Voters have typically made up their mind at this time. Vote changes this close to a major election only happen when a major news event occurs which changes the way we live. There have been announcements - such as economy and employment and foreclosures - which have been bad news. But, not enough to change voters.

Occam's Razor you are probably right, but all the polls show a large amount of "Undecided" out there. Maybe people just don't want to answer when asked. I made up my mind and mailed in my ballot already and interestingly enough I voted mostly Republican except for the 50th district race here in San Diego County. Studies over the years have shown that in major elections, the Undecided tend to follow the Known vote forecast - with a variance a little bigger than the polling error for that particular election. Thus, if a polling shows a 55/45 forecast, the Undecideds will typically follow the same forecast.

What throws this off? An unhappy voter. Unfortunately, the past few years include a large number of voters that are voting AGAINST a person, rather than FOR a person. In this case, the Undecided will still follow the expected pattern, with a bigger margin for error. (That should make the mud hole a little clearer)

The LA Times makes a good point: Palin's approval ratings are up to 43% from 40% in July (with one poll currently giving her a 47% favorability rating), while Obama's have slipped to 48%. It's possible both Obama's and Palin's approval ratings will be about equal in the very near future.

Occam's Razor - Studies when taken as whole show what you said to be true. When they are seperated out to the mood of the voters a different story emerges. On a status quo election or the happy with those in charge is proceding, a larger portion than average vote for the one who is ahead. On an angry voter election which this one and the last one were, the incumbent polling with less than 50% in the last two weeks most likely will see a much larger undecided break for the challenger.

The US Constitution was a response to the toothless Articles of Confederation that was formed as a knee-jerk reaction to the strong dictatorial Central Government of England. The country was on the verge of Civil war started by states levying Tariffs on each other.

The constitution was written by both basically Federalists (Pro big, powerful government believers) and Democratic-Republicans (By the people - small government). The Federalist party crashed in a matter of years because people did not want that strong of a government. liberal at that time meant limited government and freedom from government interference.

The Democratic-Republican party split into Three parties.

1. The Republicans (compromisers - didn't last long).
2. Democratic Party (Andrew Jackson Democrats). They wanted a strong Federal government, and particularly in the south were the big supporters of slavery. for years they successfully manuvered congress to keep enough states admitted to the Union to be designated as slave states.
3. The National Republicans (Limited Government and liberty for all) - Became the Whigs - which when they Fell apart because of in-fighting and losing power in Congress in 1850, the remnants formed the Republican party

Being a governor is actually the best training for a president, since they actually have to run an entire government which typically has similar agencies as a counterpart to each Federal agency. It requires real executive experience and an ability to delegate. That's why Reagan was such a successful President, after serving 2 terms as California Governor.

Senators, by contrast, don't run anything, and are just 1 of 100 Senators that merely vote on bills. No executive experience required.

wrkrb, the problem with your concept of change is that change does not need a time frame. We all are exposed to accidental change, health issues, job issues, family status issues. The real leader has something called contingencies to eliminate or minimize the negative impacts of anticipated change. None of this seems to exist in this administration, its almost as if it were planned by someone who never thought through the potential impacts. By the way, when everything is changing, it is chaos not change.

This administration uses change as a weapon, change for change sake only. And that is why there is fear in this country, fear of this administration, fear of this president's and his ideas. To minimize the fear factor, the change must be explained. This administration does it the other way, the pass legislation then try to explain it and when they can't the natural reaction is to fear what Congress and the White House is doing.

The stimulus raised between 1.4-3.3 million jobs. That's a 1.9 million margin of error. That's a good one. How about "we just don't know what any of it did"? That'd be closer to the truth. BO prevented a depression---really----for sure----or we just don't really know. I'll say this for the zillioneth time. In the '82 recession, unemployment peaked at 10.8%, inflation hit 14.76%, and the prime rate, the mortgage rate, hit 21.5%. Those are exact figures taken from the records. The foreclosure rate may be higher now than it was than, but with 21.5% interest, how many homes got sold. If BO did, Reagan surely did also. 9 days to go---see ya at the polls.

