Meg Whitman is a particularly noxious candidate, wearing her self entitlement on her sleeve. Other than vague blandishments about running California like a business, her only solution is to cut taxes and give additional incentives to her business cronies.
While Whitman isn't going to win, Californians shold thank her for pumping $140 million of her own money into our economy.
Thanks, Meg. Now go back into retirement. (Oh, and you don't have to vote any more after this election. You can go back to being blithely apathetic.)
Stormer-Your post should say California "will" not "can". After seeing the results of this poll it is obvious that this state will be forever controlled by the party in favor of welcoming, harboring and indoctrinating illegal immigrants.
It's $163 million and now she's racking up debt...just like a good politician....
Jerry is a conservative man that will live in a one-bedroom apartment and drive his own car. Meg will want to live like a queen with other people's money.
The difference in what it will cost to "keep" each of the two governors is enough for everyone in the State that does not vote along party lines to vote for Jerry.
Stormer: What you call a complete failure the rest of the world calls the "7th largest economy".
What State are you from Stormer? Is your State one of the Beggar States?
You live in San Diego Rob? Ever eat in a Denny's or IHOP? Ever notice all of those nice hotels and resorts all over the County? Who do you think is doing the work?
All we have to do to end illegal immigration is to quit hiring them and providing them with housing.
I don't think Brown and Boxer's lead in the polls signals any big endorsement or faith in those two particular politicians or the Democrats in General. I think it is just that the candidates who are running against them, Whitman and Fiorina are so horrible (as most Republicans are).
It's like who would you pick to be governor or senator of your state, Brown/Boxer or Attila the Hun?
I've lived in California my whole life and am old enough to remember the 1960's. Before prop. 13 passed California had one of the best educational systems in the world. Now it is way down on the list and it has one of the biggest prison systems in the world.
I took a trip not long ago from Central Calif. where I live to S. Calif. and it seemed like every 20 miles I passed an exit signed: Entrance to Such-Such State Correctional Facility.
Sad.
So-called "Free-Market" policies (Cutting taxes on the wealthy/corporations, privatization, deregulation, etc) have been as big a disaster in my state over the last 30-40 years as they have been for the country and the world.
Wow 7th largest economy! Wish size mattered when you were talking about economies. Of course the size of the debt does matter also. For libs I know that concept is challenging but let's try it on for size. Here is a new concept for the economically challenged. A deficit would be the amount of money that is spent beyond the amount of money that is taken in.
For 2011 California's would be $20 billion. That however is a lie. To arrive at that number they pretended that revenue from taxes would be the same amount as if unemployment for the state was below 5%. That would be quite an improvement from the current 12.4% They also pretended that they will receive $5.5 Billion from the Feds when in reality they are scheduled to receive $1.5 Billion. The budget also does not include the $10 Billion deficit in the unemployment fund nor the $1/2 Trillion ($500 Billion) in unfunded pension liabilities owed by the taxpayers to the public employees pension fund. When you add these numbers up and divide by the number of actual income taxpayers you come up with an average of over $40k owed per taxpayer. Attempts to raise taxes further will only result in less revenue not more as businesses leave the state in droves and the working (taxpaying) population follows, leaving those who depend on other people's tax dollars behind. That is the problem with Lib Math. They only understand the spending part of the equation. In their view the Bigger they spend the better!
Obviously you didn't read the article very well LU. The liberals' being the majority of California voters, want illegal immigrants to have jobs and shelter. Just as they want and vote to suck up as much tax money as they can take from others. They are the majority in California.
To the bloggers full of hate and lies about the California economy here is a scoop for you. We donate $60 Billion each year to the federal government to take care of the mid west and southern welfare states. We could easily take $20 Billion of it and wipe out our debt. I think Perry in Texas did something similar with stimulus funds that us Democrats gave him. If you want us to go away we would be happy to take that extra $60 Billion we donate to keep you rebublican welfare states afloat with us and balance our budget and reside in a wonderful world again closing our borders to idiots like Whitman and Fiorina. I'm all for it if California wants to. Racist, Bigots, homophobes need not apply for entry. Any takers? Any?
Anabanana If your Bs was even close to the truth and could really solve California's $550 Billion dollar deficit then what the hell has your favorite Senator Boxer been doing for the last 28 years?
AnaBanana, the stimulus funds that Texas got were no way given to us. Like all of the stimulus money it came from taxpayers, and many of those taxpayers live in Texas. It was Governor Perry's job to get back as much of it as possible, since it was taken from us to start with.
Abdulla, It was the Republicans and prop 13 that put California in the position it's in....or are you not old enough to remember that shortly after Reagan signed Prop 13 Orange County (Los Angeles) filed for bankruptsy?
For libs I know that concept is challenging but let's try it on for size. Here is a new concept for the economically challenged. A deficit would be the amount of money that is spent beyond the amount of money that is taken in.
Where were your rants when the deficit was quadrupled during the 12 years of Regan/Bush? Or when it was nearly doubled again during the 8 years of George W. Bush? What about the 380 Billion dollars that had to be spent from the Obama budget in November 2009 to pay interest on the national debt the was incurred before January of 2009? It looks like the Republicans have done plenty of deficit spending themselves pal. As a matter of fact an argument can be made that their greed & irresponsible fiscal habits put us in this situation. So when you go pointing fingers make sure that it doesn't come right back at you. How does that grab you?
First of all let's make it perfectly clear. I am not your pal and resent your assertion that I would even have one shred of positive feelings towards an ignorant a$$hole like yourself.
Secondly-I really don't give a damn about your Blame it on Bush, Reagan or any other politician argument. In my book people who spend more than they earn are completely irresponsible and when it is my money they are spending I abhor it.
Thirdly-You can argue all you want that Republicans caused this mess but you can't deny the fact that it was ultimately caused by the housing crisis which has it roots in 1999 when the Clinton Administration changed the CRA.
