To be honest, the Christian faiths are more of the "Take over the world. Convert everybody to our way of thinking. Turn everyone to 'our side'," mentality. That's how oh so many wars - from the Crusades right up to Afghanistan - have been perpetrated.
I am not Muslim. But I have made a practice of learning as much as I can about ALL religious beliefs. I have friends of many different faiths - even Muslims, and they are, without exception, all wonderful, caring, kind, and giving people. The Quran does not preach world dominance. It does, like the Bible, preach converting the non-believer. But it also preaches love and goodness as the root of being a good Muslim and a faithful follower of Allah (God). Sadly, as with any other belief system, there will always be those who take from the whole only those parts that suit their mindset. And those are the ones, whether Muslim, Christian, or Jew, who will always be the thorn on the rose.
God's word preaches compassion, love, goodness, and forgiveness. This fruitcake in Florida practices none of those things. So who's really the bad guy in this scenario?

I would have thought that even you two could understand this. I won't give you the history because you won't understand it and I laid all that out yesterday.
This is NOT conventional warfare fellas. That's why we lost in Viet Nam. We were still trying to fight WWII and guess what? It didn't work so we declared victory and left the Viet Namese to their fate.
This is a war for the street, the house, the village and each individual Afghan citizen. Insurgents don't line up in ranks and try to hold onto land and other traditional military assets. They hit and they run. They melt into the surrounding populace and "disappear" when we try to hit back which causes collateral damage and they use that to their advantage.
So, we move into an area and control the area, we drive up and down the streets, we hand out food, clothing, candy for the children and we slowly but surely convince the populace that we're not the bad guys, we are their friends and guess what happens? They start to tell us when the insurgents are the area and where they are hiding. They refuse to cooperate with the insurgents and pretty soon the terrorists have to move to another location because they can't "hide in plain sight" in that area any more.
That's an over-simplification of the basic plan but that's how it works. And it DOES work. That's how we put down the insurgency in Iraq. We moved in and we OWNED Falujah, then we rebuilt the water treatment plant, we got the electricity turned back on, we handed out food, fresh water, and talk to the children in the street. And guess what? Eventually one of these little kids tells us the insurgents have moved into Uncle Abdul's house and are terrorizing the family. So we go down to Abdul's place, do our very best to get the family to safety and KILL THE INSURGENTS. When you take away their cover and come down on them in force they LOSE EVERY TIME. But you can't do that if the local populace sees you as the bad guys. That's how it worked in Iraq and that's how it's working in Afghanistan.
Now, how cooperative do you think those folks are going to be if some nut job in Florida BURNS their holy books and spits in their faces? How friendly do you think they will be? How glad to see the big Islam Hating Foreign Devils move into their region? And how many of those young villagers are going to say, "Osama is right, they are the great Satan" and join up to blow themselves up at a roadblock on in the middle of a "meet and greet" patrol?

It hampers what we are trying to do in Afghanistan and puts US lives in even greater danger than they already are just by being in a war zone. If this guy had ever read the Quran, which he admittedly has not, he would know that there are a load of similarities between the two books. The Muslim religion is a peace loving religion. As for reading the Koran: Just like the Bible you need to know the context that these statements were made. There are a lot of very war like statements in the Koran. These revelations came when the small group of Muslims were fighting for their lives, struggling to survive in a society dominated by warlords and thieves. That's just one example. The punishments for theft are harsh, but such punishments, barbaric as they were, were common in the time of the 7th century. Wanting to take over the world? I doubt that most of the Arabs who acceptable the Prophet Muhammad knew or understood that there was much of a world beyond the land of Arabia. There was no United States at the time. It is difficult for us in our times to understand that Islam had a great civilizing influence on our world. Within a century of this religion's founding they had spread, yes, oftentimes violently, because how things were done in the 7th and 8th century, to much of the known world. They became dedicated scholars, resurrecting the study of mathematics, science and certainly literature. The modern study of history came from Islam. I would hope that many of the Islamic extremists would learn this about their faith.

Warfare is also justified for the purpose of purging a people from the bondage of idolatry or the association of anything with God. The Crusades were one of the few occasions when Christians took the offensive to regain the "occupied territories" of the Holy Land, also an act of cultural self-preservation.

If this man's objective was to gain the world's attention, he has already achieved it just by the amount of media coverage he has received. Look at the attention he has gotten in this country from the President on down, and even the Vatican has objected to his plans. This is to say nothing of the protests in the Muslim world, in Afghanistan and Indonesia and elsewhere. Today on the same MSNBC page we have this story telling us that burning the book a man wrote, men print, and intolerants follow will stir up the extremists. There is also a story of the Imam who tells us that if we force the movement of the proposed mosque it will stir up the extremist. Both of which will endanger our troops.

