Since 1980, Wealth in the US has grown from 8 trillion to 40 trillion. That works out to about $125,000 for every man woman and child in the country. A one-time 20% tax on US wealth would help solve the debt problem. The saved interest payments could be used for healthcare.

Also, everyone in the US gets a taxbreak under Obama's plan. The dollars earned after earning $250,000 would be taxed an extra 3%. In other words, the first $250,000 we all earn is taxed at the current rates.

The health care fiasco bill is just BEGINNING to cost. 1% penalty of EVERY financial transaction you make is written into the bill. ATM withdrawl 1%, pay check deposit 1%, pay a bill 1% - EVERYTHING.

No one has said a word about the first Iraq war. That was just, and Bush 41 did the right thing. His son however is another story. I consider Bush 44 and Chaney war criminals. Yeah-I think 26 is too old for being on Mommy & Daddy's insurance. We expect them to vote and drink and go to war, but Mommy and Daddy will take care of them. Many have gone to college-I'm sure some have better jobs than their parents. Some insurance companies won't even sell policies to people under 26. What happens to those who have no parents? Or would have better insurance if it wasn't mandated that they be on their parent's policy.

Pre-existing conditions could have been better handled with a program similar to the one for ESRD that is handled by Medicare. And most states already have insurance for children. The health-care law was supposed to insure the poor who could not afford health care. Medicaid already does that. 40% of the people who don't have health care choose not to buy it.

Costs could have been better controlled by tort reform and by allowing medical insurance to be purchased across state lines-we can buy auto insurance across state lines. And that would eliminate a state bureaucracy too. HIPPA laws already have provisions for pre-existing conditions and those could have been amended to be more inclusive.

I do agree "The assault on intelligence in the country is disgusting", but it is the elitist attack on conservatives and the liberal attack on anyone not in complete agreement with them that is truly disgusting.

No, we don't know what HCR is all about. Thing is, neither do they? I 'm reading and hearing about group insurance plans raising rates and dropping coverage and this wasn't supposed to affect us at all. WELL, it is. NO, it's not the normal run of things. It's a direct result of HCR. Insurance is going up as it normally would, but a tad more to cover HCR. Boehner said HCR would bankrupt the nation. We didn't need him for that. We knew that all along. This plan needs serious revision or scrapped and rebuilt from the get-go.

It seems very popular to criticize what Obama has done. He is the first person in that office, in a long time, with some brains. He is honest, hard working, and has no secret agendas. What is needed is to get other people with similar attributes to work with him to get a healthcare system that will not bankrupt the country. He tried very hard to get input from all directions. The mindless dismissing of the work that he has accomplished is just noise to me. It is coming from people that either will lose profits when the waste from the current system is removed, or get comfort by crowding together and making Obama the evil one who has caused all of the problems.

It cost him and the Democrats politically because the American people could see how much it was going to cost them in terms of MONEY and QUALITY of CARE. I read these posts and it shocked me the lack of understanding folks have about the bill. It is a govt. takeover. If any of you were plan administrators, you would know. The mandates are pervasive, and for most, there is no "free pass" like McDonalds got when they showed the govt. they couldn't afford Obamacare. Rasmussen polls show 52% favoring a piece by piece revision of the law. RCP shows a +11.2 spread favoring repeal. It was simply for/against; then, revise was added to the pot. A repeal of the law takes 66 Senators and 288 house members to override BO's veto. Keep in mind that even if BO and congress battle over this law, it's heading to the Supreme court and they will revise it. The 2 most pressing issues are the tax cuts and DADT which has already been overturned by the courts. HCR doesn't kick in completely until 2014. It's on the agenda----back burner.

We're going to be spending that amount (or more) with either plan. Health care costs for 2008 was 2.3 TRILLION - that's for a single year! 30% of which goes to the insurance industry for 'administration.' (France gets about 1%)

The plan pays for itself - and reduces the deficit at twice the rate of Bohner's 'band-aid'.

The fact is: health care is in the same bubble as housing - over priced and not sustainable. We were headed for $2000 a month premiums if something was not done.

Health care in not only a financial issue but an Ethical and moral issue. It is not the role of the federal government to force its citizenry into private contracts. They have no authority. Regulation of interstate commerce does not equate to compelling of commerce. And anyway, insurance is regulated within individual states, so there is no interstate commerce to regulate.

