I went to a Teaparty meeting. A small group start up last year. I was handed the constitution and told we want to return our government to what this document says it should be.

Skor, the problem isn't so much with what you think, it's that you don't think hard enough. The reason such a large part of the intellectual base you think of are "progressive" is that they are largely made up of college professors and other academics. They spend a lot of time thinking about how to make things better without ugly reality getting in the way. The reverse are the Tea Party who spend too much time gripped with reality (or in some cases the realities that used to be) to try and see it another way. The reality is that there isn't a an IQ line that says everyone over this IQ follows one ideology and all those below follow another. It comes down to how strongly they believe in their ideology to the point that they refuse to accept evidence that their idea is wrong. What does being a Christian have to do with the Presidency? Is "Christian President" listed as a requirement in the constitution? Does anyone on this site have the ability to see both sides of a story. There are some very radical people in the Tea Party movement but most are as sane, well educated, and have a great love for this Country just as we all should have. I'm sure most that belong to the Tea Party have better things to do with their time than travel the Country making a stand, they have very strong feelings about the direction this Country is taking, and I think they feel it is up to them to wake the people of the USA up before things get any more out of hand & we can never regain our Countries values back.

I have not attended any of the gatherings the Tea Party has held, I have watched all Channel's that carry news of the meetings. The gathering they had on the White House Lawn was very quite & the Washington Police said they had no arrests & the areas where it was held was left in very good condition, no papers left on the ground to be cleaned up by other people.

In contrast during one meeting held by the Tea Party a black gentleman was kicked & beaten by some Union Members because he was selling banners & other memorability, he was attracted & call the N word & told he should be ashamed of himself for being black & at one of these meetings. Those union members sound like such fine upstanding, educated Idiots don't they?

I have been a life long Democrat & have watch Cspan for many years. I have become very upset at times with both sides of the aisle when Congress would pass a stupid bill or fill the bill with Pork, but this year has been very different. I also went back to school at 48 and became a certified Harley mechanic. Now I'm in school again-this time learning medical records. I hope to work for the VA system-I want to make a difference. I have been registered as "no party" or independent since I was 20. I pay my taxes.

I was told when I was tounger I was a blue collar worker and was a democrat long before I was an informed adult. But after hearing that I realized that I did not share the same vlaue system as a democrat would. Nor do I share all that the republicans hold dear.

I was working in a factory and was a member of the union. But I joined the military and recived my BS degree and now am in a position where i make discions. And have chosen a profession with in the Army which will benift me upon me retiring or if I were to decide to leave. I feel know body ows me anything I worked my tail off to get where I am and to get what I have. I'm not a big spender and was raise with a value tht more folks should be raised with. "If you don't have the cash to get you don't need it".

I seriouly could have been held down by not wanting to leave my comfort zone and move on. But sometime you have to. America is a place of opportunity but it is up to the individual to go out and make it happen for themselves. Sitting around and waiting just won't work.

I'm all for less government and more indivual responsibility and a fiscally responsibale country. But people need to step up and take care of themselves. Starting a 401K or IRA is not hard. Working toward the future is not hard all youneed is a plan. One may have to buckel down right now and give up the LCD TV and the newest Cell phone. And I think that what a majority are looking at the here and now. Not how will things be when I retire. My Uncle is a member of the TEA party down in Florida. He FOUNDED 2 Successful businesses during his lifetime and has since retired after selling them both. My other Uncle is a Chemical Engineer with a phD who had factories built on his ideas. He also disagrees with the Obama administration's policies.

Post script - I watched a number of clips last night of various tea parties around the US. The station also included those who were protesting the Tea Party. Oddly enough, the only rude, loud people spouting emotional epitaphs were those opposing the Tea Party. Much like those with opposing views here on the 'Vine. I believe the Tea Party is going to continue to grow after all the good press yesterday. You can only lie about someone so long before those around you figure it out and start ignoring YOU!

If one really looked at the data, we'd see that the college education is undergraduate education with majors in business/accounting/finance, engineering or what have you. These degrees allow higher earnings, but don't necessarily mean these folks learned empirical method and related skills of research method and critical thinking. So education in itself doesn't mean people have good reasoning or logic.

