As usual the repubs couldn't care less about the little people. They are too busy trying to bail out BP
The tone of the article isn't solely about GOP opposition... though there certainly is. There are individuals within the Democrat's herd that have issues with the continued mix of spend and cut and then spend message that is being moved about and the realization that there is no end to this under the current plan(?).
The article catches the air of the confusion being wrought by the leadership of this country. They have no clear plan or strategy and nobody there who will make the tough descisions. The tax cuts... followed by adding more taxes... and as this article cites - the deduction to Medicaid payments... to now the postponing of the cut... and the cry for benefit extensions admist the rising debt - all shows the confusion and unclear message.
It's sad... and worse yet, we've gotten so fat and lazy that we lack the survivalist pioneering mentality that built this nation.
I think I would jump for joy if Senators, Representatives, POTUS, and SCOTUS decided to work for free and from there... began to cut the fat out of the government.
We do not have the money to pay for this; perhaps that concept to to difficult for you to understand. Where is the Budget Congress????????????
Rat, great analysis. The TPM has finally been heard loud and clear as evidenced by democrats refusal to put their necks out any further than they already are. Its time for political leaders on both sides to acknowledge what most of us already know, that we are in deep, deep, trouble, then devise a workable plan to stop the bleeding and turn this mess around. The only way out is to take whatever measures needed to insure growth in the private sector of our economy, exercise fiscal responsibility at all levels of government, implement real immigration reform that controls our boarder, implement a practical energy policy that eventually not only moves us toward independence, but potentially as an exporter of energy, evaluation of all entitlement spending - keeping those programs that are needed and can be made to be 100% self sustaining and phasing out those that are government ponzi schemes. Thats just for starters.
Studies have consistently shown that most unemployed don't get serious about getting a job (other than a "dream job") as long as they draw benefits. The rate of unemployment drops considerably after benefits end.
I'm not saying that it's easy to get a job for everyone now - but drawing benefits just delays the inevitable.
BTW - I've been there, done that. Don't whine, just get out there and get SOME type of job.
If the Democratic Congress could, they would probably extend unemployment benefits indefinitely just to ensure voters. How long should someone expect to collect unemployment anyway? 13 weeks? 26 weeks? 52 weeks? A year-and-a-half? It starts to get ridiculous after awhile, doesn't it? Unless there is some definite end-point in receiving benefits, is there any real incentive to go out and get another job? Is this unemployment insurance or is it becoming just another Federal welfare program? And who is going to pay for all these extensions? Is it employers and other employed taxpayers? Maybe it is just the Chinese, as long as they keep buying Treasury Bonds. In which case, payment will ultimately fall to my children and grandchildren. @!$%#, what a country we are becoming!
Congress previously has extended benefits from 26 weeks to 99 weeks and they want more. It's time to stop feeding this tapeworm.
I feel terrible for those without a job...but if you have been without a job for 99 weeks.....then you are going to stay WITHOUT a job....and unfortunately it is true, until you really want a job, most on unemployment aren't going to look that hard. In these economic times, none of us will be making what we used to make. My husband took a 60% paycut and I pay for our healthcare....we are really struggling, but we are still working.........not at the rate of pay we would like, but we are working. So the stay at home mom's and those on extended benefits may have to change their way of thinking.
My sister owns a convenience store with a deli in a small town and can't get help because those on unemployment make better money than if they worked.....now that's a problem...but why else would people look for a job when it pays to sit on your butt.
We are broke people....the American taxpayer has been drained. I'm sorry these folks are going to lose their unemployment. Maybe if this president isn't given the latitude to write hot checks and is forced to deal with unemplyment by focusing on the economy, maybe we can begin to move forward.
Pretty sure if it was to only extend unemployment it would pass without a problem. The problem is all the additional stuff.

The Republicans might just be understanding that continued debt building and deficit spending does more harm to MORE (like all) of the "little people" in the long run, than the temporary benefit that another six weeks of UE might do to relative handful of "little people".

Corporations do not benefit when they lay off a person for lack of work. When there is no work nobody benefits.
About 10% of the private sector is unemployed, but the public sector has actually ADDED jobs during this recession. Those public sector jobs have to be paid for by fewer private sector jobs, so where does it end.
Also, the public sector unions have made sure, according to a recent study, that their workers are compensated at about 160% of the average comparable private sector job - their average cost is about $40,000 MORE per year than the private sector, much of it from their fat early retirement benefits.
Where is the "shared sacrifice" from the bloated government sector?
And please, don't give me that old "teachers, firemen and policemen are the ones that have to be laid off", because the majority of public workers are clerks and bureaucrats that sit in a cubicle all day and twiddle their fingers or play video games, watching the clock. I did that for a few years long ago, but then I got bored so I quit and found a "real" job with a challenge to it. I could have retired much earlier, with a fat pension if I stayed, but I would have turned into a vegetable, and it just wasn't worth it.

Actually, corporations only pay that tax for each person that's still WORKING for them. Once the employee leaves, the tax stops being paid.
I really don't think most Republicans would be against this Bill if the Dems got rid of the $16 Billion that is supposed to go to the states so they won't have to cut some of their public service union jobs. Why should people in other states have to help out sanctuary states like California and New York, if they got rid of all their illegals they would also get rid of most of their budget problems. Besides California's budget deficit alone would use up the whole $16 Billion and they would still be in the crapper. State employees are the States business and responsibility.
Many of you screaming against the Republicans about this Bill either conveniently overlooked or blew off the fact that Reid was the one that cut out the Federal supplement to those already unemployed so they could pay for teachers and other state workers to stay in their jobs. I guess you also forgot that the stimulus was supposed to save these same jobs and create more jobs when it was passed by the Dems last year.
So if you want to blame someone look no further than the President. When he called for the stimulus he stated that small businesses were the driving force and biggest job creators in our economy. Then he doled out hundreds of billions of dollars for both good and idiotic projects all across the U.S. and only allocated $3 Billion to the creation of more small businesses.
By the way there are still billions in the stimulus that haven't been spent yet, since the stimulus was such a joke, why not stop the rest of the money being spent and use what is left to pay for this Bill..... and a few others!

Millerz hits the nail on the head, if you don't work for a couple of years, even in a bad economy, employers stop hiring simply because they will assume (rightly or wrongly), you may not be very motivated.
When the entire Republican Party Senators vote against helping Americans in this recession, you have to conclude that the Republican Party DOES NOT CARE about the American people.
Those who would vote in November for the Republican Party should have second thoughts about voting for the Party of NO. No energy reform, no health care, no unemployment relief, no Wall Street reform, no environment policy etc, etc. What a terrible party! You have to really hate America to be a Republican. You know Common I always felt that even one party shouldn't be in control of everything and I see I was correct in my thinking. I always try to find at least one democrat that I can cast a ballot for. Not this year as a matter of fact I'm not sure I could ever vote for another dem. ever again.

Perhaps you should read what genroku wrote before putting your own spin and logic.
It is factual knowledge that the current recovery is a "jobless" recovery in which corporate profits are rising but with no increase in employment. What genroku was pointing out is that in addition to the labor cost reduction, corporations also benefit from no longer contributing to the indirect costs of maintaining an available educated workforce.

