I agree. It is nice that our President received the award. However, it is a bit premature. He really has not accomplished anything concrete yet. Yes, he gives good speeches, but I don't see how that alone is worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize.

I know this is going to generate all sorts of hateful remarks, but George Bush liberated an entire country and received nothing for it! His father saved Kuwait and nothing for him either. Bill Clinton has done SO much good since leaving office. He deserves one as well.

I am all for considering Obama for the award once he has been President for awhile, but this is way too early.

It didn't happen "all in nine months" because all the votes had to be cast in early Febuary. He had been President for two weeks. Therefore, it was what he did basically before being sworn in.

Personally I don't care each and every year they * award * this prize. Let's face it this comes from a country where shooting heroin is legal.

I gave up trying to get ANYONE to provide just 1 accomplishment, other than words, that he has done.

That is because there are none as of today. This was a joke, and I accept it at that.

This has stirred up passions, but not the good kind. I wish we had a president that would actually do something that made him deserving of such an award, instead of just talking about it all the time.

Generally the winners of the Peace Prize have either found a novel way to advance human well-being or put themselves at extraordinary risk to attempt to do so. Obama has not really done either yet. So I can see why he shouldn't win the award. But he has drastically altered trajectory of the last remaining superpower. I think people here in the states underestimate how much our country's direction, and even rhetoric matter to the rest of the world. Changing that IS a big deal. He talks a good talk, no doubt. But when that rhetoric is tied to the aspirations of the world, it can inspire even the Nobel committee. There is nothing wrong with being proud of that accomplishment. I'm proud the U.S. hasn't turned the corner of cynicism where a Bush or a Clinton are the only people we're still able to elect.

I know this really infuriates people on the Right. I find it entertaining that people who couldn't name ten Nobel Peace Laureates get so furious over this one. But really what matters is we always talk about winning hearts and minds and hampering al Qaeda recruiting. This is a guy who is actually doing it.

Actually the reason Noble started the Peace Prize. He know what harm his invention of TNT would and could bring. That is why he took the money he earned from it to try to encourage and award those who sought peace.

I feel sorry for past winners, because this cheapens the award to the point that it's now totally meaningless, sort of like the Academy Award for Best Makeup, or Best Costume Design.

The blame clearly belongs with the entire Bush administration of hawks. This includes the criminals Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and more I can't recall. Their foreign policy was to tell the rest of the world that we didn't need them. If they didn't agree with us then they were the enemy. Some people are saying that Obama hasn't done anything to deserve this honor. They are short sighted and just plain wrong. President Obama in reaching out to the rest of the world with an open hand instead of a sword is putting this country back on the path to being a respected nation again.

Often the most difficult step to take to solving differences with another person or nation is to reach out and begin the process. I stand before you as someone who is not opposed to war in all circumstances. The Civil War was one of the bloodiest in history, and yet it was only through the crucible of the sword, the sacrifice of multitudes, that we could begin to perfect this union and drive the scourge of slavery from our soil.

I don't oppose all wars. My grandfather signed up for a war the day after Pearl Harbor was bombed, fought in Patton's army. He fought in the name of a larger freedom, part of that arsenal of democracy that triumphed over evil.

I don't oppose all wars.

After September 11, after witnessing the carnage and destruction, the dust and the tears, I supported this administration's pledge to hunt down and root out those who would slaughter innocents in the name of intolerance, and I would willingly take up arms myself to prevent such tragedy from happening again.

I don't oppose all wars. What I am opposed to is a dumb war. What I am opposed to is a rash war. What I am opposed to is the cynical attempt by Richard Perle and Paul Wolfowitz and other armchair, weekend warriors in this administration to shove their own ideological agendas down our throats, irrespective of the costs in lives lost and in hardships borne.

What I am opposed to is the attempt by political hacks like Karl Rove to distract us from a rise in the uninsured, a rise in the poverty rate, a drop in the median income, to distract us from corporate scandals and a stock market that has just gone through the worst month since the Great Depression.

That's what I'm opposed to. A dumb war. A rash war. A war based not on reason but on passion, not on principle but on politics.

Now let me be clear: I suffer no illusions about Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal man. A ruthless man. A man who butchers his own people to secure his own power.... The world, and the Iraqi people, would be better off without him.

