What is the harm in doing this? The states know where the problem areas are but were powerless to do anything before this. Plus when they turned over illegal people to the federal government, nothing was really done!
Now the state can handle the problem and solve it by deporting those people. Other states will have a growing problem no doubt and will probably follow suit with Arizona to make it against state law also.
If the federal government won't do what they are supposed to do "protecting against this problem, the states will certainly do so.

Way to go AZ....my mother lives in Yuma and every night when you try to sleep you hear the border patrol helicopters circling overhead....So you might have to produce a birth certificate or a passport..big deal, when traveling to other Countries you do the same. Racial profiling my butt....more like oops there goes a big voting block. If you are here legally then you have nothing to worry about. If you are illegal you need to pay the price. Phusi, well just to "amuse" you, I came here as a LEGAL alien so I carry a Green Card with me at all times. You see, I bothered to go through all the requirements to obtain legal entry into this country. Sure I could have saved my employer a ton of $$$. Sure I could have saved myself an enornous amount of $$$. But there isn't a person alive anywhere on this planet that does not know there are immigration laws here. Comply with them or suffer the consequences.
But setting that aside for a minute, I was raised in Europe in a country where the carrying of an Identity Card was required. Unlike some people here, I never considered that to be an infringement of my "rights". It's a %$#ing piece of paper. Nothing more nothing less that tells anyone with the right to ask who I am.
And fwiw, I HAVE been whisked off to jail (in West Virginia no less) for speeding to await a hearing before a quickly convened midnight court session before my final card came through. I had my passport on me along with my work permit and visa. Never took it as an insult that the Trooper felt the need to do so. But I can tell you, that kind of treatment is far more preferable than what you would experience in many of the countries who are literally invading these shores these days. Try to be undocumented in much of the rest of the world and see how you like your "rights" over there.

I'm a 26 year old Floridian, and I say it's PAST time to rid ourselves of this problem. I don't care what anyone thinks or says about it. This is an issue of legality, and ethics. It's unethical for Americans like myself, whose families have bled for this country.. Can't even find a job, but you past a million Mexicans and yeah, you can spot the illegals from a mile away.. can't even get an f-ing job! If you can pay one of them three to five bucks less per hour with no benefits on top of that... it's worth it NOT to hire Americans! Either way, it's the tax payer that's been forking the bill, and will CONTINUE to fork the bill... each one of them has 8 kids apiece, going to our schools, using our public programs, taking our jobs, anyone has a complaint about this crap, just come to central Florida. How many folks carry proof of citizenship as a matter of course? Don't know how things roll in AZ, but I cross the border from Detroit to Windsor all the time - US Customs & Immigration is pretty adamant that a driver's license or state-issued ID is NOT proof of US citizenship. So, folks in AZ (let's face it, Mexican-descent folks in AZ) must now carry their birth certificates, or pony up $80 or so for a US Passport?
I wonder if the law provides for tracking just how many people get the "Papers, please" request by ethnicity? Let's track that for a year and see how many white, black and Asian folks "get carded" under this law.
I agree that illegal immigration is a problem. I do not support ANYONE being in the US illegally, Mexican, Asian, white, black, red or green. But this law is a huge mistake; AZ is setting itself up as the Fourth Reich. My mom used to tell me about how unpleasant it was having the Nazis ask her for her papers in occupied Antwerp during WWII - never though I'd see it in the US, nor so many so-called Americans rejoicing over the fact.
Personally, I think this argument is horse@!$%#. Arizona is not "regulating" immigration. They are merely ferreting out those who are breaking the law. Period. I hope this does go to the Supreme Court and gets upheld. You know, if the federal government would just GET OFF ITS ASS and protect US citizens, states like Arizona, Oklahoma, etc, would not have to resort to desperate measures like this.

Dear Senator Boxer, Senator Feinstein, and Representative Davis, Any proposal that allows illegal aliens to remain in the U.S. is an amnesty. Please oppose any form of amnesty. The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA) was enacted by Congress in response to the large and rapidly growing illegal alien population in the United States. The final bill was the result of a dramatic compromise between those who wanted to reduce illegal immigration into the United States and those who wanted to "wipe the slate clean" for those illegals already living here by granting them legal residence. As enacted, IRCA included a massive amnesty program for two main categories of illegal aliens:
1) those who could show that they had resided illegally in the United States continuously since at least January 1, 1982; and
2) those who had worked as agricultural workers for at least 90 days between May 1, 1985 and May 1, 1986.
As a "balance" to this huge amnesty, IRCA also included several provisions designed to: strengthen the enforcement of immigration laws (including sanctions for employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens); increase border controls; and create a program to verify the immigration status of aliens applying for certain welfare benefits. Unfortunately, the federal the government has failed to adequately provide the enforcement that was promised in 1986.
The IRCA amnesty has been tied to terrorism. Mahmud Abouhalima, a leader of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, was legalized as a seasonal agricultural worker as part of the 1986 IRCA amnesty. This allowed him to travel abroad, including several trips to Afghanistan, where he received terrorist training. Congress has passed several amnesties since 1986 and illegal immigration increased after each one. Today, there are an estimated 12-20 million illegal aliens living and working in the United States. The amnesty solution has failed. We tried this amnesty once in 1986 and Ronald Reagan and Congress told us this would be a one time only process and here we are again 25 years later doing it again. zorrosmom, I am not sure which part of the US Constitution prohibits states from passing and enforcing such a law. Certainly the Constitution prohibits limiting interstate commerce and travel, but that does not apply in this case. This law make take advantage of the clause which leaves undefined powers "to the States".
If the Feds do attempt to interfere with the enforcement of the law, it will become a much needed States rights issue. It will also shine a harsh and unforgiving light on the inaction of the Feds to control our southern border. I don't think the Feds have the stomach for that fight.
This doesn't legalize profiling, it finally gives Arizona the legal clout to deal with 460,000 illegal immigrants. That's a heavy load to carry on Arizona's already stressed infrastructure.
Mexico doesn't want any illegals in their country. You can't even become a citizen without having money to pay your way in. What's "misguided" about this?

The state of Arizona has every legal right to do this.
In 1997 AZ sued the Federal Government for the cost of keeping illegals in prison. The Federal and Supreme Court stated that since Arizona was not being invaded by a foreign entity it was the State's problem. They further pointed out by the Constitution, the Federal Government only controls Naturalization Laws. The final verdict was that it is Arizona's problem.
However, that was a nice try Zorro.
Just like California when they tried to have stricter emissions regulations placed upon car makers, and with medical marijuana, the Feds can come in and say "fck you" any time they want.

I wonder if it ever occurred to anyone that IF our Federal Government were doing their job, this law would not be necessary? As long as INS and Border Patrol have their hands tied by the Obama Administration, laws like this, that Obama can not control, will be made necessary by his actions to protect the illegal immigrant criminals in this country so he can give them amnesty, make them citizens and let them tap into public assistance programs that they have yet to pay into and all so the Democrats can garner the illegal immigrant vote.
Before anyone brings it up, yes I know the old argument that only those with a legal right to do so can vote. A fat lot of good that does when we have states like California giving out state issued ID cards and driver license tests in Spanish so the illegals can get public assistance and legally drive in their state. Either one of these allows them to register to vote without proving citizenship and even if the have to show ID at the voting polls, they have one or for a small fee can purchase a fraudulent ID and no one looks at it twice except law enforcement.
So, as long as Obama continues to ignore the illegal immigrant problem, his actions force the various states (especially the border states) to protect themselves.

The people and administrators there know their situation better than any of us "quarterbacks" outside of Arizona. So, personally, I will defer to their judgement that the language of the law will not result in the profiling so many are worried about and will, instead, result in a fair enforcement of our immigration laws.