You sit back and whine and snivel just like the thin skinned President. You can't stand the Republican party so even though your own party is in power in both Houses of Congress as well as the Capitol, you will find a way to try to pass the blame. It doesn't work Common and lets see if you can get a little sense from this.
Cap and Trade is a joke, the people pushing this Bill are like Gore who has invested heavily in the hopes that this Bill passes. Lets look at the coal mines. I know some that are open pit in Alabama that are hiring right now. The starting pay isn't the best at $14 an hour but that is a lot more than those on unemployment are getting. Also those same mines require their employees to do not 40 hours a week but 56 hours a week. With the overtime that puts a new worker in the $900 a week category. Not too shabby for a new hire, although they may be a little tired at the end of the week. Plus the insurance benefits for them and their families takes away a lot of worries.
However; whiners and snivelers would rather stop those people from working because some left wing progressive scientists with an agenda and poor statistical and book keeping abilities try to sell everyone on the global warming thing. Instead of being one of the snivelers why not go out and see if one of these jobs is available around you.
In Arizona they are about to open a new Copper Mine just south of Tucson. They will be hiring hundreds of people and probably paying like the Alabama mines do. The only difference is, you will have to cut your own grass here because when our new law takes effect most of the illegals will be long gone.
Interesting to me how conservatives cut off unemployment.
1. the only way to qualify for unemployment is if you have worked before.
2. conservatives say no dems work because they are all on entitlement programs and getting aid from the government
3. so all of these unemployed lowlifes must be Republicans since they are the only ones who have ever worked to be qualified.
I've been up and down this post twice and can really see the sense of both sides arguments which doesn't happen often as it's usually cut an dry to me. The bottom line is we need jobs and the reality is that collecting unemployment can't go on forever. I don't see this as a Republican/Democratic idealogy problem as much as it's a problem of the mucky-mucks from both sides refusing to get along. What's going to happen when it's time to vote themselves a raise ? I like Ratpoisons' idea of seeing the Lugs that lead this country doing it for free but why not take it one further ? Why not only elect those that are willing to do it out of a love of country , do away with campaigns and the millions spent on propaganda and rely on open forum debate, turn politicing into a part time job that people could do after their nine to five stint, I mean they don't put that much time into accomplishing anything that three to five hours a night couldn't surpass with a group that would work together. I say first elect Mr. Greene in South Carolina to send the message that the gig is up, let it be known that there is no need to apply if you are looking for a cushy deal and let them all know what UNEMPLOMENT is really like. Also i would like to take exception to the folks who need to call unemployed Americans names like parasites or moochers as very few people really like sitting around feeling worthless and watching the world go by, that's just shameless and points to what the crux of the problem is , people don't care anymore and hope is ever fleeing from those that do. We sent how many of millions of dollars to Haiti just recently, we are always sendiing millions somewhere else and this is not the time to kick other Americans that are down, how does it get fixed? To: Michael Lockwood and all the others who oppose helping Americans. I know that we must get real jobs for Americans, but lets not look the other way when people are losing their jobs. Do you really believe that a person who is behind in his/her mortgage, credit cards etc, really prefer to lose their homes and live on the street so that they can collect unemployment. Please use some common sense. Yes, there are those that abuse the system. But not the majority! What will happen to millions of Americans that have no safety net. This is the way to build anarchy. The French Revolution, the Russian Revolution, the fall of the Rome Empire happened because the common man could not provide for him and his family. A country can not survive where only the rich can live. AND THAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE. Find it in your heart to consider the unfortunate.

I don't know how you got that I'm against supporting Americans out of my post. I would give everything I have to support AMERICANS. One of the problems with our economy right now is that Americans are having and have had to support millions of illegals. Lets get rid of them and send them back to their homes. A huge shovel ready job would be building the rest of the fence. I know the Border Patrol is and has been hiring. All of you displaced law enforcement and really anyone else that wants a job, there you go. Get off unemployment and serve your country. I also know that the Army's end strength is being increased by over 22,000. Another chance for thousands of people to give up their sofas and do something to support our Country. I'm all for helping out Americans, Common, but sooner or later many of them that should have been off the entitlement wagon a long time ago, need to get in line and do something else for a living. Giving out Billions and Billions and Billions has gone on too long. The stimulus was a complete waste of money. Had a person with a little common sense in business been in charge we wouldn't have wasted our money on temp jobs.
As for the teachers and other state workers again they are the responsibility of the state. They have robbed the common citizen with their overboard pension plans that aren't even close to being funded. Every state should get rid of them all and start over again. There should be no unions in public service. Never should a union be in a position to hold the people of each state a hostage.
By the way even if they had passed the $30 Billion Bill for another short fix it would still not have stopped thousands of state workers from being unemployed. If you read the article Calif would have gotten about $2 Billion. They are in the tank about $19 billion. New York was also looking at $2 billion, they are in the tank about $9 billion. I guess the rest of the states were going to be happy with about $240 million apiece?
The point is that for many there are jobs out there. You might have to take a pay cut, or you might have to switch to doing manual labor, or you might even have to see about moving but quit being an unfortunate one and move on.
The Illegal who work with fake social security number, do get taxes taken out. Their major problem is they can not file for returns, therefore the Government gets to keep the money.
Since they are being paid low wages the business benefits also. It's a win situation for the Government and a win situation for business's.

The way I read the article,Nelson voted with the Republicans and Byrd didn't vote..I would say the Democrats caused the bill to fail..41 votes minus Nelsons and Byrd's vote equals 39...So blame it on Nelson and Byrd,but that wouldn't fit the Democrats game plan...
This Bill was BS and the Republicans rightly so voted it down. If it was simply about extending unemployment, there would not have been money there for government employees. All government employees need to have their wages slashed like the rest of us! The private sector should no longer be expected to pay for the overpaid government employee.
Someone said the other day that anyone unemployed that is really on the street should be able to go to the Gulf and for a place to sleep and 3 meals a day they then help clean up the oil mess (I imagine most of it would be paid for by BP) but then the Unions would probably not like that since they wouldn't get a big slice of the pie. I know that doesn't pay for a house and that type of thing but at least you would have a bed and food. Beats having nothing......

Your sister ought to not be so greedy keeping all the profits for herself and pay a decent wage then. Unemployment is only $300 a week that works out to a paltry $7.50/hr. Factor in taxes and its a lot less than that. I haven't made $7.50 an hour since I was teenager decades ago. The only way one could live off of that is to resign themselves to a life a poverty.

If this bill were all about providing help for those who had lost their jobs and needed some more financial assistance for a little while longer it probably would have passed - it also would not have cost 30 billion either. Read the article again - what is a discrimination suit doing in here? There are numerous other tid bits hinted at as well. That is the biggest problem with most of what this administration has done wrong - first of all trying to do something before trying to do the right thing and really thinking through the consequences of their actions (see health care bill that we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg on - no one really yet even knows what that one holds, just like Pelosi said). They stuff all kinds of crap that costs millions of dollars into every decent bill. We cannot continue to spend willy-nilly as a response to every problem. Wow. You mean to tell me that if these same Republicans and their "Democratic" allies were in power during the Great Depression, FDR would not have been able to do what he did to give Americans jobs and build the US economy?

NOTE: A reminder to the Tea Party folks. The three sources of money are: Business, people and government. When the economy is so bad as it was during the Great Depression and as it is now, businesses and people don't have money to spend. That's when goverment steps in to help until business and people can spend enough money and the goverment get back its investment when more taxes are paid during a healthy economy.

GregL-671049... your post shows you don't know how the process works. First, Byrds not voting has no effect on the 41 who voted no, his voted is not counted either way because it doesn't exist. Secondly, for it to pass, it needed 60 votes. Using your logic, if Nelson had voted yes, and Byrd had voted(and voted yes), they still would have been one vote short.
It might be wise to see what types of Earmarks were attached before going wild here. The Dem's, ( Reid, Pelosi) are WELL noted for placing MILLIONS upon MILLIONS of Dollars of earmarks into Vital legislation, hoping the Rep's would pass it. This is NOT politics as usual, it is the Republican party trying to put a stop to the Economic rape of the Treasury by the Democrat party. I do not want, in any way, to be thought of as "Happy" the bill failed. This Bill HAS to pass, millions depend on the money, but, until the bill excludes any and all amendments/attachments by BOTH parties, it should fail just so the Public can see the way the elected lowlifes do business.
Remember this at Election time, OK? When the incumbent candidate states that "If elected/re-elected, I will work for and bring Jobs to America, I will defeat legislation allowing Illegal immigration, I will vote for...( YOU fill it in.) We are 13 Trillion in debt. Dems want to add 30 billion to that debt to pay off deadbeats that refuse to work after collecting a free check from the gubberment for 99 weeks.

