IF you note, 33 million uninsured was just upgraded to 50 million via the census (I think). The 50 million is a fact. What is HCR??? 1. It shifts the expense of the uninsured from the public sector to the private sector. 2. It makes health insurance mandatory for everyone. You MUST buy it or be fined. 3. It does not control the rates that insurance companies can charge. How's a couple grand a month sound to you? 4. It does nothing to alleviate medical debt already incurred----you still owe that in addition to the premiums that you will pay. ummm….perhaps you should look at the current prison stats…40% of black males make up the prison population. I agree. The problem seems to be that politicians start running for re-election the day after they are elected to office by beating up the "other side". I don't know what the solution is - perhaps term limits would help.

I do, however, feel that Obama's obvious appeal for the politics of racial division is a poor strategy. He was elected as President of ALL the people, but by constantly trying to demonize the "other side", it just perpetuates the lack of cooperation.

There are many organizations and groups from young people, to women voters, to Hispanics, etc. It is common for candidates or the POTUS to speak to these groups, and it isn't racist or sexist or age discrimination - 'K'? Women voters have issues important to them, like the right to choose especially for rape/incest victims. Hispanics want immigration reform, and so forth. You may not agree with civil rights, or some of these other issues, but it does that mean others are racist or what have you.

The total for Bush's first 6 years was a $1,386.4 Billion Deficit, or $231 Billion per year. Now let's also add Bush's last 2 years;

2007 = $160.9 Billion Deficit

2008 = $458.6 Billion Deficit

Add them all up and you get $2.006 Trillion or $250.7 Billion/Yr average over 8 years. Those figures INCLUDE all spending for the wars in Iraq & Afghanistan.

Clinton's last fiscal year in office (2000) ended with a National Debt of $5.674 Trillion, and Bush's last fiscal year in office (2008) ended with a National Debt of $10.025 Trillion ($300 Billion in the last 2 weeks for TARP, mostly now repaid), an increase of $4.351 Trillion.

You make the common mistake of equating the Deficit with changes in the National Debt - they are not the same. For example, Clinton claimed Surpluses for 1998, 1999, & 2000 of $431 Billion, yet the National Debt for those same years INCREASED by $259 Billion, a "swing" difference of $690 Billion.

As for the so-called "budget tricks", the idea that the cost of the wars is not included in reported government expenditures is WRONG. While supplemental spending bills may not have been included in the original budget for each year, the estimated cost of the wars IS included, and ALL of the costs ARE included in the actual amounts spent each year (original budgeted amounts and supplemental amounts).

Let's just agree to disagree and allow the voters to decide in November.

Here is my projection of the Congressional results;

House of Representatives = Republicans win 60 seats (40 needed for control).

Senate = Republicans win 8 of the 18 Democratic seats up for election, but the Democrats will retain control because of the 2 independents that caucus with the Democrats. The 2012 elections are a different matter, however, because the Democrats and Independents will have 23 seats to defend, vs only 11 for the Republicans.

I'm curious if you have any projections, so we can compare results.

I have two comments on Clinton's so-called "Surplus";

1 - It's probably the result of the "funny accounting" by the government regarding how it treats money borrowed from the Social Security Trust Fund (the government considers it just another revenue source, instead of borrowed money). In every one of those "Surplus" years, the National Debt increased.

2 - It resulted from tight spending controls under a Republican Congress.

Ironic that there are Tea Party type comments here from the rabidly right wing saying Obama is racist because he is talking to a black audience right after Glen Beck was the right wing hero talking to a white audience. So Glen is not racist but Obama is?

Some right wingers have been throwing a tantrum from the first split second Obama was elected. What is the REAL Unemployment Rate?

