Starfox I don't know what you are smoking but I surely do hope it is legal. That said, I definitely tend to look at both sides of the coin and the coins I have been looking at lately are counterfeit. Regardless of who leads, for dems and repubs are pretty much the same when in office, our country is going down hill fast and that wagon has NO brakes at all.

Still, if you are able to stand the pain, there is a way to get us out of the financial morass we find ourselves in today. Problem is, the first series of cuts will need to be in areas of "gummint" that the Fed has zero business calling it's own. Welfare is best managed at the state or local level. Education is also best managed at the local level for what is good and proper for Kentucky and Tennessee may not work well at all in California. Those are just two areas I can imagine may represent opportunities for vast improvements. There are many others.

As for controlling the budget and shrinking the debt, we need to do a little pre-work before we start the chainsaw surgury. The military does not need to fight every useless war that comes along and can be brought home from the two we are already involved in today. Politicians start the involvement and pols need to end it too. Bring our people home and out of harm's way. Instant savings if I do the math correctly of approximately 800 billion a year right there and that is only the cash needed to actually "Fight" if you can call what we do fighting. Then there is the idea of a level playing field and here I could write an entire book on most favored nation status agreements that favor one nation completely and charge the USA with massive amounts of rework, customs, and other fees before our products even get into a market, if they are allowed into that market. I suggest our fees, our inspections, our etc.s match 100% what goes on in the other nation(s).

If there is a level playing field, not only do we gain in the short term more revenues but workers can rejoice as they make more product that can be sold overseas. I might add, get out of NAFTA for it has done little to enhance working conditions here in the USA or made more jobs for Americans. Kill it off and do so on day one of any new presidency. More workers mean more long term revenues for workers who work actually DO pay taxes.

The last element in debt reduction I label as pre-work is that of a flat tax that taxes every one at exactly the same rate, and has zero deductions or kick backs. While this will most assuredly kick the seriously poor squarely in the ba!!s it also treats the rich and the poor alike and increases the revenue stream exponentially. One must remember, 47% of all the folks in American do NOT pay taxes today. Add that to the revenue stream and all of a sudden we don't even need to worry about a balanced budget for the budget would be in surplus mode already but there is one cut I feel incredibly strong about even if it would increase the unemplyment rolls by many many bodies and that is to reduce or completely eliminate the IRS. Think for a moment, if every penny earned in the USA as wages or as profit was taxed at the same rate, you the comptroller/CFO only need to write a single check each pay period to the treasury there by making the IRS and all of those twice Dam.ed forms go away.

When I started this rant I said there as a WAY but that way would be most difficult and painful. Now you can imagine just how painful I meant.

What?! Politicians trying to distance themselves from the Democrat party, I can't imagine why........oh wait, I remember:

• 70% of Americans are against amnesty for illegal immigrants, Democrats seem to be in favor of it.
• 60% of Americans did NOT want the Health Care bill passed, Democrats passed it anyway.
• 56% of Americans say they do not support a Cap and Trade bill, yet the Democrats would pass this in a second if they could without losing too many seats in the Senate and the House.
• Obama has an approval rating of 41%......I would say I am suprised it's that high, but we must remember that 96% of African-Americans voted for him and few are changing that stance regardless of what he does.......they make up 13% of that 41%, then 19% of Americans consider themselves True Liberals. That totals 32% of the 41%. The last 9% are most likely either uneducated or they are approving of Obama because they are on the receiving end of his "Redistributive Change". Although Obama ran as a Moderate in his campaign, he has been as far left on issues as just about any President we have had in our history.
• Americans are becoming more educated, and Socialism and moving closer toward tyranny on the rule of law scale does not sit well with most Americans.
• Taking over private companies, bailing out big businesses, banks, and especially the UNIONS. Trying to manipulate the markets and breaking every economic principle they possibly can......and failing in their efforts to try to make things better.

Is it any surprise that politicians are distancing themselves from this Administration and the Democratic Party?