Crimson – that the powers in Congress do not understand that there not but few jobs that pay a livable wage that is substantially above the poverty level is completely lost on these State and especially Congressional Representatives.
These representatives must really be in some sort of physical and mental comfort zone to not be appear that people have to pay for food, utilities, autos, gasoline and so forth, lets not even discuss health insurance and out of pocket health bills.
We scuttled other measures to pay for this extension of unemployment aid but "The Party of NO" and the DINOS could not find it in their cold hearts due to the total lack of touch with the common plight of the working Americans is so immoral I cannot find the words to express my outrage. How many Billions to we waste on two wars that are going nowhere and the overblown government sector?
That the congress could not pass this legislation is beyond my rage to express how I feel about these traitorous flunkies that nest in those hallowed halls of congress.

The filibuster exists to ensure that the party in the majority (in this case, the democrats) doesn't just trample on and totally ignore the minority party. It is up to the majority party to govern in such a way that the minority party doesn't feel so excluded they resort to the filibuster.
If you look at this administration, as soon as Obama won, his message to republicans was, "I won, you lost, I will be calling the shots. So go to hell." THey excluded the republicans COMPLETELY from the healthcare process with the exclusion of buying off a couple liberal republicrats whose votes they needed. If the republicans are now filibustering and stopping the democrat juggernaut from steamrolling their agenda through, then it is because THEY have abused their power and governed without the wisdom to be even mildly inclusive.

For those of you who have lost their jobs, I have nothing left but sympathy. It's probably the worst thing next to losing a loved one. Unfortunately, Obama's job creation efforts have been a dismal failure. The only jobs created have been government jobs and the only jobs saved have been government jobs. They're great jobs, pay 160% of the average private sector jobs, have great benefits, rarely get cut, and you have SEIU working for you to keep the benefit and pay increases coming at the expense of all the rest of America. Private sector jobs are what most of the rest of us had. Obama is anti-business and thus anti-private sector. So no jobs for the rest of us. We're stuck with redistributing our wealth to the elite in government.
Let's look at that wealth redistribution thing. Obama got paid $385,000 in 2009 to be the President of the United States. But, his tax return showed his income as $5.6 million! Wow, talk about the benefits of being at the feed trough! So, let's redistribute his wealth. He gets to keep the $385,000 earned as president, but the rest goes into a fund to be used to extend unemployment benefits. Then, how about Nancy Pelosi, she and her husband are multimillionaires. They get to keep $300,000 and the rest goes into the fund to extend unemployment benefits. Just work you way through both houses of Congress, leave them their base pay, and the rest goes into the unemployment fund. Then start with the State governments in a similar fashion, and I bet pretty soon we would have a program that actually creates private sector jobs, cuts government jobs, is pro-business, is protective of our jobs, guts free trade, and gets people back to work. Just need the right carrot and the big stick that goes with it!

If the vote was just about unemployment extensions, it would have been passed. However, the additional money for the states is why no republicans voted for it.
With all the extra unspent money from the stimulus, the democrats should just allocate some of that money to the states.
unemployment is not an entitilement, you have to pay into it when you work, you get paid according to what you earn, it was created so that a person who had a decent job doesn't have to work at mc donalds, for one thing if you get any job you can find while you're looking for a real job you're screwed, because if you have to go to interviews, you have to miss work to do so and guess what happens if you miss work, two things you either get short paid for the day or you get fired. Unemployment is there so you have the time to find a good job and also to stimulate the economy because when a person gets a check what do they do they buy food or supplies it helps to stimulate the economy and keep people from becoming homeless.
millerz, they can rescind the tax cut for the wealthiest and scale back these wars like pronto. They can cut the fancy stuff out for the next year or two for 545 politicians, and maybe roll back some of those pay raises. Then they can cut the subsidies to oil, insurance, the mega-farms and the next 20 highest subsidized industries in the country.
Partnership income shouldn't be sheltered and called a dividend where no taxes are paid on it - especially after the hue and cry about 47% of people supposedly not paying taxes. Cut some exemptions for some of those expense accounts, corporate auto fleets, cadillac health care plans, and get those taxes. After all the exemptions, credits, deductions, and carry forward/backward rules, these rich people don't pay as much in taxes as they would like everyone to believe. The marginal rate is NOT what they end up paying. It's a starting point to cut back from.
No doubt there are other huge expenditures or tax breaks, but I don't know enough about them to list them.
In other words, it shouldn't be the most financially vulnerable people in this society always taking the hits. What about CEOs of corporations that were bailed out? Is all the bail out money paid back? If not, why not? If it was lent to banks to lend to people and businesses, in order to jump start this economy, and that didn't happen, then take the bail-out money back and make sure it gets to where it was supposed to go in the first place. If those bailed out have to shut down, well, they can join the millions of unemployed who are about to be homeless or have to resort to welfare to live.
This all started in the Bush administration with the tax cut for the wealthy - which was NOT PAID FOR. Start there.
Oh, and for those who are working, corporations paying a living wage would go a long way toward collecting taxes from more people.

It's so crazy for people in poor states or states with high unemployment to think that the GOP is going to help anybody but themselves and the rich. In my state, in my residential community, a company bought land at the base of the small mountain we live on, and has applied to begin strip mining. The operation threatens the water supply for the whole community, not just to pollute the water, but to potentially destroy the well that provides all of the water. Nobody in the state government is lifting a finger to stop it, despite thousands of people and families begging to keep their water, and their historic town from the air pollution and noise. Why? Because these people always vote in Republicans, and the GOP puts industry profits over people and the environment. You can't keep doing the same thing and expect different results. I agree with hampster. I am unemployed and looking everyday. First of all there are no jobs like there used to be and second of all if you are over 50 it is twice as hard. I just lost a job to a 30 year old with less experience and I was rated number 1 on all the interviews-is that fair!!! I hope you guys are never unemployed and have to go through this. I am very blessed that I have a family that is looking out for me but there are other people that are living in tent cities here in the United States due to unemployment. And I have seen unemployed people living in their cars. So before you start saying unemployed people are lazy talk to one living in a homeless shelter or in their car. You could be there one day too.

you wanna know the truth about unemployment and news from someone who works close..when you see a news story about unemployment claims going down.. it means that benefits have run out (i.e the extensions) and people have stopped filing.. not because jobs have been created or the census has been started again... The extensions have been frozen since 05/29/10.. with the 4th ext (the state ones) exhausted as of 06-05-10. Next month you are sure as hell gonna see a newstory about claims dropping again.. good news!!!

