The Muslim/Islamic religion has almost 2.7 billion followers. A very small percentage are Radical Extremists.

I'm sure the Muslim people in this country would like to practice their religion in peace without people being intolerant toward their views. The separation of church and state was never intended to keep Pastors, Priests, Rabbis and Imans from speaking about the goverment or endorsing candidates at the risk of losing their non-profit status. It was never intended to keep prayer out of schools. It's sole intention was to allow anyone to worship freely to whomever they wanted without government interference or a government endorsed religion.

The president celebrates every religion. Bush went to a mosque after 9/11 and he invited people for the opening of their fast at white house every year that he was in-charge. Yes, Muslims do have the freedom to build a mosque wherever they want, freedom of religion, however with so many other places to build a mosque.. .choose one that does not hit a nerve. It would be refreshing if voters actually understood the situation before commenting or voting. Obama is not, and never has been, a Muslim. His mother's second husband was from Indonesia and Barack lived in that country for a short time before returning to Hawaii to live with his grandparents.

When the Leader of our country choses not to lead by example I am ashamed.

This is not about religious freedom. The Founding Fathers wrote the first amendment to ensure that there was never a state religion in the USA. By definition ISLAM is a spiritual, legal, political, financial threocracy or in other words, state religion. It is not compatible with the US Constitution.

First, people need to stop associating what happened on 9/11 to all muslims. That would be like holding all christians responsible for what the KKK did. 1. the President did not say he approved of the mosque - he spoke only of a legal right to practice one's religion in this country.
2. He should have kept his mouth shut. I don't know who advises him on these things but they clearly do not have a good grasp on the American public's view of this subject (and some others he has felt constrained to comment on). So they also need to shut the he## up.
3. A property owner has the legal right to improve their property however they wish (local zoning laws aside) AND they have the moral obligation to think about how much anger and hurt their actions may cause others.
4. It is doubtful that Muslims will destroy their own religious center, so if the mosque is 3 blocks from ground zero, this should make ground zero safe from jihadist attacks in the future.
5. There are other questionable properties located within the 3 block area around ground zero - strip joints and the like. Aren't they also offensive?
6. Let Mayor Bloomberg figure it out without Obama's assistance. If he's thinking of making a presidential run in 2012, he'll have to remember that he's cutting his odds of winning if he backs this hot potato.

I think we need to be honest here. If you change the word Christian in your post to Muslim you sound exactly like those Muslims that claim that the terrorists are not actually Muslims. The POTUS needs to address this issue head on. Three thousand Americans and other nationals died on 9/11 most of them at this site. I think you make an excellent point about where his priorities are. You might have noticed that the proclamation given this year added something along the lines of calling upon the citizens to pray, or otherwise give thanks. It was definitely watered down to be more accepting of other religions when it is a day specifically for prayer. If your religion/belief/whatever doesn't pray then don't celebrate my day! To Obama's credit, he did mention that prayer is a part of our history and that he supports hit but I'd say actions speak louder than words again.

4. Thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians have been KILLED becuase of the Iraq War, which had nothing to do with 9/11. That war was started by Bad Americans/

5. 45,000 Americans DIE every year because of unavailable health coverage. America is a bad country to allow this to happen.

To be against the Muslim religion is as bad as being against the Christian religion or the Jewish or the Buddhist or Hindus. America is for ALL religions. Only terrorists believe differently.

Most people who say that Christianity is just as violent as Islam are very ignorant of both faiths. Read the Bible and Koran, remember that Christians do not kill 1000's in the name of God. They did hundreds of years ago, but had a reform and realized it was not to be taken literally, every word. Jesus changed the ways of the Old Testament to tolerance. To equate them is ignorant.

This is the year 2010, not 1610.

Islam is 600 years younger than Christianity, they have not had a reformation. They are behaving in literal interpretation as Christians did before Christ. They are not comparable.

People that have studied both, read both, and lived among both religions know that they are in the stage before Reformation, when they want to convert and conquer all with Islam. People that follow what Muslims argue in comparison with Christianity need to research it and you will see. Listen to some ex-Muslims as well as Muslims.

How many Christian people were killed today for breaking a rule of god? I mean surrounded and stoned as in the Old Testament of the Bible for breaking a religious law? Most likely zero!

Now do the same for the Muslims of Islam. Last week they tortured and then shot a 7 month pregnant lady in the head for an ALLEGATION that she committed adultery. The list of similar executions just for today would show you that there IS a difference.

Do not fall for this Muslim/Christian comparison, it isn't a valid comparison and actually surprising to hear that Americans are falling for this Propaganda? The problem with this 9/11 Twin Towers tragedy and the Mosque controversy is that it is being twisted into a question of Religious Tolerance, when it isn't. There are many Mosques built in America.

The true question is one of a Moral and Ethical issue of it's location only!

