Me thinks you should study up on the founders and their ideas concerning God and Country and government. Try reading their own words rather than someone's interpretations of their words. You will also find the true context of the so called separation of church & state - I also suggest reading just the 1st Amendment to the Constitution = Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; Note, nothing about Freedom of or from Religion, no words about spearation of church and state...

Point of fact, the founders had sermons before the whole body of Congress, in the Capitol building.

Try reading the Constitution of your own State - all 50 State constitutions reference in some way God in the preambles or the first few paragraphs as the giver of our rights and liberty. 9 of the original 13 states had official state religions. If there was to have been as you say "separation" I would think that those who created our Republic might have said when these states applied to join the Union - "wait you can't mention God, can't have official religions, ets" if they had intended such an interpretation. Tennessee became a State when George Washington was still president - state constitution prohibits atheists from holding public office.

I've read their words. Franklin dropped out of college because he was not religious and did not want to study religion. Jefferson removed every reference of Jesus' divinity from the bible (they call it the Jefferson bible). They were deists, not Christians. Much as they witnessed the tyranny of the British government, they also saw the inquisition wrapping up and dealt with superstitious people who did things like acuse each other of being witches and start hanging and burning folks. No, Still Black, many of the founding fathers were not Christian and some even bordered on hostile towards it. Their own words (not someone's interpretation) back this up. Do a google search on Madison or Jefferson or Payne and Religion and see what you get back.

JJ The Kennedy Center event was one of the most powerfull things I have ever seen. I have been around a while to. As usual, the article totally misrepresents what the event actually was. Everyone had tears in their eyes.

I have been up since 5:00am and watched bus after bus, and throngs of people coming to the mall. Non-stop. They were coming when we got out of the Kennedy Center. The desk clerk said there wasn't a room for miles around, even deep into Va.

This is truly something, something wonderful is happening, you can feel see and hear it everywhere.

Beck reminds me of what Father Charles Coughlin did during the Great Depression. He riled anti-semitism, he held rallies, he did his best to scapegoat minorities for the struggles of the 1930's. He was what Glen Beck is. The difference is Glen Beck lives in an increasingly brown and black America. He can stand on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, but he can't maintain white domination of America. The demographics are against him. I do not know where most of you have gotten your facts about the role of the church in the constitution framers minds. I did a term paper on it when I was in college and found that if you read the writings of John Adams and his son you will see that there was to never be a nationally sponsored religion, but it was intended for religion to work with the government to supply help for people that were in need. Social Security, welfare, foreign aid, and all the other programs that we have in place to make people dependent on the federal government was never the intent of the founding fathers.

I find it interesting if people do not agree with the liberal point of view then we are seen as ignorant, yet if you look at polling that has been done lately over 70% of Americans consider themselves conservative (in reality they are really moderites).

The hate towards Glen Beck is usually taken by the crowd that has taken stances like the federal government. I think both need to read laws before making comments or judgments, and also I would suggest that you watch and study what one believes before you make remarks about an individual.

We have a reformed alcoholic here. Almost every reformed alcoholic has attributed his recovery to a religeous awakening. Beck, in his own words, has pointed out that he has no care for politics. He has proudly pointed out his use of the media to make himself rich through his many separate business activities. He has discovered that he can get people to listen to his rhetoric and send him money, by the ton. He doesn't even believe his own rhetoric, but it sure is making him wealthy. Human personality is an interesting subject. If you invent a religeon and tie up most of the loose ends in your logic, you can get enough people to follow you that you can live in luxury for the rest of your life and have enough to pass on that lifestyle to your family after you die. If Beck wasn't a hipocrite, I might even follow him, but he has too many times drifted into moral extremes that give him away. He has always pulled back from the cliff by suddenly rejecting violence after he has whipped up a frenzy, and other like moves. He has a staff that analyzes the mood generated by each show and fine tunes the next show with that information. He is P.T.Barnum of the Boob Tube and all the fools are being separated from their money by a good show.

