We need elimination of department type of cuts. Republicans just dont get it. They got in at 1994 and became in many ways bigger tax and spenders than the Democrats were at the time. The DoD budget doubled to nearly a trillion dollars after Bush got a hold of it. WE NEED CUTS DUDES! If you get hired you need to cut and cut deep. I would like to see you budget the federal government to 75% of the 2000 budget after the Clinton Administration completed its cuts by force of the that republican congress. Then use the remaining 25% to put towards debt.

If you want hero status, you need to take out programs, agencies and departments that deal with domestic issues and where these entities have covaerage by the states. Any program that has a "customer" needs to be privatized immediately. Services to be paid fully by that "customer" and not tax payers. The multiple pay systems needs to be contracted out with no paper statements being MAILED to federal employees (WASTE!!!!!) Make feds pay for most of their glorious benefits (YOU KNOW THESE GUYS ONLY PAY 1/8th of their pensions!!!!!) and pay less than half of what we pay for social security. And pay only 1/6th of thier health bennies! And this is the NEW package (FERS)! The old one (CERS) is even more offensive! And they complain they have it so bad!

There is so much that can be done to cut government - but you are not seeing in their proposal. I still will take Dem light - but in November 2012, if there is a better offer still, these guys will be out as well!

Reveiw Chapter 1, Sub-Chapter 'S' in the Internal Revenue Code. It cites "S Corporations", a clause that allows Mega-Corporations to not file any income taxes at all. Instead, these corporations can filter these earnings or losses down through their share-holders, who then can file these gains or losses as individuals.

Because this income is filed by "individuals", they are not a matter of public record, so nobody really knows - it can't be traced.

When John Boehner and the Republicans parade "small business owners" in front of the public, that includes these "share-holders" that are technically "owners" of the Corporations, but as "individuals", referenced as "small business owners" per the Republicans.

These "tax cuts" don't include the owner of the three Mr. Softee trucks patroling your neighborhood.

Americans have been snookered. "S Corporations" - google it.

Justgetitright-look into that bill of rights a little closer. It's not unlawful search and seizure. There's a provision that allows the government to search anything that enters or exits the country. And that is what they are doing. They are not wiretapping someone talking from Kentucky to Nebraska. They are wiretapping people calling suspected terrorist groups out of the country. It's legal, it's been ruled legal by judges that Clinton put in power. Move on.

You want to balance the budget and fix the deficit. How will you do that? Do not say "cut spending", tell me EXACTLY what you will cut. Social security? Medicare? Law Enforcement? Education?

I have heard GOP and Tea Party candidates say that they will cut taxes. GREAT . . . but how will this balance the budget? How will less taxes help the deficit? Are you going to cut EVEN MORE spending so that you can cut taxes? Ok, GREAT . . . again, what will you cut?

Republicans and Tea Party members want to increase border security. Cool, I agree. But now you are adding MORE spending. So how will you pay for it? You just said "cut spending", but now you are adding. Where is the money coming from? What MORE will you cut to support this?

The healthcare bill will save $178 billion, but the GOP and Tea Party want to repeal it. What will you cut to save an equal amount? AGAIN . . . what will you cut?

There are ideas to gain additional tax revenue, WITHOUT increasing taxes. (1) We can legalize pot and collect the taxes from that . . . GOP does NOT want to do that. So no extra tax revenue from that. (2) We can allow gays to marry and gain the revenue from marriage certificates and divorce fillings . . . GOP does NOT want to do that. So ANOTHER idea for extra tax revenue shot down. Does the GOP and Tea Party have ANY other ideas for extra tax revenue? Anything? Any idea at all?

So to recap: The GOP and Tea Party want to balance the budget by (1) cutting taxes for the rich, (2) cut spending on "something", but they can not tell us what, (3) increase spending on security, (4) repeal savings on the healthcare bill, and (5) refuse tax revenue from legalization.

Where is the logic? How will any of that balance the budget? If you can give me a logical plan that proves how you will balance the budget, I will vote with you. Just give me a plan. Show me what you will do.

Oskar, I am not sure you can be serious. All of a sudden, the national debt is a big deal. Where was this concern when the gop kept spending and spending with no stoppage in sight? Where were the fiscally responsible republicans when this country went to war, which was unfunded? Where was the outcry from the right during the economic downturn that led to the final fall in 2007? No body wanted to stop the Wall Street thugs from making money, certainly not the gop who is in big favor with that party.