The government derives it's power by the consent of it's citizens. The states maintain a national guard that are actually the front line of defense against Mexico, Canada, Cuba, and Russia.
It is actually illegal for the US Army to be used inside the US Border against it's own citizens. The National Guard can by order of the individual Governors. The Union army in the civil war was made up of units of state armed forces. Why the Civil War was legal was because the southern states withdrew from the union and attacked Union Forces.
Arizona has considered this carefully. This is a huge blow to the two reigning political parties who want to exploit illegal aliens by giving them rights to vote and use our money and facilites at our expense.
This also affirms what we have held to all people that wish to come here. Follow the rules and you are welcome instead of come any way you please and do what ever you wish legal or illegal.
I think it is about time. Federal government can take a seat and watch the states take control. Enforcing a law that is already on the books shouldn't need to have a state law to make it happen. But because there has been such a laxed approach to our borders and now that states income is drastically decreased, I'll be surprised if other states don't make a break for this kind of law to cut their losses on federal programs that are out of control spending. Kudos to Arizona. If you are here legally you need not fear, there will be a massive movement in the next couple of months. At least AZ gave them 90 days to pack up and leave before they law is inacted.

Interesting comment. About 2 months ago the local Sheriff arrested some 80+ undocumented workers at a new hospital's construction site (Federal dollars of course). The next day, there were 80+ new workers there. Previously unemployed American construction workers I might add. I do wish however that the Sheriff had ran the contractor hiring the undocumented workers out of town too.
Here's what you do with racial profiling. Check a latino, check a white guy. Simple as that. Throw in a black or Asain every once in awhile. Problem fixed.

It was a bad idea when Reagan did it, and that was only 3 million. This is 12-20 million people and the logistics of getting them out are daunting so oddly I do support A PATH to citizenship. I don't remember the congressmembers name but the overview sounded rational: fines, back taxes, seven years, civics classes, etc - and a test. JUST like it's already supposed to be.
The problem with the bill as it currently stands is there is too little enforcement of our borders - STILL. We cannot offer amnesty and keep the borders open - its unsustainable.
I guess it's nice that Arizona can pass racist legislation. When they succeed in running out all the Mexicans, who is going to harvest the produce for stores? A bunch of lazy white people won't go out into the fields and harvest the crops as cheaply. So food costs will go up because their is less fresh produce in the supermarkets, restaurant costs will go up and so will hotel charges. here's to the republican and tea baggers party which are one in the same, you complain about having to pay higher taxes. I applaud the Governor, now if California would just wake up. The US needs to know who is here. I think the next step is to stop hiring, educating, and providing medical and welfare services to illegal (criminal) immigrants. We need a consitutional amendment fixing the anchor baby problem as well (no more automatic citzenship for just being born here). Our neighbor to the North, Canada fixed that problem years ago!

This bill is a good thing. Why are some so agitated at a law that makes it illegal to be here illegally. Federal law already does this. What the liberals don't like is the manner of its enforcement and the possibility of profiling. That can be handled rather easily and sill pass constitutional muster. Their complaints are a red herring. The real reason liberals are against this bill, and the possibility that the other states would mirror this, is that they want more democrats. Children born of illegal immigrants in this country are US citizens. They are likely to be democrats. Get rid of illegal immigrants and you get rid of a huge pool of future democrats. My other concern is that many Hispanic leaders are against deporting illegal aliens because they are Hispanic. My thoughts are where do your loyalties lay, with your culture or your country. You can't have your cake and eat it too. If it is illegal to be in the US then you need to be prosecuted for violating the law. Anyone opposed to this is in favor of illegal immigration.

That won't happen, the illegals will all leave and there won't be any need to ask anyone. Problem solved. Should have enforced the laws from the get go and there wouldn't be this mess that the past several presidents and federal governments have ignored. The states have the rights to ask for proof of citizenship, in some states you have to have a passport to renew your license and it doesn't matter what color your skin is. I'm going to get my passport as it should be the next step in every state.
Families won't be separated, if you are here illegally and your children are citizens will you leave your children behind? I think not, you would take them with you and maybe do it right and become a legal citizen.

First of all the action in AZ is really not going to do much at all. It is all just eyewash to make people think something is happening. It will cost a lot in lawsuits for the state. Second, it really is just going to make the cops job so much more difficult because they will be pressured to spend a lot of time doing what the feds should be doing and even worse, no one is going to cooperate with them for fear of being questioned by them about their status. I am NOT for just turning our backs and ignoring the huge problem that illegals are, but at the same time what is needed is a unified and really enforceable plan, not a state by state plan. The new law does not say anything about detaining or questioning Latinos only, that would be illegal and I agree with it.
It does say that while in due duty of an officer performing their job, they are recquired to request identification and if any questions arise to the validation of the legal staus of the suspect, they are recquired to detain them.
It says absolutely nothing about pertaining to Latinos only.
Only the latinos are saying it directly affects them. Arizona also has Liberians, Cubans and many other ethnic groups that are illegal. In 1996 my buddy from Canada was deported.

It's not like this hasn't been tried before. Similar laws existed after the civil war whereby any African American within the south without identification was considered a fugitive and thus breaking the law. This is no different. Any Latino that doesn't have ID is automatically a suspect and will be detained. If you think that's going to happen to an old white couple walking the streets without ID you're just not dealing with reality, or just intensionally avoiding the obvious.
I'm not saying that something shouldn't be done. This is just not the way to do it...at all.

No, you are wrong. After the Civil War the United States Government instituted the 14th Amendment. This was Naturalization of any citizen born within the United States.

Capas says the truck appeared to have been loaded in the last seven hours and that it was "cramped."

We read articles like this all the time. Now keep in mind that if this truck breaks down or runs out of gas, the driver just leaves it. We've had many cases of trucks/vans being found out in the dessert, crammed full of illegals, and they are dead. Stuffed into a locked truck or van, these people don't stand a chance with the temps AZ gets up to.

If you look deeply you will see Mexicans are extremely "Nationalist" they become Latinos when convienient, but they dislike every other Latino country out there.
Gov. brewer even spoke at Chicanos por la Causa last night, a group that claims representing Latino Rights, but has all ways made sure Mexican Rights come first at the expense of their southern neighbors.

it's an ugly scenario. let's say there are 20 million illegals in the US. i've heard estimates that claim more, and estimates that claim less.
anyway, 20 million illegals are given amnesty. those 20 million can now bring close family members legally into the US to become citizens. hispanic families are typically very large. let's say that each illegal brings 4 family members with them.

The only thing I don't like about this law, is that cops can ask for ID of ANYONE and the person must show said ID. This has always been illegal. Cops are only allowed to ask for ID if a law was broken. It's to protect everyone's rights. If you want to get to the heart of illegal immigration, you do it through the work place by going after employers who hire illegals and by taking other incentives away.
I also agree that AZ will have to figure out what to do with all the "anchor" babies. These children are legal natural born citizens according to the Constitution. Article 14 merely says, "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States, and the State wherein they reside."
I don't think that Amendment was well written. Perhaps the "subject to the jurisdiction thereof" may be seen as way to get around the "anchor" baby problem through the fact that the parents being a citizen of another country are not subject to the jurisdiction of the US; therefore this might show that the children are not in fact natural born citizens. Just a thought. I'm not a lawyer, but "anchor" babies do present a problem because of the 14th Amendment.
That said, Illegal immigration is a big problem in America. I find it ridiculous that of all the countries on this planet, the US cannot force it's immigration laws with out being called names or threatened.
I was born in L.A., but married a Canadian 5 years ago. I am now a legal resident of Canada. I went through the process, I respected Canada's immigration laws. Before my residency came through, I wasn't covered under their Provincial Health Care. I had to pay out my own pocket, w/ family help, when I had an ectopic pregnancy.
I didn't go protest at Parliament Hill saying my rights were being violated because I couldn't get everything a Canadian citizen or resident could get. I had that understanding when I came here. It's not easy being an illegal here, but the police don't go around pulling people over asking for their papers. I don't carry my resident card with me, cause the police here can't ask for it. Yet illegal immigration is not as big a problem up here.
You don't need a stazi to enforce immigration laws. You take away the incentives. Illegals don't get free health care or free rides through college up here, and the penalties for hiring illegals are more often enforced. I do know Vancouver has a problem with Chinese citizens bringing illegals over and sticking them in sweatshops. The cops there are always busting these sweatshops in Chinatown. So illegal immigration isn't non existent, but it's handled more efficiently. Canadians are very Nationalistic, and don't mess around.