The way that government calculates the Unemployment Rate is misleading, because it doesn't include people who want to work, but have given up trying for now until the jobs picture improves. So how do we calculate the REAL Unemployment Rate? Here's a clue;

In 2007 (the year the recession started), the average figures were as follows;

Total Labor Force = 153,124,000

Total Employed = 146,047,000

Total Unemployed = 7,077,000

Unemployment Rate = 4.6%

Economists estimate that the Total Labor Force increases by 125,000 each month due to normal population growth, which means that the REAL Total Labor Force is 153,124,000 PLUS 125,000 x 36 months = 157,600,000. Since the current Total Employed is now 138,687,143, the estimated REAL employment picture is as follows;

Total Labor Force = 157,600,000

Total Employed = 138,687,143

Total Unemployed = 18,913,000

Unemployment Rate = 12.0%

According to government employment records, the average number of people employed in 2007 (the year the recession started) was 146,047,000, and the average number of people employed in 2008 (Bush's last year) was 145,363,000, for a net loss of 684,000.

Those same government records show that the average number of people employed in 2010 ( thru 8/20/2010, the latest figures available) is 138,687,000, vs the average for Bush's last year in office of 145,363,000, for a net loss of 6,676,000 jobs.

These are figures from the government's own records.

These are merely the FACTS – You can draw your own conclusions.

It is nonsense for people to complain that President Obama is playing "the race card." Just as there are defined voting blocs for various religious interests, working interests, and so forth, so there is the African-American bloc. It is not racially monolithic, but there are indeed many shared intersts and influentials, and Obama would be derelict in his duty as leader of his party not to look for that advantage. It was certainly pursued the same way by past prsidential candidates and Presidents - each one of whom was WHITE, folks. Quit manufacturing garbage, please.

Before he'd served even one year President Obama lost the support of the easily distracted left and engendered the white hot rage of the hate-filled right. But some of us, from all walks of life and ideological backgrounds -- including this white, straight, 57-year- old, former religious right wing agitator, now progressive writer and (given my background as the son of a famous evangelical leader) this unlikely Obama supporter -- are sticking with our President.

Why?-- because he is succeeding.

We faithful Obama supporters still trust our initial impression of
him as a great, good and uniquely qualified man to lead us.
Obama's steady supporters will be proved right. Obama's critics
will be remembered as easily panicked and prematurely discouraged at best and shriveled hate mongers at worst.

The Context of the Obama Presidency

Not since the days of the rise of fascism in Europe, the Second
World War and the Depression has any president faced more
adversity. Not since the Civil War has any president led a more
bitterly divided country. Not since the introduction of racial
integration has any president faced a more consistently short-
sighted and willfully ignorant opposition - from both the right and left.

As the President's poll numbers have fallen so has his support from some on the left that were hailing him as a Messiah not long ago; all those lefty websites and commentators that were falling all over themselves on behalf of our first black president during the 2008 election.

The left's lack of faith has become a self-fulfilling "prophecy"--
snipe at the President and then watch the poll numbers fall and
then pretend you didn't have anything to do with it!

Here is what Obama faced when he took office-- none of which was his fault:

# An ideologically divided country to the point that America was
really two countries

# Two wars; one that was mishandled from the start, the other that
was unnecessary and immoral

# The worst economic crisis since the depression

# America's standing in the world at the lowest point in history

# A country that had been misled into accepting the use of torture
of prisoners of war

# A health care system in free fall

# An educational system in free fall

# A global environmental crisis of history-altering proportions
(about which the Bush administration and the Republicans had done nothing)

# An impasse between culture warriors from the right and left

# A huge financial deficit inherited from the terminally inept, irresponsible Bush administration.

And those were only some of the problems sitting on the
President's desk!

"Help" from the Right?

What did the Republicans and the religious right, libertarians and
half-baked conspiracy theorists -- that is what the Republicans
were reduced to by the time Obama took office -- do to "help" our
new president (and our country) succeed? They claimed that he
wasn't a real American, didn't have an American birth certificate,
wasn't born here, was secretly a Muslim, was white-hating "racist", was secretly a communist, was actually the Anti-Christ, (!) and was a reincarnation of Hitler and wanted "death panels" to kill the elderly!
They not-so-subtly called for his assassination through the not-so-
subtle use of vile signs held at their rallies and even a bumper
sticker quoting Psalm 109:8. They organized "tea parties" to sound
off against imagined insults and all government in general and
gathered to howl at the moon. They were led by insurance industry lobbyists and deranged (but well financed) corporate "commentators" from Glenn Beck to Rush Limbaugh.