Fourthly-You are completely off topic since this article has nothing to do with any of this.
My post was a response to the absurd claim that California is not in any kind of fiscal trouble because they are the world's seventh largest economy, as if that matters. So in a nutshell gillanator, why don't you just grab your pointy fingers and put them right up in that place where the sun doesn't shine, right next to your face.
Second of all, the CRA had nothing whatsoever to do with the mortgage crisis; less than 15% of the failed loaded were originated by banks subject to CRA regulations. I know this is a favorite Republican talking point, but it's just plain wrong, and has been demonstrated to be wrong on countless seeds on NV. Shame of you for repeating a debunked lie.
That is laughable. A bunch of Libs getting together on NV and deciding Clinton only changed 15% of the mortgage market as your credible source. He required FNMA, FHLMC and FHA to lower their standards to subprime. Are you going to try and have us believe that those secondary lenders only comprise 15% of the mortgage market? Here is but one article from the New York Times in 1999 in which the subsequent crisis and bailout was aptly predicted. Shame on you all for debunking it with lies.

"You've heard of mental depression; this is a mental recession," Gramm tells the Washington Times, adding that despite all the bad news out there US economic growth continues at a rate of approximately 1 percent. jerry brown is back as gov and legal weed is a reality.....wake up kev it's not a dream, it's real life in good ol' cali again.....sweet weed dreams, night-night sleep tight and don't let the tea-baggers bite!! whoo-aa
Karen from La, There is something wrong with you. You must suffer from the same malaise as Sara. If Pres Obama is a dufus what does that make you and for that matter GW Bush? I would like you you to list anything positive that came out of the last administration.
You teabaggers walk around foaming at the mouth snarling words like fascist, communist socialist which are all words that you got when Glen Beck spat them in your mouths but you really have no freaking idea what any of them mean. If anyone you can actually clearly give us the meanings of those words and how they relate to President Obama I and most of us here will be forever impressed.
BTW. I guess all of your poison towards the president is because he elected your current Governor and caused the mess the state is in?
You know if you teabaggers would be honest and admit what your problem with the President really is I and many others would respect you more. At least during Jim Crow everyone said what they had to instead of now having to resort to euphemisms.
Allmill 2 - What I find interesting is that the right by and large defend American Corporations for outsourcing, moving their headquarters and operations to Communist China. And in doing so they are making China's economy and communist government strong. But yet they spew communist out at their political party rivals (even though it isn't true) like it is some kind of disease. I don't understand how the right wing can be Pro-communist and anti-communist at the same time.
Of course I also remember that people right here on the Vine blamed the economy on Obama just 2 weeks after he took office, and at the same time said that 911 couldn't have been Bush's responsibility because he had only been in office for 8 months. I think I see a pattern here.
My post that was deleted was on topic. I want to call out the seeder on deleting it without explanation. Tyler did not delete it because I would have received an explanation email and I did not.
I do not think it follows the Code of Honor to delete opinions.
This is not Nazi Germany.
I spent some time working for my candidate yesterday. I hope that all of you do the same
Obama a fascist/communist/socialist? You are truly ignorant and don't know what any of those are if you think Obama comes close to any of those ideologies. Time for you to get back to icing the Cinnabons.
msnbc - are you going to explain your deletion ? You should be the vanguard of free speech and yet.... you delete a post that did not violate anything. You never provided an explanation.
Please explain specifically how Obama fits the classic definition of any of the labels you use as pejoratives to describe him.
I know that Beck & Limbaugh and his ilk have an audience of sycophants that hang on his every word, but here on Newsvine one must back up their assertions with an argument.
This is good news because Whitman couldn't pull out Calif after what the Democrats have done to ruin the state. Leave it the hands of the Democrats and when it fails even further , and the people get what they deserve and the Feds stop funding a lost cause it's WE TOLD YOU SO.
Actually California throughout most of it's history WAS a Welfare State operating off of Federal Aid until a few (very few) Democrats gained office, Now they actually sort of support themselves for the first time in 60 years, But when it comes down to it they should still be considered a Republican State until their Gov, etc are replaced with Democrats who have a MUCH better economic plan to pull them out of the hole Republican leadership has dug them into over the past 20 years
Republican States in general ARE the "Welfare" States they scream so loudly against, Texas itself takes in more in Federal Aid than every single welfare recipient in the USA combined and has for over 20 years. Arizona's State Government would fold in less than a month if Federal Aid was cut off!!!
Here is an interesting read about Texas and their begging for MORE in Federal aid
Thank you Gene for not draining my tax dollars by finishing high school. Your post was a grammatical mess and a massacre of the English language. It made no sense and should be collapsed until you pass the 3rd grade.
As a native Californian, who remembers the walnut and orange groves, and the dairy farms, of Orange County, this is fabulous news! Meg Whitman is a candidate most foul. She will further run my beautiful state and native home into the ground with her fuzzy and failed policies.
One only needs to do minor research of Jerry Brown's accomplishments to know this man is a straight shooter, honest and will put the needs of Californians at the forefront. Meg is, IMHO, a true carpetbagger. She has tapped into the opportunity and riches of California and now seeks to horde its future for herself and her ilk.
I believe it is the bedweting Democratic enviromentalists that have shut off the water to the middle of your farm state, growers, causing more job loss and creating more social strife. so get back in bed with your enviromentalist Democrats and continue on the path to failure.
Riches what riches how about you pay what you owe first. Your state is bankrupt or close and the only ones who got rich are the morons like Pelosi, Brown and others who knew how to play on your ignorance and hopes for a cleaner, freer, dope smoking state...