Both of these acts are Constitutionally protected and should not be swayed by what intolerant cult followers from a backwater country have to say. When a person becomes a soldier, President, Attorney General, they take an oath to uphold the Constitution. Not capitulate to some kooks because it offends them.
It is time to rethink the peacefulness of the Islamic faith. Intolerance is unacceptable. The books which will be burned is not their "holy book". They are being acquired mostly by people donating them freely and belong to the church. They can do with them what they may. The same goes for the property in New York. If Petraeus is so feareful for the lives of our soldiers because we offend the sensibilities of "extremist" then he should convince Obama to do one of two things. Develop a more agressive strategy that will decimate the Taliban much more quickly or get the hell out. The soldiers are already in harm's way. When you have to go back 500 years or longer to find a parallel in Christianity to the violence being perpetrated by radical Islamics now, you need to understand how weak your argument is.
By the standards of the day, the actions of the medieval Christians were pretty much par for the course.
In the intervening 500-600 years, the western world has evolved and such behavior is no longer even remotely acceptable - it hasn't been for centuries. Yes, Islam is on parity chronologically with Christianity when the Christians were perpetrating their massive violence.
The difference being, that the vast majority of the 6 billion people that AREN'T Muslims, and the 6.9 billion people who are NOT radical Muslims find the radical Muslim behavior unacceptable, and yet are being held hostage to it - in an age where we know three minutes after it happened that yet another radical has killed more innocent people.

I agree with you. I think that this pastor is a jerkwad, but at the same time if we stop him from burning those books then we may as well admit that we're going to submit to islamic religious law.. Given your statement, it is pretty easy to see why the Pastor's frustration with Islam is being expressed against the book which is the basis for the persecution you mention. Is it the best way to express his frustration? You and I don't think so. Apparently he does, and it is his constitutional right to express that frustration in a legal fashion. He is doing that.
It is important to note that the laws that protect the Islamic faith in our country are the same ones that protect the faith of this Pastor. When Islamic followers blew up the Twin Towers, our laws protected peaceful followers of Islam. When this Pastor burns books on Saturday, those same laws need to be applied to his faith.

This seems to be a double sided issue. Freedom of speech allows us freedom of expression, but the principle of the matter is morality and ignorance. There are other relative ways to show bitterness toward the event of September 11, burning parts of the Koran is not one. Not everyone who studies a Koran represents the monsters behind this horrible event. We complain about them training their children to fight - we let our children play violent video games that train them to kill Arabs. We complain that the Afghani's let Al Qaida train in their country - we train mercenaries for hire in camps in America run by corporations like Black Water Securities. We complain about how women are treated and have a huge domestic violence problem. We claim we allow for religious freedom but want the Muslim women to remove their burkas. We demand democracy for other countries yet lock out legitimate candidates from presidential debates. We complain about statements made by extremist's like Osama bin Laden as if they represented everyone yet can't see how what this extremist's actions reflect on us.
The hypocrisy demonstrated by these attitudes is the reason we are fighting wars in the first place. Our belief in our own superiority (ethnocentrism) is disrespectful to them and their cultures that have existed for thousands of years where ours is less than two hundred years old (industrialism, capitalism and democracy). America was formed though the abuse of human rights (slavery) and has only over come some of the women's rights issue in recent times. We still abuse parts of our society through useless victimless crimes like our marijuana laws.
We have no room to talk. The brown women in those societies don't need us to interfere with their relationships with their brown men. They don't need capitalism or democracy or help from us. What they need is to be treated fairly and respected. We need to remove our troops from their countries and let them fight their own wars for progress.
Since America has so many problems and social issues, (lack of health care and retirement protections, hospitals for the mentally ill, housing for the handicapped, etc. etc.) Maybe China should invade us, Maybe start with a big bombing run to "shock and awe" us into compliance with their beliefs.

The good reverend has a legal right under the 1st Amendment to burn the Koran. That does not mean he should do it, especially out of sensitivity to the feelings of Muslims.

Exactly, the Bible is only a book, it is the words in that book that are the religion and the words can be re-printed, it is the same with the church, that is a building, the real church is in the person, that is God’s temple not the building.

Christians worship a loving God, who wants to save us from sin, from ourselves. Christianity cannot be compared to any "religion".

This entire thing is ridiculous, but as a matter of course, in order to have a "Bonfire of the Insanities", this nut-job, self-righteous, "true believer" will need to get a burn permit from the local Fire Department. Hopefully, they have a little better control over their emotions on this than everyone else.
By the way, in order for an Islamic Center to be built in New York City, it must get a building permit, which in NYC includes approval by both FDNY and NYPD before starting construction, so I would not worry about that little bit of stupidity either.