I have had callers tell me they are not taking a job because they are used to getting paid 21 dollars an hour.. but this was only offereing 19 an hour. Maybe the media isn't telling the entire story. We're heard some wild spins on the Economy and now they are not saying what all that 30B was going to cover. How much of it was for pork projects? Where did they intend to come up with this money?
There are loads of minimum wage jobs around. But the people on unemployment don't even apply for work. The biggest problem a lot of employers are having is finding people willing to work that aren't on drugs. The drug problems are getting worse and when they find out there's going to be a drug test they are conveniently not at work..
I find it very telling that the government refuses to pass a budget. Why? Because they don't want us to know how much they are sinking this country into further debt and who voted to approve that expense. Someone needs to put a plug in the spending and just where do you do that that won't be found fault with? I would bet that this Jobs Bill was no better than any other that the government has pass and they have only spent half of the TARP and are holding on to it to pay for votes they need and push their candidates in the next elections and 2012. Unfortunately, it is a political trick to attach a grossly over funded bill like this to something that no one wants to see turned down and this time it was an unemployment extension. How convenient for the Dems that they can now point their fingers at those terrible Republicans for not voting for the Jobs Bill.......... Instead of trying to bundle these things together they should be forced to vote on each one separately and that is what will happen with the unemployment extension...it will be forced to come up for a separate vote without the Jobs Bill which would no doubt mean even higher taxes for the working citizens.

All that is holding this up is for the sponsor to pay for it. The reason thousands of state employees are losing their jobs is because states aren't collecting as much in taxes. 30 of 50 states are in that problem - what problem does taking money from the federal treasury solve? The states aren't going to have the money next year either, or the next year....
The stimulus and other deficit spending programs haven't added 40,000 jobs in the private sector at a deficit cost of $2+ TRILLION over the last 18 months. If the plans aren't working it's time for a new plan, end the failed programs and redirect the money. Congress can do that.

toastee, I have rarely seen so much BS in one post. Unemployed people turning down 19 dollar an hour job so they can keep getting that 300 dollars a week. Lets see, I'm unemployed and I would rather sit on my ass for 300 dolllars or work for 760. Do you really think this is what is happening. My son was laid off in November 2009, his unemployment paid him 250 dollars a week, he just found a job that pays 8 dollars an hour and he feels very lucky.
The reason they tacked on the aid to the states is because the states are broke. I guess when the states do not recieve the aide they can just start laying off people to, that should make the economy better. I hate to tell you people but the statistics show that there are 6 unemployed people for every job opening in this country. So I guess in your selfesh mind those five other people who don't get the job are just out of luck.
The current economy is the result of 30 years of supply side (trickle down) economics, horrible free trade policies and financial deregulation. All of these policies were enthusiastically supported by the Republican party.
If giving tax breaks to the wealthy and getting out of the way of the private sector (deregulation) actually worked we should be swimming in jobs by now.

The media is consciously confusing the public about the priorities of the public as revealed by polls and also about the negative effect on employment numbers that would result from cutting the federal budget. Republicans and conservative Democrats in Congress like to argue that public concern over federal budget deficits makes it impossible to pass a new round of job-creating stimulus spending. And corporate media like to echo these sentiments, despite there being little evidence that citizens are as concerned about these issues as inside-the-Beltway deficit hawks.
In the June 21 New York Times, John Harwood wrote, "The same polls that show voters upset about joblessness also show them upset about deficit spending, which Democratic leaders consider their only short-term method of reducing joblessness."
The Washington Post (6/19/10) put the same narrative on its front page under the headline, "Election-Year Deficit Fears Stall Obama Stimulus Plan." Reporter Lori Montgomery acknowledged that many economists see a greater threat looming if the government doesn't provide additional stimulus. But, she countered, "a competing threat--the exploding federal budget deficit--seems to be resonating more powerfully in Congress and among voters." The piece went on to note that the first stimulus package does not appear to poll very well, and that voters "are sending mixed signals about whether Washington should spend more on jobs or start minding the national debt."
But most recent polls show far more public concern over unemployment than deficit spending or the federal debt. As FAIR noted (FAIR Blog, 5/19/10), recent surveys from CBS/New York Times and NBC/Wall Street Journal asked voters to rank problems facing the country. Unemployment was more important by a spread of 49 percent to 5 percent in the CBS/NYT poll, 35 percent to 20 percent in the NBC/WSJ survey, and 47 percent to 15 percent from a recent Fox poll. Blogger Ben Somberg raised similar questions (6/19/10) in response to the Post story.
And with all the media hysteria over federal spending and the deficit, the public seems to have a somewhat muddled view of why it's even an issue. A recent Pew/National Journal survey (6/17-20/10) that found 74 percent of respondents believed that--contrary to what most economists would tell you--"budget cuts to reduce the federal deficit" would help create jobs. The same poll found similarly wide majorities seeing job creation from additional spending on public works programs, more aid to state and local governments, and cutting business and income taxes--all policies that would increase the deficit. Surveys in which the public ranks these conflicting priorities consistently give the deficit little emphasis.
So when the Post begins a May 19 story, "With voters up in arms over the mounting federal debt," where is the evidence for that characterization? Or for Times writer Matt Bai's suggestion (6/17/10) that "the federal deficit has emerged as a chief concern for voters"? Or when the Times reported (6/18/10) that the Senate's failure to pass a spending bill was evidence that lawmakers "reacting to rising public concern, have grown reluctant to vote for measures that add to federal red ink."
The evidence certainly isn't in the polls. One recent Gallup survey (6/17/10), for example, found that 60 percent of the public approved of "additional government spending to create jobs and stimulate the economy." One of the few polls to ask people to choose between jobs and the deficit directly (CBS/NYT, 4/5-12/10) found 50 percent agreeing that "the federal government should spend money to create jobs, even if it means increasing the budget deficit," with 42 percent choosing deficit-reduction over job-creating stimulus.
If such polls were taken seriously, news reports would state that politicians were bucking public opinion in order to pursue fiscal austerity. But outlets like the New York Times and the Washington Post have turned reality on its head.

big business has bought all of us, hook, line and sinker. they WANT us to be forced to go out and take nothing but minimum wage jobs. pretty soon, only a small elite will be working for anything but minimum wages and the rest of us will be nothing better than a bunch of endenured slaves to corporate america. they want to break the unions because unions hold them to certain standards of wages and behavior that they don't want to live by. businesses want to do whatever they want to their employees without recourse. they want to cut back everyone's income to the level they pay people in third world countries. believe me, they are playing a mind game with us and half you people out there don't get it. if we all run and grab those minimum wage jobs, pretty soon we'll be convinced that we're lucky to have them. meanwhile, the ceos and executives of the companies we work for will continue to take home their millions of dollars in personal income every year. if they break the unions, then there won't be any stopping them from going back to the 'good 'ol days' when your boss could make you work for 12, 15, 18 hrs a day and not pay you anything extra. when your boss could fire you because he was in a bad mood that day. he could lock you in a room and rape you and you could do nothing about it, because it would be your word against his. if you got hurt on the job, you'd get fired, not help. this is the way it was before unions. when you speak out against unions, you speak out against yourselves. the only reason unions are not able to do more for the common worker is because since the 70's and Regan's trickle down economics, more and more power is going to the big businesses and they are using that power and money to paint a picture of unions as the bad guy. i hate to tell you this, but most unions workers do NOT make millions of dollars and have the world at their feet. i worked in a union job for 26 years and i made enough money to live on. i wasn't out buying bmws or living in a mansion. i retired and took my pension with me and two years later the company froze its employees pensions. they blamed the economy but the ceo of that company took home over $15 million dollars in personal income the same year. now, tell me that's the fault of the unions. i now work for another large corporation and although i've been there for three years and do exemplary work(not my assessment, that of my boss) i can't get hired full time. the corporation won't hire full time employees anymore. why should they? corporate america has us so desperate for work that they can afford to hire more people at lower pay and since we're part time, we don't get the benefits of full time workers nor do we get the perks. we get screwed. well, welcome to the jungle, people. corporate america wants a workforce of part time employees at minimum wage, with no benefits, no pensions, no health care. and they gather all that money and ship it off to the cayman islands or switzerland. and you'll have the republicans, mainly, but also democrats who are in bed with big business to thank. maybe if the republicans would work with the president instead of against him, we would have jobs, but they do everything they can to stop any kind of movement forward. obama wants to offer jobs repairing the infrastructure of this country, but congress won't pay for it or give money to the states to do so. even so, a lot of the stimulus money has gone to the states and the same republican governors who dissed the president and his stimulus excepted the money and then tried to take credit for it. i know, because i actually read the news (and not just watch fox or msnbc). every day, i read in the local newpapers about jobs being offered for construction around california. in the last year i've seen more street work being done just around my city than i have seen in the ten years before.
i agree that people need to lower their standards a little when looking for a job. you may not get a job in the same industry as you were in before, but some work is better than none. but, if you have a family to support, working at mcdonald's is just like not working at all. my family is grown so i don't support my kids, but i take care of my mother who is disabled. without her medicare and social security she'd be dead( she's been disable since she was 19. she's 83). so, i guess you might understand why i'm in favor of keeping those services.