Honestly I am just tired of everyone else having more rights then the Americans in their own country. Children are tought in Spanish more then English in America. I am tired of people saying if the Americans werent so lazy we wouldn't have a need for the illegals to do the work. He started to refuse them using the SS# and required the employers TIN and they started going elsewhere. So I will REFUSE to purchase their product....they are doing their own country wrong and wish I knew how to alert someone on what they are doing. There's a 3 year gap between the ending of the Civil War and the 14th Amendment. Not only that but you might want to check out a few civil rights court cases which dealt with the 14th Amendment like:

Brown vs. the Board of Education
and many many many more. They all dealt with the 14th Amendment decades and even a century after the Civil War. Enforcement of the 14th Amendment didn't just magically spread across the country after the Civil War it took a very very long time and many years and lives to enforce. The fact that you believe that the Civil War erased racism and magically transformed the country is a little troubling, especially seeing some of your "bravado" in action.

Don't bother telling me it can't be done because I have been a Law Enforcement Officer for 26.5 years before retiring in 2003. in 1977 when I first started my career the local police department I worked for were often called on to assist the Border Patrol in raiding houses where known illegals lived, arresting them and detaining them until the Border Patrol could arrange to transport them back to their homeland which in most cases was Mexico. The existing immigration laws worked then because the then POTUS Jimmy Carter, for as usless a POTUS as he was, did not stand in the way of the INS/Border Patrol as Obama is doing now.
You are also correct that existing laws do need some help to solve the illegal immigrant problem. As I mentioned in my earlier post, the existing law that grants a child born in the U.S. to non U.S. parents citizenship,should be changed to not allow these kids to become a U.S. citizen until their 18 birthday and then it should be their choice providing they have no serious and or continuous criminal history, especially, but not limited to, one involving gang violence, drug usage or sale or manufacturing of a illegal drug. This would stop the current problem of the illegal parents hiding behind their U.S. born kids to continue staying in this country illegally.

We are a Republic, we are not a Democracy. The Individual State's have priority over the Federal Government, unless dictated by the Constitiution.

I often go places without my ID. Like most people, I keep my driver's license, credit cards, work ID, SS card...ALL of my ID is in my wallet and I keep my wallet in my purse. If I go jogging, walking, ride in a car with a friend, I don't carry my purse or my wallet. I ONLY carry my wallet et al with me if I am driving a car or plan to spend money. I would say that is true of many, many people, particularly women, who carry purses.
It appears many of you haven't read this law. Even our Maricopa County attorney ( a Republican) begged the Governor to veto it It is a non-funded mandate that will more than likely bankrupt the state.
It is also very vague as to it's limitations. Many innocent, lawful citizens will be harassed. Most of our police officers (who are at bare minimum BTW thanks to this twit Governor) will have to try to enforce this idiocy instead of tending to crimes that they should be addressing.

Not one of them pertain to this law unless it is the Act of 1964 which in now way addresses this new law. There is absolutely no langiage to address any race or single individual other than those without proper authorization to be in the State of Arizona.
Go look up State of Arizona vs US Government 1997, you will see the Government itself excuses itself from enforcing local enforcement of immigration. It even states that the States have the Right to detain and dispose of illegal entrants at their discretion.

What was the prime drive behind the law? Illegal Immigrants. Which illegal immigrants? Primarly Mexican (Hispanic). So, who is going to be targeted by this law then? Yes, Hispanics. Are all Hispanics in Arizona illegal? Nope...and that's where things get sticky.
If they are only targeting people who are stopped for questionable activities, then this law is stupid because one would have to assume that the illegals, when discovered, were handled in the same way: removed from the country.
So that leads me to believe this law does a little something extra, like allowing cops to just start asking for IDs based upon...what?

I HAVE been stopped and asked for ID. I carry my birth certificate with me at all times, along with drivers license, insurance card, and can answer questions regarding my family history at any time. I have nothing to fear from the police stopping me. I can also verify that my fingerprints are also on file with FBI and SBI because of two jobs I had. No, I would not have a problem at all with being stopped. In fact, I would be happy to be stopped because I could prove with out a doubt that I was born here as 5 generations of my people have been. I am happy that someone is finally standing for getting rid of this scum no matter WHERE they came from.

Obama shut your mouth unless you are ready to act like a President and get something done. There are an estimated 1.5 million illegals coming across our boarders every year of which .5 million stay. The Spanish speaking population now makes up over 1/3rd of the population and iff the illegals were taken into account would be very close to half. Understand that it is not just Spanish Speakers from South of the Boarder. We get a great many across our Northern boarder also. Most of these folks keep a low profile and are generally preyed upon but some do cause crime. Some are here for even more sinister reasons and a terrorist could easily slip across any of our boarders and probably has. Arizona's approach is not the right one though. But the Federal Government by it's inaction is even worse. We, this Country, need to discuss a rational policy and implement it and enforce it. The one we have now does nothing but encourage illegals by requiring large sums of money and proficiency in a foreign language for most legal immigrants. I just brought my family here from Thailand. It cost me $21,000 to do it legally. I actually had a lawyer recommend that I get them to Mexico and smuggle them across the boarder. Then wait for the next amnesty. So much for our wonderful immigration policy. It is broken and those idiots in Washington don't have enough smarts to fix it. It doesn't have to. If a case is brought to trial and it is shown that it singles out one specific race of people it's doomed. Quite a few laws in the South specifically said Black people. However, all of them used crafty language which pretty much said Black people. Instead of Negroes, a state law might say indentured servants, etc which pretty much targeted the same group of people.
This is a "mandate" If a person looks, dresses wears their hair or cloths in a fashion that might be ETHNICLY Mexican, the police are required to stop them and ask for proof of citizenship.

I'm tired of my tax money going to educate, find jobs, and pay for medical expenses for people that are illegally here in the first place. I beleive that first they should know how to read and speak the language before they even apply for citizenship. I live in Tucson, Az. And this is the best news I have seen in years. I am so happy this passed. Not only is this going to allow police officers to focus on important problems and apprehend dangerous and non-dangerous criminals. Yes, all illegal immigrants are criminals. That is why they are called illegal immigrants. They broke the law to get here. I could care less about their families, or their hardships. I really couldn't care. Get out. I don't care if you consider yourself a "law abiding citizen" because your not. If you were then you would have your documentation legally. I don't care how tough the process is. If you want to change your own countries (Notice I didn't only say Mexico) then you need to start with a revolution and overthrow your own government. That's how the United States came to be. This will probably be largely ineffective even if it is found to be constitutional. The most effective policy would be to go after the employers. After all, economics is the motivating factor of illegal immigration. So, why not go after employers? Is it because corporations are the largest campaign contributors? This is a win-win for the politicians and the corporations. The politicians win votes by passing ineffective but popular legislation that will be found to be unconstitutional, and they don’t alienate the corporations in the process.

