of system architecture but also knowledge of logical and physical access to that structure. All forms of Internet communications go through some kind of server. Mail servers are set to keep a FIFO stack of historical data for a set period of time. After which, the data is compressed and stored indefinitely utilizing some form of mass storage device. End user devices are less reliable when it comes to data retrieval.

If bush data was lost and palin data was lost then either the government system is inadequate or data has been manipulated.