The utterly discredited Roman Catholic bishops teamed up with the utterly discredited evangelical leaders to denounce a president who was trying to actually do something about the poor, the environment, to diminish the number of abortions through
compassionate programs to help women and to care for the sick! And in Congress the Republican leadership only knew one word: "No!"

In other words the reactionary white, rube, uneducated, crazy
American far right,combined with the educated but obtuse
neo-conservative war mongers, religious right shills for big
business, libertarian Fed Reserve-hating gold bug, gun-loving
crazies, child-molesting acquiescent "bishops", frontier loons and
evangelical gay-hating flakes found one thing to briefly unite them: their desire to stop an uppity black man from succeeding at all costs!

"Help" from the Left?

What did the left do to help their newly elected president? Some of them excoriated the President because they disagreed with the bad choices he was being forced to make regarding a war in Afghanistan that he'd inherited from the worst president in modern history! Others stood up and bravely proclaimed that the President's economic policies had "failed" before the President even instituted them! Others said that since all gay rights battles had not been fully won within virtually minutes of the President taking office, they'd been "betrayed"! (Never mind that Obama's vocal support to the gay community is stronger than any other president's has been. Never mind that he signed a new hate crimes law!)

Those that had stood in transfixed legions weeping with beatific
emotion on election night turned into an angry mob saying how
"disappointed" they were that they'd not all immediately been
translated to heaven the moment Obama stepped into the White House! Where was the "change"? Contrary to their expectations they were still mere mortals!

And the legion of young new supporters was too busy texting to pay attention for longer than a nanosecond. "Governing"?! What the hell does that word, uh, like mean?"

The President's critics left and right all had one thing in common:
impatience laced with little-to-no sense of history (let alone reality) thrown in for good measure. Then of course there were the white, snide know-it-all commentators/talking heads who just couldn't imagine that maybe, just maybe they weren't as smart as they thought they were and certainly not as smart as their president. He hadn't consulted them, had he? So he must be wrong!

The Obama critics' ideological ideas defined their idea of reality
rather than reality defining their ideas-say, about what is possible in one year in office after the hand that the President had been dealt by fate, or to be exact by the American idiot nation that voted Bush into office. twice!

Meanwhile back in the reality-based community - in just 12 short
months -- President Obama:

#Continued to draw down the misbegotten war in Iraq;
(But that wasn't good enough for his critics)

#Thoughtfully and decisively picked the best of several bad choices regarding the war in Afghanistan;
(But that wasn't good enough for his critics)

#Gave a major precedent-setting speech supporting gay rights;
(But that wasn't good enough for his critics)

#Restored America's image around the globe;
(But that wasn't good enough for his critics)

#Banned torture of American prisoners;
(But that wasn't good enough for his critics)

#Stopped the free fall of the American economy;
(But that wasn't good enough for his critics)

#Put the USA squarely back in the bilateral international community;
(But that wasn't good enough for his critics)

#Put the USA squarely into the middle of the international effort
to halt global warming;
(But that wasn't good enough for his critics)

#Stood up for educational reform;
(But that wasn't good enough for his critics)

#Won a Nobel peace prize;
(But that wasn't good enough for his critics)

#Moved the trial of terrorists back into the American judicial
system of checks and balances;
(But that wasn't good enough for his critics)

#Did what had to be done to start the slow, torturous and almost
impossible process of health care reform that 7 presidents had
failed to even begin;
(But that wasn't good enough for his critics)

#Responded to hatred from the right and left with measured good

#Stopped the free fall of job losses;
(But that wasn't good enough for his critics)

#Showed immense personal courage in the face of an armed and
dangerous far right opposition that included the sort of disgusting
people that show up at public meetings carrying loaded weapons and carrying Timothy McVeigh-inspired signs about the "blood of
tyrants" needing to "water the tree of liberty";
(But that wasn't good enough for his critics)
Other than those "disappointing" accomplishments -- IN ONE YEAR President Obama "failed"! Other than that he didn't "live up to
expectations"!