Then obama wants to spend another $50 billion on jobs creation bill, which is another name for stimulus, on road projects. Road projects were in the first bill. It does not take an economist or rocket scientist to figure out that if you got a job off the first stimulus, you know that the money is going to come to an end, you are not going to go out and buy a house or new car. You will save the money. How pathetic the dems are for what they are trying and now running away from what they did to us.

First off it was the democratic spending and depleting of our nation with their lies about fannie mae and freddie mac that has destroyed our financial institutions as you can see we had to pay these institutions for the democratic housing blunders and lies at a congretional hearings.

Secondly the democratic majority voted us into war. I seen hillary and even buyh both insisting on war hillary wanted to go to iraq and iran. President bush wanted terrifies but he was shouted down and the democrats got their way.

We are still in a war we cannot afford!

1. Bush spending? Star, let me be the first to tell you an obvious truth you seem not to know...The President Proposes...the Congress disposes when it come to the budget. While the GOP played right into the dems hands with thier propensity of spending it was the last 2 years of the Bush with the dems in charge of Congress that spending went thru the roof. And, in the last 3 years and 9 months the dems with Obama quadrupled the national debt with Tarp and Stimulus 1 and 2. While there is still 50 billion in the stimulus "account" Obama and the dems want a new stimulus program. The effect of all the previous 'stimulent' is zero. And in fact has created more financial problems and more unemployment...unless you are a member of a UNION. The dems and obama made sure that all the shovel ready programs funded were UNION. And Unions only account for 20% of the work force if you leave federal employees out of the equation. Obama and the dems took over GM and Chrysler (62% Gov't ownership) and screwed the non union bond holders who normally have "first call" on any funds for payment of the bonds and made sure the Unions were first in line with over 10 billion into their coffers...Housing and Banking world problems are all tracked back Barney Frank and Chris Dodd, who forced Freddy and Fanny to make 96% of all the bad loans that crippled the housing industry and unless a bank or investment house "voted" against those loans they went belly up.

How many times did Dems and Obama say "The health care bill will insure that insurance rates will not increase"? to get the bill passed...among other even more obvious lies. And they called Congressmen liars when they said they would immediately increase. Insurance premiums have already gone up by an average of 15% nationwide and the Health Care Bill does not even take effect till 2012/2013/2014.

Ask Bill Clinton (or Reagan) what happened when tax cuts are implemented for the 10% of the tax payers who pay 40% of the tax revenue? Or the total 25% of earners who pay 70% of the tax income? More jobs are created, more tax revenue is realized and the economy improves dramatically...It is what got us out of the Carter and Ford caused inflation and depression, with a Dems controlled Congress, Dramatically out of it. With Carter I personally felt the mess he created when I was transferred to Massachusetts, had to buy a home and had to pay 14.3% for a mortgage. And MY mortgage was the last fixed rate issued in the State. They went to 22% within a year. Four years later I was able to re-fi and got a 7% mortgage thanks to Reagan.

Bush being made the whipping boy for 3.9 years of dem control of the budget, spending and the economy, all of which are in the tank and sinking deeper is BS. The bottom line is this mess "belongs" to the dems and Obama. They own it and because of their political progressive, 'share the wealth' and 'redistribution' political stance, they can't fix it. Yes, people voted for Obama and the Dems to do something about health care issues.

They did NOT vote for them to do what they did, which is a massive redistribution of wealthy the size of which has never been seen before in this country. They did NOT vote for them to do so in backroom deals made with special interests, like pharma and the unions. They did NOT vote for them to do so via bribery, within their OWN party. They did NOT vote for them to pass a piece of legislation so huge and unwieldy, that it will take four years or better to sort out what the hell most of it even means.