Like I said before it doesn't have to. If it only goes after Latinos it will be struck down as unconstitutional. If they don't produce evidence that the law is applied to all citizens no matter the color, no matter the time, no matter the place, or age it will be struck down. Even then if it is shown that the law was created for a specific race of people that could be enough to also have it overturned.
Why waste time and resources stopping suspicious people on the street to see if they are here illegally? Law enforcement knows the industries most illegal immigrants work in, so they should go after those industries. If illegal immigrants cannot find employment, they will go back home. We have already seen this happen because of the recession. The jobs they vacate will be forced to pay a higher wage and offer better working conditions to attract legal labor.
There are some of you here stating that you don't carry your I.D. with you all the time now, like when jogging, etc. I'd rethink THAT practice if I were you. Perhaps when you get stabbed or shot by an illegal alien, law enforcement will be able to identify your body sooner. Also, you state it as if it would be a BIG imposition if you needed to carry it on your person when jogging, etc. Tuck the damned license in your bra, or make sure you have on pants with a pocket. Now that isn't so hard, is it?

That is pretty much what we did in Oklahoma 2 years ago. We passed legislation that requires proof of citizenship if you are arrested, or apply for a job. It also puts heavy fines on companies that hire illegals. I think there is also something about big fines if you are caught harboring, or transporting illegals. Seems to be working well.

Not too many years ago, the problem of the more and more was an environmental and ecological issue, a progressive issue, because the more and more of the mushrooming cloud of human beings was the most pronounced and profound ecological/environmental issue of the times. Can this nation and its dwindling natural resources really afford the more and more of indigent, illiterate, unconscious, breeders, pulling the quality of life into the less and less?

More and more demands on energy resources, food, infrastructure and all natural resources, which undermine the future and the very quality of life for legal Americans.

Good grief. Would you think for a second please? How can you tell the difference between and illegal Latino versus a legitimate Latino American? You need to check for ID. Right? Well if the law isn't equally applied to all Arizona citizens guess what? It's unconstitutional. That's one way.
The second way is that if the law singles out a specific group of people unintentional or not it also can be struck down as unconstitutional. The words "brown people" or "Latinos" is irrelevant. The law doesn't need to list races specifically in order to be struck down. There's tons of examples of this.
Like I said before I'm for immigration reform, but this isn't the way to do it. The solution is so simple it's staggering. You apply a $10 million dollar fine to the corporations for hiring illegal immigrants and this whole problem would be fixed within one day. The reason why it isn't being dealt with in this way is that both Republicans and Democrats are protecting the businesses that's why. So instead of doing it the easy way your government is potentially going to step on the civil rights of Latino Americans when it doesn't need to be dealt with in that way.

I have traveled all over the world. I have to show a passport whenever I enter a foreign country, EVEN Canada. I see posts about no passport required to enter Mexico from the US and I wonder if that is true anymore.
People never used to have a passport to enter Canada from the US and the passport requirement started being enforced last year I believe. I know this for a fact as I travel to Canada frequently.
If I need to carry my passport, I will. I'll even advocate that my passport be wallet sized so I can carry it with me like a drivers license.
However, by my accent alone, I am certain to pass for American. I speak American English.

I am saddened that one of our states has come to this point. I would be willing to wager that most of the people supporting this measure also believe Obama is not really an American, oppose a Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, and are living in a state of fear and scapegoating. I feel sorry for these folks. It is interesting that a good percentage of the comments I have seen regarding this law find it necessary to say, "I am not a racist, but........" Any reasonable and honest person knows that this law is specifically targeted at Mexicans. The effect of this law would be to have any "Undocumented-looking" person on the street stopped and forced to succumb to questioning along the lines of, "I need to see your papers." How many people out there carry their original Birth Certificate with them at all times? Even if they were to, there are some people out there who question the authenticity of our own President's Certificate of Live Birth. What about children on their way to school? They could be stopped and asked to produce their papers, then deported if they do not have them. I have raised six children, and sometimes getting them to deliver a notice from school or bring home a piece of homework is difficult enough. THIS TYPE OF LEGISLATION IS UNAMERICAN. It reminds me of the story of Felix Longoria, who was killed in World War II. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor because he was brave above and beyond the call of duty when he gave his life for this country, saving other GI's in the process. Yet his hometown in Texas refused to allow him to be buried in the local cemetary because they had a "No Mexican" policy. National outrage resulted, with Eleanor Roosevelt and even the great Walter Winchell denouncing such a shameful stance and exhorting people of good will to let their opposition to this disgraceful refusal be heard. Despite the uproar, he was refused the right to be buried in the local cemetary. But Dr. Hector Garcia rallied Hispanic GI's who formed the American GI Forum as a result. Longoria was eventually buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetary. When Cesar Chavez, who later led the United farmworkers Union, came back from serving his nation in the US Navy, he was refused service at a restaurant, while in full uniform, because he was Mexican. I remember watching television years ago and seeing Governor Wallace blocking African-American students from entering state college in Alabama. The same thing happened in Mississippi with Lester Maddox. Just because a Governor condones discriminatory laws do not make them just. Not that long ago a country forced people to "show their papers" upon request. Many complained this was singling people out or forcing them to provide documents over and over. They were given patches to wear on their clothing. See how understanding and non-racist that government was. This way "those people" did not have to repeatedly show their papers. Maybe Arizona's Governor can come up with a similar proposal to lessen the inconvenience on "good Mexicans" with their papers in order. I am half Native-American and half Hispanic American. The list of my family members who have served in the military is very lengthy (Bataan Death March, European and Pacific Theaters, Korea, Vietnam, First Gulf War, now in Afghanistan). A number of them bravely gave their lives, were wounded, or were POW's. No deferments and nearly all volunteers. I love this country with all my heart and would not hesitate to defend it against all enemies foreign and domestic. But tell me, you folks who keep saying you are the "real Americans." How would you answer a Native American if he were to ask you, "Who's the illegal alien Pilgrim? "
I am a legal immigrant and now a citizen. Having gone through legal channels and spending 10 years and several thousand dollars to earn my citizenship, I usually bristle when anyone suggests illegals should be given any amnesty. I am dismayed at the lack of political will to tackle this issue properly.
However - This bill in Arizona is not the answer. Behind this, i see a lot of thinly disguised racism masquerading as righteous indignation.
There is a real danger and concern about this law being used by Arizona law enforcement to harass people who look like they could be illegals. Which being a very subjective matter could mean almost anyone. To an officer with slight liberal leanings for example, a Mexican immigrant riding a bicycle in dirty jeans and faded t-shirt may appear to be suspicious - someone whose papers need to be checked whereas an officer suffering from full blown republicanitis may not want to spare anyone who is not lily white. Who is going to challenge them ? After all - now they don't need any reason other than just being suspicious. Not all immigrants carry their papers with them. The law does not require them. The fake European immigrant on page 1 saying he always carries his green card with him is lying through his teeth. Because if god forbid you lose your wallet and the green card with it, the legal and procedural hoops you will have to jump through to get it back scares the living day light out of all immigrants. Which is why most green cards stay locked in vaults in people's banks. Ditto for Passports.

Something about the tone and tenor of her response makes it hard for me to believe that her bile is reserved for only illegal immigrants from Mexico and suddenly confronted by a legal Mexican immigrant she would turn into an angel of american warmth, acceptance, large hearted-ness and welcome. I'm a white German/Italian, but I've had Mexican's ask me for directions when I don't shave for a day. So if I live in AZ, go the store to get milk say on a Saturday morning and a cop sees my unshaven. I might very well get pulled over and asked for my papers. What if I forgot my drivers license? I think it's a good idea for states to adopt legislation to do someting about people being here illegally, moreso if the government's not going to do anything. Like a lot of people have been saying, if you've got nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about.
There's a lot of talk about illegal immigrants having rights... but the rights they're talking about are supposed to only apply to US citizens. Perhaps morally, they have the right to not live in a country that oppresses them; coming to America removes that from their lives, gives them hope, and a chance to live rather than merely existing. So, if this is the case, come here the right way and do what millions of legal immigrants have done.
I also find it interesting that a lot of churches have taken up arms against what Arizona's governor has done - kinda violates that seperation of church and state thing, don't you think? Churches don't like the government getting into their business - but they won't hesitate to jump into something that, politically, they're not supposed to do.