Hey cali - don't believe you for a second. Here's why. When in debt trouble, go to debt cousellors. This is what they will tell you:

1. Put down the shovel and stop digging - you will never get out of debt if you don't stop adding to it.
2. spend only that money which you absolutely must. Buying a car that will get the job done for the least - not like health care where the order of the day was mandate items that will increase the costs.

1920 -1922 was a deep depression, deeper than the great depression. Woodrow Wilson had increased the federal budget by a factor of eight, raised taxes, and then still ran up deficits - something not done for any of the previous 3 administrations.

Warren G Harding took office January 1921 and cut spending by about 1 Billion. Then in 1920 he and congress produced a budget that was 60% of the 1920 budget and cut taxes. Depression went away months and we began the roaring 20's.

Today we could never cut the budget to 60%. 75 - 85% of the Budget is military, debt service AND Social (entitlement programs). Just to let you know - Rome Crumble withing from "Entitlements" to the Roman citizens - so they never had to work. Their wealth was coming from the conquered territories. Because they didn't have to serve in the military and were "soft" from not having to work or fight, they could not defend themselves and fell.

Do you want to be America, where wih hard work anything is possible, or like Rome that fell appart. Your position tells me - Rome is just fine!

• De-Fund the Health Care Bill - Employers are experiencing 20 - 32% increases because of the elimination of the "lifetime maximum payouts" and pre-existing condition rules. Your Health insurance may well be negotiated by and employer, but you should be taking it with you. This eliminates 99% of pre-existing condition issues. What insurance companies did to make health insurance affordable is choose a lifetime maximum that the majority of people would not exceed - now they have to charge enough to cover for the maximum coverage anyone would face.
• Replace the Bush Tax cuts with somewhat deeper cuts. Once people start feeling like they are losing ground they will begin to spend.
• Dept of Education - this agency is a federal repeat of what states already do. We already have testing places that do statistical tracking. NOTE - our education system was supposed to improve with this agency - improve it has not.
• Department of Energy - Re-make it so that it actually encourages new energy sources instead of standing in the way of both the new and the existing.
• Reform Freddie and fanny to resonable terms. We have swung from forcing them to make loans they would not with to make to regulation so tight that business doesn't bother
• Pull the claws and fangs on the EPA. It has become all-powerful. When congress failed to enact Cap & Trade, it unilaterally declared carbon a hazzardous material that it is going to regulate without the consent of the American People. This agency single handedly has prevented higher fuel economy engines to come to the US INCREASING out dependence on foreign energy. For years it has promoted the use of anti-polution substances that poison our air and water. Worse yet these substances were more expensive than what is used in Europe.
• Institute a maximum Annual pay raise of 1/2 the inflation rate to ALL Federal wages for people who are making 1.5 - 2X (EXCEPT the Military) what a private sector person of the same responiblity and work makes. Politicians cannot receive a pay raise until the Federal on-budget is balanced WITHOUT raising taxes. That means NO increase in the national debt either to fake a balanced budget as was done from 1999 - 2001

If you haven't read the Pledge yet, I suggest you do. And really READ what is written there. I'll grant you, they have a masterful copywriter, but the substance ranges from hollow to frightening. There is nothing in the Pledge about how Republicans are going to balance the budget and pay down debt (even though they take credit for doing so under the Clinton Administration). They claim that they will maintain entitlement programs (social security, medicare, medicaid) and spend heavily on defense.

So let's look at the logic of this.

Mandatory spending (social security, medicare, medicaid, interest on the debt, etc) is $2.184 Trillion. Defense is $665 Billion. Just those items (and no other govt programs like Transportation, Education, Veterans Affairs, etc) equals $2.8+ Trillion. Our CURRENT tax revenue is about $2.4 Trillion.

So how are Republicans going to cut taxes further AND still balance the budget AND pay down debt?

They are not being honest with themselves or the American public on what is needed to balance the budget and pay down debt. They are simply playing on people's anger and fear.

Jim: The democrats have put in policies that have kept unemployment about 9.5% for almost two years. It's apparent that they are the ones who could care less about people working. It's amazing how your argument is put to pasture as soon as you start using facts.

You do realize that had the current administration not made some effort to fix the failed policies of the eight prior years that the unemployment rate in the United States would be substantially higher, correct? No one on either side of the political divide is claiming that 9.5% unemployment is a good thing, however, from a realtive perspective, maintaining a 9.5% unemployment rate when there was great potential for it to rise much higher is, I think, the more agreeable scenario, albeit still not a great one. Returning the party to power that was responsible for the majority of poor decisions leading to the United States' economic crisis does not compute.

