Go figure. A law finally stating it's illegal to be an illegal alien and everyone is pissed off! All these border jumpers need to go back and then return through LEGAL channels, if they want it so much rather than getting something for free.

This law is a terrible idea, and probably not Constitutional, even Karl Rove has expressed regret it passed.

This is also and issue that could threaten to shatter the new Conservative / Libertarian alliance. Libertarians have only recently come back to an uneasy accord with Conservatives on fiscal issues as shown in Tea Party activism, but if Conservatives push too hard on this they will shatter that and turn off the moderate and independent leaning voters in the middle who they need to put the country back on the right path economically, away from the collectivism and government growth that's been spread recently.

I don't begrudge anyone trying to enforce immigration law. People should not be here illegally. But the fact of the matter is that our immigration policy is ridiculously broken, with caps set far too low for the number of people we allow in legally every year, which drives this nonsense. Most of that is just a result of mindless xenophobia. The fact is that immigrants add to the economy far more than they take out. Immigrants do not just come in and take jobs, they are people, and they create demand for goods and services too. Not only that, but those who come in and expatriate American dollars to families abroad also jack up demand for American exports, adding to the domestic economy. When we have hard working people looking for jobs here, that's a good thing.

The problem is the demand for access to the American labor market far outweighs the artificial price ceiling we've put on it, and much like any other economic price control, this is failing hard, driving a wedge that creates gross inefficiencies in the labor market.

But the larger problem with this particular law is that the "reasonable suspicion" of someone being an illegal is too broadly defined. It gives law enforcement broad power to discriminate, and that is not Constitutional.

They ought to have just required an immigration check on EVERYONE who was stopped for any crime at all, regardless of "suspicion". Get stopped for speeding? Immigration check. Get stopped for a bar fight? Immigration check. Now, that could cause privacy issue concerns, but it would have been about the only way to keep this from being struck down on discrimination charges.

So, use the law to find and deport the illegals we have, but we're never going to be free of this problem until we fix our immigration policy on the whole. And the only way to do that is to do the smart thing from an economic perspective - up the artificially low caps we have on people who can come here legally.

I've been doing this for years, but Americans need to get off their butts and do the jobs that the illegals are doing. Too often I hear: There's no way I'm doing that kind of work, I'll just stay on unemployment till I find what I like. The way I see it: a job is a job, and any job will put food on the table including working at a fast food place. @Shawn... in conjunction with the AZ law, we also need to REDUCE the amount of welfare paid to individuals who can actually work, give them only food stamps (preferably, a card for FOOD only - no cash back, with fingerprint verification req'd - so they can't 'sell' it for cash), MINIMAL housing, MINIMAL clothing (a card for CLOTHING only - from Goodwill or Salvation Army). If they want NEW clothing, TV, cable, computer, internet access, cell phone/service, a car or any other non-essential --- GET A JOB! I live in Iowa, about 40 miles from the Swift turkey plant, which regularly hires illegal aliens, pays them 6.00 an hour, no workman's comp, no benefits. Why do we not enforce fines, sentences for tax fraud, IRS tax evasion, etc. If there were no jobs, there would be no illegal aliens. What about the guy with the pickup that picks up 5 people to pick tomatoes? Can't we design a season pass (using Mexican insurance cards that they have in Mex), allowing aliens to come in for the season to pick tomatoes and peppers. Face it, we don't want to pick tomatoes, College kids don't want to pick them. If the season pass is good enough and valuable, they will not risk losing that pass by coming in the off season for work. They will work, then go home until next year.

I grew up in a neighborhood near the barrio in Tucson. Our primary schools taught in English & Spanish, which has served me well over the years. I don't feel I suffered by growing up in a mixed neighborhood -- although I admit there was not the problem with drive-by shootings that currently exist. But if you cram enough mice into a cage without sufficient resources, violence is going to occur -- white mice, brown, black -- you name it.

All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

Nowhere is it stated that people who are in this country ILLEGALLY have the same rights as citizens of this country!!

Amendment 4 specifically states "The right of the people....." I think that means CITIZENS, of this country. But then, since the progressive movement started spreading we've stopped making much progress.