Second, how is wealthier defined? I think it was above 50K. The majority are probably under six figures, which means they are not in the top 5% of wealth, and certainly not in the top 1% of wealth. They just have enough to feel threatened, and mostly they are feeling fear about the "browning" of our demographics. And the rest are Rednecks.

In regard to Haves and Have Nots, redistribution of wealth has been going on forever, and we hear no complaints as long as it has been religious based. For example, people receive $1,000 tax credit per child, while single people with no children pay more in taxes for things like public schools to educate the children of people who are paying less in taxes. Hmm, that hardly sounds fair.

Then stay-home mothers who don't work and therefore don't pay into programs like Social Security are able to collect SS checks when they retire. Hmm, that hardly sounds fair. And it's one reason why the program has been going broke. But since this is in keeping with "family values" it's supposedly acceptable.

Single income Americans who think they should benefit from their with-holdings, like health care or retirement, well they're screwed. In fact, they're double screwed because parents are feeding their kids chicken nuggets, fries, hot dogs, pizza and soft drinks. The health care system will collapse in the next 20 years thanks to these lazy, stupid parents and their lazy, indulged kids.

I'd like to see these Tea Party people show some outrage about this kind of redistribution of wealth. And that idiot Cantor who is saying tax hikes are going to hurt the next generation? Puleeze! Rolling back Bush's tax cuts for the top 5% to 1% needed to happen yesterday. And the next generation, the obese generation, need to take responsibility for their own behavior

What that the democrats should be careful about is that according to Rasmussen 52% of likely voters polled stated that the tea partiers have a better understanding of the issues than members of congress and 48% believe that those individuals are more closely aligned to their political beliefs versus the 44% who believe that the President is closer to theirs. This movement I can only see as healthy for our political system to counter balance the bought and sold Republican Party. The Tea Party if it does not lose it’s momentum can be a force for the good; meaning getting rid of the lobbyists, unnecessary pork, special interest (finance, energy, business of health and the environment) influence on capital hill, beating back the influence of the evangelicals and overall being a force for good.

I do not agree with everything they supposedly stand for but they are in a period of transition and may yet be a thoughtful and positive force in our nation. The battle for the mantle of leader is being waged as I write this post. The consensus that Palin is NOT qualified greatly serves to give some credibility to their movement. I can only hope that the high collective intelligence (as per the article) of the Tea Party recognizes we are a country and one people, a pluralistic society with various needs and demands of our government.

I hope the message I was trying to convey that a battle for the leadership of the Tea Party is on-going is not lost on the reader of my post. The Birthers, vehement anti-Obama and pro special interest and the call for reduction in taxes for the rich and not the middle class is not the party I want to see. We need a basically higher “free” education system, which means more taxes for the rich a reduction in bonus tied to speculation without risk and so on.

The belief that taking away health care and WIC and other programs for poor mothers will reduce the birth rate is false. The poorest countries in the world have the highest birth rates. Birth rates go down when quality of life goes up. That's why the birth rate of the middle class and wealthy low and the birth rate of the poor is high. Even if the middle class pays less taxes their birth rate won't rise. The logic of these people is flawed. The survival of the fittest thing is not going to bring about a highly intelligent, law-abiding, (and all white) society. If poor babies die, the mom's have more babies to replace them. Wealthier people expect their babies will live, so they have fewer.

How amazing that some individuals know both the intelligence and private thoughts of Tea Party members.

What I took from this article/poll is that the Tea Party movement wants what is good for them. They want lower taxes but wait.....don't touch those programs that they can still cash in on when they need them when they get into their 60's!!

If this survey is accurate, they have no problem cutting domestic programs as long as it does not affect them directly (they feel they have paid into it and it is owed to them). Sounds pretty selfish but maybe it is just me. And oh, no, I am not playing a race card but stating the obvious based on the poll. The majority of the group is WHITE! Why do people bash other people that want social security? If someone has paid into the system for 50+ years they should expect to get it back. It's NOT A HANDOUT. It is or should I say, should be, a return on an investment. My mother is 80 years old and started collecting social security when she was 67. I sat down and did the math. IF she had taken the money that was collected from her paycheck and the employer's portion and put it in simple interest bearing savings account with an average of 5% interest from the time she started working until the time she was 67, there would have been almost $700,000.00 in that account. That is not including any additional savings she may have had.