Who actually has failed...
...are the Americans that can't see the beginning of a miracle of
national rebirth right under their jaded noses.

Who failed are the smart ass ideologues of the left and right who began rooting for this President to fail so that they could be proved right in their dire and morbid predictions.

#Showed that he could not only make the tough military choices but explain and defend them brilliantly;
(But that wasn't good enough for his critics)

Who failed are the movers and shakers behind our obscenely dumb news cycles that have turned "news" into just more stupid entertainment for an entertainment-besotted infantile country.

Here's the good news: President Obama is succeeding without the
help of his lefty "supporters" or hate-filled Republican detractors!
The Future Looks Good

After Obama has served two full terms, (and he will), after his
wisdom in moving deliberately and cautiously with great subtlety on all fronts -- with a canny and calculating eye to the possible
succeeds, (it will), after the economy is booming and new industries are burgeoning, (they will be), after the doomsayers are all proved not just wrong but silly: let the record show that not all
Americans were panicked into thinking the sky was falling.

Just because we didn't get everything we wanted in the first short
and fraught year Obama was in office not all of us gave up. Some of us stayed the course. And we will be proved right.

what do you mean none of it his fault? He was a US Senator. He sure was "part" of all you listed or he could have propsed legislation to deal with the issues.

While there was conflict when the Republicans took over Congress under President Clinton in 1995, there was a great deal of cooperation as well, and we actually had several years of Budget Surpluses. I hope that something similar happens again.

I never intended to imply that the Republicans are blameless - I think they were all too willing to spend, spend, spend because it sounded like good politics, but it was certainly bad economics. There is no doubt that Obama inherited a bad economy, but my BIGGEST concern is the amount of debt that we are building up - which will dampen our children's and grandchildren's economic future for generations to come. Interest on the National Debt will soon change from a relatively manageable budget item to the largest single item within a few short years.

On December 1, the bipartisan Debt Commission is supposed to release its report - It will be really scary.

Think of those photos of Tea Party gatherings. How many non white faces did you see? Obama entered office trying to save our country from economic destruction. His mistake was thinking that saving this country was a priority to all that was in congress. He thought that he could work with both the Democrats and the Republicans because it was in America's best interest. He should have been right. Our nation was sinking fast and I did not think anybody could save it. The Republican party dumped the nation at it's worst state and expected it to fall, so they thought they would let a black man become president, so they could blame it all on him. Surprise, we are still fighting and slowly moving in a better direction without Republican help.

So, Obama made a mistake, he tried being bi-partisan. That was what the message around the country was. They wanted our government to work together. He did his part. The Democrats did their part. But, the Republicans had another agenda. They want our government to fail. They were listening to Rush Limbaugh. Rush said he hoped Obama failed. I guess the Republicans take their orders from money hungry Rush Limbaugh.

You are paying less in taxes since Obama took office than when Bush left office. Obama is fighting to keep your taxes low, but your Republican Senators are going to throw you under the bus so billionaires that dont need a tax cut gets them. If they get them, the national debt will get 1.8 trillion dollars added to it. They will blame that spending on Obama. They can only give the tax cut to them if they borrow the money. That is not reducing what we owe.

Republicans blocked jobs bills with filibusters and blamed Obama. They stop small businesses from getting loans to create jobs, and they blame Obama. They tell you lies in order to keep your votes. The Democrats are trying to stop these large corporations from shipping all of our good paying jobs overseas or to Mexico. The Democrats are the only ones fighting for the good people of America.

History shows us that our country has improved under a Democratic leader and fallen apart under Republican leadership. The last time we had a balanced budget, Clinton left office with over a $200 billion surplus. Did Bush do the logical fiscal thing and pay down on our $5 Trillion debt? NO. He had a party. He gave a rebate to taxpayers. Sounded great. The only thing he didn't tell you was the surplus paid the 1st year, and the next 9 years would have to be added to the national debt. Also while the lower 98% of us got a $600 check for each, he and his rich cronies and the other wealthy got over $100,000.00 each.