Don't use car insurance as an example, that doesn't wash as that is only a requirement in some - not all - states if one chooses to drive a car. Keep in mind that states can do things that the federal government cannot. See the 10th Amendment for futher clarification.

The bill misses the root of the problem entirely and that is the skyrocketing COST OF CARE. All of which is conveniently overlooked in the Patient Affordability Act (hard not to laugh at that title since it is going to cost us patients a huge amount of money).

Willow- Cite the place in the HCR law where it taxes small business. If you are a plan administrator, are you getting your information from your insurance provider? Perhaps you would be wise to get the information first hand instead. Are these the "small" businesses you are talking about? There is even a Small Business Tax Credit included.

I posted the Reuters link to the interview with the author of the study (who supplied the 45000 number, not the Democrats, as you state) because the journal article itself is by subscription only, so most folks wouldn't be able to read it. Drdr - As I recall, (unfortunately it has been a long time since this subject has come up, it was debunked long ago and those spouting this had quit doing so) Weren't they using information from the CDC? And while the data said that 45000 died without insurance. There was no data on how they verified the numbers and if simply not having insurance was the direct cause of death? Not things like being hit by a bus? Wouldn't matter if you have insurance or not. Much data was lacking to prove the contention. While it can be said 45000 died, some years ago without insurance. There is no proof that "having no insurance" is the direct cause of death.

As to the tax business. I have received information from several sources, and subsequently thrown them away as each new article arrived. As this develops, the story keeps changing, but the last source I had, showed it later down the road. As for the Small business credit, it is temporary and it is a double decreasing %. It decreases as # of employees gets closer to 25 and it decreases as the average pay gets closer to $50000. Depending on the company status, there may be no monetary gain to the company, only a deduction of the estimated tax payment made by the Officers. Unfortunately, the additional govt. paperwork required due to Obamacare will eat up any savings made through the credit. My company President and I are sincerely hoping the new Congress can address some of the the worst points of the Health care disaster before it is too late. EVERYONE, from fellow HR managers, to various folks in private industry believes this bill was created to force employers to drop their plans so that the govt. could step in with single payer. I sat in a meeting with 400 other companies of all types and sizes concerning this and after the facts were laid out, the consensus was the only alternative was to drop coverage, especially for large employers as it would be more cost effective to pay the penalty than to pay for the increased cost of Insurance. Considering how bad the govt. is managing Medicare and Medicaid, do you really want to entrust your faith in them to provide you with the level of care you had before Obamacare? I don't. You won't receive the level of care we once enjoyed and will be paying much more than now.

The section I was thinking of wasn't part of the EJA, it was the establishment of the Center for Comparative Effectiveness Research (Division B, Title IV, Subtitle A) I was thinking of. Part of the law in this section allows multiple government agencies to bypass medical privacy acts. As far as giving the government say in care? Here is a quote from the bill as to the power given to the Secretary of Health and Human Resources

‘‘(B) to assess the continuity and coordination of care and care transitions for patients across providers and health care settings, including end of life care;

‘‘(F) to assess the efficiency and resource use in the provision of care;

So now the Secretary of Health and Human Services has the ability to make decisions as to the care you get based on the "efficiency and resource use". Cost based analysis on treatment versus cost. So they didn't title it the death panel, instead they call it the Center for Comparative Effectiveness Research.

What exactly about the Health Care Bill do you Tea Baggers hate so much? Do you dislike that kids can be covered on their parents insurance till age 26? Do you dislike that you cannot be refused care because of a pre-existing condition? Do you dislike that it is now illegal for an insurer to kick someone off of their policy because they get diagnosed with cancer, or diabetes, or some other disease? Are you upset that lifetime caps can no longer be imposed? Are you upset that now due to the pre-existing condition law, 11 million children have health insurance who otherwise would not because of their pre-existing conditions? Are you bothered by the fact that it is now law that an insurance company cannot deny coverage to a victim of domestic battery because domestic battery can no longer be considered a pre-existing condition? Are you for repealing those new laws?

willow- Thanks for the thoughtful response. I will respond to your points when I am back at work tomorrow and can pull up the article again. It's in the American Journal of Public Health and I may be able to explain better the methodology of the study to you when it is in front of me. All the articles I have seen attempting to discredit the study have been from firmly right-wing blogs and sources, and I have not agreed with their critiques for the most part. No study is perfect, but AJPH is very well thought of, and well-done research comes out of Harvard Med.