But I also know that Saddam poses no imminent and direct threat to the United States, or to his neighbors...and that in concert with the international community he can be contained until, in the way of all petty dictators, he falls away into the dustbin of history.

I know that even a successful war against Iraq will require a U.S. occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences.

I know that an invasion of Iraq without a clear rationale and without strong international support will only fan the flames of the Middle East, and encourage the worst, rather than best, impulses of the Arab world, and strengthen the recruitment arm of al-Qaeda.

I am not opposed to all wars. I'm opposed to dumb wars. So for those of us who seek a more just and secure world for our children, let us send a clear message to the president.

You want a fight, President Bush? Let's finish the fight with Bin Laden and al-Qaeda, through effective, coordinated intelligence, and a shutting down of the financial networks that support terrorism, and a homeland security program that involves more than color-coded warnings.

You want a fight, President Bush? Let's fight to make sure that...we vigorously enforce a nonproliferation treaty, and that former enemies and current allies like Russia safeguard and ultimately eliminate their stores of nuclear material, and that nations like Pakistan and India never use the terrible weapons already in their possession, and that the arms merchants in our own country stop feeding the countless wars that rage across the globe.

You want a fight, President Bush? Let's fight to make sure our so-called allies in the Middle East, the Saudis and the Egyptians, stop oppressing their own people, and suppressing dissent, and tolerating corruption and inequality, and mismanaging their economies so that their youth grow up without education, without prospects, without hope, the ready recruits of terrorist cells.

You want a fight, President Bush? Let's fight to wean ourselves off Middle East oil through an energy policy that doesn't simply serve the interests of Exxon and Mobil.

Those are the battles that we need to fight. Those are the battles that we willingly join. The battles against ignorance and intolerance. Corruption and greed. Poverty and despair.

The consequences of war are dire, the sacrifices immeasurable. We may have occasion in our lifetime to once again rise up in defense of our freedom, and pay the wages of war. But we ought not – we will not – travel down that hellish path blindly. Nor should we allow those who would march off and pay the ultimate sacrifice, who would prove the full measure of devotion with their blood, to make such an awful sacrifice in vain.

And that is the crux of the day, Intelligent people made this decision, not those of you above. If anyone had read what the Nobel is for, it is not always what has already been achieved. The Nobel is often awarded on what can be achieved.

It would be nice that Americans can for one day, drop their bitterness and stand together as Americans for such an achievement. It is a sad day for America, it really is. That disent, bitterness, ignorance rules over an American Presdent receving the Nobel Peace Prize. Many countries other than America would rejoice. When Obama was elected by the people so many thought attitudes had changed within America and had hoped for better, yet, almost one year later and it is not to be. Very sad.

The "award" such as it is, was "given" without merit to Obama, the person. Therefore, I suggest that he not use AF-1 at taxpayer expense to fly over and accept said "award".

Single handedly creating an environment that strengthens the United Nations, the notion of negotiations and talks should be used 1st before war, the thought that nations should pull together to defeat common enemies, the notion to eliminate mass nuclear arsenals... to me that is a great accomplishment.

That said, does he deserve the award? Maybe not

Was it too early? Probably

Was it a politically motivated award by the committee? We don't know their motives... could be honest and noble (and don't tell me you KNOW their motives)

Did Obama know anything about it? No

Did he rub it in anyone's face or try to use it politically? No

The real point, however, is that Obama does not deserve the blasting from his detractors in his own country.

The GOP was probably LAST on the list to get the prize... Maybe they're just jealous. In any event, I hope this causes some GOP self reflection. Such an embarrassment... and in front of the world stage. They have told the committee "You lie"!

Thanks for the reminder. October 2002 - that was 5 months before the "elective" invasion date of 20 March 2003.

At that point, Bush et al. still had 5 months to plan for a transitional government and an "endgame", which of course, they never did. Certainly "Curveball" must had some thoughts on that too.

Bush et al. still had over one presidential term to end the mess he had started and handed this off to the end convenient sucker.