If we want to go back in history, then lets go back to Eisenhower's time, and make them pay 91% again. The more you give them, the more they want. How do they keep fooling you? This is not made up, it is fact. Try watching CNN, a reputable news organization that does indeed have integrity and fact checks their work. Beck left CNN because he has no integrity, and can make up all the lies he wants and doesn't have to answer to anybody at FOX. And if you are fat, Beck says he wishes you would die.

In all fairness to the people that voted for Obama, he presented himself with an eloquence that we have not seen in years.I will have to admit that I was equally taken in by him at first until I read his book, looked at the people that he was surrounding himself with, and then look at the totally biased news reporting that covered him 80% to 20% for McCain. After I started doing research (and no, I did not come to the conclusion that he was not a legitimate American citizen) I started to see a left leaning that was much, much more pronounced then what he was leading everyone to believe. The problem that was presented for me and most of my independent colleges was the fact that the person facing him was the definition of an Washington insider if I had ever seen one, but to be honest I did vote for him but walked away not feeling better, but rather that I had chosen the lesser of two evils.

Today I see the president and his followers, rather then admit that his plan has been such a failure that he had to fight for all he was worth, and make back door deals that was every bit as bad, if not worse then I have ever seen (even though he promised us that this would never happen and he would have a transparent government), even though he had a super majority with enough Democrats to pass his bills without one republican vote (this is for you that claim it was the republicans that stopped and obstructed him). In the end he and his Democrat colleges passed laws that were opposed by 70% of Americans, and then to make themselves feel superior decided to go the rout of calling us uneducated or just lacking the mental facilities to be able to know what is best for ourselves.

So now like it or not they are facing a back lash that I believe is equal or greater then what he had when he went into office. And rather then maybe come out and state that they have done things wrong, and they would work to fix it and do better (which might have been accepted by some Americans), he continued to attack and then make the electorate feel uneducated and unappreciated.

Unfortunately, the Republican icon has become Reagan, the president that started the renewed upward climb of the national debt to its current level in excess of 13 trillion dollars. The military industrial complex corporations now OWN the Republican Party and can be accurately described as Ron Pauls "corporatists" and neo conservatives advocating for the American Empire. Now we have the top 25 hedge fund managers making an average of one billion dollars each in the middle of a deep recession, despite the fact that many of them caused the recession with white collar crimes.

, who served as special assistant to the president from 2001 to 2003. A self-described conservative Christian, Kuo's previous experience includes work for prominent conservatives including former Education Secretary and federal drug czar Bill Bennett and former Attorney General John Ashcroft.

Kuo, who has complained publicly in the past about the funding shortfalls, goes several steps further in his new book.

He says some of the nation's most prominent evangelical leaders were known in the office of presidential political strategist Karl Rove as "the nuts."

"National Christian leaders received hugs and smiles in person and then were dismissed behind their backs and described as 'ridiculous,' 'out of control,' and just plain 'goofy,'" Kuo writes.

More seriously, Kuo alleges that then-White House political affairs director Ken Mehlman knowingly participated in a scheme to use the office, and taxpayer funds, to mount ostensibly "nonpartisan" events that were, in reality, designed with the intent of mobilizing religious voters in 20 targeted races.

Nineteen out of the 20 targeted races were won by Republicans, Kuo reports. The outreach was so extensive and so powerful in motivating not just conservative evangelicals, but also traditionally Democratic minorities, that Kuo attributes Bush's 2004 Ohio victory "at least partially to the conferences we had launched two years before."

In fact, when Bush asks Kuo how much money was being spent on "compassion" social programs, Kuo claims he discovered the amount was $20 million a year less than during the Clinton Administration.

The money that was appropriated and disbursed, however, often served a political agenda, Kuo claims, with organizations friendly to the administration often winning grants.

More pointedly, Kuo quotes an unnamed member of the review panel charged with rating grant applications as saying she stopped looking at applications from "those non-Christian groups," as did many of her colleagues.

Doesn't matter which party is "elected" to control the House and Senate. They have their own destructive agenda which neither will stabilize the economy. Neither party can keep "the train on the Republic track". No matter which party wins, it is going to be too little, too late, for this country.