Joe- Insurance companies have this right now. If a person's doctor wants to perform various procedures or prescribe certain treatments, the insurance company has a hired physician who can say yes or no. The benefit of this is that it protects insurance companies from having to pay for "dolphin-assisted therapy" or some other non-empirically based treatment, but the drawback is that it protects the insurance company for having to pay for newer cutting-edge and expensive treatments that might save people's lives. At least the government won't drop you to improve its bottom line!

And the requirement for employers to put the amount they contribute to your health insurance will NOT cause you to be taxed on that amount. It is for informational purposes only, kind of like the section that says how much they have paid in on your SSI.

Basically, what they have done is used survival analysis on the data collected by the CDC from this survey: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nhanes/nhanes2007-2008/nhanes07_08.htm , the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to determine that after factoring out race/ethnicity, differences in income & education, BMI, tobacco and alcohol use, that those were uninsured were much more likely to die than those who had insurance. While no study is perfect, this one is pretty well done. Of the critiques I have read, they nitpick about stuff that is unimportant to the overall study, and most of them sound like they didn't even read the study, just didn't like the findings.

What is the correct way? Every president since Teddy Roosevelt tried to "find the correct way" and none succeeded. At least Obama got something done, even if it wasn't what everyone wanted (left or right.) To me that is the mark of a leader, one who gets the job done instead of worrying more about the political results. What are the "root causes of the high costs? How do you propose to fix them? Tort reform doesn't "fix" the problems of rising costs (it only stops biased juries from awarding outrageous settlements against the medical profession.) How is mandatory health insurance any more unconstitutional than mandatory auto insurance (or home insurance for a mortgage, etc.)? In today's world, every bit of commerce (including health insurance and health care) is now inter-state, and that makes it constitutional.

If you break down the percentages of people who are against the HCERC (HCR is the incorrect nomenclature for the Act), you will find that those against it are not against it for the same reason....some because they don't like the mandatory insurance, some because it doesn't really offer universal coverage, or because it isn't single payer, etc. Such polls are very misleading.

Since many of the sections of the bill don't even become active until 2014, how can you say the bill will do nothing to make insurance or healthcare affordable? Have you read all 2000+ pages of the final bill? Do you understand the "legalese" of the legislation? The CBO still says that it will reduce the cost of healthcare and budget deficits over the next 10 years and beyond. Plus, already the insurance companies can no longer deny you insurance for pre-existing conditions, cancel your insurance when you get sick, set maximum life-time limits on your coverage, etc.

So far all that is happened is the cost is rising. Not to mention it would be cheaper for companies to drop health care and pay a fine. So lets be honest what the real aim of this bill is. Looks like to me it was to force us into a government plan. As all of us will be screaming for health care once companies drop there coverage. I'll even wager that wages will never compensate for the dropping of the insurance. Democrats you really wrote a lame excuse of a health care plan.

Not exactly. auto insurance is only required for liability in most states. Full coverage may be required because your financial institution wants protection for their vehicle. Homeowners insurance is not required in any state. The mortgage company requires it to also protect their investment.

The high cost of medical care is directly related to the pissing contest between the insurance companies and the physicians, and it has been going on for a very long time. To show the insurance companies that phsyicians really are GOD, they are practicing lazy medicine. This in turn costs the insurance providers more money.

Go to the doctor with symptoms they are not familiar with, and cannot diagnose in a five minute time span. What you will receive is a referral to a "specialist," and good luck with that physician, as well. There was a time when doctors "practiced" medicine. That means they would hit the books and/or consult with other physicians to come up with a diagnosis and treatment for their patient. Now, they get their license, start a practice, let it grow to the point they cannot provide optimal medical care.

All of which is driven by the most powerful force on earth at this time....GREED!

Since 1980, Wealth in the US has grown from 8 trillion to 40 trillion. That works out to about $125,000 for every man woman and child in the country. A one-time 20% tax on US wealth would help solve the debt problem. The saved interest payments could be used for healthcare.

Also, everyone in the US gets a taxbreak under Obama's plan. The dollars earned after earning $250,000 would be taxed an extra 3%. In other words, the first $250,000 we all earn is taxed at the current rates.

