Well, I'm expecting the whole "sanctity of marriage" crowd to be out mocking the fact that these two people will be divorcing. Funny how they hold marriage in such high regard...until two progressives are getting a divorce (not to mention in a way that seems to be mutually supportive and without drama)...then, all of a sudden their marriage is fair game for insults and name-calling. It seems to me that any divorce would be viewed as sad and unfortunate...but, not by the "christian values" crowd.

I am always sad when a marriage ends. Mine ended after almost 44 years but was due to death not divorce. I can say I have learned so much about my husband after he was gone with no way of getting him back. Of course I never wanted to get rid of him at all. At least these two can change that if they find 40 years is a lot of time and memories to throw away. It is always nice to have a choice!!!

Been married 38 years this week. Had four children all raised without a police incident. Since I think I'm some what of an expert, I can tell you raising those four kids and putting them all thorough college/vocational school was much easier than staying married.
You have your kids, you raise them, they go away (usually) and then all you have is each other. It's much harder to stay married than to raise your children.

As a conservative, I may disagree with Al's leftist beliefs, but I get no pleasure at all from hearing that his marriage is failed. Niether do I wish his family any harm. This is a private matter between the Gores, they have thier own decisions to make and to live with.

What they actually do is compare the number of marriages to the number of divorces in any given year. So if fewer people get married in the first place, opting to live together instead, that in itself automatically makes the divorce rate appear to go up, even if the number of divorces actually remained constant that year. Also, the divorce rate is artificially inflated due to the people who marry young and then divorce soon afterwards, often several times. It is actually fairly rare for a long-married, older couple to divorce.
I never cared for Al Gore, but Tipper always seemed to have grace and class. Hope they find what they are looking for. Many of us conservatives do not agree with Gore's politics, but I don't know of anyone who is finding joy that these two are splitting up. Let's grow up and give them some peace.
I'm not an Al Gore fan, but the dissolution of any marriage, regardless of political party, is sad ... for the couple, their children (if there are children), and for their extended families. First off, I'm Jewish, not Christian, and I'm an accountant. I'm sure I understand statistics better than you do. You are mixing apples and oranges. Divorce rate = number of divorces filed IN ONE YEAR compared to the number of marriage license applications made IN THAT SAME YEAR. That isn't remotely the same as "all divorces vs. all existing marriages". If it so happens that fewer people marry in the first place in, let's say 2010, then automatically the divorce rate appears to go up by that criterion even if the actual number of divorces remains static. Existing marriages aren't affected in the least. The facts show that long term marriages are far less likely to break up, which is just what any rational person would expect. The average divorce happens after something like 3 years of marriage.
BTW, if the rate is calculated based on filings, as it is in some jurisdictions, then it is VERY possible to have several divorces for the same marriage. There are some couples that file for divorce numerous times but never go through with it. (It's been four times for my husband and me. We live in a state that requires two years for a contested divorce, and we always reconcile in that time period.) There are also many couples who go all the way through with a divorce but later remarry--however, that case wouldn't really affect the statistics.
Please think this through. Most people do marry eventually, so if half of all marriages really broke up, half of the people you know would be divorced. The actual rate is closer to 25% Unless all your friends are never-married, gay, members of the priesthood, or just plain neurotic, are half of them divorced? In my entire large extended family, there is only ONE completed divorce, and that involved a husband who came out as gay. My husband has ONE relative who is divorced (due to her husband's alcoholism.) NONE of my friends are divorced; some are never-married, though.

Of course it's always sad when older people divorce, but at least their kids are grown and neither will be hurting financially. So you could argue that this divorce is far less harmful than the usual variety involving minor children and limited assets to divide. RRobeson, you're probably right that they'll both end up regretting it, but again, with so many problems in the world, is either one of them really at the top of your list when it comes to needing our sympathy?

Rrobeson, my mother stayed married to my dad much longer than she should have, more due to inertia than anything else. Even though the marriage wasn't happy, she had a comfortable life and wasn't UNhappy enough to make the move to leave. Then she had two close friends die within the space of a couple of weeks - one 50 years old and one 55 - and decided that life was too short for her to NOT be happy. And yes, after she and my dad divorced. they actually became good friends - because they WEREN'T living together. So I don't know what point you're trying to make about your parents. Are you saying they should have stayed married, since obviously they got along so well? That's nonsense. my point was that only their perspective changed after divorce, not their reality. After being separated for awhile and not finding a new life filled with wonder and excitement they thought was missing, they suddenly realized that their shared life together was better than any 'new' relationship. The only thing they went through was realizing that their individual happiness alone was up to them not their partner, and therefore happiness with anyone else was also 'up to them'. They never got back together because my mother never gave up her dream of finding a new life and being happier.
I should note that theres was never an 'abusive' relationship. Those should always be ended ASAP.

When my husband and I can afford it, we do just that by purchasing a fixer upper that either of us can escape to when we need to have "spaces in our togetherness" to paraphrase Khalil Gibran. My ideal would be owning both halves of a side by side duplex so I could have all the animals he's allergic to and he could have his own hobbies that I'm not crazy about. We'd still be faithful mates in every way, just with his and her separate "dens". Where did the idea come from that you don't have a proper marriage unless you live under the same roof?