We should be holding the federal government accountable for not doing their jobs in removing illegal immigrants, but we should not be taking matters into our own hands.

This is not a big deal at all, unless you are illegal. Every adult carries at least one form of I.D. Those who are legal aliens carry their documents. Honestly, if the Federal govt. had been enforcing the laws ALREADY ON THE BOOKS, Arizona would not need to pass bills like this to protect themselves. The immigration laws are not enforced because they are not enforceable. Never mind my suspicions on why this is such a pressing issue for so many. Some do have legitimate concerns, others are motivated by racism. (I was born at night, but not last night). We have legal means to enter the US. I truly feel for those who are so destitute as to sneak into this country to earn 5 bucks an hour picking crops but there must be a limit! I agree 100%, it is about time someone acted in the interest of the American people. We have to have documentation and prove who and where we are when asked, nothing less should be expected from non-citizens.
I suppose this was to be expected. These people demonstrate against enforcing immigration laws as if these illegal’s have a right to sneak in to this country and remain. It’s been so long since anyone actually proposed enforcing the law that the prospect of any immigration enforcement it comes as somewhat of a shock to them.
There has been the usual rhetoric such as it will be ineffective (if they truly thought that they wouldn’t be raising such a fuss) or it violates peoples rights (illegal’s have no rights).
Let’s not forget chairman Obama. First he would not do anything to secure any borders and enforce immigration law but when the states are compelled to do what the feds will not, he gets all indignant. We all know Obama views these illegal’s as a future democratic voting block that will perpetuate his regime.
We can learn lessons from Canada about illegal immigration. They have the situation locked down very well. Your kids cannot go to school without proof they are in Canada legally. You cannot get health care without proof of your identity with a provencial health card. You cannot get a job without proof of your identity. As a US Citizen -- we have a lot to learn about how well things can be controlled in the US if there is a will, there is a way...Canada is proof, and it really works. I have experienced if first hand! Is Canada sinister about it's enforcement. No. They have a ton of legal immigrants. And they all pay taxes.
The Tax system is very high due to the "so called free - health care" Last I checked it was 40% of payroll taxes plus 13% federal and Provence sales tax in Ontario. Plus Property taxes!

Has anyone actually read the law to see what it says about the circumstances where the police can stop a person?
I suspect that the police still have to have "probable cause to suspect a crime has been committed" before stopping someone. Then they are just supposed to verify the immigration status.
The Federal Government has conveniently refused to secure the borders and enforce the laws, so this is the result.
Civil Rights groups need to take a hard look at themselves and decide if they are going to fight perceived illegal activity which hasn't even occurred yet (profiling) or actual illegal activity (illegal aliens).

Right Jan, and everyone else who supports this bill. I live in Florida (for now), and have to deal with every other kind of illegal from Mexican border jumpers to the newly imported Haitians - all of whom are living off my tax dollars in the weird and ditzy state of Floriduh. I'm all for charity, but not at the expense of my own family or myself. And isn't charity about choice? Shouldn't we be allowed to choose who we give our charitable dollars to? It's a shame that Haiti had the quake first. It seems all the charitable money donations went there without a thought to the dozen or so more quakes that have hit since to the more viable nations instead of some little island full of lazy people. When you give everything to people like that, the givers run out and the takers are still sitting around doing nothing as usual - enjoying their lazy lifestyle. And hey, I'm all for it - live your life - but again not at the expense of others. You can't make the poor rich by making the rich poor. Then everyone is poor - or is that the whole idea?
As for Mexico - has anyone noticed the richest person in the entire world lives there. So why doesn't he dig into his own deep pockets and get rid of all the drug cartels that are overcoming and killing off the people of his own country. Maybe his own people would feel safe enough to stay then. And as for the bill that they are fighting, ummm fellas and gals of Mexican origin, this is our country, not yours. Now if you want to come here and live legally the way my grands did back in their day - good. I watched the Spanish station as Governor Brewer signed and the people outside. I thought about my grandfather who was bilingual but never taught his American children(one my father) English. He would take the family go on the"pisca" in the US but brought up his children in Mexico. I was the first if my family to go pass a grade school education. I have experienced racism, discrimation throughout my fifty years of life. History is a subject that I love and it never ceases to amaze me how it gets repeated. We as Americans on this land forget the natives that have "cultivated" not only the land but the building of America. It reminds me of how America treated Blacks during the civil war & the 60's, the treatment of the Japanese Germans during WWII and the American Indians from the onset. It reminds me of South Africa where one minority group governed a native major group. I remember throughout my education and wondering on my birth certificate that it showed that I, my father and my mother were white. Although I am of Mexican ancestry and have discovered that my race is indian and my culture is Mexican. I have learned that people's fear and hate can overcome them during a time of economic strife. I may add not by the powerless minorities but the greed of those in power who care nothing to what happens to the common American. I just continue to pray that peaceful resolution can continue because there are unlawful people throughout any culture and race but this is not the solution. My suggestion would be to bring all of those concerned to the table and include those communities that would be affected and start from there.
Way to go AZ! I have yet to see one person against this law make a sane argument. Some being as stupid as comparing this to Nazi Germany. Drive a car, you need a valid drivers license. If we wanted open borders we would not have made laws that says you only come in thru the front door not climbing in thru windows etc. My family came in legally thru Ellis Island. These illegals remind of kids that think its ok to cut in line and not be punished. These illegals no matter what country they are from still need to follow our laws. If your are illegal go back to your country until you can come here legally and follow our laws. All the candidates for Governor in California should take notice. My vote will go to the one that supports Arizona and this law. I don't care what party they represent. The people of California are as fed up with the illegal immigrants as anyone. Under the 14th Amendment, people born here are citizens.
But the States can expell the parents if they are not legal. The child would then become a ward of the state. The parents can try to get their children back, but the children would be going to the parents country, not the other way round.
There is no constitutional protection for illegal parents. Anchor babies only work because we allow the parents to stay with the child.

Finally a state that's done the right thing. There might be a lot of illegals that don't like it but there are hundreds of million Americans that applaud it. The federal goverment is powerless, especially now so the states have to do what the states have to do. Several years ago living in California the cost to the state just for medical care for illegals was over a billion dollars a year not to mention all the other services and costs.