There's just one huge problem with your remedy. Private business don't give a damn about you and they sure as hell don't give a damn about America. There is blood in the water and corporations can smell it. They love it that unemployment is so high and are doing every thing to keep it that way forever. This allows them to keep wages artificially low and even cut existing wages dramatically and increase their profits. Pilots making a measly $10/hr the same as school bus drivers? Are you effing kidding me! See, there is a culture of greed which has taken over corporate America and it cannot be stopped ever. It's like a cancer. It was given life by the Bush Administration with all their deregulation. Now it has grown so big that it cannot be stopped the end result being the destruction of the country.
Ever notice how there is a fee for everything now? All those fees out there are really the culture of greed (cancer) in action. I'm old enough to remember when there was no such thing as a fee. Now there is a $30 fee just to change your home phone number. And for what? To do so requires hardly no work form the phone company. What, type 6 or 7 characters to change a cross-connect in a switch justifies them gouging thirty dollars out of the consumer? I'll bet you thought there was some real work involved just like they told you. When ever Americans see the word FEE, alarm bells ought to be going off inside telling them that the fee actually means free money for the company/person imposing the fee. My wife (who has paid into the system for 25 years) lost her job the day before Thanksgiving last. She has been working as a Temp off and on as jobs ebb and flow, while looking for a full time job. I have been trying my best to cover everything on my meager earnings for that long. Two weeks ago her unemployment statement said she was to be "automatically renewed" if she has not found a job by then. When she made her weekly call on Thursday morning she was advised that next week (thanks to the stall in the Senate) she gets $52 and that is the end of her benefits.
I drive for a living. The motor blew in my car about two weeks ago. I have been unable to do my job since. Her unemployment check has been our sole source of income since that time due to circumstances.
I have paid into the system for over 30 years and never asked for a goddamned penny.
Technically I still have a job (just no way to perform it) which makes me ineligible for unemployment benefits. The Dims put all that union pork sh!t in the bill so the Republicans went on principle and shot it down.
BUT WE WILL HAVE NO WAY TO FEED OUR THREE CHILDREN AS OF THE COMING WEEK. OUR RENT IS COMING UP IN A MATTER OF DAYS. WE WON'T HAVE IT. WE ARE FACING EVICTION BECAUSE OF BOTH PARTIES. Crimson – that the powers in Congress do not understand that there not but few jobs that pay a livable wage that is substantially above the poverty level is completely lost on these State and especially Congressional Representatives.
We scuttled other measures to pay for this extension of unemployment aid but "The Party of NO" and the DINOS could not find it in their cold hearts due to the total lack of touch with the common plight of the working Americans is so immoral I cannot find the words to express my outrage. How many Billions to we waste on two wars that are going nowhere and the overblown government sector?
That the congress could not pass this legislation is beyond my rage to express how I feel about these traitorous flunkies that nest in those hallowed halls of congress.

I apologize for not answering sooner, family issues.
First of all, taking a page from the real first black president, Bill Clinton,,,"I feel your pain".
I have 3 family members who have been out of work for over 18 months, with children also. I also have a relative in Louisiana who is already on the brink of losing his business of 24 years. Our family has been helping all of them along with their UE benefits and they are holding together. I understand what you are going through. I wish there was some way I could help. I DO believe that Americans deserve their benefits and as my post stated I support giving the unemployed their benefits but I DO NOT support adding another round of useless earmarks pretending to be $timulu$ that are given to cronies and abused instead of going to the American people.
Contrary to what many may think I WAS a Democrat (shudderrrrr) at one time in my life. I was raised in Detroit by two card carrying union parents (GM and Ford) and I understand the mentality. I left the party when I was working part time at Ford to pay for college. My parents subsequently left the party also in the late 70's. The Democratic party has changed incredibly since then and I have been in the private sector business world AND the public sector in government agencies. I have seen horrors that were supported by our government that never even broke the back page of the Classifieds as news.
Since that time, and what I have learned from various "other" agencies, I have become an Independent and have never voted a party-line since. I am Right leaning simply because of what the Left has and continues to become. Most Americans would be horrified by what I know as far as the "politics" of certain agencies have become because of the Liberal Progressive agenda. I can say that a certain TV and radio host is as close to the truth as I have seen without "censure" over the past few years. Unfortunately most Americans don't know, or I should say are AFRAID to know, the truth about that party. The social justice being flaunted is very compelling and shows the gullibility of many Americans over the past few decades.
Your situation is difficult and I understand. I can assure you the benefits will be extended and you will do OK. I wish I could help you more but as I mentioned I have cash and hope strapped family of our own. I would recommend you continue your Faith in family and country. We still are the greatest nation on the planet. With the awareness of the public to what is truly going on in government none of our spineless politicians will allow any more harm to our citizens. If it gets to that point the scenarios we see in Greece will pale in comparison with what will happen here and abroad.
I know these are just words but I think you are strong enough and courageous enough to do whatever is necessary to provide for your family. After all, if there is no family there truly is no nation.
No this is another bill to pay off democrat governors that have run their respective states into the ground. If the democrats wanted to really help the little people they would use the money from their already passed stimulus bill that has not created any jobs at all just fabricated jobs saved. The stimulus bill was just the biggest pork bill ever written.
Look up all the ribbon cutting by republican senators this year with stimulus money, do research on it.
The ribbon cutting is done because some stupid politician gave a useless grant and the representative from the government is expected to be there and celebrate. If a Republican politician decided to stay away from a ribbon cutting you'd crucify him for that too, saying he doesn't care about the people.