This 2 rants would make a lot more sense IF California had not been ran into the ground by Republicans over the past years, The few Democrats that have been elected in California are responsible for getting them OFF of Federal Aid and cutting deficit spending by hundreds of millions. A few more Democrats and they could actually be paying down their loans instead of just slowing down their spending.
RJ, as a 3rd generation native Californian I couldn't agree more! Whitman is only out for Whitman and I think would use the governorship as a stepping stone to a Vice-presidential bid with Mitt Romney in 2012. California will never be the beautiful state you and I once knew but at least Jerry Brown has that same sense of pride in his native state and is leading by example with a frugal campaign, at 1/10th of what Whitman is spending!
RJ, I remember when Knott's Berry Farm raised berries. I also remember when driving up from San Diego, my eyes would start watering around Anaheim due to smog, and you couldn't see the San Bernardino mountains from San Bernardino. Conservatives predicted that imposing smog controls would destroy the economy. Conservatives predicted banning DDT would destroy the economy. Conservatives predicted lowering taxes would create wealth for all. Why anyone heeds the predictions of conservatives is behond me.
Hey Joe! Yes, and I remember Tin Can Alley and people tossing litter out of their cars. Shame on California to impose a fine on those who would litter! Where do we find that in our Constitution? The framers never intended such outreach by the government!
You're right. The smog was ungodly. Where did it go???
I also remember Rainbow Pier, Nu-Pike, and the sailors and tattoo parlors in Long Beach. What about Pacific Ocean Park. How about Marineland?
Moreover, "conservatives" don't seem to want to conserve anything unless it's good for their bottom line. And, observing the last two years of politics...in California and in the country, "conservatives" are ONLY about power and not working for the people. It is appalling how they want to limit my freedom. Their leader, who acted in historic proportions to line the pockets of his friends, nearly brought our country to collapse. That is a momumental achievement.
I think Arnold Schwarzenegger did his best, but discovered the overwhelming challenges. I applaud him for sticking with Prop. 23.
Watching two debates between Brown and Whitman, I was outraged that Whitman compared California to Texas, where they skirt the laws to encourage business. Also, she continues to believe we are losing jobs to Nevada and Arizona because of those states lax regulations. Sorry, Meg, this ain't Texas, Nevada or Arizona.
California, with its colorful history, albeit sometimes harsh and unrelenting, is home to Earth's oldest living thing and its tallest living thing--the bristlecone pine and the giant Sequoia. It is such a resource-rich state, that the 100 or so Indian nations that thrived before the European invasion lived peaceably and traded different goods and materials.
That said, Whitman with her anti-regulation beliefs and policies, with her run-California-like-a business philosophy, will spell disaster for our state. She is worse that Ronald Reagan, and that was pretty bad....Look what Reagan has done to the national landscape. Republicans revere that horrid man.
In closing, I have to get ready for work so my tax dollars continue to pay for education, roads, police and fire protection and protecting my environment. I know these things are absent from the Constitution, but I guess I will look the other way.
One only needs to do minor research of Jerry Brown's accomplishments to know this man is a straight shooter, honest and will put the needs of Californians at the forefront.
I can not believe you said this.
1. Brown is against death penalty and STOPPED all executions against the will of the people of CA. Why is his viewpoint more important than ours?
2. Brown argued for the gay couples in federal court against the will of the people of CA. Why did he shirk his fiduciary duty to the people of this state?
3. Brown wanted to put an innocent man back in jail after this person already spent 30 years in jail (actually 26) for a crime he did not commit - Bruce Lisker.
These are all facts and prove that Brown acts against the Californian people, unless you believe that voting and laws do not matter and in that case, move somewhere else because that is not how it is supposed to work in the U.S.
On your point number 2, it was not the will of the people in CA that argued to ban gay marriage. It was the will of the Mormons in Utah that came into your state and decided they were going to affect policy due in part to their crazy wack-job of religious beliefs. Too many in your state were just stupid enough to believe them.
it was not the will of the people in CA that argued to ban gay marriage.
Dem in Texas - when is your state going to pass gay marriage?
That said, from the beginning of our state's history, Californians have always defined marriage as between a man and a woman.
We voted TWICE in recent history and the vote was the same BOTH TIMES.
In fact, in Jerry Brown's brief to federal court, he outlined how Californians have always said no to gay marriage.
Just because Jerry Brown's kid or relative is gay is why Jerry Brown completely disregards Californian's vote on gay marriage. Elected officials are SUPPOSED TO REPRESENT their constituents.
And by the way, I made my decision without any Mormon involvement. Never even knew they were involved until the gay people screamed in protest. Almost ALL of the ads that I saw were to say no to Prop 8 and I still said Yes.
Dem in Texas - when is your state going to pass gay marriage?
Irrelevant.
That said, from the beginning of our state's history, Californians have always defined marriage as between a man and a woman.
From the beginning we also always said that interracial marriage was prohibited. The Supreme court saw differently, and this is now the law of the land. In short, they decided that marrying the one you love is a basic human right.
Just because a majority of people vote on something does not make it morally correct or Constitutionally justifiable.
"The people" -- or any branch of government for that matter -- are often wrong; our forefathers knew this and this is why we have the particular system of checks and balances that we do.
Dem in TX - Utah Mormons didn't vote, Californians did. Besides Hollywood spent more money on Prop 8 than any other group of donors, funny how that never is mentioned by pro-gay marriage groups. Blaming Mormons in Utah instead of accepting the actual WILL of the people of CA is an incredibly weak argument. CA voters have made their opinion known TWICE on this issue and yet you and many liberals still think we were all duped into voting against gay marriage. Jerry Brown as AG has a duty to uphold the CA Constitution which includes prop. 8. It's not his duty to determine which part of the Constitution he deems valid, that is for our court system to decide.
No one should be surprised by Democrats winning in California. No one, also, should be surprised when California continues down it's path to bankruptcy.