I say good job, it is about time someone did the job our wonderful government is not willing to do, it also has nothing to do with race. It has to do with securing our boarders and making our country safer, you would think that they (Government) would have shut down the boarder after Sept 11 2001, to prevent any more terrorist from getting into our country but it was never done, that alone has troubled me for the longest time.
All Arizona is doing is enforcing the laws of our country, it is illegal to be in this country if you are not a citizen, we do not have enough work for our own people and we need to send all people who are not in this country legally back to where they came from. I live in California and have seen many people lose their friend and family members to the drunken drivers who have no license or insurance and are not a citizen, our jails are overcrowded with them as well as the many criminalswho come with them across the boarder. They are costing us Billions of dollars every year and have caused emergency rooms to close all over the country due to them not paying for services received.
I personally Know people who have immigrated here the legal way and they are pissed off about the whole immigration reform scam that the government is trying to do, they spent the time and money to come here the right way and they are not all from Mexico or south of the boarder, many are from the European countries and the middle east and where many of them come from you will be sent to prison for a very long time if you are not legally in their country many countries will also shoot you for crossing the boarder.
And one last thing, it is not a right to be here in this country if you are not a citizen, it is not a violation of civil rights to ask where you were born or what your status is or can I see your greencard, if you dont like the way we do things in this country then go back where you came from and do something to change it there.
Those who are legal Latino immigrants should be grateful! If the law is enforced it will weed out the drug dealers, convicts etc and protect them too. It's not a civil rights issue at all. We all need to show our ID at the airports, hospitals, banks etc. Who cares! I think most of us don't mind having to show it if it means we are doing so to protect our country and families. For those of you that don't know jack about the law or the Constitution, you need to take a little time and educate yourselves and quit using laws or Supreme Court Cases that don't apply. Here are some that do.
In PLYLER v. DOE the Supreme Court Stated: "Although the State has no direct interest in controlling entry into this country, that interest being one reserved by the Constitution to the Federal Government, unchecked unlawful migration might impair the State's economy generally, or the State's ability to provide some important service. Despite the exclusive federal control of this Nation's borders, we cannot conclude that the States are without power to deter the influx of persons entering the United States against federal law, and whose numbers might have a discernible impact on traditional state concerns".
In Manigault v. Springs the Supreme Court held that state and local police power is"an exercise of the sovereign right of the Government to protect the lives, health, morals, comfort and general welfare of the people."
In De Canas v. Bica the Supreme Court held that "the fact that aliens are the subject of a state statute does not render it a regulation of immigration. Even if such local regulation has some purely speculative and indirect impact on immigration, it does not thereby become a constitutionally proscribed regulation of immigration that Congress itself would be powerless to authorize or approve".
These are all relevant cases to Arizona's new law. It is a joke that Obama is even asking the Justice Department to look into the legalization of this law. All of you crying about this law need to pull your head out of your 4th point of contact or you might break your neck the next time you sit down. Read the law before you get on here and sound stupid. It doesn't say anything about stopping people on the street. Do you really think police officers have time to check everyone? If you do you are an idiot and have no clue what a day in the life of a police officer consists of.
Situation 1. If a person is driving and commits a traffic violation and is pulled over by the police, what are the things the officer asks for? Driver License, Registration, and Proof of Insurance. So the driver in question has no license. The cop asks for name and social and driver has no social or gives fake social. Police offficer suspects person is illegal and holds him or her until status can be ascertained. If they are legal they go free if not they are held and turned over to ICE. The law doesn't say anything about the state of Arizona deporting anyone.
Situation 2 A police officer notices a male driver as he approaches an area of known prostitution. The driver honks his horn or waves at a woman. The woman runs to the car and jumps in and the two drive off. The police officer suspects that an act of prostitution is taking place and pulls the car over. What is he going to ask the driver? License, Registration, and Proof of Insurance. The police officer will also ask the other person for their ID and run that info. If the person comes back as a known prostitute then the police officer can take it from there. Same thing with a truck pulling up to a street corner where a bunch of guys are hanging out. A truck pulls up and the driver holds up three fingers or one or how ever many and that many from the crowd jump into the truck. Wouldn't this be within the duties of a police officer to pull this truck over and ask for ID?
Situation 3. A bunch of kids are hanging on the corner in a known gang area where a crime was just committed. The police do a stop and frisk. They ask the kids for ID or ssn. If they have neither then the police might suspect that the kids are not legal and hold them until their status is verified.
Situation 4. Police set up sobriety checkpoints all over any given city and stop all drivers passing through that checkpoint. Again they are going to ask to see the license, registration, and insurance. If you don't have them and your ssn doesnt come up then they would probably have an inclination to suspect that you might not be a legal citizen and would then hold you until your status can be verified.
If a person has a valid driver's license or valid ssn then they have nothing to worry about. The only ones that have to worry about the law are the illegals or those that are driving them around and or employing them. No where in the law does the State of Arizona take over power from the Federal Government. The law makes it clear that law enforcement officers will hold suspected illegals and will no longer do the old catch and release routine.
One last thing to consider. Over two thousand people are killed nationwide by illegal immigrants that are DWI/DUI. One that comes to mind involved an illegal that had been caught three times driving DUI and was not deported. On his fourth DUI he killed two young ladies that were waiting for a traffic light to turn green. The father actually went before Congress and protested because the federal laws were not being adhered to. This law will allow family members such as him to sue a city or county or state if that entity knowingly released an illegal instead of holding them for deportation by the federal government.
For all the illegal immigrant amnesty pushing organizations that are shocked by this law. Too bad. For Rep Gutierrez of Illinois, we dont need you to come to Arizona and tell us how to run our state. In fact if I was the man I mentioned above that testified before Congress, I would have beat you like a Pinata. For the Catholic Church we now you need the millions of illegals to keep feeding your coffers to pay off all the law suits you are facing. To the Unions, The only reason you support the illegals is so you will have more Union members. You are all a joke and your true colors shine through. The voters of this country will not support you and will raise so much hell that the politicians in Washington will have no choice but to listen or be replaced.
One more thing - if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck it's a duck. The he11 with profiling - do it and get them out. Come back when you are legal and ready to pay taxes. One of the fundamental problems with our immigration policy is our active recruitment of higher intellect from the third world. For instance if you were in some provinces in the Philippines would you feel safe having your appendix out or say having a blood transfusion? I live in good 'ol Calif. which is over-run with illegals. I am not suggesting that there isn't a problem...there damn well is. However, this new Arizona law smacks of the Nazi era...no, I am not an old timer but have taken many history classes and know that they required anyone who looked different to show their i.d. I would not be against this policy if everyone in the fair state of Arizona (including the governor) had to show some form of i.d. whether each time they went to the supermarket, work or basically each time they left their home.
Mia....there is not likely that there would be checkpoints where all hispanic looking people are checked and moved out immediately....That is a great exagerated jump that you took. There are plenty of ways and times to check their legal status. When they sign up for welfare, school, food stamps, medical assistance, electricity assistance, drivers license, etc. In some states now they are checked when they commit a serious crime and they are sent to Mexico immediately after serving their time. I dont think there will be a million of them moved out on trains a week after the law is in effect like the Nazi extreme that you are worried about. It is more likely they will move to another state (like your Calif) when it comes time for them to be checked. Most countries (including Mexico) have much more extreme laws concerning illegal aliens than we do. Suggesting that it is similar to naziism is not reasonable.

Most Dr.s from the Philippines that are here in the US only qualify as RN's at the most here, not Dr.s. Most come here but are not able to stay, they are required to return to the Philippines. Mexican Dr.s very rarely come here to practice, most don't come close to qualifying. They don't have to, they set up shop in a border town and Americans go there and pay cash. *************Mexican Dr.s won't do the service unless they have the Peso's. They've been having babies in the Yucatan for quite a long time. The Mayanshad fertility rooms for women just so they would have lots of children. Some of those jungle witch Dr.s are pretty good even to this day. In saying that, I really doubt that Mexican women feel that having their children in an American hospital is a status symbol. Most are sent home very shortly after they deliver, alot go to get a record of the birth.. They are more concerned about getting the newest and biggest stroller from Walmart. Now that's a status symbol!!
The problem I see is that in Mexico, if someone needs medical help they go to the hospital. Most don't have primary care physicians. They treat their hospitals as clinics. They continue this practice here in the US because they don't have the money to participate in a medical program or the insurance, so they bog down our hospitals............. They need to go back to their own country and start fixing their country and stop messing with my country. I'm sick of them!!!!!

Arizona has one of the largest latino population & was one of the last to join the union. Many of the latino's (read mexicans) living there have been there longer than most of the whites. Why should they be singled out? Here in Calif. we have plenty of Euro trash walking the streets illegally - I don't hear anyone complaining about that. I am not condoning illegal immigration but feel that what Arizona is doing is just wrong. Also, as far as I can see illegal immigration has been an issue (at least in Calif.) for decades why the sudden outrage now? Why didn't this occur under Bush? Truth be told...if many companies & individuals did not employ them...they would not be coming here in the millions. We as consumers have also helped it thrive by shopping in the Walmarts of the world that push for cheap/cheaper/cheapest labor possible. I do my part by not shopping in places like that and I try to buy from companies that pay decent wages to their employees even if it costs me more...can you say the same?