The true unemployment figures are more like 20%. The government is not reporting the Americans that have exhausted their funds or people that are not eligible from the start. Also, you have to take into account the average filing for unemployment each month has been around 95,000. There were 420,000 temporary Census positions filled, that is in that count. This country is going down quickly, because big business does not know what to do since Obama doesn't know what he is going to do next. This came out last week during the meeting with big corporations as well as small businesses. Small businesses are going to hurt drastically.

Have you even torn yourself away from youTube long enough to watch your local news? 60 Minutes aired an excellent piece on the 99ers tonight. The sheer desperation of the unemployed who have lost everything is heart wrenching. And most did everything right - but still are now truly living on the edge.

Whether these people were laid off at the end of the Bush years or during the past almost 2 years of the Obama Administration -- NONE of them ever dreamed that they wouldn't be able to find a new job within six months!! The majority of these workers had at least a college degree or a Masters (a few even a PhD) - and were not in "outsourced" manufacturing or labor jobs. WHAT they did have most in common (other than being college grads) was that they are over 45 years old.

Anyone who was even conscious already knows that Obama inherited a huge mess. No one expected him to fix everything in 2(0) months. What most folks did hope for - was that they would at least be able to see a ray of light at the end of the tunnel. "The recession ended" is a nice (supposedly) feel-good sound bite -- but it doesn't resonate with REALITY.

Alex, In Jan., 2009 the DJIA was 8,000. You need to read your own chart correctly. I use CNBC Money and it says the same thing. In Oct., 2007, the DJIA hit a high of 14,164 and in Dec., we were in a recession. In the last 5 weeks, the DJIA increased 1,000 points. Why? They anticipate a Republican shift in congress. If it doesn't happen, it'll drop back down again. BO doesn't have a handle on unemployment and his GDP growth is anemic. He spent 800 billion in stimulus money and has very little to show for it. You can read my 2.31 above. You have to come to the table with much more than he's showing to say "I turned it". He's still trying to bust the bank. His spending hasn't stopped yet.

A couple facts. The census occurs every 10 years, BO was the recipient of that. Xmas season is here now and they'll be hiring 600,000 seasonal workers, as they did in 2009. I was laid off, along with many others, from a government job, in June. I'm nearly 62, not hot stuff on the job market, even a good job market. When I was laid off, my health insurance ended. Now I try to pay $380 per month to keep it going. I have to because at my age no new insurance company will look at me. HCR? Bring it on!

Not to mention that the overall costs of health insurance and health care in genreal are skyrocketing under Obamacare. You will be very happy to know that with your wonderful "HCR" you will likely be paying over $500 and moving toward about $1000 for the insurance you are required to have.

And your "wonderful" HCR will only cost taxpayers $2 trillion (actually much more since the government always underestimates such numbers) over the next several years. That will work out to about $15,000 to $20,000 per taxpaying adult. (Of course you won't have to pay any of that as long as you are not employed so no need to concern yourself with that-------for now.)

After more than 50 years to come up with a solution, after taking out the Public Options and instating the mandatory pay the Republicans asked for, the best the Republicans had to offer as a HCR idea was to scrap everything and start all over. Go back to where they were 50 years before with health care. I would have signed it without any pause as well. Though I tried to find a reason to defend it against those who talking point this to death, I have to say, I find this HCR Bill to be the only thing Tea Partiers and Right Wingers and I agree on; this needs to be repealed. But a reformed, bipartisan bill must be ready to be put in its place.

The current bill has done nothing but allow Big Insurance to ratchet up the Cost Increases at an unbridled rate. Obviously there is something being gained by not including preventative measures against the Big Insurers. Just Like Bushbama's TARP.

I am the first to say that Palin was a terrible choice for McCain to choose as running mate. At the time, he was like 3 or 4 points behind in the polls. Actually, he was closing the gap and possibly could have won with a viable running mate. All I can guess (yes, just a wild guess) is that he thought something like a woman, unknown, could spark his campaign, and there is always that politician ego where he does not want to be upstaged by the #2.