@UKME-------So his apostrophe sucked, at least he's smart enough to know a state can't embrace millions of illegal foreigners without hurting your legal citizens!
God, Am I glad I left Calif. I loved it. But the GD lefties have ruined it. Losers are just that: Losers. The State got where it was by rugged individuals, NOT by nonproductive LOSERS! Keep up with the liberal BS. as you sink FURTHER into the morass of ENTITLEMENT! Play the class warfare game. See where that gets you. Sure, attack the messenger since you can't refute the facts. You need a driver's license to drive; why not one to RESPONSIBLY reproduce?! You "progressives" have destroyed the BEST state of all 50 with your misguided social engieering and handwringing "compassion." The World does NOT work that way despite your wish/desire that it would. Pathetic!!!!
Cutter - where did you move? I am getting tired of entitlement programs up the wazoo to the detriment of everything else. It's just that I need to live near the ocean and physically train all year. Maybe I'm stuck here. That's why I'm really trying to change the tide.
We don't need any more Democrat Robin Hoods in CA.
Jeryy. I wonder how much you know about the Golden State? And what you know must come from selective reading... Ever heard of ENRON? That must be Democrat Company since it failed so miserably and did horrendous damage to California.. never mind those Texans who ran it got to keep their wealth they sucked out of it.
Never mind California pays much more to the Fed treasury that any other stae and gets a minus net return. And you, Storm... California deserves a lot better than it gets.. It has always worked to care for its residents.. Those recent GOP Govs did great damage to the Golden State-Reagan almost dismantled the Univ system. Brown and Boxer are what is best for Caliornia... and speak to its soul....
@oldpopulist-------You are right, Brown and Boxer represent the "failed socialist state" nearly as well as "psycho"Pelosi does! Don't you people realize there is something unstable about people who are complete failures, but continue to believe they're really something special!
And I guess that you had no Governor and no Repub congress in control of that state. Yep, is was Brown, Boxer and Pelosi that is responsible for the mess the state is in. You people are "pathetic" try being honest for a minute. I know that it is a foreign (or as you would say "illegal alien") concept but just try it, you may start an Elephant revolution.
Brown and Boxer are what is best for Caliornia... and speak to its soul....
My eyes definitely rolled on this one. I do not like politicians who disregard their constituents.
It is clear that Brown and Boxer do disregard our votes. re: Brown, see my post 3.9 as to his major flaws.
Re: Boxer. She agrees for amnesty for illegal aliens. Most Californians are totally against that.
The good news is that there are 100 senators and she is only one. The last time the amnesty bill came up, I lobbied outside the state to make certain it did not pass. It did not. We will continue to fight amnesty. My parents ARE LEGAL IMMIGRANTS and I am first generation born in the U.S.
Don't slap legal immigrants in the face by allowing lawbreakers to become American.
Whitman's problem is that they advertised how much money she was spending of her own wealth to win. $140 million! Really? That alone will turn off voters.
Why should that turn off voters? Do you think it's better to have the unions spend millions on Brown's campaign? Whitman will not be beholden to anyone and Brown, as he has always been, will do the unions bidding.
So Brown will be beholding to American workers since they ARE the union!!!
Republicans hate unions SO much, Yet in every union across the USA each and every one of them work for the middle class workers in them!!!! Unions are NOT huge multi-national corporations looking to move jobs overseas for cheaper labor, They are made up of locals which are made up of the local workers, AMERICAN WORKERS
The problem is, the unions that Brown is getting the money from, and who he is supporting are STATE EMPLOYEE UNIONS, not the guys in a factory, that would pay taxes to the State, along with their employer. State union workers are paid by taxes, and their employer pays none. I have been in the AFofL,CIO, and the the United Clerks Union, and they provided help for workers in BUSINESSES, not the ever ending state workers, that , in my opinion are under worked, and over paid in retirement.
I agree with the teabaggers. Brown is going to be the toy of the Unions who want to protect American jobs and look out for the American worker. How unamerican!!!!!
We should be the toy of big business and companies who need tax breaks as they ship all of our jobs to China and India, and to foreign companies (and maybe even governments) secretly spending big bucks to destroy America. Unions are no good!! Secret Money.,.... Priceless!!!
Come on lets all join in the Chant.. America for sale!!! America for sale!!!
With all the cities and States that are in Democratic control and in fiscal trouble, one would think some common sense would prevail. The people who are about to really suffer would want a change to a better system, staying away from the socialistic programs pushed by the Democrats, that have bankrupt their state and caused so much un-employment.
California deserves Jerry Brown, a refried career hack politician who has never really accomplished anything in his life other that bouncing around from one political job to another. He won't have the b*lls to do what it takes because he's a democrat. Brown will be on his knees to his bud Obama begging for a bailout.....as far as I'm concern, California can rot.
Then what is he going to do? He apparently cannot read of he would know a little about Brown and the accomplishments he has already had, Like getting California OFF of the Federal Aid list and back on track to be prosperous within the next 5 years.
California is not smart enough to see what's happeneing to the state. It's a liberal mess and they expect the rest of the USA to bail them out.
Sorry to tell you the rest of the states feel its time you take some fiscal responsibility for the liberal laws you placed on yourself and your states citizens.
It's time to show some responsibility and pay for your own affairs. Stop being a drain on the rest of America.
Jerry, Jerry, Jerry....Your Chinese TV and all the other Chinese crap you buy, which is artifically priced low because the Chinese government subsidizes its factories, arrived in the ports of California.
Should California seceed, it would be the 8th largest STAND ALONE economy in the WORLD. Hmmmmm.....Perhaps you should learn a little and stand for American jobs in America. Even the Walmart you frequent has sold its soul to the Chinese.
Perhaps you should look at the tariffs the Obama Administration has imposed on Chinese imports....Namely, steel pipe and tires for an example.