Mia....Legal hispanics are legal and I dont think that they should have any fewer rights than I do. I have no problem with US citizens of any heritage and we should all be equal to pursue a quality based on our, and their, individual abilities. An unrelated but interesting fact of history concerns slavery and what is or isnt slavery. Many white Europeans(and others) came here and their passage was paid for by employers. Those employers held them in servitude for a specific number of yrs that was very much like slavery. Also, before California was part of the US there were many Mexican owned Rancheros there. The Mexican owners systematically rounded up native americans and made them slaves on those rancheros....Many of the Mexican owners were not even legal owners of the land they operated on....You see every thing is relative and history has never always been fair or pure for any group....

If you don't have a drivers license or ID guess what, the cop is going to detain you until he knows who you are, this includes everybody. There are too many businesses and stores, and places where legal Americans are looking for work, but we can't work because we don't speak their language. This is America! I won't deny that obama has good points on this on how to go about it and looking at what effects this could bring. This bill being signed is enough to get those illegals running for the hills and out of the country, but it can also be taken the wrong way by some who might be harboring these illegals or sticking up for them, and probably not so much about their rights. That can clearly happen, and violence can happen because of that. I think it's wrong and selfish to be harboring any illegal immigrants here, even if they are relatives or friends, IT'S WRONG. But I do want this bill to happen for my state California, where it's heavily immigrant populated, and many illegals are still here and coming here taking our jobs, running businesses, stealing benefits , receiving health care, causing crime, and taking advantage. It's selfish, and this needs to be enforced in all states and made to be a national topic.
I hope there won't be bad effects of this in Arizona, and I hope people there will take it for what it is. If your here legally, this should not affect you , but there are legal immigrants out there harboring illegal immigrants and helping them get benefits in this country. That is selfish and un-American, and not wanted here. Obama should also start looking into these services that help these illegals obtain fake cards and fake paperwork. Many things need to be looked into.

For those complaining about having to show that they are citizens, I accepted and wore the uniform of my country when I was drafted. I didn't want to do it. I could have run away to Canada. But it was the right thing for a citizen to do. Now if I have to show my papers to help defend my country from illegal invaders, I'll do that without complaint. It's origin was from the fact that both Washington and Lincoln's birthday's were in February and a day was selected to honor them both. They both still have their birthday's recognized on calendars, but they are not national holidays, and the holiday has become a tribute to presidents in general, not just Washington and Lincoln.

Oh come on. I don't even think you are thinking about plight of the illegals here and what their lives are like living in a country where they have no rights. I have many Mexican and Latin American friends who really aren't supposed to be here. Several of them work in construction. It's nothing for one of them to work all week and then get paid half of what they were promised ...even get completely stiffed for the money. They are charged allot of money to be lead out of their own country as well. There are crooks everywhere, bottom feeders, those who would gladly benefit from their bad situation.
They're getting screwed in Mexico and they get screwed here too. Still, many of them say, it's better here than where they came from. Even though they love their homeland, they come here to make money because they can't in Mexico. They make it here and send it back to build something up there for themselves. Fact is, the majority of illegal immigrants are good, kind, hard working people working for low wages, basically living like slaves. Mexico offers government insurance plans but many can't afford the simplest of coverage and it takes a long time to see a specialist. That's another reason they come here.
It's not easy to have to make this sort of decision. This was supposed to all change when NAFTA was signed into being. Again, greed took over. Why don't you hold Mexico responsible? Have you any idea how corrupt Mexico's government is? If you want to do business with them you have to fill allot of palms from the bottom to the top.

IF you are not an indian and member of the occupying tribe you can only be on reservation land with invite or accompanied by a sponsoring indian. I ride and hunt on the Tohono Odham reservation with friends of mine who belong to this tribe. If the Indian Police catch you they will arrest you and charge you in court with tresspassing, just like the state of arizona will now do......

I agree I am English speaking immigrant and it really frosts my cookies with this 1 for English crap. A few years back my Dad was on a business trip to Miami, had a heart attack in the taxi heading to the airport.Luckily the cab driver realized what was happening and headed to the nearest hospital. The guys in the ER were great spoke English they called to inform us. When taken to a room not one nurse spoke English,one Doctor that was occasionally on spoke English and he would take pity and stop by to see the patients who spoke no Spanish.
I called the hospital several times frantic, trying to get information and the operator kept saying in broken English"no eenglish call later after de nite ok" and hanging up on me. Why the hell should someone coming to America an English speaking country on business or vacation be here with a Spanish translation Dictionary ???.Then to add insult they translated his name to the Spanish version,so when a operator who spoke some English came on she said "he's not here" I found them rude and very short... as they kept hanging up on me.
My older sister who is a nurse and fluent was able to fly down.He was at the same hospital. He was 75 years old scared ,cold , confused and upset. We were even more pissed when we found out that even the visiting priest , knew very little English. They claimed he was unresponsive and hard of hearing when the problem was they kept calling him by the Spanish version of his name and speaking to him in Spanish and he kept trying to talk in English .
It should be illegal to speak any language other than English in the United States. The penalty should be immediate expulsion from the country.

Okay here's what happens in Arizona, cops pulls you over, you have an out of state license and no passport on you. You and your family will be arrested and taken to the police department. All the while your car is towed away. once they figure you are an american citizen, they let you go. You have to pay over $400 to get your back from the tow company. Get the picture? If a cop is having a bad day, he will make it worse for you and humiliate you in front of your family. Why? Because he can! Arizona has the most corrupt police force. The cop can only pull you over if you're speeding, driving recklessley, etc (ie: breaking the law). Sure, cops will pull over an out-of-state speeder more often than an in-state one probably, since they figure you won't be around to fight the ticket. So don't speed through AZ.
If the cops are corrupt in AZ, that's a separate issue from illegal immigration. It should also be delt with, not used as an argument for not fixing other problems.

So, get a passport!! Anyone with about 20 minutes to spare, $97.00, and the time it takes to get a picture taken should have a passport anyway. Providing that the individual is not a felon. It takes about 9 days to receive the passport. I got mine in 6 days. Good for ten (10) years.

Try to get into any emergency room and be the only white face there. Try to shop in any store and hear more foreign language spoken than English AND be shoved/pushed out of their way. Try to recover your expenses or worse when an illegal with no insurance hits and runs you. Try driving down the freeway being blocked by illegals pulling junked vehicles stuffed with scavenged yard sale finds and dumpster treasures traveling @ 50 MPH. Try using any state park or public facility and you will be harrassed, crowded, and overrun by homeless illegals. Try enjoying a camping trip with your family to have to fend off illegals begging for water, stealing anything not locked up and seeing the tons of trash they drop everywhere they go. 2. I assume you've heard of computers, since YOU'RE ON ONE. If you have a valid ID, from any state, it will take all of a minute for a cop to run the number and check citizenship status.
As a non-resident of AZ, I will happily bring my passport should I go there. What's the big deal? They're $120 bucks, and they last for 10 years over the age of 16. That's $12 a year, a buck a month. I firmly believe we need a national ID card, but hey, in the meantime passports will do. You might agree if you cared about American citizens like the dead rancher as much as you seem to care about criminals.

Arizona is the First state to demand that the laws of immigration on the books be enforced. Cops here in Arizona have to be careful if they want to come home alive. There are dope runners and human smugglers willing and able to pop you in the head with several bullets. In 1975 in order to come here my family had to fill out papers, wait and wait and proof we could afford to come to the US and promise to never ever be on public welfare. Which my mother managed to do while raising 4 children on her own. Working 20 hrs a day in her business. When I say 20 hrs, I am not exxagerating. Towing companys are bound by a state contract as to what is to be charged when your car is towed by a law inforcement officer they CAN NOT charge any more or less then what the contract states PERIOD ! So get back to Mexico and get a LEGIT license or become a LEGAL resident here with a AZ license AND INSURANCE and your car will not be towed !