Thankfully, the founders created the United States as a secular country whose government and laws are in no way based on the christian religion.

As we get closer to the November elections, isn't it interesting that more and more Americans believe that Obama is a closet Muslim? ...and it's folks like Glenn Beck that are propagating this nonsense....which is spread over hundreds and hundreds of websites and after a while it begins to seep in. Then the old adage about repeating a lie over and over and over proves its merit. This methodology of starting with a conclusion and fashioning the facts around totally partisan mud-slinging is what the conservatives have now been reduced to.....but unfortunately for Democrats, this kind of crap works, because most Americans refuse to even take the time to research facts and having a open mind to the outcome....so not only are Americans ignorant of the facts, but they are becoming increasingly WILLFULLY ignorant of the facts......conservatives are proud of this? From the health care debate (death panels) to the Iraqi conflict (Saddam was directly involved in 9/11), to this ridiculous Tea Party/Birthers movement.....the list goes on and on......conservatives seems to rely on willful ignorance and adamantly refuse to alter their opinions when facts are presented in a reasonable manner.....it just amazes me.

Further up the chain here, someone signing in as "Ben" made a comment about Beck worshipping Satan. I've seen nothing to support this, but he is a Mormon and my sister's pastor told the congregation that the Mormons worship the Devil. I'm not a Mormon and, while I can not accept their theology, I know they do not worship the Devil.

Maybe Beck thinks he is "the Prophet yet to come". Ask your Mormon friends who that is. If he is, I'll be looking for some other god to help us. Maybe in the Celtic pantheon.

Pull a quarter out of your pocket and read "Out loud" what is written to left of George Washington's head. "In God We Trust!" Thats what it says, its on all our money, has been for over 200 years, its written on all of our government buildings, its on the wall behind the judge in state and federal courts. Our nation was founded on Christian beliefs and principles and this country is turning away from God, the same God who has had his hand over us, protecting us for 250 years!

Nice try, but "In God We Trust" was added to U.S. currency in 1864 - and that was because of the same kind of pseudo-religious "revolution" we're seeing with Glenn Beck. It wasn't required to be on coins until 1908, and it wasn't until 1956 that it was required to be on paper currency. It did not become the motto of the U.S. until 1957 - as a reaction to Communism. To quote the Congressional statement, "In these days when imperialistic and materialistic Communism seeks to attack and destroy freedom, it is proper to remind all of us of this self-evident truth that as long as this country trusts in God, it will prevail."

As for our country being founded on "Christian" principles - a little basic research will show you that most of the founding fathers were Deists, not Christians. If this was a Christian nation, there would be more references to Jesus. "God" could apply to the deity of ANY religion.

All I know is this; My grandparents came over here in the mid thirty's from Germany because there was true racism there and it was not a good place to live and raise a family if one was Jewish. I never listened to him because I worked during the air times but I got layed off this Past July and was curious as to why so many people hate him and Hannity and why they get death threats which I think is terrible for human beings to show such hatred...and what I heard from both Hannity and Beck was a love for America, facts that are easily looked up and verified. I was seeing the downgraded America before I even heard these guys. Over half the population on food stamps and welfare, inflated government taxing those who are working to death so they can't even have a semblance of any quality of life, Obama spending hundreds of thousands on vacation after vacation while millions are scrapping for any job just to keep food on the table. The real meaning of separation of church and state is government is not to interfere in the operation of churches. In other words, the government cannot come in and interfere or take over a church in order to make that church do its bidding. Firstly, they did not want to create another Europe with its intolerance, and secondly, there were many feuding denominations here - Protestant vs Catholic, etc. They did not want people being killed over religion. Further, Jefferson and Franklin believed in freedom of choice, which, at that point in time, was a foreign concept to most religions. Yes, the religious believed in God-ordained fate. First off, let me say that I do not like or support Glen Beck. I think he is a extreme right wing nut. Secondly, I do not consider myself to be a very religious person. I do believe in faith, but have found little use for organized religion.