It took a while but Sherry girl has it right. This is a classic battle, and I thought it was coming. Those who want to take this country 'back' and those who want to move it forward. I saw it growing up in the 1960s. We moved forward, oh, the Nixons and the right of that time tried to move it back, but Civil Rights still stand, the women's movement flourished, and even major conservative Republicans like Sarah Palin, benefitted from it, and we became a more tolerant and decent society. The right wing has spent the better part of the past 40 years trying to undo all the work of the 60s. The Republicans might well win, but this is a temporary victory. All they seem to be proposing is undoing all the things the Obama Administration has done. They will not have such a big majority. And when they actually take action they will face great opposition. Moving backward is just too hard to do. I hear no positive plan from the Republicans and the TEA Party types about how we acheive full employment, eliminate poverty, and ensure all Americans with health care. All they talk about is undoing that. Now we hear that the poverty rate is going up to 15 percent. The poverty rate was 28 percent when Lyndon Johnson took over a president. His enlightened Great Society Programs cut that rate in half and it has stayed there for a generation. Now, after the disasterous Republican administration of George W. Bush, six of those years with the Republicans controlling the House, the Senate, the Courts and most state legislators, a great recession, a worldwide recession is forcing people into poverty. Obama was of course, too modest in his proposed to jump start the economy through his stimulus package. He should have immediately stopped the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, brought all these troops home and used the money we were spending on those wars to rebuild America. It looks like there is a step back coming but we will come back. It's like Obama said while quoting Martin Luther King, 'the arch of justice is long but it always bends forward.' I will remain strong in the knowledge that we will win and make our nation a truly great one, not through wars, hate and bitterness but great in the service we give to our fellow man.

If you think people voted for Obama due to Health Care, please link it. People voted for Obama because of the dream and vision of hope and change. Because of the slick talking snake oil salesmanship he showed. Because he appeared to be a unifying voice that could get America to come together. I would venture to say that most of those who voted for him did so not due to any policy but because of the charismatic image he showed. If he had been spouting Bush's policies or the speeches between him and McCain were reversed, he still would have won. Heck- he bashed many of Bush's policies and yet he still seems to be hanging onto them deciding that some of them that he spoke against, were not so bad after all.

Universal health care has been part of the Democratic platform for seventy years. Every Democratic president, and at least one Republican has tried to push it through. Do you think that just maybe, they might have a reason to try to do it. Health care for all was part of the hope and change I voted for. I know the pharmacuetical companies and the insurance corporations are against it and whipped up the opposition to it. Yes, it is sad that President Obama has not completely abandoned Bush's policies. Yes, he needs to close Gitmo, he needs to end the war in Afghanistan. Fight terrorism with law enforcement and enlightened social policy. And put in a real stimulus package that puts all Americans to work with massive infrastructure projects. I will keep trying.

Medicare/Medicaid are in a shambles, and are THE reason healthcare for people NOT in them is in shambles.

They've made a dogs lunch out of Social Security, and we have 1 out of 6 people in this country currently living on government largesse BEYOND those on Social Security. Meanwhile, we have 50% of the workforce paying not one red cent in income tax.

If you want European style nonsense in this country, there are OTHER parts of the European model that need to be enforced as well, including EVEYRONE pays taxes, immigration laws are strict AND enforced, and illegal immigrants are NOT allowed to participate in government funded programs. It is also worth noting that Europe is moving more towards our model, as we stupidly try to under Obama to move towards theirs.

The Democrats have at least an equal responsibility, more like two thirds, for all the points you listed. The majority of our "political leaders" have grown fat and complacent, and so have we. They want real immigration reform. They want to keep the illegals out, unless of course they want to hire them.

They want low taxes, for rich folks in particular.

They want a white President. They want to take their nation back, to where it was before they spent billions on two wars and an unfunded Rx drug program. They also want to take us back to a time when the whole world feared us, hated us, and no one respected us. They don't understand the difference between fear and respect.

Just to address that only- the balance was already well addressed. You might want to go out and read the book The Ugly American written in 1958. The poor image of Americans has been going on for years. Eddie, the problem with this particular crop of Democrats is they failed to see what swept them into control for what it was - a repudiation of Republicans big spending and big government.

