What concerns me about this is who is really pushing this..is it big businesses of health care and lobbyist or people asking honest questions and getting little in the way of answers. I have to question the validity of any congressperson claiming that one party is causing the questions which upset democrates pushng for this . Just announced on Fox Senate leaders just had a closed door meeting about health care and Rep. wrote an amendment that Congress would have to be on the same healthcare plan that the people would be required to be on. Guess what? It passed 11-10 all the democrats voted against the amendment. Said there would be a meeting about it at White house today. Guess the protesters are doing the job.

Let's see, where to start.

1. The Fox "news" story is incorrect on its face about some supposed vote to put Congress on the proposed national health care plan in the following ways: First, if the vote was along party lines it could not pass 11-10 with all Democrats voting against since Republicans don't have a majority. Second, the motion is contrary to the Democrats proposed plan which does not require ANYONE to be on the government plan, and it's not even clear there will even be a government plan offered since there's not a final plan to vote on yet.

2. The second President Bush was famous for screening his "public" audiences to keep out anyone who would disagree with his policies. Obama does not.

3. While some, perhaps most, of the protestors are ordinary citizens, they are being organized and advised as to how to act by the Republican party and, more importantly, health industry lobbying groups. The reason I'm not sure about how many of these people are ordinary citizens is that there was a so-called "spontaneous" demonstration when the Florida ballots were being recounted in the 2000 election. It turned out that at least all of the people in the front of the crowd whose faces could be identified were all staffers of various Republican Senators and Congressmen. So they hardly represented ordinary citizens.

Anti-war protests were as loud or louder than this and they were hailed as the will of the people that brought us to the loss in Southeast asia (though generals from the cong now writing memoirs were mystified after we routed them at the TET offensive then left). I attended one such event and it was actually the Democrats who were truly staging it. Folks came in in buses with signs manufactured by their union--all clean and uniform.

The other side of the street were actually not only Republicans as this story would have you believe. There were a large number of independents (fully 1/3 of the Seattle suburban residents are independents), a good number with signs saying Democrats against Obamacare, and Republicans too. All are terrified of what the socialization of medicine means to those rationed out of care or those who need the newest treatments to cure them and are simply told to go die.

We live too close to Canada here and see the poor unfortunate Canadians who already pay huge taxes to pay for their failed system (see Claude Gastonguay--Canadian Health Care System We so Envy Lies in Ruins) then have to come to the US and pay from their pockets to get, for example, the effective treatment for colon cancer that is denied across the board in Canada.

Rationing--Hugely expensive. Yes the protestors are for real and they are individual voices in terror for their lives and those of their loved ones. One Canadian friend said--"Please don't do this. Where will we--where will the world come for care if you too fall to Socialism?"

Please notice everyone does come here. Ever hear of anyone going to Canada for care or UK or France? Of course not. This will cost us more for less! Of course we are protesting and many like me are mugwumps. I've voted for both parties every election since I could vote and that is quite a few!

I loved the bussed in comment. Those who want to meet their representatives at some of the town halls meetings have to drive 1 - 2 hours to get to the meeting. Citizens are so angry they will car-pool to get there! Some representatives are reported to be holding meetings outside their districts. Ha anyone else heard this?

My representative - Tim Ryan - will only go on talk shows and fundraisers. His schedule is too full to have a town hall meeting. He reminds me of a representative in PA a number of years ago. First election, held picnics with bear and kelbausi, wore blue jeans and plaids work shirts. The next election, he wore a suit & tie and only hobnobbed with rich supporters. His district dumped him.

What we need to do is force our government to accept our views, put this on the 2010 ballot, put the full legislation (with no 3am changes/additions/retractions) and let the voters voices be heard! If the government passes this against the will of the people, if they rush this through without time for dialogue on the final version of the bill, then we should all go to our employers and request they stop withholding federal taxes. We then pay at the end of the year and we pay what we think is fair. Then we will see how the government likes us, the tax paying voters, running the government and deciding how our tax dollars are spent (which is basically how it is supposed to be anyway).