So, you see, the problem is NOT social security, it is the way the government handles OUR MONEY. If Johnson had not seen fit to open the social security coffers for anything the politicians wanted then there would be tons of money in the account.

And we, me included, laughed at Bush when he wanted to privatize social security. If I could go back in time and have the opportunity to keep it myself and invest - I would. At least I know MY MONEY would be there for me.

It is tiresome to hear the predictable slurs used by both sides when assessing the capacities of and the worthiness of their political adversaries. Could there be a difference of opinion between the supporters of the status quo and people who are concerned about the direction of the country? Could a reasonable person look at the actions of congress over the last 50 years and come to the conclusion they are incompetent, power hungry and corrupt? Over 47 percent of this country in 2009 did not pay any federal taxes at all. Most of this group got every dime of their taxes paid back to them PLUS more. The wealthy shoulder almost 90 percent of the tax burden in this country.

Just because someone makes 8.00 an hour vs 100.00 an hour does not mean the 8 works harder then the 100.00 and diserves his money more. Our tax system is flat out broken and needs to be fixed. Hell its in worse shape then the health care was.

The one comment so far that has truth in it. The polarization of America to this extent is the problem. No one IS listening to anyone else, everyone just says, "oh, you're one of those." And no one is even trying to think things through. The other problem with this is that everyone is pointing out what they think of as problems, but no one is coming up with solutions. I'll start, just a few ideas here: We need jobs, entry level jobs for all the young folks coming out of HS and College, as well as all the people laid off in the past few years because of the Recession. So first we bring American jobs back to the US; and tax the crap out of companies who keep those jobs overseas. We also identify things the we need to improve life right here in the US, how about housing that sustains forest growth? We could come up with a good, in expensive way to turn all that land fill garbage into building materials. Also, I don't know about where you live but in my neighborhood we could use some street repair, alley way repair and tree planting, how about we put some money toward making our neighborhoods nice, well lit and pleasant? You say the governments don't have enough money to do these things, how about we bring ALL our troops home, then we tell the rest of the world the following: "you need books, medicine, bandages, road built, telecommunication systems, electrocal plants? We're here for you, you need houses built, we'll help you out. You want guns, planes, warships, tanks? No can do anymore. You want to kill, maim and commit atrocities on each other, we'll help pick up the pieces when you come to your senses but we're not going to get in between you any more. But if you or yours mess with us, attack us, we'll blow you back to the pre-stone age and let you rot. We're done being the police of the world, it only harms us, and obviously it's not helping you. And it sure isn't helping us."

Okay, maybe my suggestions won't work. I know they are mostly based on my limited experience, I'm a writer/computer geek/ex healthcare worker, not a general or corporate CEO or lawyer. But hey at least I'm trying to find solutions; what about the rest of you?

Honestly, I noticed that as well. The other quoted comments in the article did not have that feel, so yes, the author may have added that one quoted comment to leave readers with that impression.

I know it seems my post hinged on that one quote (since I highlighted it), but that really is not my point. In some of my earlier posts, I openly asked the question to any Tea Partier out there why there was no diversity in the group and why every policy that has come out of Washington in the last year they are firmly against with no real explanation.

The typical answers that are given are lower taxes, smaller government, SAME SERVICES?? WTF?? Not to mention "we are loosing our freedom" and "preserve our liberty" with no rhyme or reason where that comes from or what the heck that is suppose to mean! Lots of loud yelling, obnoxious signs and caricatures. It just seems that is all the Tea Party is about; mob mentality and loud mouthing!

This article and poll sheds light (even without that one quote) as to why they are doing this. I had always figured simple selfish greed and self righteousness, but these poll numbers and these quotes (all of them) really confirm why this is happening; in my mind at least.

So no, the final quote though telling, was simply a small symptom to a much bigger problem. Plain old selfishness and the "It's all about me!" and "Preserve the wealth of the white majority" mentality of the Tea Party. (Again, no offense to my white bretheren)

From a $$ standpont, the wealthy do incur the largest portion of the tax burden. From a PERCENTAGE standpoint, the middle class incurs the largest.