If they had waited for human rights to be granted to women and children in Iran you probably would not ever have known the name Shirin Ebadi and women and children in Iran would have it worse than they do now. After initially supporting President Bush, I grew very suspect about the WMD in Iraq. After all, we had been flying Northern and Southern Watch since the conclusion of Desert Storm I. US Government intelligence was pretty solid on the weapons Iraq possessed, and routinely destroyed munitions and military capital equipment when Iraq provoked one of our aircraft. When President Bush fired generals because he didn't agree with their troop recommendations and time to complete the invasion/occupation of Iraq, I grew increasingly agitated with the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfield trioka. So I voted with my feet and retired from the Air Force. I also became more cynical about the party I'd voted for for the last 8 elections. The Republicans were not speaking for me as much as I'd felt they had represented me in the past. Trite phases from President Bush - "Don't you get it" did not explain the rationale behind the Bush administration foreign policy motives. I had devoured Bob Woodward's books about the Bush Presidency and I started searching for new leadership knowing President Bush could not run for a third term.

The 2008 election actually excited me with great candidates from both the Republican and Democrat side. I was initially looking forward to McCain as I respected his words and sense of urgency to do what is right (maverick in the Republican party). Hillary Clinton and Barrack Obama stirred visionary charges for a better America - yet while Hillary pushed a smart woman at the expense of her heartfelt passion, Barrack pushed vision, ideals, logical arguments, and passion. I felt torn about Romney - I knew it would be a tough road for Republicans in the South to vote for a Morman. But all of these candidates and more that I have not mentioned - had a passion for the Presidency and the United States that I had not felt in the last two elections.

I voted for President Obama. And after his first nearly 270 days in office, I'd vote for him again today.

Change takes time. I recognize that the changes President Obama and his administration are working on will not be achieved in the first year. I understand the time it takes to move legislation through Congress - and the political capital the President pays to keep his vision on health care reform. I applaud his decisiveness to set a date and timetable to withdraw from Iraq. I applaud his decisiveness to build a Afghanistan strategy designed to defeat Taliban and al Qaeda terrorist in AF/PAK. I am please he is leading a deliberated discussion on a troop strength and strategy for Afghanistan. I understand the time it takes for economies to recover from recessions and that jobs are not leading recovery indicators - jobs lag. I am pleased with the progress the economy has made recovering - yet while I know easing federal interest rates plays a big factor to generate economic action, I also know the fed does not control the business decisions and purchasing decisions made by individual consumer, small businesses, and giant corporations. I don't even try to pin the responsibility of the recession on the Bush, Clinton, Bush, Regan administrations. I understand economic cycles happen in the free market society we cherish. I admire the cooperation between both Bush and Obama during the transition and the immediate government actions they took to rescue failing institutions. I fully expect these loans will be repaid - in fact, many banks already have repaid the loans. During the loan period - the American public reaps the benefits of American businesses paying interest on these loans. I sincerely hope AIG emerges from its financial wreck just fast enough for the country to realize a significant profit from the massive loan the fed provided. GM and Chrysler have already used financial legal tools to restructure - declaring bankruptcy and emerging quickly with new vision. Millions of jobs were saved by the Bush Administration followed by the Obama Administration. We can say this recession exposed weaknesses in our capitalist system that require significant discussion about how much regulation to we need to instill confidence in banking and investing.

So while the Obama haters are belittling the President about the Nobel Peace Prize - we have to remember - he didn't apply for the award - someone else nominated him - and the Nobel committee selected President Obama. Given the turmoil that I've discussed above - President Obama has led a peaceful transition in power in a nation of polarized political agendas. The passion of the arguments between the left and right coupled by the degenerating economic conditions would have led to significant violence and bloodshed in many different societies - yet President Obama has not sheltered or insulated himself from discussion - he continues to led with a charge to Americans to have hope, patience, and believe in change through peaceful deliberated discussion on the relevant issues affecting our nation. He has generated a firestorm of discussion that has remained peaceful discussion. In that respect - maybe the Nobel Committee was correct to award President Obama the Peace Prize. Not for his actions in the 12 days in office - but for the successful rise during the peaceful election of 2008, and the promise of peace, hope, and change that he brings to the office of the Presidency. As I reviewed the past Nobel Peace Prize winners, I couldn't but help notice that the winners didn't set out to win the peace prize - but were more recognized for their vision and ideals (King, Tutu, Mother Theresa, Gorbachev); some were awarded the prize based on previous action (i.e. Noel-Baker, Arafat); and some accomplishments (i.e. Marshall).

So congratulations to President Obama and the United States of America. Long live our peaceful polarized deliberated discussions guarding individual freedoms, liberty, the free market. Our challenges are great navigating a peaceful course through civil society and individual liberty.