What I would like to point out is that our constitution guarantees us freedom of religion, not freedom from religion as some of the left seem to think. The extreme left wants to remove all reference to god or religion from our civil society. They were pushing to remove "in god we trust" from our money. The founding fathers definitely believed that religion had a place in our society. Just look at the declaration of independence "... endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights ..." Who do you think they meant when they wrote "Creator" and capitalized it to boot. Obviously this was a reference to god.

I think that our country has lost it's way. Our moral compass, that largely came from our individual religious beliefs, gave us all a sense of right and wrong. That moral compass seems to have disappeared from our society. A new imperative, to get ahead by any means necessary, seems to have taken over. This is witnessed by the increasing frequency of people being found to be accumulating wealth through fraudulent means. Whether it is the Madoffs of the world with their Ponzi schemes, the CEOs and other officers or corporations with back dated stock options and falsified financial reports, the mortgage modification and debt relief scams, politicians being accused of numerous frauds, etc., there seems to be a huge increase in this get ahead at all costs attitude. A large number of people in this country seem to have completely lost their sense of right and wrong. If a return to a focus on faith and religion is the way to regain this moral compass is up for debate. I, for one, do not see how it could hurt. In any case, I think that we need to find some way back. Our society is becoming less and less civil with every passing year. We must find a way to reverse this trend.

JS: While our Constitution protects freedom of religion, the Bible warns against judging others. This is what the right, and your post, seems to do. Who are these people or you, for that matter, to judge others and their "moral compass". This is exactly what the Pilgrims were fleeing from when they landed here. Some other group of people imposing their idea of "moral compass". I think it best if people minded their own compasses. If we had more of that going on, perhaps this country would return to civility.

All medical forms now say "Check one: Christian, Catholic, Athesit etc." I have the religious freedom to be an Atheist, which means I have the religious freedom FROM being religious. That being said, I really resent the argument that morality is tied in with religion. Morality is often times completely ABSENT from religion. Persecution, war, discrimination, all in the name of a religious order is the name of most religious games. Morality is one's personal ethics, their code of conduct by which they lead their lives. I am a moral person in that I do not discriminate, I do not hurt others (intentionally), I do not cause damage (intentionally). I live my life legally and happily in a live and let live manner, and I do NOT subscribe to any one's religious ideals. How am I not moral?

The National Socialist German Workers' Party was quite different from capitalists in that period, and the philosophical differences remain to be found and studied in history. Naziism was all about the socalistic side of government - seizing and redistributing wealth, feeding the people a single line of thought that required the state to control all aspects of life, etc.

The red backgound of the Nazi Party flag was a symbol offered by Hitler in recognition of the communist movement to the east - the socialization of industry and society as controlled by a central government. Socialism itself is not inherently evil, it is about promoting society as a whole - making things "equal". For socialism to work everyone, everyone must submit to a higher authority. Then they strip away more freedoms than socialism will to protect the accumulated power.

Ironically, the definition of a "Classical Liberal" is someone who believes in a small government and freedom from control by a strong central government - what we call a conservative today. Slavery is a part of history and from a historical perspective is not about blacks. All people, regardless of skin color, have had their time as slaves. As groups conquered various part of Europe and Asia, they enslaved the people of the conquered lands. Don't forget that during the formation of our country, nearly everyone was of European descent where, at the time, slavery was accepted.

Don't blame slavery on America. Americans did not create slavery. And many of the founders were opposed to the enslavement of people. See Article I Section 2 of the US Constitution. The "three fifths of all other persons," was not intended as means to diminish the value of a person, but rather to diminish the amount of representation and power from the south. Had slaves been counted wholey for determining the representation in the house, the southern states would have been excess power in the House. And, since the southern states were predominately slave territory, this excess representation would have lengthened the practice of slavery in this country.