Very interesting, lot of truth in that statement. Also, an interesting side note regarding wealth in this country, eliminating or allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire, and how they would effect "small" business. 3% of those classified as "small" business have over 50% of the revenue of all business. An example of a "small" business.....Bechtel Engineering...$31 BILLION dollars of revenue last year with over 40,000 employees, primarily from NO BIDcontracts doled out by our government. The classification of "small" business isn't the SIZE of the company, but how and by whom it is OWNED. With that much revenue and primarily from OUR pockets, damn right those five to ten owners making over $250k should be paying higher taxes! Of course Bechtel does pay lobbyists over $10 Million Dollars a year to persuade our government to give them our really hard earned money.

Hampster - there is no dispute that the health care plan has benefits, some of the most important points you have touched on. Why does obama and congress have to use over 2000 pages to sell the plan? How much simpler would the health care plan be if the earmarks were removed and the members of congress just voted on the merits of the bill rather than what they can personally get out of it. The Mexican illegal still won't get insurance through Obamacare, and when he, his wife, or his baby get sick they go to the ER. Again, YOU pay this bill via YOUR healthcare premiums.

The guy in CA with AIDS who doesn't have insurance, ends up dying slowly in the ER or some hospital room. Since he doesn't have insurance, YOU end up paying for it in YOUR premiums.

This is called reality, it's already how the system works. As I said before, and I'm not incorrect in stating this, "YOUR PREMIUMS ALREADY DID PAY FOR EVERYONE ELSE WITHOUT INSURANCE." At least by giving them some coverage, they may contribute something in premiums (even if it's a pittance) and their overall healthcare expenditures throughout their lifetime with routine checkups tend to, on average, be less (e.g., it's cheaper to fight cancer when it's caught early then when it's already terminal).

I may not like providing insurance for freeloaders, but if given the option, i'll always choose to pay premiums for them versus paying their ER bills (right now we pay the ER bills). The overall cost is cheaper.

2) the cost of inefficient and massive government bureaucracy to administer what is now 2,309 pages of the bill and approximately double that in related regulations coming out

HRDawg : S-corporations are the corporation type of the majority of small businesses in the United States. My current employer is a s-corporation with around 40 employees. The ownership (in this business) is divided between three people who the finances of the business flow through. The benefit of S-corporations is that it is called single taxation. Yes, S-corporations do not pay federal income tax, the shareholders (in my case the 3 owners) pay the federal income tax personally for the business (which is usually paid by the company writing a check to the owner or adjusting the owners pay to cover the expected tax bite by year end - meaning the business is paying the taxes indirectly).

S-corporations have to meet several requirements to be S-corporations. You seemingly didn't realize this - first, the business can only have one type of share/stock, and second that the business has 100 or less shareholders. This is very important because you can have different types of stocks for businesses - but these are automaticly not elligible to be S-corporations. On top of that- small businesses tend to have less than 100 shareholders (much less), but some small businesses are employee owned (or share in ownership) and thus the number was set at 100.

C-corporations are basically all the rest of the corporations that don't meet S requirements. In addition, it is important to know that S-corporations can become C-corporations, but C-corporations can not change back to S (even if they meet the requirements). Again the benefit of being an S-corporation is that the money made from the business is only taxed ONCE - the business doesn't pay the federal income tax, the owners do (which the business typically covers in some form of payment).

We have death panels right now. I have a good friend with cancer and the doctors had a meeting and said he was too old for them to approve an operation that could extend his life by perhaps another 5 years.

You don't have to be dying for end of life counseling. It is making your wishes known so at the end of your life, they-the doctors, you family etc-follow your wished rather than their own.

Alot of people already have these things set up-living wills, DNR's (do not resusitate) and other directives. This helps your family who may be grieving not thinking about what you want but rather thinking about that they don't want to lose you regardless of the fact that you might be suffering.

End of life counseling gives YOU the choice to decide what you want. You put on paper that you want to be kept alive no matter what then it is clear that that is what you want no family fighting (remember the Schiavo case?)

Jon Stewart actually had on a lady who was claiming there were death panels in the legislation. They both read the text together from the bill. It pretty much said "there shall not be" and went on to describe what I understood as death panels. It was right there, but the lady kept claiming that by saying "shall not" it meant shall.

In the law itself there will be appointed a board which will decide what medical procedures to cover and what perscriptions it will cover. Do you agree that these boards/commisions/panels will be established by the Health Care law or do you think any charge submitted will be paid for?

Absolutely Frankusa, I am glad to cite John Stewart and the Daily show whenever they present something as fact. The point is the legislation was actually read on his show. By the language of what was read I don't believe the new health care bill allows for death panels.