I am a supporter of legal immigration that is what makes us unique from other countries. Immigrants make the US better. There some bad apples but most immigrants are ok. I haven't read the AZ law, but what I heard is that the police can ask for ID to suspect illegals and has broader power. Despite of my leftist views, I don't see what is the problem with that. This law will affect more American citizen liberties more than the immigrants.
Those immigrants from Latin American protesting because "Liberties Lost" should be already used to that. I have been in Latin and South America and is common for law enforcement to check ID with or without any reasons.
I do not see what is the big deal the cops check for ID WITHOUT race profiling, that way we may even get some people with warrants out of the streets.

What I have heard Obama say about immigration is that he wants a Federal Immigration reform by securing our borders and stopping the influx of illegals and provide a pathway for illegals already here to become residents. It makes sense because it would cost too much find and deport all illegals. That I think is fine, but before granting them residence they need to go through an extensive background check and a culture compatibility. What I mean is that we need to determine that they can respect the American culture and not try to change to what they want. I am not saying to renounce to their culture but respect the American one.
The another problem is when we talk about immigration we immediately focus all our attention to the Mexico border and we forget that illegals come also in planes, boats, the north border and from other races. We have a law that says when a Cuban reaches US soil the get green cards, I do not see too many people complaining about that. Instead of doing that we should be working towards enhancing Cubans' life in their home country.

As for the bill passed in Arizona, I think that this is probably the greatest thing to happen. The Washington DC crowd has refused to do anything about the illegal people coming into this country and to Arizona, and a rancher lost his life to one of them while on HIS ranch!! The next step is to build the fence across the border, then put in 1000 yards of a mine field and then have Delta Force on permanent patrol instead of a bunch of outnumbered Border Patrol Agents.

Visitors tracking system and holding their employees and US family accountable if the individual overstays.
Find ways to reduce reasons for them to come and stay illegally.

If amnesty is chosen to solve the immigration issue, then doesn't that make an immigrant a legal citizen? A citizen that can vote come election time...

I agree. It's about time we enforce out laws. I have no problem with legal immigration and even a guest worker program at some point but the illegal immigration has to stop.
IF amnesty is chosen to address the effects of the immigration issue, It would make undocumented immigrants legal citizens eventually not immediately, going by the last time amnesty was given by the Regan Administration, they would have to file the paper work and pay fines and wait for their paper work to go through which take years.

If you're here illegally you have no civil rights....get over it! In fact you haven't a right to anything especially health care, and an education. Frankly, I'm quite tired of paying for the millions who do think that way.
Well illegal aliens keep their property in Mexico and then live in the US for us to pay for them since they can get welfare and food stamps. They never left their citizenship to be US citizens and when you talk to them they fly the Mexican flag on their vehicles at home and then wave it on Mexico's holidays and expect those US citizens to accept their flag and language at home, school, and in government across this country. These illegal immigrants has caused the US problems by surrounding the US with their style of living which should remain in Mexico. If you live in the US you speak ENGLISH NOT SPANISH, If you live in the US you pay taxes to the US Government. IF you are wanting to live in the US you have to give up your citizenship of your original country and that includes property. If you are going to be a US citizen you need to be a US citizen all the way you no longer have dual citizenship.
I wish there was a way to get our rights back. They have taken over everything right down to our schools and I am tired of paying for it.
Wish all Americans could just stop paying taxes and take away their free ride and let them go home or support themselves legally.
I would help with bare hands build a damn wall to keep them out and I live in MI, and yes some will yell it is not right, but how many of them have fences around their own home for protection or live in a gated community?
Really would Americans be breaking a law if we decided to each bring a brick or two of our own and leave it along the border until a wall was built?
May you be tired to pay taxes for school but I pay too the taxes and never ask for a tax refund in my dark days and now almost I am a Citizen and you AMERICANS never realize the AMERICANS trash who live from those taxes why no say nothing about? and those AMERICANS born in USA who live below the bridges in all the cities.?

Okay, fine, Americans are from both the North and South American Continents. I will give you that.
Nobody says anything about the United States Citizens that are poor because they are LEGAL CITIZENS. I don't care if you're poor and here illegally or rich and here illegally. It is still ILLEGAL, and therefore a crime. Look at the immigration laws in Mexico and every other country in the world; they're much harsher than the ones here.
I am proud of my country, and I am a citizen of this country. People who break the law make me made. Illegal aliens are breaking the law. If people want to be citizens, then they can go through the damn work to do it rather than expecting handouts froma country they don't give a crap about in the first place.
If I also have to carry papers then so be it I am not offended many countries have these policies and do have to carry papers.

With the economy crashers in office we can ill afford to give any jobs in the usa away to illegals.
It is the duty of every state to enforce the laws. If the current administration wants to userp those laws causing harm to this nation, the states must take it upon themselves to look out for the legals and the few jobs the legals have left.

I am a legal immigrant, who came across..paid my fees to stay and work legally in this country. I feel just because the situation is bad in one country, doesn't give them the right to cross the borders illegally. President Obama do you realize that pregant women come to the border towns in Az because its easy and they want to have an America baby..so they can have legal status. You say we don't have the money for this or for that..the reason is because you allow the illegals the same right as us. I paid thousands of dollars to stay here and work..This was my choice. Don't tell me they don't have the money...they pay people to get them in here illegally.. so much they could be putting the money in our government. Unfortunately something has to be done. if your illegal...they shouldnt have the right to automatically expect citizenship...
1. the baby that is born in the US can apply for the US status when he/she is 18yrs (that is their right not the right of their parents.,
2. migrant labors...we have jails/prisons full of petty criminals, welfare people...make them do the crop collections..let them earn and pay for their crime.. and am not talking about the hard core criminals...
3. if you are found to be an illegal...send them to the border towns of Az. and walk them back across. find companies that our hiring illegals...-money for the government and its citizens.
4. they are humanity reasons to keep some of the illegals, but in the past people have usually come in legally.
5. People complain about the illegals...free assistance, free medical (no one can be turned away), don't have to pay taxes - lost revenues, get the drift..
The US government needs to start thinking about their own citizens..because there is ways away to get help. I'm tired of hearing the bleeding hearts go but they live in poor conditions. Yes they do, but look around... we have homeless people - not because of their own choice, we have honest hard working Americans losing their jobs, losing their homes, their families..because of wasted revenues. You can't fix everything or everyones country. But you can start helping the legal US citizenships by standing firm and saying no to people who are illegal.
I'm also here legally. I say AMEN to this. I hope the other 49 ball-less governors follow suit.

Know first hand how things work, lost my job and health ins. when the economy crashed. Tried getting some help while looking for work but was turned down for health ins. and was given $16 a month in food stamps. Have two sisters who work in the health dept. who see illegals getting health care everyday. Now you tell me thats right. Maybe I should have just thrown all my IDs away and said I speak no English, maybe I would have gotten a little help then.

Victor M. Aguilar - if you are here illegally you should be deported. You and any of your associates that are here illegally have no right to be here. There are many legal paths to citizenship in this country. Ask the thousands of technology professionals from India that have become citizens or are here on visas and working towards citizenship. Maybe the people from Mexico should take some lessons from how the people of India manage to get into this country "LEGALLY!"
Hopefully bills like this will start to appear in other border states as well. People will get their feelings hurt, but the law is the law. If I have to follow laws in this country so should others, whether citizens or illegals.
And what's this nonsense about fairness that Obama's blathering on about? Since when are things fair here?? If I recall correctly, the last decade has been pretty good to those in power who don't really have to answer to anyone for their actions, and to those who are swimming in money. Meanwhile, those who do honest work everyday and live paycheck to paycheck get squeezed more and more. Fairness fell off the back of the ship a long time ago Obama, get with the program.
