I'm your huckleberry. A study reported by the NY Times a couple of years back determined that for every $2 an illegal immigrant cost this country, they contributed $3. Now that's not strictly tax dollars in and out. It also considers what illegal immigrants contribute to the local economy and the small businesses they patronize while they are here. Also, as a source of cheap labor they make otherwise unaffordable services, affordable to lower and middle income Americans, thus allowing those Americans to spend more money on domestically manufactured goods. All of this, plus other factors make it difficult to determine, if not impossible to determine the actual cost/benefit of illegal immigrants in America.

Certainly, "obligation" is an odd word for this woman to use, and we are getting it out of context. Can anyone here be certain as to what she precisely meant? I offer that her point may very well have been this, "if you are going to let me stay, then shouldn't you allow me citizenship too?

Okay look. I have these palm trees in my back yard, and they need trimming pretty regularly. I’m too old to be getting up on the extension ladder and doing that myself, so I have to hire someone. If I hire the all-legal landscaping service, I will have to pay $300 to have it done. I don’t have that kind of money. So I use a guy who does it for $50. (Since he doesn’t speak English, I assume he is not a legal citizen.)

So, I have a choice. I can pay $300 for the “legal” landscapers ($250 of which no doubt goes towards paying for the owner’s Mercedes, or his million dollar house), and accept some debt, or I can pay the illegal guy $50. Most of that will go towards his groceries and rent, and the money I saved I can use on groceries, perhaps a modest dinner out with the wife, and maybe a couple of plants from Home Depot to help improve the value of my home. The local economy benefits.

Besides, since the crash, the number of illegal workers here in Arizona has dropped off precipitously. Even today, there is little if any competition for cheap labor jobs. If you can find me an American citizen that is willing to trim my palms for $50, I’ll hire him. But trust me. It ain’t gonna happen.

In the countries that most undocumented immigrants come from, there is rampant poverty and no hope of a job or school or even basic medical care. I think this says it all...it used be be that families took care of their own...I know in my family if any of them became disabled, homeless etc through no fault of their own I would make sure they had a place to live and food to eat...even if I had to make sacrifices to do it.

Families should take care of their families. When my parents both had strokes we moved them to where we live and took care of them until they passed. When my wife's Mom needed help, we helped her financially and medically. Fortunately she is still with us. It hurt our household financially and stressfully, but it's what we did. If I had a millionaire nephew with a nice salary and a fantastic retirement plan, I would hope he would help me if I was in dire straits. And I have to admit if I was President and had an aging aunt looking at forced deportation, I would look to do everything possible legally to help her stay in the US. I'm honest about that. But in this case she should have been deported long before her nephew became POTUS and she should not be receiving any state or federal subsitence.

If elderly, I would certainly be glad to help research options for them. But wouldn't feel compelled to become an orphanage, lest it become expected, then demanded.

Sue, it seems like we are already supporting most of the countries in one way or another. Then we don't do anything about people coming here illegal and costing us millions. Not only that, it frightens me to see that Mexican criminals come here, we see it on webcams, and we do nothing! We just let the keep coming and killing our citizens, go figure that one out.