Paul F nailed it in 4.27. For decades, there have been people deciding who will get life-saving treatment and who won't based on a budget. Unfortunately, budgets have to be met - and I'm not deliberately tossing a slow pitch for someone to comment on how well Congress has stayed within its budget for the last 30 years.

I'm not sure why this would bother anyone whether its in HCR or not. Pretending that every life-saving treatment can be administered is unrealistic. Yes, I would be depressed if someone in my family or one of my friends were denied life-saving treatment regardless of the decision coming from insurance or the government. But hopefully I would see the bigger picture.

As masteroftheobvious has noted, and Paul F has stated in 4.27 - there are and will continue to be the proverbial death panel involved in health care. There is a difference though between today and what will come. For those who have decided to take the bare bones most literal interpretation of "death panel" - yes, you can clearly say that there will be no such thing. However, if you take the blinders off and read the bill carefully you will find that at a certain age, the bill requires people regularly meet with a panel to discuss current health issues, the treatments for any issues, and the quality of life beyond these treatments.

On the surface, this sounds like a good thing - but when you see what the panel is composed of you find that it's not comprised of solely doctors. These panels are suppose to weigh the cost of treatment versus years of life left for the patient and make medical descisions. This is where the "death panel" interpretation comes from.

Back to today - insurance companies cover patients and have to follow their contract with their client. Contracts are pretty standard these days but there are some big differences in coverage that change the cost and value of ones insurance. In the end, if the insurance company covers the condition, you tend to be covered for the treatment. Furthermore, hospitals are obligated to a list of "emergency" conditions that they treat regardless of insurance, money, or nothing. Hospitals do have the right to reject perform optional treatments/operations, but that is as far as it goes. The death panels of today really boil down to the depth of ones relationship with their insurance and personal wealth which to me... is a hell of a lot better than hoping the government can run a program well enough to cover people (which historical it has failed miserably every time).

He is worth a little over 200 mil or so and he employes around 1,400 people. He is all the time investing in the company before the recession hit he bought 3 new plants and if his funds are cut then I am sure that is going to affect future aquistions. Our Biggest Customer is also a privately owned business that gentleman has 3 plants in the USA and employees around 700 people, he is also worth several Million dollars and would be affected by the democrats and therefore affect the working class. The community reinvestment act was passed in 1977. So you are saying it was so bad but it took 30 years (the length of most people's mortgages) to effect the economy???

The Bush tax cuts were idiotic. In the history of all goverments, not one time has any government cut taxes during wartime. How can you increase military spending and cut taxes? The government has less money coming in and has a lot more expenses.

Banks gave loans to people that could not afford them. Hell the banks didn't check to see if people even had jobs, or anyway to even pay them back. Yes the government wanted people to buy homes but I don't think they had this in mind. It is one thing to not have great credit for one reason or another (medical bills, etc). But when you think you can buy a house for 1 million dollars and you make 30k a year, there is something wrong with the buyer. There are plenty of people that could have gotten mortgages (even people with good credit) that knew they could not afford to buy house and didn't.

Why did they do this because they knew they would be selling this debt anyway . . . It is as simple as that GREED!!! Wall street (mostly conservatives not liberals) wanted in on this and created some bogus way to sell these sub-prime mortgages (mortgage back securities) with AAA ratings as safe. This definitely a bogus statement...when the capital gains tax dropped lower than net corporate income taxes it eliminated the incentive to invest in domestic capital manufacturing, both in the sense of equipment and in additional labor because the barrons of industry, the fund managers, and the rich elite no longer needed a way to fend off diminishing returns due to a progressive tax structure. They could off shore their manufacturing costs, maximize profits, leech off the remaining wealth of what is left of the middle class. Of course the only jobs that they produce are when they hire an illegal to cut their grass...they do not produce jobs in America. Why should they? That would take cash out of their pockets.

As to the previous admin, they did a little of both: increasing spending and the size of government and reducing taxes. Two things that initially were a good idea but should have been reversed once the economy recovered in 2004. Continuing the policy of low taxes actually made available huge amounts of money to invest. Thus the stock market and real-estate market bubbles. Poor oversight was not the cause of the real-estate bubble, cash was.

Given the choice between a handout for the uber wealthy and the poor or middle class, I choose the latter. Yes, it would benefit me personally, but I also know it would provide more jobs and help more of my neighbors than any other proposal.

1.) the D's took control in 2007, not '06
2.) Economies take years to build (especially bubbles), so considering the first signs of the meltdown started in the summer of 2007 it's a stretch to say the D's caused it. They only had "power" for a couple of months at that point, way too short of a time period to have any real effect on the economy at large.