Can't we put these people to work in Green Jobs, making wind turbine generators and solar panels? Obama says he wants to start us on the path to energy indepdendence with the same degree of effort this counry put out when we built thousands of tanks, planes and ships. Seems like it would be a good time to start now, especially with so many people out of work. We can't just let these people flounder in this jobless economy. Some might say we don't have money to pay these people. Well, we send 400 Billion overseas to countries that hate us to pay for oil. I would rather give that money to our own people than to people that hate us. Seems to me if we produced our own energy here, that money would instead go to us. We need to start with people living in the Gulf. First Green Jobs need to go there first. Their livlihoods as fishermen don't exist anymore.
Solar panels are expensive. We could make them cheaper if we instead of giving money to people who are unemployed, we instead used that money to offset the cost of the solar panels these same unemployed people, now employed would make by working making solar panels. Those solar panels could then be bought by consumers for a much cheaper price they can afford and then we would put them on the roofs of houses thereby reducing foreign imports of oil. Once the solar panel business gets rolling, the price of them would come down even further. Now as I understand this unemployment bill is for 16 Billion dollars. Here is the deal: Use that 16 Billion dollars instead to offset the cost of solar panels. Solar panels would be so cheap, people would be fools not to buy them.
I agree with you wholeheartedly. It's time for the new direction to begin. The manufacture of hydrogen feuled vehicles and the intrastructure needed to service them would bring millions of jobs to this country. To hell with electric cars. Our grid has rolling blackouts from what we now use so think of what it will be like adding a few million cars to the grid everyday.
All we neeed to do is invest in these alternative energy sources. If we put half the money from war into these projects, we would have a cleaner country and a healthier environment for everyone. Bring on the jobs ...it's time to get off our azzes and make this country survive.
Yeah, I think we need a middle ground here. Some people say to hell with these lazy people! Make them work! And some people say, hey, have some compassion. How about something in the middle making both sides happy? We still give them the money, but we make em work! I think they want to work anyway. On your idea with hydrogen, there is a problem with it. It sounded great at first. The problem is in distribution. The hydrogen molecule is tiny and the slightest opening in piping, that stuff easily escapes. It is almost impossible to transport by pipeline or by tanker trucks. It leaks like a sieve. And it is highly explosive! We already have problems with explosions with natural gas. Hydrogen is much much much worse to deal with. Maybe it could be worked out, but I doubt it.
It's time to have compassion for unemployed people and welfare recipients.
It's time to replace income taxes with income limits.
And...
Let employed people keep 5 or 10% of what they earn.

Arnold is not a republican. He is a democrat in sheep's clothing. And if you do look a the stimulus(pork bill) 2/3 of the bill went to democrat districts. The 1/3 went to republican districts probably by accident. The democrats could have passed just an extension to unemployment benefits by its self but wanted to add a bailout for public sector unions in run down democratic states.

The opposition to this bill came from both Democrats and Republicans. They wanted to vote for it. But the Democrats refused to pay for it. Average people prioritize how they spend money but Democrats think they can just borrow more and never cut anything. If we need to continue unemployment payments for two years, then we need to find a way to pay for it.
Democrats passed "pay-go" saying they cared about who the government spends money but then passed everything as an emergency so they didn't have to pay for anything.

How is giving unemployment benefits creating jobs as the senator stated. Our staffing company heres it all the time from people we call with jobs we have available that I am going to stay on unemployment and enjoy the summer. What we are seeing is with their unemployment benefits about to run out that these people decide to start looking for work. We are a small staffing firm but have over 120 job openings for welders and machinists and it is difficult to find people to fill them. Too many individuals are getting used to and expecting the government to take care of them.

If you knew anything about unemployment insurance you would know that your statement was wrong. The employee pays zero, nada, zilch in unemployment. That is a tax that is put on the employer by the State to cover people when they become unemployed through no fault of their own. You pay not one dime into that fund. When the State has a high unempolyment rate for extended lengths of time and those funds run out they draw funds from other agencies and programs to put in effect what is called Emergency UI benifits. If the crisis continues and those funds run out, they then go to the Federal Government for special funding to extend it. All of these UI benefits come from two sources either the employers or the Feds. The Feds do not have a Unemployment Insurance program therefore they have to borrow the money to help the states out.
You told Greg to shut up. Why? Because everything he said is factual and can be backed up with facts. And you may as well blame your party because they have continually voted to give those funds regarding the wars you talk about. It hasnt just been republicans doing it.

The only thing GOP doesn't like is the tax hikes on oil comp. looters and thieves, and their economy crashing hedge fund managers. Increase tax on investment brokers, hurts the average person that has a 401 or IRA as the additional tax WILL be passed to the people using the investment broker, not just the "rich". And the biggest heart tug, would save thousands of state and local government jobs (read also fed jobs). I think that this Great Recession has broken some of the rules for normal unemployment benefit lengths. However at some point there needs to be a different answer than continue to spend money we don't have! Most of the government sector has been immune to the recession and that's simply wrong with the exception of the military where we should be expanding jobs and eliminating money pissed down a hole to KBR and other PRIVATE CONTRACTORS for functions the military is or should be capable of providing! Government should be reducing the size of departments and especially overlap where more than one department does the same function!! That's bad enough in normal times, but in the Great Recession, it's asinine!!

Let the primaries be a lesson to show you what will happen at election time. You work for us the people. As I posted above, studies have consistently shown that most unemployed don't get serious about getting a job (other than a "dream job") as long as they draw benefits. The rate of unemployment drops considerably after benefits end.

Earlier this year, Congress approved up to 99 weeks of unemployment benefits backed by the federal government — an addition of 73 weeks to the traditional 26 offered by the states. Congress is trying to increase the extension beyond 99 weeks. Obviously, 2 years is 104 weeks, so that is where they are headed.
I empathize with the unemployed because I have been there. It was a bad time so I started a small business (me) and beat the bushes to get work. I did some jobs that some would say were "beneath me", but it paid off.
For all of you true believers who think that being on umemployment is:
1. some kind of extended vacation and enjoyable
2. nirvana and enjoyable
3. intentional and enjoyable
Tell me when and where I should show up to take your job so that you can begin your new grand life style. It just infuriates me to no end to listen to all of you who believe all you need to do is go out and find a job. I was unemployed/underemployed in Michigan for 1.5 years. I recently started a new job. There were 800 resumes for 2 positions. I hit the lottery.
It was a miserable climb back to normalacy.

Some of you posters seem to think this is for more than 99 weeks of unemployment. The bill was just to continue the current extended benefits till the end of the year for people that didn't get 99 weeks.
For example, I lost my job last December and just ran out of unemployment insurance with the standard 26 weeks only. I won't get ANY extended benefits that others got. The small amount of unemployment I was getting was also the only way I could keep my COBRA health insurance. So that's gonna have to stop too.
I've worked continuously for 30 years and never collected a single dime of unemployment until now.
Really, when i received my 276 per week in unemployment I was even more frantic to find a job. God get me off this stuff. Couldn't find a reason to let that drag on too long. I came to realize if this was all there was desperation to get a job set in really quickly.

The thing about the unemployed drawing benefits is this: they did have a job and they were working before being laid off. The import of this is that they had paid into the system and were eligible for unemployed benefits. I live in Texas where the recession has had a minor impact when compared to states like Michigan and California. The company I work for has laid off 150 employees dropping our total to 850. Another 150 are scheduled as well in the next 6 months. The industry I work for is in dire straits (mainly due to globalization). This is while the corporate executives are being paid millions in bonuses as well as millions in severance packages (golden parachutes).
Over the past 6 months, I have been offered 6 jobs - only to have each position to dry up and disappear. All were a pay cut ranging from 15%-40%.
I am very sympathetic for those who are seeking jobs but are unable to find one.
Those who claim it is so easy finding a job have been extremely lucky and need to consider that before commenting.
Moving is a serious financial committment - especially from California, Nevada, Arizona, Florida - where home values have plummetted.
Good luck to those of you who are unemployed and seeking employement.

I worked 12 years in a very tough print-room production job and quit my job 2 years ago- Since I quit, I could not colect any un-employment benefits even though I paid into the system, but I would never deny those benefits from other hard workers that lose their job through no fault of their own.

The GOP wants to apologize to the oil companies for having them pay for their oil spill damage, and they want to deny hard workers their benefits when they lose their jobs because the economy went down the garbage chute, jobs that were lost with the deregulation by the GOP of the banking industry (whom they also bailed out with billions of our taxpayer money).

we americans are more powerful than we give ourselves credit for. we can force big business to bend to our will and not the other way around. if you want banks to stop ripping you off, go join a credit union. they're all over the place. credit unions are smaller, so you get more personalized care and you don't get screwed. i've been with a credit union for 30 years and i'd put my money in a mattress before i would go back to a bank. if you know some company just moved its workforce overseas, then stop buying their products! i do that. i'm careful about what i buy and from whom. i do whatever i can to support small local businesses even if that means spending a little extra money. but, i'm just one person. imagine if everyone in the country boycotted i don't know, let's say BP. it might take some doing to make sure you weren't buying their products, but it could be done. to be honest they're such a large company all over the world, it wouldn't break them, but it sure as heck wouldn't help them and who knows it might catch on. we could rally against large companies that lay off workers. we could demand that our congress force these companies to pay for their laid off workers to be retrained for other jobs, unless they could prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that they couldn't afford it. that means their ceos and executives would have to forgo their bonuses, golden parachutes and obscene incomes. what shame that would be.