California is fine. Let's think about the FAILED Bush adminstration economic and social policies that has not only put my state in its predicament, but the whole county. Thank God the Obama Adminstration is pulling us out of disaster.
Not a Whitman fan, but Brown is back to finish off the state he screwed in the 80's. Most don't rememeber that path he took us down. Those who say Calif is fine are Stupid Dems that think Calif can spend and spend it way out of its problems. The state has become a toilet bowl after years of Dem control and gets worst year after years. Brown will again sell the people of Calif to the unions that got him voted back in.
Calif_guy, maybe you should rethink your math. In the 30 years, since Brown was governor, 15 were under the Republican control of Reagan & Arnold! Reagan did just as much damage in 8 years as any Democrat you can cite!
Keep blaming Governors and ignore the insane legislators in CA and NY and you miss the point. Local idiots keep electing stupid socialists to state houses, and this is what they get. Wake up America, you are doing it to yourselves!
Do any of you on this vine who are espousing how badly the Democrats have screwed up California realize that the current Governor who has been in office since October 7, 2003, is a REPUBLICAN????? That is seven years folks. Why is California still so screwed up with a Republican as their governor?? I would really like to hear your take on this subject and I am NOT being sarcastic!
If it had not been for a republican governor California would be in worse shape. The democrats won't admit that it's the CA legislature that writes budgets, laws and run the government. Arnold, I'm not a fan, but he did hold down the democrats spending bills. Why did it take so long to pass a "mirror & smoke budget", because the democrats were more interested in supporting their union buddies. If Brown is elected he will again cave in to the unions demands and will try everything in his power to raise taxes for his pet projects. He will again appoint liberal judges to the CA courts. (Remember the voters recalled the last 3 judges he appointed.) He was against proposition 13 and did everything to get around its provisions. He squandered his so called 6 billion surplus because he could not say "no" to spending on union and other liberal causes. Until CA reins in the public unions there will never be a balanced budget in CA regardless who wins the governorship, at least with a Republican governor the bleeding won't be so bad. If you think the democratic control of the federal government was bad, wait until you see a democratic controlled state government (governor & legislature) in CA. I for one have already made arrangements to move out of California if Brown is elected. I can not, as a retired individual, go through another rein of Jerry Brown.
As another "retired" individual who made a conscious decision to move back to CA (after finding that the grass is not greener on the other side) I will be happy to help you pack your belongings!
sfcret, we'll be glad to see you go! While Gerry Brown was opposed to Prop 13, once it was voted in, he enforced it as evidenced by his subsequent endorsement by Prop 13 creator - Howard Jarvis! The surplus you say he squandered was in fact used to bail-out the cities and counties whose property tax revenues were drastically cut by Prop 13! Ultimately, Prop 13 was a very good thing for property owners in the state, but transition could have disastrous if Brown hadn't have bailed communities out!
Diane, his name is Jerry Brown and yes he squandered the surplus because the passage of proposition 13 was a message to the government in CA that the people were tired of having taxes raised every year and that we wanted spending cut. It was not Brown's job to bail out local communities. Everyone was told to tighten their belts. Everyone did except the public unions. More importantly his selection of judges were a disaster for the court system in CA. Brown will and always has been in the unions pockets. You live with it, I don't have. But don't wept when your fees and taxes go up with a democratic governor and a democratic legislature. Remember we got rid of Davis and Brown's judges by recall, we can also get rid of Brown the same way.
In California it doesn't matter who you elect for governor, the state legislature is controlled by "radical progressives" and they are at least partially controlled by municipal unions! The situation in California is a microcosm of one of the biggest reasons our country is failing and cannot recover, unfortunately, after 40 years of 'left wing "indoctrination in our schools, the disease of "entitlement has infected millions of Americans! California has some weird way developed an air that the state is somehow "special" when nothing could be further from reality, California as a whole is a complete failure and because of their refusal to learn from past mistakes they will eventually come begging to Uncle Sam , begging for what responsible states have produced for themselves! California should not be bailed out, the whole rotten mess needs to go "belly up" and the unions forced to settle for pennies on the dollar!
Shenlee, It is because of the INSANE Democratically controlled Legislature. The Liberal idiots have done all they can to destroy the State. Arnie is/was fighting an essentially no-win situation. Without him, the State of Calif. probably would have had to file for bankruptcy. Sad, because the miserable Federal Gov't. can just print more money. The solution: End the GD entitlements. The result: anarchy (NOT good). Once empowered (Thanks to the dogooders), the Lefties and their constituency take, take, take until there is no more to take; and then we ALL lose. AND, I'm NOT defending the capitalist crooks: They should be summarily executed. Looks like a "Can't win for losing" scenario.
Jerry Brown will be a pragmatic leader, just as he was when he was governor before. I lived in California '76-'80 and was happy to have him as my governor. I also don't see Jerry Brown as particularly beholden to anyone.
Are you kidding? Open up your eyes! Moonbeam's campaign was funded over 99% by the public employee's unions. No wonder this state is going down the toilet! It's easier to listen to and spout populist talking points rather than learning fact.
Dave, you know you still get the newsletter. You know exactly what is going on in the brotherhood. Dave, everyone is tickled excrementless about your retirement. So pull the string and change the track on your internal speaker. Sorry about the excrementess. It was a term we used alot when I belonged to a brotherhood back in the day. It was a crass expression but very descriptive and to the point.
Come on Left Coast Folks! We need to vote the Democrats out on November 2, 2010. May be the time zone gap has you confused. Gerry is still stuck on the 60's and 70's. Fiorina will bring California government contracts...and jobs. Boxer just purchases stock when she knows who is going to win an awarded contract. And, Oregon and Washington State you have been given nothing by Obama, but he has cost you plenty. Vote Republican, the Tea Party Groups in your States have helped put up some good renewal, reform, control government legislation and spending Candidates...vote them into Office!