The middle class pays a disproportionately large amount due ot the fact that they don't have the same right-offs and loopholes available to them that the wealthy do. Many of that 47% that don't owe federal income tax are making way more money than you or me.

We (everyone who gets a paycheck) specifically pay into SS and MC. Since they won't give it back to us other than via a check at a certain age, I guess we'll have to take it. The big gov't is the take over of private corporations and the banking system and health care and all the czars that only have to answer to the prez. There is no hypocrisy. The gov't is overstepping its boundaries in a more radical and socialistic way than ever. The TEA party groups and rallies are not exclusive clubs. Anyone can participate. It is a cross section of Americans. In my area the rally demographics appeared to resemble the local community overall. A healthy mix that understand we are all Americans not just ethnic groups.

Many are bigots but other than that there is no surprise in this poll. It appears the Teabags are old white guys who make at least enough to pay taxes and fear that poor people will get the same break as they do by them having to give up some of their exclusive deductions. Go on the net and find video on the tea parties. There are lots of them. Some are all white, but most are not. To the naked eye a difference in shades and colors do no occur until the color difference exceeds 50% of the surrounding. A lot of African Americans also get lighter as they age. Look closer to NON-ABC, CNN, CBS, and NBC footage and you will see that all races ARE involved in these protests. The reason you believe these people are only old and white racists is because of the writers you exclusively stake your life trust in WANT all of America to believe that.

Guess what, I'm a college educated individual, I place a high value on intellect, and dislike ignorance. I support gay rights, support same sex marriage because the Constitution calls for Equal Protection under the Law for all citizens. I am pro-choice. I work for a department that services the poor and underserved in my community. I volunteer to teach inner city kids who's school can't afford science teachers, science through a program we run here at work. I have a very broad and diverse array of friends. I'm a very staunch supporter of civil rights and civil liberties.

I voted for Obama. I really dislike Sarah Palin and most of what she represents. I dislike that the Tea Party uses her as a headliner.

I also voted for Kerry, Gore, and Clinton (and was too young to vote for Clinton the first time around). I vote Democrat more often than Republican, though I have voted for some Republicans, because while I really don't like collectivism, I loathe social conservatism.

I really disliked George W. Bush. I railed against the War in Iraq from the beginning, not just for being entered into on false premises, but also for spending far too much money. I have been complaining about the Republican corruption and overreach during the Bush Years, and the fiscal irresponsibility they practiced while claiming to be actual fiscal conservatives.

But...

I support the Tea Party movement so long as it focuses on economic sanity, and fiscal conservatism. If it ever morphs beyond that into a wholly conservative movement, I will withdraw my support. I'm a libertarian, or a classical liberal.

I support capitalism, enterprise, free markets, and free trade. I believe those systems properly align people's incentives to pull society forward to increase the standards of living we can all enjoy if you are willing to work smart.

I support a minimal level of public welfare, because I think it does have stabilizing affect on society from which we all benefit, in much the same way as public goods like the infrastructure we support. But only the minimal amount necessary, we should not be redistributing wealth to try and cause "comfort".

Do I think there are probably *some* racist bigots who also support the Tea Party? Yes. With a large enough group of people you are bound to find some bad seeds. Even the left has them. You have people like Communist sympathizer Joe Stack who crashed his plane into a Federal building because he was pissed off he wasn't getting a bigger piece of the big government pie. You have Union thugs who beat up a black man and hurl racial epithets at him for daring to sell Gadsen "Don't Tread On Me" flags outside a public Town Hall forum on Health Care Reform. You have racist leftists who can't stand an African American conservative who call the black leaders of the Tea Party movement "Uncle Toms" because they stick up for principles they despise.

So, let's get it straight. Both sides have their fringe, both sides have their loonies, and both sides have their haters, extremists, and potentially violent malcontents.

But the Tea Party is by and large a peaceful group of concerned citizens looking to get a handle on out of control government growth, nothing more, nothing less. They might be angry, they may be less than civil at times when dealing with people and particularly politicians who hold diametrically opposed views from them. Mother and Father-n-law made the same money, paid $500 more in taxes. He works and might make$40,000, she is retired getting a pension and SS now.