What is going on is that a huge majority of main stream Americans greatly dislike (with a passion) several things that are going on with respect of the present administration and congress as it relates to our healthcare and the proposed Democrat produced healthcare "re-creation" legislation that the Democrat house leadership (namely Pelosi and Waxman) have attempted to strongarm and "fast track" secretively from the public. As more details of this proposed legislation has become known, it is wrought with extremely concerning changes and details and is also designed to be a pre-requisite for a government take-over of healthcare. Along with the expressed sentiments of Obama, Frank, Pelosi, Schumer and some others (who have been recorded on video and audio as being supportive of a one-payer system, which is nothing more than socialism), main stream America is concerned! They have also become very concerned with the fact that the inclusion of the proposed healthcare changes are not cost-effective and frankly, are likely to present a disastrous increase to the deficit (and increased taxation) while dismantling halthcare that a large percentage of the Americans do not want touched!

All of the complaints made by Americans have seemingly fallen on deaf ears of the Democrat congressmen who are deemed to be drones to Obama and Pelosi. In spite of outrage from Americans, the Democrats have intended to continue right along with their crap legislation, even to the point of shoving down our throats. What you are seeing now is an authentic revolt of the American people (and it is not sponsored by anyone) to their congressmen in these town hall meetings, expressing that they want to be heard (and not ignored as they have been) and that the majority of Americans like their current healthcare and do not want healthcare re-creation as is proposed by the Dems, nor do they want a government take-over of our healthcare. Plenty of ideas have been run by these boards. But the over riding theme is the general direction that we are being led into by this leadership. It's an over all philosophy that gets bantered about.

I think that each person at these meetings ought to be heard. If they are angry, that's fine. Being over bearing doesn't allow for discourse. But, when you are frustrated because you voted someone into office who doesn't represent you the way that they should... it boils over. Sometimes a boiling over is a good thing. Ask Paul Revere.

If we think this is outrageous... what do you think it will be like when traditional Americans that have worked their whole lives get displaced and out of work. The Constitution does not give you the right to free heathcare.

On the contrary the Constitution limited Congress power to "tax without regard to any census of enumeration", which means that redistribution of income was prohibited by the original Constitution. The founders even contemplated limiting taxes on incomes to 10% but, instead decided on the census of enumeration test above because it prohibited Congress from taxing individuals in the first place.

If Obama and the Democrats get their way on these matters we will be bankrupt as a nation and as individuals... imagine life with no money... zero money... this is what they propose to you in the name of self sacrifice for the sake of others who have had all of the same opportunities as you. This is not about the truely needy... there has always been help for them as their ought to be... this is about people who have a sense of entitlement and refuse to lift a finger on their own behalf except to ask for handouts from the coffers of government.

So, if I don't agree with the way the health care plans are being handled, I'm a fake. I do support some reform to are health care industry. That doesn't mean I'm some rube for the Republicans because I think the government is going about it wrong. It also doesn't mean I'm a racist because I don't support every move the President makes. I didn't support President Bush on most things he tried to do or did. But as an American the man was still my President, the same as President Obama is now. This doesn't mean I have to support everything he is trying accomplish. One of the reasons people are so upset with this is because they are trying to do it at break neck speed. People want to know what their going to get before it's law, not after. How many people on NV have read this bill, how many legislators have read it? We don't know what we're are going to get. For all of you naysayers on health care reform, read the original bill as presented (H.R. 3200), and get copies of all of the hundreds of amendments that have been passed by four of the five House/Senate committees once they are released. Many of those amendments have been proposed by Republican members of the committees and PASSED by the committees. Whether they remain in the final bill will be seen once the House takes up its three versions and once the Senate takes up its two versions, then the conference committee works out the differences. I personally know that more and more Americans are going to wake up soon and realize that they can no longer afford the current insurance plans they have, or their employers will be dropping the plans they offer for the same reason. As one Kansas business man said, he can't afford the 42% increase in his premiums his company just notified him of, especially at a time when that company has shown profits of well over 200% in the past year. Who do you people think is paying for the 400% profits the major companies are reporting lately? Who do you think is paying for the millions being spent on lobbying and advertising to defeat this reform effort? Check out who funds all of these anti-reform websites that are appearing. Every one of them are being funded by ex-Republican office holders or their former staff members, members or ex-members of private health care companies (some who have been charged repeatedly....and convicted.....of medical fraud), as well as pharmaceutical and insurance companies. They are the same websites that are publishing the "manuals on Town Hall disruption" that people are actually carrying with them to their protests. And YES, there has been proof that at least one of these organizations (FreedomWorks) IS paying for bussing people from one town hall to another. Just look at some of the videos and you will see some of the same people at each event. Town hall meetings should be open ONLY to the constituents in THAT voting district. Those are the people the elected official should be able to dialog with.