Kevin, maybe you need to move to one of those West Coast states so you can vote your conscience. In the meantime, you need to trust those of us who do vote in these states to understand that we vote for what is in our best interests.
Well, Kevin, its easy to see you believe more in rhetoric than you do believe in reality. The Tea Party are alleged populists whose biggest single contributors are conservative big business advocates. That is as much populism as cheez-whiz is really cheese; it may taste good but its nutritional value is nil. Although I am not fond of socialism (it bleeds the competitive nature out of people), I am less fond of fascism (corporate control of government where choices are made for you). I am an advocate of ethical capitalism and a strong middle-class. I don't see where someone spending almost enough money to buy a governership (be it an individual or a corporation) fits into either of those goals. Maybe, according to many like you, we should just turn over our fortunes to the sociopathic moguls who have stolen our savings and our home values from us so they could enrich themselves. Doesn't sound much like democracy to me.
I already voted. I voted for every Democrat on the ballot! You just don't get it; Republican, Tea Party or whatever you want to call yourselves, you're 100 years behind the times! Why don't you find a deserted island and move there? You can start your own country with your own ideologies...
Don555, YOU don't study history. YOU will be the occupant of "the deserted island" if you keep believing/supporting the totally irrational, handwringing liberal agenda. It may read well, but it is an utopian illusion. Only when the "Huns" are at the gates will you realize the folly of your beliefs.
California is in the terrible financial shape despite having Arnold as Gov because liberal democratic unions and government workers don't want change. All they want is more money for themselves and to secure their pensions and increase the spending of their programs. They are a parasite bleeding the host dry and sooner than later their greed will kill them both. And Jerry Brown is going to "fix" this? He's one of them you idiots.
Anyone who spends over 100 million dollars for a job that barely pays $250,000 is incoherent, unstable, and fanatical. Gerry Brown has been the most consistent politician in California since 1975. How many jobs in California could 100 million dollars stimulate?
I love it. Unions the most "grass roots" and populist thing, is hated by the Republicans and the Tea Party. When they themselves claim to be populsit and grass roots. But is that a surprise? No, the republicans are probably to stupidity do know what populism actually is.
Union money is coming from all the workers, not just a few and they are the people that actually produce something. The republican's ideas for cutting deficit will be like thier business model, Lay off a bunch of people and give themselves fat bonuses. Why would californians want a corporate "ho" for thier leader?
Leave it to the radical leftists in California to elect a has-been hippie instead of an accomplished adult. The real earthquake in the Peoples' Republic will take place when Jerry Moonbeam becomes governor again. California is the Comedy Channel on grass.
Once again MSNBC selects a report that promotes a democrat by quoting a poll by a notoriously left wing source. No one here in California pays any attention to what the L.A. Times says. Real Clear Politics shows Brown with an average of a 6 point lead. Now, he may very well win this race considering how the morons in this state look like they are going to reelect the same idiots to the legislature that they have been electing here for the past three decades and have brought California to the brink of bankruptcy with their tax and spend, anti-business policies. Putting in an ultra left, stuck in the sixties, big government career politician like Jerry Brown will just ensure that California goes down the tubes.
It's time to have a Democratic Governor. We've been lead by Republican Governors for too long. Gray Davis stepped into a mess left by Wilson. The deregulation of electric companies under Gov. Wilson and the disaster that followed doomed Gov. Davis. The anger from citizens clouded his chance to perform. I think we all focused our anger in a recall. However, look at how the state has be lead under Republican Governors. Gov. Deukmejian did nothing for our state except try to make all college education too expensive for its citizens and lead us into more debt. Gov. Wilson was no different. He increased the cost of a college education and again, more debt. Gov. Schwarzenegger tried at first to be creative. He deserves credit for his first year and the hope he did bring to all citizens. However that faded after the "Girly Man" comment. I think it's time for some new leadership. A democratic leadership. Hey, we gotta try something new. Having a Republican Governor hasn't worked. I know Meg Whitman would be a scary disaster! Her demeanor would cause more divisiveness which we don't need. I'm sure she would definitely make us pay her back for all the money she has spent on this election by living large on our expense. I'm going with the experience and Gov. Brown's record. Plus I like the fact he reduced crime in Oakland during his time as Major. I like that he chose to live within a neighborhood that gave him clear in-site to the problems of the city. Where has Meg Whitman lived? Surely not in a poor part of town. She is out of touch, more of the same policies, treated her own employees poorly, caught with her hand in the cookie jar (Goldman Sachs) and would treat Latinos as second class citizens.
EXACTLY jtriggs. The LA Times/USC poll is one of the most laughable, unreliable polls here in California. There polls predicted Cruz Bustamente winning one year and that Davis would beat recall among other things. It's a very, very tight race. If Brown/Boxer win, California WILL go down in flames. When I grew up here, it was truly the Golden State. Now,not so much. I'm done with all polls until November 2nd when it counts. But anyone who basis anything on the LA Times/USC polls needs to see how great there polling has been in the past and when I say great I mean lousy. Go Meg, Carly, Watson (my district).
lib50, Brown MIGHT get it right. But Boxer, what a nauseating Bitch! It seems that you would vote for ANYONE as long as "Dem." followed their name on the ballot box. Staight party voter? Hmm?
It seems that you would vote for ANYONE as long as "Dem." followed their name on the ballot box. Staight party voter? Hmm?
Nope, not even a democrat. I've often voted republican. I just hate the current party and their platform. When republicans drop their fringy bagger portion of the party I may take another look, but that hasn't happened and isn't likely in the near future.