He could claim to be a bridge builder for all non-hijacking religions. He could get the new Black Panther party members to guard the front door and openly declare the center to be for minorities. Our problem assisting the Iraqi Army with security for the January,2009 elections was just the opposite of hate. Our Brigade was on the ground 14 months and lost 6 Soldiers, including 2 murdered after a community meeting and 1 suicide. Compared to 2006 when we lost 6 soldiers several weeks that was an amazing turn around. One of the reasons I strongly denounce this close minded act of intolerance is it adds ammunition to the Islamist's arsenal of hate for an act that I oppose under any circumstance. How about we get our comparisons correct here. If the Imam in NYC wanted to build the Mosque and then burn bibles in it, that would be a proper comparison. Otherwise it's rather different. Can't really compare a group that wants to build something on a location to a group that wants to burn a book. Their reasoning for doing something is different so it creates a different situation. Regardless of either situation though, the 1st amendment protects both actions.
If you start restricting particular speech based upon what you think the final results might be then what's to stop you from picking other forms of speech which you consider inflammatory.

By stating that you adhere to freedom of speech and freedom of expression you accept the fact that certain forms of expression will be distasteful. You also accept the fact that certain forms of speech will inflame extremist groups both inside and outside of the country. This can cause a increase in the number of casualties in a war. If you are unwilling to accept this, draw up a petition to amend the constitution to restrict certain forms of free speech such as speech against certain religions or speech which you believe shouldn't be permitted. Act2 let me try to explain... Both acts are protected as freedom of speech under the 1st amendment. Which means the government can't really step in and stop them. However, a group of people that had nothing to do with killing innocent people deciding to build a mosque is rather different from a pastor that wants to burn a book. If the people that orchestrated the bombing decided to then build a mosque over the graves of those that died, then you could argue that the two acts are similar. However, since you haven't tied the people building the mosque to the group that crashed the planes, your argument lacks any merit. The group that wants to burn the book is specifically trying to inflame others through a form of protest while the first group has many other possible reasons for wanting to build a mosque. I think what you're confusing is action/intent and your perceived action/intent. It would also appear that you think the Imam in NYC helped plan the bombings or help orchestrate them. So... I think you need to do a bit of research.
Think of it like this. Could I say that all Caucasians are evil and should be bared from having children because a couple of white priest molested little boys. One would clearly say no, that doesn't work. The white priest happen to share a characteristic with other white people but that characteristic isn't related to the urge to molest little boys. I am not sure how many of you have read large portions of the Quran, but having read about 60% of it, I found it riddled with enormous amounts of hated and death towards the Non-Believer.

I read your links, and although I am Christian I would have to say that I understand why the govn't made the soldiers burn the Bible. If distributing those bibles that were written specifically to convert Muslims to Christians our gov't could have been looked upon as insult while we were in a war already.. and had the military send them back to the church that had the published the Bibles would have shipped them back possibly without the military seeing them. The troops would have been in more danger if the Bibles were delivered. We can not push our religion on anyone.

How about the hostage,? Perhaps a well meaning "good samaritan" could step in and give the dirtbag a peice of his mind? Does that sound like a good idea? Yes, we do have freedom of speech, and freedom of religion in this country. But there is a HUGE difference between freedom of speech that enrages the ENTIRE GLOBE, and speech that offers a difference in ideals, and shines light on various aspects of a subject. I am a born again christian and worship in a fairly large church. Most people I know well are born again christians. No one I know thinks this pastor in Florida should do this. It's just ineffective and ridiculous. Do we have the right to stop it? Probably not. This is America, we have the right to free speech and peaceful protest. But I pray this pastor in Florida changes his mind and decides not to do this.

I think the only reason he is saying something in this case is because it's getting so much press here and internationally. Its not a matter of convenience. Guess what dont report on this dumby and only fifty one people know about it. We dont seem to have problems with other countries burning our flag in effigy but are we being oversensitive to giving this guy facetime and fifteen minutes of fame. If there is any issue that any organization is getting funding from "Anti-American" groups or groups of questionable ideologies that would be against the best interest of the country, yes. Most simply put, radical Christians annoy you; radical Muslims kill you. Because whatever happens because of his actions, we all are going to feel the repercussion of his actions. As far as Christianity is concern, it is not just another religion but lifestyle based upon the life of Jesus Christ. After reading most of you all comments, and how negative you are, it would be a good idea for you all to really get to know Jesus Christ, and what he has done for you. Father God (Jehovah) wants not only for us to get along but to love one another as he has loved us. There is not indication that building the mosque is motivated by hate or intented to express hatred of anyone, whereas it is pretty clear that the koran burning is. Don't be surprise if this Pastor is arrested on hate crime charges. It is no different than burning a cross on your front lawn.
James, it is not a crime to "hate". A "hate crime" requires that the underlying act (such as assault) already be illegal.
With the proper permits (such as for open-air burning, etc...), burning a cross on your own property is not illegal.