Someone needs to ask Obama that question! Why does it have to be built in this area. Just a few years ago people were disgusted at the fact of someone making a movie about the event, even when the proceeds were going to the families of the victims, Christian, Muslim, Jew, it didn't matter. It was decided that the area and memory should only if anything have a small memorable built.

Americans would have never even considered building a Mosque close to it simply because it would serve as a constant reminder of the terrorists that caused all the pain.

I wonder if knowing a Mosque will be built there will encourage those involved,...somehow think that their plan succeeded beyond even their wildest dreams.

Can you imagine less than 10 years after the Pearl Harbor attack allowing Japanese/American citizens to build a place of Japanese Worship at the area of the Destroyed Battle Ships in clear view of the area?..I wonder if America would have allowed that? I know of no credible evidence that President Obama is a Muslim. He certainly went to a Christian church for 20 years in Chicago (twice a month I heard him say in an interview, and he insisted he knew nothing of Rev. Wright's more hateful sermons). I can't believe people keep passing that Muslim story around. I am always receiving crazy emails that I refuse to send along. If I find that they are inaccurate, I reply back to the person. One of my friends once got mad at me and said, "You never believe anything!" It's like they WANT to pass on rumors and aren't interested in facts at all!

President Obama had no right to give his opinion on the Mosque and it was the right thing despite what the Reich Winged Republicans are putting the spin on. He commented that, ALL PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY HAVE RELIGIOUS FREEDOM",that includes Islam whether or not the Republican Christians like it or not. Religious freedom includes ALL RELIGIONS not just various Christian Religions.

With the Republican spin on everything President Obama does, there is nothing he can do that they would agree on. The Constitution guarentees freedom of religion for all-not just Republican Christians.

First - modern Christianity is not violent, nor does it seek to dominate, control, or kill their "enemy". It is not a religion seeking to overtake any government. Modern Christianity feeds and clothes the poor around the world. Modern Christianity builds hospitals. And yes, because the church is comprised of people, some get it wrong.

The Muslim world is also a big tent. A considerable faction of this belief system is comprised of murders all over the world. They use their beliefs to spread terror, murder innocent men, women and children globally.

It seems to me that President Obama is upholding his oath of office on religion; so is Mayor Bloomberg in supporting the new mosque location. IMO U.S. citizens who think otherwise have not studied the Constitution or its corollary laws concerning freedom of religion. IMO their negative response to the mosque's location is emotional -- not legal, rational or compassionate.

Personally, I think a mosque near Ground Zero is an excellent deterrent against a future attack anywhere else in the U.S., much less in NYC. It is also an excellent way for conscientious Muslims to offer prayers for the 9/11 victims' souls and their families, and for the salvation of the misguided who commit terrorism in the name of Allah.

THe real question is:

What is the connection to the Muslim Brotherhood, an organization dedicated to

While it is not at the literal ground zero the building that will be torn down was damaged by debris from one or both airplanes and is apparently unusable as it stands. Someone else has said there is a long established mosque in the general area now so why do they need to build one in this location knowing the inflammatory nature of their decision to build there.

The right wing needed to stir up the public with elections coming up in a few months, so they go after people who have been worshiping at an old Burlington Coat factory because their mosque 2 blocks away isnt large enough to accomodate their following.

Why? Because they had obtained a permit to rebuild the building that houses their "congregations" and thought, ok, we can get the public going on this one. It is 2 blocks from 9/11 GZ, lets make them think it is right next to GZ. If we can stir them up enough, they will demand action and there is NOTHING Obama can do but defend the constitutional rights of these americans who are islam. That will get the frenzy going stronger than ever ... ah, before we do that, lets get ready to send out mass emailings so these right wing followers can copy and paste to their hearts content. they were most likely thinking "Now with this "crisis" we can use it as a platform to get our chosen people into office. They will never know what hit them."

So a poll comes out showing republicans and democrats are out of favor with the american public and some ass_le comes up with a wonderful political ploy to garner votes they cant get in a real issues-related manner, so a crisis is created. No worries about divisive manuvering, the general masses are of minor significance, they will do what we want and never realize it.

If you didnt want Islamic worship at that site TWO BLOCKS AWAY, you should have attempted to remove them on 9/12/01 and fought this fight then. They were there, on that same spot the cultural center & mosque is planned for, but the right wing didnt need them at that time to sway voters until now.

No One has asked "when was this permit aquired" - it takes a long procedure to obtain a permit for any major undertaking.

has anyone bothered to ask "why werent we informed when the original application for a permit was requested" - it is public knowledge and in public domain and all abuutters must be notified of such requests.

Why did they wait until appeals processes were expired until the slanderous ad they created. Why not an ad earlier asking people to oppose it during all those public meeting - why indeed wait.

Or did they just need a way to sway voters?