BECAUSE THERE IS NO CONCRETE PLAN THAT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED YET!!! in my opinion, Shouldn't we all wait for a real plan to be put together, reading and understanding what will ultimately be proposed, before people risk popping a gasket, having a stroke, raising hell about something they no NOTHING ABOUT?

The ONE thing we all should understand is that healthcare, as it is currently, the status quo, will continue to increase in costs and be beyond the reach of most of us, if NOTHING is done. Being fair, at this juncture in the healthcare discussion, I would applaud President Obama and his team for having the foresight to realize this, and most importantly, having the balls to try to work on a fix for a healthcare system that is by any yardsticlk of measurement, broken, and getting worse as time goes on.

The United States spent over $2.2 trillion on health care in 2007 and nothing proposed by the Democrats does anything to reduce that number!!! The problem is the amount being spent on health care, not getting people covered, and by not reducing that amount health care will remain every bit as big a problem going forward as it is today, actually a bigger one with the proposed legislation that is sure to increase costs, not deter costs. The uninsured already get their "subsidized public option" through the emergency rooms and all of the people who actually pay for their medical care pick up the tab, just like they still will but instead of having an extra 20% or so on your medical bills you'll pay that amount or more in taxes.

Now there is another MSNBC poll linked to this article that asks “Do the disruptions at town halls hurt the democratic process?” In this poll 61% support the protesters. The disruptions at town hall meetings are the “democratic process”.

Barbara Boxer has said that there are people at these protests “wearing Nazi insignias.” I haven’t seen any film clips or pictures to support her accusation as of yet. Under the circumstances they would have to prove that those individuals were not Democrat plants. Add lame accusations of paid protesters, organized mobs and other language that calls to memory historic statements by English rulers when facing Americans before the American Revolution.

They are rejecting the authority of the American People and ignoring their oath of office. It’s the Constitution stupid. I have called the elected representative of my district of Colorado – John Salazar - four times to request a town hall meeting in our area. I was told on every occasion that there is no town hall meeting planned and there will not be one unless he gets enough requests. I started calling friends and had them call friends to request a THM and am still getting the same answer. When I asked how many calls have been placed to request the meeting I was told it is against Congressional ethics to give me that information. The interest to carry out the will of the people is nonexistent in Colorado and Washington. How about your state?

I live not too far from Houston. Believe it or not, it is one of the most diverse towns in the world. When a Hispanic/Asian/Anglo runs for office, the votes are not divided straight down racial lines.

People come here who do not speak a word of English, some without any education, and still find work. In fact, they actually work so hard that they can send extra money back to their families in other countries.

But guess which demographic can't "find" work? Guess which demographic always votes for more Gov't benefits? Guess which demographic, despite having the most money spent on their health, welfare, and education still finds a way be dependent on the Gov't?

Maybe there is a relationship between being dependent on Gov't and poor performance.

Oh, I know, you'll just say it's racists like me holding them down.

But think about this: Muslim Iranians and Palestinians come here and work hard making a good living while advancing the lots of their families. Wouldn't these so called racists hold them down? I mean if we were going to hold someone down, after 9-11, wouldn't it have been them?

Just remember, 98% isn't a racial stereotype, it is racism.