Slavery was and still is wrong, but none of us alive today have ever been slaves or owned slaves. It's time to move beyond this argument. If not, how much longer should we continue this argument? Another hundred years, two hundred, three hundred...It's time to move beyond this and everyone needs to accept their current station in life and if they are not happy about it, work to get out of it. Continuing to blame history is not going to help any of us.

It seems as if people envision the manner in which slaves were acquired involved white men with guns and lasso's running around Africa rounding them up like cattle. This was not the case. Typically, leaders of differing clans throughout Africa would take prisoners during conflicts between one another - for the sole purpose of selling them to the slave trade ships. Such ships were anchored off the African coast long before America's involvement in the slave industry. As with everything, it was a profit based business, with everyone taking their cut.

Atlas- As I was addressing another commentator, perhaps you took my comment out of context. The commentator said specifically that black people should be thankful that they were brought over from Africa (as slaves). Hence why my comments were focused primarily on black slavery. I actually passed all of my history courses in both high school and college, and am well aware of how slavery has played out with other races and cultures.

For the record, I never blamed slavery on America, and I don't know where you got that information. Slavery began LONG before America was even founted. But tell me, since slavery was so instrumental in the development of America, how is America not at fault for its role in slavery? It was primarily over States Rights (including the right to own slaves). The Civil War ended in 1865, and yet in 1881, the first of the Jim Crow Laws was enacted in Tennessee, segregating train cars. Racism is very much alive today, even though it isn't legalized, it is still widely practiced. An MSNBC article yesterday placed the start of this recession immediately after our current president was elected. He laid out all of his plans to squash the greedy, evil, business folks and all of their practices. The response was to accelerate the withdraw of thier money from US investments in order to protect themselves. Until he's gone and business as usual can go on, we are going to stay in a recession. It's not rocket science.

I've listened to Glenn Beck as long as I could stand it one day. If you truly believe he is not racist then you haven't listened to him at all. Making bad laws is bad enough, but you have to recognize that the law is bad and change it. The lending problems were revealed by Regulators in Congressional hearings as early as 2003. This included regulators having issues with no down payments, no income requirements, and no accountability of Freddie and Fannie for how they made loans, packaged them, and sold them. This brought a firestorm of criticism of the regulators by members of Congress.

Members of the Republican party, but not all, realized the problem as well as George Bush. Bush requested reform 20 recorded times since his state of the Union address in January 2003. The problem is the majority of members including ALL democrats AND SOME Republicans had no interest in changing anything. NOTHING was wrong according to them.

This stalemate continued through January 2007 despite more and more Republicans coming on board with party leadership. Once the Democrats took over in 2007, All finance reform was tabled at the committee level. Bush, Bernanke, and Paulsen still made calls for changes and nothing was done by the New Leadership. NOTHING!

If you look at month by month numbers, unemployment stopped falling in 2006 and began to rise about June 2007. This is VERY important to note. Higher risk Businesses about March of 2007 started getting delayed or turned down for financing new projects.

This is because the falsely labeled toxic mortgages were starting to fail causing their ability to make loans to decrease. Banks knew they had been had and had no recourse because the loans were mainly from Freddie and Fannie. Some insured the mortgages using the same packaging used to get them to purchase the loans (caused AIG to go bankrupt). Some sat on them hoping they wouldn't bankrupt themselves, some sold as many as possible them before they "blew up". Some "creatively" reclassified to sell them.

The whole thing blew up when the international banking group, which George Soros is involved in, cashed in 500 Billion dollars in Treasuries in just 2 hours. This was over the toxic loans made by Freddie and Fannie that were sold to American banks who they had invested in. It was about - you deceived us - we insist that you back up the loans to save our investment. There is a huge amount of TARP money that went overseas and we don't know who to.