My wife and I earned $69,000 $8,000 less than last year, increase our withholding $600. We got almost $400 back this year despite $5500 being for 3 months of unemployment with the first $2500 in unemployment being exempted from tax and receiving a $800 credit to make work pay. With the loss of income, we should have exceeded the increased withholding we had not been less.

Married filing jointly, under $75,000 we were supposed to see a slight cut in taxes.

My wife works for a CPA. Many people paying more in taxes from all levels of income. Why you might ask. Well, the tax cut was a cut on the withholding, not on the taxes. Tax cuts were to a select few targeted souls that I and quite a few others aren't.

Nope. The article did NOT say that "Republicans are smarter." It said that teapeople tend to be "better educated." Because their familes have had money for at least a generation, and they went to college because they could afford it.... college, however, does NOT make a person smarter.

High education doesn't mean you are intelligent. High education displays a dogged determination to complete a course of study. Completing several unrelated courses of study well might indicate intelligence, but does not guarantee being able to apply what is learned in day-to-day life. Surprisingly, anyone with above average intelligence and willing to work hard enough can get a Masters degree.

Again I think the data is a little distorted, but reasonable. Here is my opinion. Tea Party members and protesters are generally Fox viewers. And it does. One glaring difference is the education and income (which is closely related). For normal blue collar worker to take a day off is less likely, but for a white collar or a stay at home mom, or retired persons that is much more likely.

Post script - I watched a number of clips last night of various tea parties around the US. The station also included those who were protesting the Tea Party. Anyone in the construction industry knows that no ground breaking can be done until the drawings from the engineering companies are received in the mail. No engineering means no construction. I challenge anyone to contact any engineering firm and apply for a job. They will tell you there is no plans to hire this year, but they will hold your resume and contact you if things turn around. That is not good news because it normally takes a year to a year and a half to come up with the drawings, and Obama has wasted a year and a half already.

I don't know how old you are, but if you were looking for work in 1981, you would have known that the engineering firms were hiring like crazy in Reagan's first year because companies were confident in the administration and placed orders for engineering services to start plant expansions. We don't see any such optimism in Obama's first year.

I can vouch for engineering firms not hiring. I'm graduating next month as an Electrical Engineer as are a number of my classmates. Most of them have not been able to find jobs. Even teh power companies aren't hiring. I guess I'm lucky as my employer has been putting me through school to get my degree. I wish you luck with the job hunt.

The tea party people are mostly from the generation 1929-1945. They have enjoyed the most prosperous era in the USA. They were born during a suppressed birth rate (Depression WWII) and were actually sought after by employers who had to dream up employer paid health insurance. They have long ago paid for houses, frozen property tax (their little screw you to the generations after them) , and nice fat pensions having worked when 50% of jobs were unionized. They created none of this yet feel they earned it and those not as fortunate are lazy and stupid.

Their sense of entitlement and lack of gratitude is shown by their desire not to support public education or anything beside wars.

They are self absorbed and self-important and are unable to identify hypocrisy or any of their other faults. Their sense of superiority is daunting so it is pointless to have debate or discussion with them. Way too much time and money on their hands as they try to suck the wealth remaining here into their last few years on earth. There are still numerous bad debts from the financial crisis that have not been resolved, and I will let you in on something, commercial real estate hasn't gone through their readjustment yet. A 1 to 2 year recession cannot fix 20 years of poor economic policies by our government, and the presidents efforts of spending money we don't have are only hindering our recovery.

Personally, I have paid for someones grocery while I was in line waiting to pay for mine and the person in front of me didn't have enough to pay and she was putting aside basic essentials out of the entire order that consisted of only essentials. I have paid for a room for a family who were homeless and then paid for theirbreakfast the next day so they would have at least one meal that day. I have countless times helped someone less fortunate, or just plain needed the help. What have you done but complain. By the sounds of tea baggers, these are the people who do not need help. Perhaps you should open your eyes. Pay attention in your own towns and see who these needy people are before you decide that certain programs are not necessary.