The President and Congress are doing exactly what they said they woud do in the election. The people heard the competing plans for healthcare and were certainly aware of the philosphically different approaches to government that the parties have. They chose Barack Obama and the Democrats overwhelmingly in the last two elections. The people disrupting the attempts by elected representatives to have a discussion with the people they work for are not in the mainstream. They are in the extreme. They are no different than that leftist code pink protestors who would not let conservatives speak. The people in the mainstream are quietly watching the two extremes shout at one another and hope, with some trepidation, that their elected officials will not forget who won the election.

I hear this "it's for the good of the people" from the media more and more. And they might add that they think that "we the people don't know what's good for us!"

I guess they may have a point! After our bitter vote that was based on "blinding anger"...look who's running the country.

You have repeated that line several times. This might come as a surprise to you, but a recent Gallup poll had 40% of Americans calling themselves conservatives and 20% said they are liberal. If you have followed the Newsvine polls from articles where the posters voted, like this one, it has been consistently 2 to 1 for the conservative side. So, the posters reflect the general population. Obama won by 7% with the winning margin coming from independent voters and a few Republican crossovers. It is these voters who are causing Obama’s numbers to decline as of late. Not a good sign for next year if you are a lib.

I think a lot of people here are missing the point. Almost everyone agrees we need to reform the health care system. What we don't agree with is buying a very expensive pig in a poke that will alter our country forever. Change is not always good and true or not a lot of the things we are hearing make things worse, not better. The Democrats have been pushing health care reform for over 20 years. Taking a few months to get it right is not going to hurt but of course Obama/Nancy etal realize that the more people learn the less they like it so if they don't get it passed soon they won't be able to get it passed.

Obama only gave Pelosi his wish list. Due to a leadership failure on his part the left wing loonies in Congress are actually writing the thing and we know now well they did with the economy since 2006 and the fine stimulus bill they crafted and passed it the dark of night.

A dialog is nice but if you are not being heard sometimes you have to raise your voice. A few friends called their "representatives" to protest this thing and as soon as they found out they were against it they were hung up on.

There was a comment above about the protesters interfering with the lefts ability to communicate with their representatives. Even if you didn't vote for them and may not agree with them, once they are elected they represent everyone in the district. Obama is my president, like it or not. The congressmen holding the town halls work for everyone in the district, not just the ones who voted for them.

I for one have tried taking a quiet peacefull tact with these people to express my opinion and they have done nothing but ignore me and everyone else. They have their agenda and they are taking it all of the way, regardless of what anyone else feels or says. Hopeful American doesn't sound very hopeful...Believe it or not, every change discussed in Ed's post is what this legislation is about. Discussing specific issues instead of saying "Odumbo is a socialist" must blow your mind, I know. It's a radical new approach- it's called doing something to fix the mess we're in.

What's more amazing is that there is actually agreement from both sides to enact those changes. The fight is over how to pay for it and how much money the insurance companies get to take from the taxpayers. 1. Millions of seniors die every year, because they can't afford to pay for their health care.
2. Medicare will be bankrupt and defunct by 2015.
3. Health care costs rise at more than twice the cost of living.
4. The health insurance industry is paid 350 BILLION DOLLARS A YEAR to shuffle papers and act as a middle man between patients and doctors.
5. Check who is funding these "grassroots" organizations that are opposing reform. Its not you and me.

I am a registered Democrat who would have voted for Ron Paul if the dumbed down GOP had voted for him to run against Obama. No way would I vote for Sarah Palin and John McCain. Ron Paul is the only Republican who made any sense. We all live in the USA and must work together to make the country a better place for all who live here.

What's so funny about all this talk here from the scared, angry white people with health insurance, and the whiney blowhards on talk radio, is how they all try and convince themselves and anyone still close enough to be yelled at that this malcontent is a majority view. When in reality it's only from the likes of that hardcore 20% that continued to favorably approve of the Bush/Cheney regime thoughout it's corrupt bungling of just about everything, based only on political party affiliation. And of course the racists, who can't stand the fact that a black man (who wasn't even born here!) is in the white house. And most importantly the HUGE money interests of the insurance industry and it's well oiled machine.