I now what you are saying Texas Lady laid of in December 2008 just before XMAS, been looking and sending resumes everywhere even places that I am not totally qualified for hoping they can look over that and put me to work, I am 56 and still able to work well but no one wants to take the chance. Coming up with BS of being over/ under qualified or down right will not give me a reason. The whole thing is a mess and I say the government broke it they should fix it. I was just denied my first extension because they will have to wait to get more money from Feds and now reading this looks like it will be awhile longer before anything happens real bummer, jobs are scarse in my line of work but I apply to everyone that I can find even the 16.00 dollar jobs oh well at least it is a job. Out of all the resumes I have sent out I have had 3 interviews and no offers of a job, I think even they are not supposed to do it they are discrimanating thinking us older people can not do the work. Love to be a fly on the wall after I leave the interview just to hear what they are saying. The whole situation is not good. The Government needs to wake up and fix the problem quickly or there will be another rush of foreclosures coming very soon!!!!

This is how unemployment payments work...your EMPLOYER pays the benefit for the first $7000 of your income which works out to around $52/year/employee. Your EMPLOYER, not YOU, pays into the system. That is why you get benefits when you are let go and not when you quit. So you are not "getting back what you paid in" because you did not pay anything. The insurance, like all insurance, has a set number of months or a set amount of money (based on your pay). When that set number or amount is met, insurance that was bought is no longer paying it, that is why the extentions are being paid for with borrowed money.
I am not saying that the extensions shouldn't happen as my husband was on unemployment for 6 months before thankfully finding a job. What I am saying is the extensions need to be funded without putting our country more in debt. What happended to all of the stimulus money? What was stimulated if we are still have to come up with borrowed money to pay for unemployment extensions?
My uncle has been collecting un-employment for over a year now. I don't think he has any plan of going back to work because he is vacationing around the country.

The marjority of economic experts have said repeatedly that we need to continue stimulous programs -- even at the risk of adding to the debt -- to keep us from double-dipping. I was out of work for 19 months -- unemployment compensation was an absolute lifeline! I didn't sit on my butt, gamble, or do anything else but look for work. Yes, there are those who abuse the system -- and there will always be those jerks -- but most want to work but can't get hired. For me... college degree, 30 years in management positions, yet I couldn't get a job at McDonalds because I didn't have any 'food service' experience (translation: too old and over qualified).
Are these the same "experts" that told us the stimulus would keep unemployment below 8%?

Those experts said the stimulus would work and create or save millions of jobs. Obviously that isn't working for you. So take a look at the money spent lets just round it off at about $800 Billion. When the stimulus was passed there were approx 14 million Americans put out of work. If those same economists had been smart they would have screamed at the President to invest half the money into a fund for the creation of small businesses and the other half into an unemployment fund. The small business fund could have been used to start about 200,000 small businesses if each needed $2 mil a piece for startups. Put a requirement that to get the money that the enterpreunur would have to put 10-15 people to work. Bam 2-3 million people back in a real job. Give that same enteprenuer incentives for hiring more and keeping them on for a year. Give that same person more incentives and tax credits the second year that he maintains or increases employment.
The other $400 billion could have been placed in an unemployment fund. With that money the 14 million unemployed could have drawn $300 a week for two years even if the fund wasn't drawing interest. The idiots in charge wasted money on short term jobs and making sure public service union workers could keep their jobs. They spent barely anything to help create long term or sustainable jobs.

Out of the 3/4 Trillion spent on the "stimula$$" I can cite TWO examples (CARS or "Cash for Clunkers" and the similar appliance program) where money was spent with a specific goal THAT IT MET. I may have had a couple of issues with the implementation of them but compared to the other $740+ billion spent it was wise useage of the Stimula$$ and money well spent because it helped save jobs! I have worked steady for over 40 years, got laid off just before (added a real "humbug" to my Xmas spirit). I have never drawn a cent from unemployment or disability ever then I get turned down for my first extension, not second or third my first extension. I have been looking for work daily and every job that I am remotely qualified I get a resume to them immediately, I am over 50 and out of those hundred or so resumes sent out over the last 7 months I have had 3 interviews that is all and no job offers. The Government broke it they should fix it open up the purse strings on unemployment and quit playing all those stupid political games this bill should have been a separate bill not combined with anything else, passed, then get on with fixing the country that they broke. I see another wave of forclosures in the horizen if they don't.

We the people have to take responsibility for the conditions of government. We have elected and re-elected public officials not by their ability and credentials but by their party affiliation, their stage presents, their ethnicity, and who knows what else. We deserve the monster we have created. We don't have to look any further than the closest mirror to find the enemy for it is us. The only way out of this mess is to agree to become knowledgeable about all election candidates and vote for the ones that actually have the experience and ability as well as integrity to do the job. In other words, the best qualified. It is really self destructive to vote for a poorly qualified candidate of one particular party over a much better qualified candidate of another party based only on party affiliation. People who didn't prepare or live within their means will lose their prized possessions resulting in them being sold to others who buy them for money and by increasing the supply lowers the cost for everyone else thereby saving them money that they can spend on other things. It's called returning to affordability and we need it far more than we need to keep bailing people out. Not to mention the upcoming tax increases may be slightly less bad... again giving people who earn their money more of it to spend. That is how money will be spent. Handouts only keep the prices and taxes high resulting in less disposable income for all.

It is all the other stuff the Dems tacked onto it. The big payoffs to SEIU to make sure no government union workers get laid off. The new pork barrell jobs programs to pay off their political buddies. The $30 billion in additional deficit spending this adds to the national debt. They could take the money from last years' stimulus which only 50% of the $787 billion has been spent and has created very few jobs. They would rather spend the money on university surveys and 100 more windmills than use it for the unemployed. You know those "shovel ready" jobs that never seem to appear

Instead I've seen posts blaming the Democrats in Congress or the Democratic Governors, etc. These people will not be able to put food on the table! Politics have no place in this tragedy. We were headed for a depression. If that had happened, I wonder how those fortunate to have a job now would have felt if their only lifeline had be severed? Listen to some of the comments: Lets have everyone applying for unemployment benefits take a drug test; don't give benefits because like an animal if you feed them they will continue to come back for more; the unemployed are lazy; move to another state to find a job; they don't want to work. What kind of idiots have we representing us. I have not heard of one Senator agreeing to give up their salaries to reduce the deficit, and most of them are millionaries.
I have absolutely no problem extending job benefits, which only makes up $8.7-10 billion of this bill.
I do have a problem with the additional spending attached to this bill. Such as the Medicare Fix, which was not tallied into the HCR bill to purposely deceive people into thinking it would cost less.
I also have an issue with the Fed Government earmarking $3 billion to California and New York, when their own citizens refuse to accept responsibility for their own petard.
This bill is actually called the Tax Extender Bill, not the jobless benefits bill as the media portrays.
Over 60% of the money in this goes to other projects not unemployment benefits.
Democratic Governers are not the only ones in trouble from the Bush recession. We must find the funds to help our states as well as the unemployed. We spend trillions overseas for who knows what, while we short change the average taxpayer on a daily basis. For this country to become strong again we must start taking care of America first because we can't solve the world's problems by using hard earned taxpayers dollars on the butt holes overseas.