Please God, not Jerry Brown again! I had to live through this guy once in my life, why a second time? Isn't there someone in the dem party in California who wants to be the top cheese besides Jerry? Come on people. Read your history books. Jerry is a space cadet who comes from some weird place in his head. Why not anyone from Sunset Blvd. or Venice Beach, or The Tenderloin. Why Mr. Oakland?
no one can fix that screwed up state..the best thing that could happen is california slides into the ocean and vanishes forever....their screwed up laws, messed up people and pollution deserve no less..
The academic definition of 'fascism' is corporate control of the government; Meg Whitman is the epitome of this. Government cannot be run like a business despite the rhetoric which says it should be. Why? Simple. Government is supposed to be run for the enrichment of all of its citizens. Business is run for the enrichment of a few at the top; those like Meg Whitman who think they can buy the government from the people as if it were just another business acquisition. Rather than complain about the politicians, true populists (of which many Tea Partiers claim to be) we should be complaining about those who would buy our politicians (hence our government) out from under us. It is not Obama or the gays who have eroded the American dream; it is those who dream American can be bought for any asking price---theirs. It is not political philosphy which undermines our freedom--it is a pro big business (and anti-middle class and anti-small business) sector which squeezes everyone else until they are dry and think America is theirs to buy along with our votes.
Well said Robert. It's always small business that has developed in California that ends up becoming the next big wave. The big businesses in California sit on their behinds, try to manipulate the political system to their advantage and then they stagnate.
California can continue on its way to complete failure, taking Brown,Pelosi,Boxer,Waters,Waxman and the rest of the Democrats with them.
Uhhh well, Brown and Boxer I guess.
Any takers? Any?
http://www.visualeconomics.com/united-states-federal-tax-dollars/
Yah! I'm not talking out of my a@# like most of you. I have the proof!
Thanks AnaBanana - these other blogs were making me ill. Well put!
Anabanana If your Bs was even close to the truth and could really solve California's $550 Billion dollar deficit then what the hell has your favorite Senator Boxer been doing for the last 28 years?
meg whitman gop dirtbagger & liar.
Nicely put SJ! You need to reconsider your politcal position. You must be hurting for stimulating, intelligent conversation within your party.
Remember what brown did last time ??? it was a disaster !!!
We need to give the republicans a chance to get us out of our swamp in california !!!!!someone with an experience in business !! we need jobs !!!
AnaBanana, the stimulus funds that Texas got were no way given to us. Like all of the stimulus money it came from taxpayers, and many of those taxpayers live in Texas. It was Governor Perry's job to get back as much of it as possible, since it was taken from us to start with.
If Brown wins, it is likely that his first new bill will be getting a loan from the US taxpayers......go Calif..........you bunch of losers...........
Abdulla, It was the Republicans and prop 13 that put California in the position it's in....or are you not old enough to remember that shortly after Reagan signed Prop 13 Orange County (Los Angeles) filed for bankruptsy?
If Brown wins, he'll get amnesty passed for illegal aliens.
Rob in San Diego - the term is illegal alien. An immigrant comes legally.
Rob San Diego
Brown it is. read it and weep.
Rob,
First of all you're blatantly violating the CoH.

Drs. McCain and Gramm Put the U.S. Economy on the Couch; Gramm Diagnoses
a "Mental Recession" Among U.S. "Whiners"July 10, 2008 9:56 AM
A top economic adviser to Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., -- former Sen. Phil
Gramm, R-Texas, now vice chair of Swiss banking giant UBS -- tells the
Washington Times that the US economy is being weighed down by the belief
by Americans that the economy is bad.
"You've heard of mental depression; this is a mental recession," Gramm
tells the Washington Times, adding that despite all the bad news out
there US economic growth continues at a rate of approximately 1 percent.
"We may have a recession; we haven't had one yet.
"The fundamentals of our economy are strong." - John McCain, Sept. 15,
2008, the day that Lehman Brothers filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
In the first half of 2008 and even in the second half, all the repugs
were saying THAT EVERYTHING WAS PERFECTLY OK.
President Clinton created 23 million new jobs and left a huge budget
surplus
And the Democrats should have hired his wife instead of the dufus they did hire.
President Obama is no President Clinton.
The Clintons are MODERATES.
Obama borders on fascist/communist/socialist.
jerry brown is back as gov and legal weed is a reality.....wake up kev it's not a dream, it's real life in good ol' cali again.....sweet weed dreams, night-night sleep tight and don't let the tea-baggers bite!!
Put up or Shut the heck up!!!!!
I think I see a pattern here.
allmill
You are rude. Why do you need to call people names? It's because YOU are insecure.
That is all I have to say to you.
I hope that all of you do the same
AND STOP COLLAPSING ROB IN SAN DIEGO'S POSTS.
Even though I didn't see rob in SD's post until this morning I think the post number 1.19 was well within the guidelines of being collapsed.
Ah thank god, at least some Californians still have their brains turned on...
Karen,
Obama a fascist/communist/socialist? You are truly ignorant and don't know what any of those are if you think Obama comes close to any of those ideologies. Time for you to get back to icing the Cinnabons.
Dem in Texas
Your moniker says it all - that you are a believer in the Obama messiah.
I'll say it again. Obama is a fascist/socialist/communist and you Democrats should have hired Hillary Clinton instead.
If you had, we probably would see different results in this midterm.
Signed - an independent who would have voted for Hillary Clinton and never will vote for Obama.
msnbc - are you going to explain your deletion ? You should be the vanguard of free speech and yet.... you delete a post that did not violate anything. You never provided an explanation.
I look forward to your reply.
Karen,
Please explain specifically how Obama fits the classic definition of any of the labels you use as pejoratives to describe him.
I know that Beck & Limbaugh and his ilk have an audience of sycophants that hang on his every word, but here on Newsvine one must back up their assertions with an argument.
Well there you go. We might as well all go home. A quote from a loser punk band will be the final word.
California deserves Jerry Brown.