What you did was not the job of our government. Handouts do not actually help people better themselves. There are social workers out there that after working 35 years have seen one, only 1, person succeed and elevate themselves to become a productive member of society (while dragging her three kids to the cadaver lab at times even). Programs should only be structured to actually provide an incentive to improve...it's not about what is given but how it is given.

Actually, the older southerners are a bit racist. I have relatives that live down there and believe me I have listened to this crap for sometime. They cover it with religion, and side step it in government but they are racist. The same can be said about the blacks however, I have seen and heard them and they are just as racist as the whites.

I'm with Carianne. If 77 white people vote, and 10 African Americans vote. If 10 of those 77 are racist and only 9 African Americans voted for Obama, then more white people voted for McCain because Obama was black than voted for Obama because he was black. Simple numbers game. If you get past straight numbers and look at the percentage of white voters vs the percentage of African American voters, you get a totally different picture as 90 % of African Americans voted for Obama because he is black while only 13% of whites voted for McCain because Obama is black. Of course, not all 90% of African Americans voted for Obama based on his skin color. Still, there's a long way to go before the percentages even out.

Idaho - I get that liberals like to pull the racist card almost as much as Republicans like to pull the "then you must hate America" card, or the "go back to your own country" card. A $100,000 reward has been offered to anyone who can produce evidence that the "N" word was said. So, far no takers. Why do you suppose that is? Because no one actually used the "N" word. Otherwise, someone would be rolling in dough right about now.

If you walked pass me on the street and I called you an horses rear and you didn't get that on camera .... does that mean I never said it ?

Even if one person did yell the N word it was a crowd of thousands. that would not make everyone of them an idiot racist it would make one person an idiot racist. But the fact remains that despite numerous video cameras and recording devices no one has any record of that actually being said.

You make sweeping little cliches and sound so adamant, but what is it about the Tea Party that you do not agree with? How familiar are you with the matters the Tea Party members are protesting?

Are you aware that the Federal government is the largest employer in the country? The government doesn't generate any real revenue; it exists off tax dollars. Are you ok with the $700,000 retreat that the Social Security Administration sent it's employees on last June at a posh Arizona hotel? Are you ok with the Copenhagen conference on climate change where every Democratic member that attended took their own private planes (what hypocrisy) and Nancy Pelosi's room alone cost $2200.00 per day? Are you ok with these? Do you even know about these? Do you care? How indoctrinated, and uninformed are you?

Since you were not aware of the figures released earlier, are you not the least bit curious about what else it is that you do not know? I would bet there's a lot. You're probably a good-ole NBC watcher and get all your news there. I do watch it - for the entertainment factor. After all, when you depend on the network that gave you the ACORN scandal 5 days after it broke - after the BBC aired the scandal; and they were absolutely forced, then it's understandable (and laughable) that you would call others as taking it in "Hook, line, and sinker."

why dont you prove the n word wasnt used? I see lots of signs of racism aside from that one day and I jhave no doubt it was used.

You don't have to prove something didn't happen. You have to prove something DID happen.

You can also have no doubt all you want, but without proof, it's just an opinion and nothing more. And as far as it being "somewhat racist" to say a sitting Senator is going to lie...politicians lie all the time. Why is that so far-fetched?

Maybe somebody shouted the N word at him and maybe they didn't. The only people who really KNOW are the Senator and the person who supposedly said it. Anyone who says otherwise without proof is just engaging in idle speculation. Nothing more.

why is it racist to assume a senator is lying? We have seen the President lie. In fact we have seen both white and black Presidents lie. Clinton said something about not having sex with that women. And Obama said something about no lobbyists, and then something else about every bill would be debated in the public, and then something about how no Americans earning less than 250,000 would pay more taxes.

I know you don't see the taxes yet and they probably won't even be called taxes when they get here. they will be fees, higher utility bills, higher insurance bills, higher gas prices, higher cigarette prices, more expensive food. but there wont be any new taxes.

David everything I know and have heard about John Lewis leads me to believe he is a good man. I am not overly familiar with him but I have seen him speak and he is someone to be admired and respected. I think it is possible that he misheard something but there were cameras rolling and no one has been able to find any evidence of the word being used. it is also possible that someone said it directly to him out of camera range. That doesn't make the entire movement racist like it has been continuously portrayed as in the democrat talking points.