They wrongly interpreted their massive gains in Congress and the election of Obama as a mandate for even MORE big government and big spending ala a nanny state.

This country being, overall, right of center and distinctly right on fiscal policy, did NOT want more of Bush and the Republicans (RINOs, most of them) big spending/big government.

But that's what they got.

When Democrats like Clinton get "centralized" by a truly fiscal conservative Congress, look what happens - six years of boom. When Democrats get dragged far left by their ideology and a president that shares it, look what happens? Massive rejection by the American people. When a RINO like Bush has RINO majorities, look what happens - massive rejection by the American people.

Obama's best hope for reelection in '12 is to get "Clintonized" by a Republican controlled Congress - as ironic as that is.

Just a note on your tax cuts for the wealthiest mantra - first off combined last year my wife and I grossed $50,000 for our family of 4. We did not pay any income tax on the first $35,000. If the Bush tax cuts are left to lapse we will see an increase in our federal income taxes of abour $2800. If you think we are the wealthiest you must be dirt poor.

Secondly, tax cuts absolutely do not cost the government anything because it's not their money to begin with. I earned it they didn't. They just don't get as much directly from the individual's pocket (paycheck). And if you go back and look at history you'll find that:

A) Revenues to the government actually increased more under the "Bush Tax Cuts" than at any other time in history

And B) No one has ever received a regular job or paycheck from a guy with no money. Which is what all the redistributionists want to create - more people with less money.

And I will continue to ask these two questions of guys like you until I actually get an answer -

How does it hurt you if someone else makes more money than you do?

How will it really affect you if someone else has more taken from them than is taken from you?

It always sounds like petty jealousy when I hear people say tax the rich they can afford it. Like they did nothing to earn it. You muyst feel you are entitled to keep more of what you make so why shouldn't they have the same opportunity?

And don;t give me the Warren Buffet / Bill Gates argument that they said tax the rich more - they've already got what they have so it really won'r affect them. My question for them would be - why didn't you just pay more if you felt so bad about it?

For someone at the Economic Policy Institute (federal budget policy analyst) to have not realized this was done during the Clinton years with NAFTA and free trade with out reciprical laws on their goods that they place on ours (yes a tariff) leads to the question of how long have you been there? People felt good during Clinton due to having more access to cheap goods from overseas which was ok when they were just making our Elmo toys, but once they expanded into other high value goods we stopped being amused and bought their product b/c it was cheaper, not realizing that the good / service that our neighbor provided was no longer being provided by the guy next door but by the guy across the ocean, and then we wondered why our neighbor didnt come into our store anymore and buy our stuff even when most of it says made in china or hencho en mexico, we were still an american owned store.

I was trying to explain this cause and effect back in high school 15 years ago and sadly I have been proven true. Buy American is a goal that I try for not because I'm a union member (I am but its for electricity, btw wind power is not the way of the future) but because it keeps you and your neighbors employed so you can buy the service that my company provides which in turn keeps me employed. Temporary lower prices on goods from outside your area will lead eventually to your job loss as nothing is recession proof or lasts forever, then your paying higher taxes on your income to sustain the neighbor that used to work in the factory that is now shuttered. That neighbor doesnt want to not be working its just no one was buying the slightly higher priced (and higher quality) item that they were producing when placed next to the item with the flashy packaging that was $.50 cheaper. Sorry about the rant but this is the place for rants, far down on a blog that will not be read again after about 3-4 days.

I appreciate the buy american slogan but sadly alot of the time that is not even possible anymore..you cannot buy a tv made here there are none. same for any other electronics..toys, mostly made overseas as is clothing, cars the american staple is going bankrupt and foreign cars are taking over the market. the trade deficits and tariffs need to be addressed before we can ever again "buy american"..good luck.