Having said that, I think it is a very big mistake for the Republicans to he holding Palin up as a top choice. But she is the only one out there making any noise. All the other viable candidates are keeping all their cards down, for now.

Hopefully, some of them will emerge soon and get the campaign to get rid of Obama actually rolling.

And having said that, although Palin is not a viable candidate in my opinion, she, or any other simple caring American citizen would be 10,000 times better than Obama as POTUS.

It is the normal economic cycle that you get an economic downturn once every 8 to 10 years. you know, the banks that lent the money, the banks that evaluated the risk, the banks that chopped up the mortgages and sold them to other banks who didn't know WTF they were buying who consulted with the ratings agencies who pumped the estimates and got those banks to further slice and dice those mortgages into infinitesimally tiny chunks - so small that nobody even knows who owns the @!$%#ing things anymore - the banks that are now foreclosing on homes they don't own because they've hired burger flippers to sign documents claiming they've reviews documents they don't have... all in the name of ever-higher profits based on nothing but bigger and bigger bets on nothing but their own @!$%#ing greed.

It explains the problem which began with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and Frank and Dodd's manipulation of those institutions which ultimately poisoned the banking system (which was, admittedly, a house of cards). No two individuals did more to cause the crash than Frank and Dodd. The democrat propaganda machine with the help of the press that they control have managed to brainwash a lot of left wing zealots into blaming it all on the banks. It just doesn't compute.

Frank and Dodd didn't force anyone to come up with the idea of the mortgage-based CDO or to leverage them into vapor. the banks did that all by themselves.

If the banks are to blame it has absolutely nothing to do with the housing market that crippled this nation. It was with their backing of the oil speculators that raped the world with the help of the banking industry that supported these crooks who's tankers were their hard drives and their processors chips were their refineries. Without the banks supporting these criminals that took advantage of the war and false inflated oil prices, most of those mortgage defaults would never have happened in the time frames they did.

Those banks were not forced to make bad loans. The greedy pigs made money if one note was paid. They were gambling that home prices would rise and they would get the outher half of the country. The schems they used with those morgages would put a normal citizen in jail. So, when housing went down and they lost, we gave the thieves 750 billion. Both parties fought against the public to save their stocks that were tanking. As soon as they got the money they stole 18 billion for bonuses, to keep the brightest and the best is what they told us. We don't know how much more they stole because their was no oversight.

Heres part of what we do know. Banks have a license to steal and they do.When you pay 600k or more for a 200k home even when the government guarntees the loan you have been robbed. In the last two years our 4 biggest banks have gained over 3 trillion in assets. they are right now recieving billions in 0% loans and speculating with taxpayer and depositers money. Talk about something for nothing! They produce nothing an take mountains. Keeping cash flow liquid is what they were ment to do; but they are not doing that. Right now it is difficult for well qualified people to get a loan. So, the banks own our government and just spent over 30 billion lobbying against a very moderate reform bill. Banks,wall street and big corporations are running America and their insane greed is destroying us. If you think Dodd or anyone else made them do anything i believe you are badly mistaken. He may have helped them do what they wanted to. Right now they are forclosing on homes that they dont even know who holds the morage on them. Don't you believe for one minute they dont know better. And you can bet thet got some illegally. These pigs will do anything.

You know what's funny about what you said? All the risk packages those banks sold were actually profitable. What brought the system down was people not paying their mortgages. And yes banks were pressured by the government, starting with Bill Clinton, to give loans to people who couldn't afford them. And all of those bonuses were in contracts already signed when the financial crisis happened. And those banks were threatened with audits by the IRS if they didn't take bailout money. Good job on being clueless.

Frank, do just a little research. Find out what the community reinvestment act is. Find out what a Credit Default Swap is. Then see if you can figure out what happened. Factor this part in. Builders were allowed to act as mortgage brokers. Loans were bundled and sold to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Credit Default Swaps were not regulated and they could be purchased whether you had a vested intrest in the mortgage, or not. Then look at the role the Banking Queen, Bawney Fwank, and his Partner Chris Dodd had in these things. Then you will know why Dodd retired and Fwank is in trouble.
