The vetting process for the Presidency is brutal in the US. I guess it's a good thing. All candidates are subjected to smears and downright ridiculous side issues - how they respond to these challenges gives some insight into how they will respond to the even greater challenge of running the government.

And Obama is popular because he can read a teleprompter. He had zero qualifications, has never ran anything, many radical ties, but he could read a teleprompter.

Personally I would rather have a non politician in office because wre are getting the same old crap from the same old people who have been in office for way too long. Politics is indeed a dirty, brutal business. I'm not bashing Ms. Palin, but I don't think she was ready to handle the types of things she encountered during and after the campaign. The enormous amount of stress seems to have taken its toll. But with that being said, Nick Ayers gave Ms. Palin some very good advice, so why didn't she follow it?

Not every politician uses teleprompters. Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, GHW Bush, and Clinton did. Carter did sometimes. Don't know about Ford. The problem with GW Bush and teleprompters came from the fact that he was slightly or somewhat dyslexic. He simply could not operate the foot pedal and read from one at the same time. When he had someone else operate the pedal, it was even worse because he would lose his place, begin to ad lib, and completely lose it. His attempt to use the teleprompter was responsible for many of his famous gaffs.

All Presidents (escept Truman and possibly Ford) since FDR have used teleprompters for important speeches. This enables them orally give exactly the same speech that was handed out to reporters in advance. There are simply too many reporters to ever attend any speech in person and giving out remarks in advance is a way of being fair to all of them.

GW Bush often gave out "prepared remarks" as they are called and then delivered something completely different or omitted huge sections of the remarks. This caused lots of misunderstandings between him and the press, especially in Europe where his remarks had already "gone to bed" in newspapers. Often "amended" remarks were not distributed until late the next day as his staff tried to salvage his speeches. This was one reason thet GW Bush contended that the European press hated him.

GW Bush's "handlers" always cringed when he took questions because he almost always bobbled all or part of it and usually managed to offend multiple members of the press in the process.

You will notice that Obama uses a teleprompter only for "prepared remarks" which have been previously distributed to reporters. That way his speech always agrees with what was distributed. No misunderstandings or misquotes. Then immediately after the prepared remarks the teleprompter goes down when he takes questions. He is just as articulate when he takes questions and ad libs his answers. This is consistent with the training of a lawyer who sticks closely to opening and closing statements and ad libs questioning and ad hoc motions.

Palin was a miscalculation. Her youth and vitality was meant to offset McCain's age and stayed demeanor. You need more than enthusiasm to be President. While I have no love for either party, Obama got it right by balancing his ticket with an old Washington player who added gravitas to his side and added to voter confidence. With all due respect, Palin was way out of her league and her appearences and the debates cemented that view in the electorate's mind. Frankly, given how she has handled her job in Alaska and the political gamesmanship at that level, I am glad she never got a heartbeat way from the Presidency. I hope she can salvage her family life; it's more important than all the accolades power brings. If her star rises again, I hope she is better prepared for the harsh realities National stature brings.

Okay, let's not go overboard here. Dems have unplanned pregnancies just as much as Repubs (I imagine. I can't say I've seen the poll on that one, but I'm speculating). The difference is Dems give women and men a wide array of family planning choices. When there is a birth, they don't proceed to ostracize and condemn the pregnant woman. They don't insist that she continue with the pregnancy whether or not she's financially, physically, or mentally capable. And they don't set as public policy the dismantling of all gov't assistance for her and her baby once the child is born.

What is fascinating about the Palin case was that both Sarah and Bristol were allowed the choice to keep their children, and both expected the privacy to make that personal family choice, the very same choice Sarah and the rest of the Conservative wing wants to take away from all other women.

I keep wondering where all of this national support is. Democrats loathe her, and she pretty much buried McCain with moderates. She still doesn't poll well with them. She has stronger support with Republicans, but getting 65-70% of a group that comprises only 20-25% of the voting public isn't going to get you elected dog-catcher. And abruptly quitting the first major job you've had in public life in a blizzard of chaotic, rambling, cryptic non sequiturs (that only reinforce her image as a dumbed-down, slightly crazier George W. Did they do that to Obama...hell no, he wrote two books and both books must be the absolute truth. Where is his birth certificate? Where does he get his money. Why did he spend 20 years in a hate filled church? Why is he best friends with a home grown terrorists? Here was a woman who was just a down to earth person like 90% of America and it frightened the democratic news media to death, because she was pretty, had a personality and was accepted by the conservative members of America. She ran the city government and then went on to governing a whole state. What the hell has Obama managed...not even a Dairy Queen, but the news media told you that he was much more qualified for his position than Palin hers. I believe that she just got tired of being drug through the dirt by the press. I can't say that I blame her one bit for getting out of politics...it is the most corrupt system we have ever had...and they are running our country. God have mercy on our souls.

If she had let the people around her do their job, she would have been able to continue to do hers without getting stressed out. What is fascinating about the Palin case was that both Sarah and Bristol were allowed the choice to keep their children, and both expected the privacy to make that personal family choice, the very same choice Sarah and the rest of the Conservative wing wants to take away from all other women.

You do know who wanted woman to go out and work right (the democrats.. and it was to help our country) while the "boys" were in service to their country. Then when the "boys" came home and many who didn't their wives/moms had to work.

Unless a woman is very wealthy and can hire a staff at home, it is almost impossible to do a good job on family and job. Even with good staffs, it is almost impossible. Children need a consistent primary caregiver, and the women who think they don't, shouldn't have children.