Once this blew, we were assured of a major recession until we can recover from the losses. The real problem right now is government wants business to expand while it is enslaving them with more rules, regulations, built in escalation of costs and new taxes. Translation we are now going to be here for a good long while unless something changes. Hopefully we don't drown instead.

Odd about the accusations that Beck is a liar. When the WH made this claim, FNC sent a letter requesting a list of the 'lies'. It took the WH months to reply and it was an inconsequential mistake that Beck had corrected. I dont think the history books say the founding fathers were racists......but they do say that many were slaveholders. If you are distorting "slaveholders" to imply "racist" then you have a comprehension issue........

But there is the little problem of slavery that the founding fathers left on the table so blatantly untouched, for others to figure out later...... Read into that what you will.

Ahem, you suggest read a history book which might be a good start for you. I watch Founder's Fridays on Beck because he has the actual historians who wrote books on American history. He interviews them and encourages viewers to do your own research. History has always been a passion of mine because you need to know where you've been to make good decisions for the future.

People are so hung up on saying that we need to go back to the values withheld by our founding fathers. Have you done much true research on these people? Many of them were just as corrupt or more so than people today. Things were just more acceptable back then. Wife beating, adultery, racism...these things were commonplace back in those times and who wants to write in a history book the truth and deface what people try to believe were the truly moral times and stand against manipulators like Glen Beck?

The founding fathers didn't leave the slave issue blatantly untouched. If you read any of their letters, autobiographies and biographies you will discover that the issue was hotly debated. Dr. Benjamin Rush and Robert Morris as well as others such as John Adams were adamantly against slavery and the slave trade. Dr. Rush, with others, made several attempts to abolish it. Thomas Jefferson, and others from the southern states, were not of the same mind so slavery remained. At the time, our founders had so many other problems like national currency, funding a new nation, approving a constitution, protecting our borders, etc. that this issue was not resolved. Does that make them racists? I don't think so. Unfortunately sometimes you have to accomplish what you are able and put your trust in your posterity to be able to accomplish what you could not. These men kept this nation together when all the world was waiting to take what they could when it fell apart. That had to happen before the slave issue could ever be resolved.

I also know that in Texas, there is a deep seated move to insure that history is reinvented. But then, of course, it would be wouldn't it after a jerk like Bush?

Texas was considered disputed territory after the Louisiana Purchase. Jefferson thought the Purchase went to the Rio Grande, and contained about half of Texas, while Spain (Mexico would not gain its independence from Spain for another 20 years) claimed that the border was the Red River. As such, we signed a treaty with Spain that declared the border to be the Red River. When Mexico gained its independence from Spain, Mexico allowed some Americans to settle in Northeastern Texas, but many Americans settled illegally in that part of Mexico. The Mexicans saw that Americans were planning to steal Texas from Mexico, so they put more stringent restrictions on the Texans, which is when Texas (which still had a majority Mexican population, though white Americans had all the power) rebelled and somehow checkmated Mexico (remember - Texas LOST at the Alamo, and actually all major battles until the final battle). Still, though, at this time, Gen. Santa Anna was dismissed from his post without his knowledge, and, as such, Texas's independence was recognized by the United States and Texas, but not by Mexico itself. In addition, Texas claimed that its borders went to the Rio Grande, while Mexico did not. This wasn't a problem until the US annexed Texas, and then-President Polk sent soldiers to the disputed territory, knowing full well that they would be shot at by the Mexican soldiers. When they got shot at, Pres. Polk went to the Senate, and asked them to declare war on Mexico, which they did - to some very vocal opposition, especially from one Rep. from Illinois named Abraham Lincoln (yes, THAT Abraham Lincoln). When the US easily defeated Mexico in only a few months, the opponents (who were justified in their opposition) looked stupid. Still, it was the aftermath of the Mexican-American War that forced the Compromise of 1850 (without which, the Civil War would have taken place 10 years earlier and probably with a much different result).