UPPower, it is a proven fact that when tax rates are lowered, more revenues are created. A huge majority of economists say that letting the tax cuts expire in a recession will only hurt more. Almost 900,000 small businesses will have their taxes increase when they expire. I'm sorry, but it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out if you own a small business and your taxes go up about 14% or at least $100,000 or more, you have to pay for it somewhere. Lay people off, do not hire anyone, no raises, etc.. In a recession, you just can't raise your prices to make up for more taxes. It will put them out of business. What to you and other people really think will happen if the government gets more money? They will spend it. Pure and simple. For every dollar that goes in to the federal government, we get a lot less out, since they have to hire more federal employees to monitor and spend the money. Privatization of SS is not going to make it go bankrupt. It should have been done when Bush was President. It would have extended SS by decades. The government earns 1% or less on SS in interest. What Bush proposed was privatizing and earning about 2% off of it, in safe investments and not high risk. When will people understand that SS will not last and will go bankrupt in 2037 or sooner? Medicare? Do you honestly think the dems can take over $500 billion out of Medicare? If they do, there is no way they can keep the same level of services. If they do not, the dems healthcare care costs will skyrocket. There are going to be hundreds of thousands of people taken off of Medicare and forced on to Medicaid. Thus, bankrupting the states. People just to not understand what the healthcare will do to us. Even max baucus, the senator said he did not read the healthcare bill and he was the senate sponsor. pelosi said that we have to pass the bill to know what is in it. Doesn't this scare people? Is this obama's transparency and campaign promise of not passing any bill without knowing what is in it?

Dont worry, as long as we dont elect a bunch of RINOS like Bush this time around we'll be just fine....

RVGIRL52, I can tell from your posts that you're bitter. The issue here isn't who did what when. It's the Democratic party separating themselves from Obama. Question 1, why would they be doing that? Maybe it's because they know the public as a whole doesn't support his agenda? Maybe they know that by supporting him they'll lose? Maybe they know they're facing big odds in Nov. and they have to save themselves? Whatever the reason, it's not Bush, Cheney, the Republicans, or anything like that. They know what they did and now it's time to face us.

Do some people make too much money? Yeah, I agree. For example the CEO of United Health Care makes about 102,000.00 AN HOUR! At one point a few years ago his salary alone accounted for $1 in every $700 spent on healthcare in America. Would you consider that a fair use of your healthcare premium? The difference is of course the customers of UHC cant vote the CEO out of his position, and they cant even choose another insurance provider if this is the one their employer likes. Talk about limited choice! At least Government Officials can be removed by their "customers".

Also, city taxes may be supplemented to allow for operations to continue when local taxes are insufficient to keep cities afloat. You should do a search to see how stimulus money is being used in your city before you complain about it.

Mayor Robert Correia said the eight jobs will be saved with about $600,000 in stimulus funding.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The communities in the Pioneer Valley are getting nearly $2 million thanks to the federal stimulus.
And this means more firefighters and cops patrolling the streets to make them safer. But there's no guarantee the money will be here next year.
In an effort to give fire and police departments a much needed shot in the arm, Governor Patrick announced the release of nearly $18 million state-wide to hire, rehire or retain 83 police officers in 35 departments and 105 firefighters in 85 departments.
Local aid cuts, stemming from state budget shortfalls created dangerous situations in cities and towns. But at least for now, that could be changing as public safety jobs are re-filled.

And all that did was kick the can down the road on a local, county and state level.

What happens next year when they STILL can't pay those people?

Hmmmm? Are we going to now have the Federal government subsidize everything, even more than they already do?

Why don't you get it? The public sector, no matter what their function, is bloated and unwieldly to the point that it is simply unaffordable and needs to shrink. This is mostly do to excessively generous and totally unsustainable 100% taxpayer funded pensions.

Which far too many public employees double dip on, getting ANOTHER public service job after retiring from one, then collecting a salary AND a pension.

Why is this okay? Doesn't this need to be dealt with at some point?