This is good news because Whitman couldn't pull out Calif after what the Democrats have done to ruin the state. Leave it the hands of the Democrats and when it fails even further , and the people get what they deserve and the Feds stop funding a lost cause it's WE TOLD YOU SO.
You got it wrong gene, the feds don't fund California. California funds all the red states.
CitizenX is correct. Cali is a Donor State.
Arnie talked about withholding Federal taxes to use on our own Federal needs like sealing our borders and protecting our federal parks.
Redistribution of federal funding is wrong.
Here is an interesting read about Texas and their begging for MORE in Federal aid
http://www.window.state.tx.us/tpr/tpr4/c8.cg/c813.html
In 1993, federal aid became Texas' largest single source of state funding, topping sales tax collections.
Just a few FACTS Republicans hate, LOL
Bravo Jerry Brown!
I believe it is the bedweting Democratic enviromentalists that have shut off the water to the middle of your farm state, growers, causing more job loss and creating more social strife. so get back in bed with your enviromentalist Democrats and continue on the path to failure.
Put the needs first, sorry he cant pay for them..
Ah the good old days.
Karen,
On your point number 2, it was not the will of the people in CA that argued to ban gay marriage. It was the will of the Mormons in Utah that came into your state and decided they were going to affect policy due in part to their crazy wack-job of religious beliefs. Too many in your state were just stupid enough to believe them.
Irrelevant.
It looks like banning gay marriage is not a priority for Californians. AG Brown is winning.
The environment and good education seem to be the highest priorities because AG Brown is winning. He has been listening.
No one should be surprised by Democrats winning in California. No one, also, should be surprised when California continues down it's path to bankruptcy.
And no-one should be surprised when a Republican does not know basic grammar and how to use an apostrophe.
Red, welfare, parasite state people cannot vote in California.

Hey Man! No surprise! Whitman is nothing buit a rich loser!
California will get what it deserves, more hopeless spending from their Democratic Government and more layoffs continuing with more and more jobs lost.
And California is what? Swimming in debt. Yeah so much for someone rich trying to do something.
Apparently you feel the current digression in California is the correct direction, thats just insane.
I agree with you completely, Bo!
Agreed Bo, union all the way.
Teabagging geniuses.
Unions are the people that created the middle class.
With all the cities and States that are in Democratic control and in fiscal trouble, one would think some common sense would prevail. The people who are about to really suffer would want a change to a better system, staying away from the socialistic programs pushed by the Democrats, that have bankrupt their state and caused so much un-employment.
Uh,,,,You'd better look again, Democratic States are supporting Republican States need for Federal Aid just to survive and operate day to day
In 1993, federal aid became Texas' largest single source of state funding, topping sales tax collections.
We don't have to suffer because you are.
Way to use concrete evidence.
Then do not come to California, do not watch any Hollywood movies or tv shows, enjoy your narrow-minded life.
Then what is he going to do? He apparently cannot read of he would know a little about Brown and the accomplishments he has already had, Like getting California OFF of the Federal Aid list and back on track to be prosperous within the next 5 years.
You can stay in your own red, undereducated, welfare parasite state.
One the TP can offer up a viable candidate for an office, I will vote for them. It sems they do one debate then go into hiding.

They will just say that Arnie is a rino.
Because superficial people voted for "The Terminator", an actor, not a man with the brains for the actual job.
Legal you are in a dream world.

76 to 80. Hmmmm.......parallels the onset of the peruvian cocoa powder craze.
I hope my union gave to brown. I retired and don't pay dues anymore.
No.
Doesn't sound much like democracy to me.
robert c j,
perfectly stated. i especially like the cheez-whiz analogy.
I already voted. I voted for every Democrat on the ballot! You just don't get it; Republican, Tea Party or whatever you want to call yourselves, you're 100 years behind the times! Why don't you find a deserted island and move there? You can start your own country with your own ideologies...
California rejects the teaparty. Thank God.
For those who keep saying the tea party is supported by big business maybe you should read this article.
http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2010/1025/focus-fiorina-rubio-yumbrands-tea-party-good-for-business.html
Welcome back, Jerry!
I guess the californians believe that they can spend their way out of bankruptcy.
You have to look at it from a Republican business prespective, You have to spend $100 million to steal $300 million
It's her money she can do what she wants with it. Why aren't you bitching about all the union money being poured into Jerry's campaign?
because unions represent people.
Trying to slam the American worker, LakersGirl? Unions represent PEOPLE. Whitman represents the corporate elite.
The polls that matter are the ones in Califorinia, you know, the people who will actually be voting.
term limits should be strongly enforced.
Palin supporters prefer the half-term limit.
She is out of touch, more of the same policies, treated her own employees poorly, caught with her hand in the cookie jar (Goldman Sachs) and would treat Latinos as second class citizens.
has been lead! Sorry.
Losers, both of them. Go Brown and Boxer.
lib50, Brown MIGHT get it right. But Boxer, what a nauseating Bitch! It seems that you would vote for ANYONE as long as "Dem." followed their name on the ballot box. Staight party voter?
Why Mr. Oakland?
no one can fix that screwed up state..the best thing that could happen is california slides into the ocean and vanishes forever....their screwed up laws, messed up people and pollution deserve no less..
johnny, please study.
If you know something about Plate Tectonics, you would know that we are traveling North! Not West. It just get a little shaky getting there.
As for your comment about us as a state, you know nothing. However, I'm glad you don't live here. So, thanks!
I'm glad Johnny doesn't live here too. At least we aren't a bagger state.
Yup, hasn't snowed here in 52 years, no hurricanes, no tornadoes, a real hell.
Good Luck to all Californians if they elect Brown! They'll be in a worse mess than they are now & they'll deserve it!
Robert C J, would you include George Soros in your condemnation, or ONLY those with a different philosophic perspective?