Why do we need a 1 billion dollar program for summer jobs for the youth? Maybe that money should go towards jobs for adult unemployed. This bill is loaded with pork and wasteful spending. If they want to pass it, pass each item as an individual vote and, in the bill, specify where the money will come from to cover the expenditure.
Now, as to the Dr. Fix bill, I have ZERO sympathy for that and hope the Republicans block it. The Dems purposely left it out of the healthcare reform bill so that the numbers would not be in red and over 1 trillion costs. They had their chance to pass that bill, but chose not to. Those aren't just any teenagers but disadvantaged teenagers. My local paper tells me so. My liberal rag tells me how important during these economic times that businesses that belong to "special" organizations that hire "disadvantaged" teens will have their salaries paid by our great state's federal stimulus money. Of course, they then suspect these same teens will help contribute to household expenses.
The only thing sadly funny here is that all these white kids on here never read the bills or do not comprehend when the words "minority, multicultural, disadvantaged communities" mean when it comes to the jobs/money of the future. Sometimes learning the govt has no interest in you beyond what you can do for them in the form of votes is a hard lesson learned.
Karen: The purpose of establishing summer youth jobs basically lies in the premise that "idle hands are the workshop of the devil." It hopefully places these kids in working environments in offices, parks, agricultural industries (not private farms), and other prospective work positions throughout the labor spectrum. I administered the program locally for about 18 years and will attest that, though there were inconsistensies, the enrollees had some work experience, received pay for it, and had money to buy school clothes, books, some fun stuff, etc. These young people were documented as being from disadvantaged families living in poverty. There's where some of the incosistensies fell--the their parents took charge of the children's paychecks when the young worker arrived home.
All we can hope for any more is that they're ashamed of themselves. They've made sure that they've insulated themselves from us (or rather protected themselves from us). I can assure you, if they were afraid of us, things would be much different!

If those people who did not get the jobs go back out and try again the next day for 25 other jobs and get those jobs, how many people are still unemployed? If the first 25 people who got the jobs (out of the 500) get laid off on the 3rd day because of company bankruptcy, now how many people are unemployed?
Now imagine that number of unemployed people multiplied by at least 1 million coming after you because they're hungry and they can't stand your smug-ass attitude anyway. How many people are you up against?

It would make sense that when the unemployement stops for a number of people that the unemployement rate would drop, while these people are no longer counted as unemployeed they are still not working! But look at it from the perspective of most of the Neo Cons who post to these forums, only Democrats are unemployed, because Republicans are too important to not have a job! Have a great day lArry! The Senate needs 60 votes to pass a bill. The House passes a bill with a simple majority, but the Senate need 3/4 of the vote to pass a bill. The Dems no longer have the "Super Majority" since Massachussetts elected a Republican (Brown) to fill Ted Kennedy's seat.

We can't continue to borrow our way to prosperity. Ninety nine weeks of unemployment are enough. Face it jobs aren't coming back any time soon. Time to either get jobs beneath your skills or apply for welfare, food stamps, AFDC, WIC, subsidized housing, and other safety net programs designed for people temporarily without work. Oh wait a minute, those programs are full right now with the chronically unemployed, multi-generational welfare cheats, anchor babies and their illegal alien parents, high school drop=outs, social misfits, you name it.
Because of this drain on the system the requirements for qualifying for these programs are so high you practically need to be without assets to get any benefits!
The government wastes billions of dollars each year in waste, fraud, and abuse of most programs it is in charge of. Throwing money we don't have at a problem doesn't solve it, it just makes it worse down the road.
Bottom line is the lifeboat which is the USA isn't big enough to support the entire world. Unless we make hard choices we are all going down.

1) pull out of the wars, save millions
2)boot out all illegals and anchor babies, save millions and free up millions of jobs so again save millions paying welfare.
3) Make all people on welfare/unemployment do community service, this will stop the ones who are sitting on welfare because they want to, they will prob decide if they have to work they might as well get a real job or if they dont at least grafitti is getting cleared up and litter is picked up etc
4) Stop allowing pregnancy on welfare, if you have children and then need welfare thats acceptable, if you are on welfare and get pregnant you lose your welfare.

It took clinton 5 years to eliminate deficit spending,fought tooth and nail by Newt and his cabal. To get out of THIS mess will require a rather SEVERE austerity program!! the congress denied itself the scheduled pay raise for 2010 and on May 14th Obama signed a bill sent to him by Congress to nix the pay raise scheduled for 2011.

i know from speaking with a friend in AL, wants to be a mechanic,says he cant find any mechanic jobs i did an online job search and found 30 in his immediate area, 85 in the state, 2000 in the country, then he says he needs $40 to take the test to get a qualification, can he borrow it = nope, can you get another job to earn the money = well walmart is hiring but i dont want to lower myself - well stay in your parents basement then, geez this is the mentality, articles on msnbc have quoted people saying 'i cant find anything in my field', i cant find anything for the same salary', 'i cant find anything in my area', well instead of being lazy be prepared to do something other than your preferred job, maybe take a pay cut and maybe move.

Your right, people being on unemployment for over a year is riduculous. Whose fault do you think that is? Some people simply are not able to find work making enough to pay their bills. So its a catch 22. They can take a job (if they can find one) making less money, and let the bank take their house, and/or file bankruptcy, or they can continue to collect UI for as long as they can, and continue to pay their creditors, until the economy turns around.
When people are forced into losing their homes and filing for bankruptcy because they had to take a minimum wage job after their UI ran out, Oh well tough for them, eeh? Guess their kids can live on pinto beans and sleep on the floor in their one bedroom apartment, if they can afford that.

The economy failed (because of the ineptitude and stupidity of our govt. and its blind eye to what Wall Street and the financial gurus were up to) and companies started displacing workers left, right and center in an attempt to save themselves. Then the companies went under creating further job losses. Since all of our other potential jobs have been shipped overseas in order to maximize big business profits (shareholders) what do you recommend? Move to India, Mexico or China? Why don't we all just leave America to the illegals then and go and live in their countries instead. That way, we can make a nickel a day and live in poverty without people calling us names and saying we are lazy.
Perhaps those of you who are telling those collecting unemployment to get a job aren't seeing what most of them are experiencing -- at least those who have been laid off over the course of the last 12 months. I agree there are those "deadbeats" there are in every crowd... just don't be so hasty to group everyone in the same category.
I have a job, thank goodness. However, my husband was laid off last July and after several hundreds of resumes sent (for all types of jobs above, below, and at his previous pay grade) he has had one interview and no offers. Most often, because there are now some employers who won't even consider someone who has been out of work for the past six months, he doesn't even get a call or a response. The others won't consider someone with more experience than their job requires, in fear that new hire will leave once the economy recovers.
Regardless of political party -- this country is fast becoming disgraceful. We'll provide aid to countries other than ours when the smallest of "disasters" happens, we'll bail out companies that couldn't succeed in business in any economy, but we continue to turn our backs on the people who built this country - who make the things that others consume.

Just a few months ago my advice would have been to move to the Southwest.. With the Oil & Gas industry my state has faired well during this horrific recession. My cousin runs several crews of pulpwood cutters here in North Georgia. If your husband actually wants a job, can handle a chainsaw, and speaks English, my cousin will hire him.The work is dangerous, but it pays well.
My brother in law is also looking for workers to pick cucumbers for pickling. He'll have some watermelon harvesting jobs available next month. And I typically need hay haul crews all summer, 5 cents a bale on the truck, typical crew member makes $110 a day if they hustle.