Look at where we are now, on the verge of another civil war, hatred being spewed like Niagara Falls; leaders (term used lightly) lying, cheating, calling each other names, disrupting every chance they can get, nobody being held accountable for their actions, and many other vile acts. Forget other countries look at what is happening in the US the most disgusting, worrying, treacherous, and vileness I have ever seen. Makes me sick.

As a firefighter I had to go through a state background check, my wife as a teacher had to go through a state background check, my daughter had to go through a state background check to pass her CAN class; why then should not politicians have to go through an FBI back ground check in order to run for office or hold any government job responsible for making policy change decisions? Is it because we could not find anybody suitable or because many in those positions now are not suitable?

Ask yourself why does my daughter, who has little contact or influence over more than 20-30 people in school, my wife who has direct influence over maybe 50 kids in school, and myself who has influence over patients I come into contact with have to go through a background check; while those who make decision over thousands, millions, and sometimes billions of lives and trillions of dollars have to do nothing?

Corporations have much scrutiny and are held accountable for their actions when caught; why then are politicians not held accountable to anything. Lying is now called political or flip flopping. Why? Why are they held to such little standards?

We have become a pathetic nation of people, and everyone is worried about the Nobel peace prize, that has become a hoax ever since they changed the format and made it political. Like everything else that is political- one side believes the other is crooks and cheaters, both can’t be right and both can’t be wrong. I agree with Porkbevr. Only time will tell if any of his policies are of any value. Right now(9 months in), he still has not kept any of the promises that were made to the American people. Our peopleare still dying in Iraq and Afganistan. The news media is keeping quiet on the issue. This August was the largest death toll for America since the war began in Afganistan. The General in charge has asked for more resources and has said publicly that without said resources, we will lose on this front and the sacrifices made by so many of our people will be in vain. 'Lose' means that more of the men and women on our side will be dying. Obama is changing his strategy to pick a fight on the Pakistan border. Will he be starting a war with Pakistan now?

Our economy is in the tank. His administration is constantly telling us that things really are getting better even though unemployment continues to rise. Wow Ewent learn how your country works. Pelosi has been signing the pay checks for the war for the last 3 yrs while Bush whored himself out to her spending to get his war budget. The federal budget deficit tripled to a record $1.4 trillionfor the 2009 fiscal year that ended Sept 30th (3 mos Bush, 9 mos Obama, Democrat Controlled Congress). The previous record deficit was $459 billionand was set just last year (12 mos Bush, Democrat Controlled Congress). The President's budget which has been analyzed by the CBO and his budget is online (read it), would include $4,756 billion in new spending (more than the previous years record deficit) and $862 billion in new revenues, for a net $3,894 billion in new deficit spending during 2010-2019. This isn't counting the pet projects congress will more than likely add on as they pass Obama's budget through. This also does not include the Health Care Bill.

Since 9/11 the following, according to Congress has been funded or allocated to the two wars through 2009 budget.

Now, Bush was responsible for not using his veto powers on bills coming out of congress with way to much spending during his 8 years. He was also responsible for the 1st stimulus package. President Obama deserves to be congratulated for this award because this award reflects the United States as a friend to the world in its quest for peace, not an enemy as it was known in the past. As for him having met with so many leaders, I would rather he take care of the business at home!! Our economy is tanking, and he is running around the world. I started working when I was 14 in the hayfields and when I was 15 I got my first real job, working on a trash truck. At 16 I was working after school at Walmart and trying to get into the army while there was still a draft going on. My parents finally signed when I was 17 and I enlisted. Been working every since, although two plant closings slowed me up for a bit. I was two weeks getting a job after the second. I went to college on the GI bill after the first. Been working the same job now for 21 years. Would have liked to have gotten one of those silver spoons that you are so proud of, but just didn't have time. Both of my parents worked and I figured that that was just the way life is, you work for what you get and let the government take what they want of that.

I do believe the so called "free market" and ability of large corporations to act as they wish is the reason for the economic downturn. mortages issued and approved to people who can barely afford shoes, by sellers whos only motivation is to sell them; banks who are not required to keep a responsible balance sheet; and individuals sucked into the false belief that they can afford and are entilted to anything a credit card company says thay can have. Eventaully the bill will come, unfortunately in this case our children will pay it.