Last time I checked you couldn't get pregnant without some help. Either a partner or you took it into your own hands (artificial means) to get there. IT takes TWO. You aren't alone. A primary caregiver can be more than the woman. I know plenty of men who do a damn good job of rasing their children.

The bottom line is that this woman (if all you Sarah bashers had read the article) QUIT. SHE QUIT becuase of two reasons. 1) the polictical left machine started a campaign to push her out by bringing lawsuits that would distract her term AND 2) she had paid out of her OWN POCKET over 500,000 so they were trying to bankrupt her!!.

Of course they wanted to embroil her in bitter lawsuits so they could use that against her later... comment on how she handled herself during this time by doing all these bad things (like spending Alaska's money to defend herself and how she was distracted) - what they didn't count on was her saying F- you to the people doing it, stepping OUT OF THE WAY so ALaska could move forward and the money be spent on ALASKA and not paying for these stupid lawsuits which was hurting her own family.

Tell me if that wasn't a smart decision. She doesn't have to play the game people. She doesn't care if she has a political career moving foward but the press can't believe that and has got to find out the "real reason" because people today DON'T TELL THE TRUTH.. Well Tammylou...if Sarah "quit because she had to" or for a "personal break" why didn't she just say that? As an Alaskan living in Wasilla, I'm mad as hell with her because I voted her in office and I believe more than anything else she could have been up front with the people of her state. Many people in politics, business and within the general workforce have quit jobs for the very reasons that you mentioned and everyone is familar with those reasons and those type reasons rearly get a raised eyebrow. The problem with Sarah is she gave a rambling resignation with no CLEAR reason and then got mad at everyone for not understanding why she quit. This is her FAULT period! LOS ANGELES- Details of Sarah Palin's plans after she steps down as Alaska governor emerged Sunday after a California Republican group disclosed that the former vice presidential nominee is slated to appear at a private gala next month.

Since announcing she plans to resign July 26, Palin hasn't made clear if she intends to return to private life after leaving office or will begin laying the foundation for a possible presidential bid in 2012.

Republican Women Federated of Simi Valley said in a statement that Palin is scheduled to appear at the group's 50th anniversary gala at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library on Aug. 8.

Group spokeswoman Pat Saraceno said the invitation-only event is closed to the media. Several hundred people are expected. The master of ceremonies for the event will be conservative radio talk-show host and filmmaker John Ziegler.

Reagan library spokeswoman Melissa Giller said the event will be held in a cavernous pavilion that houses the former president's jet, Air Force One. The hilltop library is located about 40 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

Saraceno said Palin "embodies the values that we hold dear: faith, family, country first and service."

"We are honored to call her our friend and advocate," she said. "She is an amazing human being whose aspirations are simply to bring out the best in people."

office did not respond to e-mail or phone messages.

The appearance at the library that enshrines the legacy of the nation's 40th president is certain to stoke speculation about Palin's political ambitions beyond Alaska.

In an interview with the Washington Times, she said she is eager to campaign for Republicans and independents and even Democrats who share her views on limited government, national defense and energy independence.

The 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee shocked even her closest friends when she announced earlier this month she would resign more than a year before her first term ends. At that time, she expressed concern over being a lame-duck governor as well as criticism aimed at her and her family.

Sen. John McCain of Arizona, who led the 2008 Republican presidential ticket, said on NBC's "Meet the Press" Sunday that he is confident Palin will remain "a major factor" on the national scene even after she steps down as governor.

Earlier this year, Palin was offered a speaking role at an annual congressional fundraiser in Washington, which turned into a will-she-or-won't-she mystery about whether the Alaska governor would even appear.

Organizers replaced Palin as the keynote speaker after she wavered over accepting the invitation, and Palin

said she never confirmed that she would speak. The governor eventually appeared at the dinner but did not address the crowd.

Saraceno said she respected Palin's right to change her plans at any time. She said in an e-mail that correspondence with the governor's office has been "positive but cautious," but she added, "we know she will come."

Everyone talks about how Tina Fey buried her on SNL. The funny part about it (if you listen to Fey's impression) is that she almost always quoted Palin verbatim. The things Palin said were just intrinsically funny and stupid.

It isn't hypocritical at all to promote the cause of women in general and still reject a woman who isn't qualified for public office on the basis of a nonexistent record, no rhetorical skills, a demonstrated lack of knowledge about basic policy matters, etc. And it looks like the voters made a good decision. She couldn't even cut it as governor of Alaska. Imagine if she was a heartbeat away from the Presidency.

And I know it's like asking gravity to stop making things fall, but if the GOP is ever going to figure out what the American voter wants, they're going to have to stop blaming the media for everything in the known universe that doesn't go their way. People have eyes, ears and brains. They watched her demonstrate again and again a complete ignorance of policy, world events, the scope and limitations of the job she was seeking, etc. You can't argue that her inability to answer a basic question was the media's fault. I don't think "What newspaper do you read?" is a gotcha question like "Who is the leader of Madagascar?" A politician (or any adult who isn't mentally disabled) shouldn't be stumped by a question like that.

For all of their current disagreements over the direction of the Republican Party, Limbaugh and McCain agreed on one thing. They both called a young Chelsea Clinton ugly - and worse.

Exactly what I have wondered for several months. The only reason Palin has been in the limelight is because the Liberal media has put her there. If all the negative things about her are true, why does the media and the bashers here give her the time of day?