Lazy medicine? No. What happened was the trail lawyers started suing and suing big. The jury started awarding huge settlements. Doctors are human and will make mistakes. Once the large settlements started rolling in, then the malpractice insurance went through the roof. This started the increase in medical costs. Up until that point, you could afford to go to the doctor for simple check ups and insurance was only used for emergency room visits, heart attacks, cancer, etc.

We are the ones that got greedy. We wanted the easy money. The trail lawyers provided the easy money. We wanted insurance to pay for everything.

Tort reform is needed and not just in malpractice cases. It is needed across the board. Bogus lawsuits have cost us in every aspect of our lives. Insurance is part of the overhead of running a business and that cost will be passed on to the consumers.

I heard someone speaking the other day about his wife that is from India. When she came here to go to school she initially intended on becoming an economist until one of her professors told her she should become a lawyer. When she told her family back in India that she was going to law school, their reaction was "why, you can't make any money being a lawyer"!

There was a trail lawyer in Houston that gave 9.5 million dollars to state democrats for the most recent election. This was personal money - money made by suing. I take two things from this:

1) How much money do you think this guy is worth if he can part with 9.5 million dollars?

2) Why is he spending this much to get democrats in office?

Until tort reform is tackled head on and seriously, nothing is going to change.

Insurance companies are disqualifying others for preexisting conditions still… the latest is pregnant women. Are you upset that now due to the pre-existing condition law, 11 million children have health insurance who otherwise would not because of their pre-existing conditions? Are you bothered by the fact that it is now law that an insurance company cannot deny coverage to a victim of domestic battery because domestic battery can no longer be considered a pre-existing condition? Are you aware that no hospital can deny treatment to a victim of a crime and needs emergency treatment? For you lefties… this is a free market system. You work, you get paid. No work…. No pay. Drop out of school because it wasn’t important to you… o well… go back then get a job. It is about personal responsibility… You are responsible for yourselves, not the government and certainly not the people.

I am not even a fan necessarily of the single-payer public option Obama orginally planned to do...im for a fan of the non-profit co-ops. A For-profit model will always worry about shareholders compensation before it will care about the people purchasing the insurance, thats reality. And thats not very good for the consumers.

The other question ive never understood, how am I only offered one option for insurance (whatever my employer offers) in a capitalist society? Isnt competition the name of the game? Isnt choice part of what dominated the conversation...as if we currently even have any? Wouldnt it make more sense that we shop for health insurance in the open market like we do car or auto insurance? It would make the rates more competitive.

The problem with that thing is...the whole "mandatory" aspect of insurance. When you remove the employer based structure, you remove a great deal of certainty about whether or not individuals would be responsible enough to purchase it without being required to. We still collectively pay the price for those who choose not to be insured, even though everyone likes to delusionally believe that "personal responsibility" actually exists. It's partly why our premiums keep rising, as employers can no longer afford to offer insurance...and as those people find they cant afford insurance on the open market...we find more and more being added to the uninsured, but all that means is they delay in getting the help they really need, until a small problem because a bigger more costly one...and its unlikely that uninsured person will ever be able to pay for their health care costs in an emergency. The hospitals dont simply pretend like those people dont exist, they bury the costs and push them onto us in the form of overbilling our insurance companies so that they are compensated for all the work they do...even when people cant pay.

I dont want to see health care reform done how it was...forcing people to do something rarely works. They have been trying to reform health care for quite some time with no luck - so that tells us that for at least the past 20 years, health care (the costs and burdens of it, to society) have been getting worse and worse...

At this point, I think we are about 10 years away from implosion. So I hope that Obama repeals the entire health care reform that he did...including all the parts that people like, such as not excluding people with pre-existing conditions. I dont want there to be anything that someone can say "well health care would have been fine if not for this..." nope, i want it to be just as it was...and then we'll see in 10 years how much health care costs are eating up our GDP and see how functional of a society we are.

Really, why would an employer wait for there to be fines, when they can just drop coverage now and pay nothing? Get at it companies...worry about your bottom line, no one can blame you! Without Obamacare, it will be interesting to hear the new excuses for slashed coverage, higher premiums and some employers dropping coverage all together.

Friends of mine two years ago paid 320.00 per mo for ins. Their new notice said 530.00 per mo and they canceled because they can't afford it anymore. What's it going to be next year, and healthcare is supposed to be affordable? The ins companies have to protect their profit margins because if they don't then wall street will take them down. I find it disheartening that adults feel that Medicare is earned by them. This was introduced by Ted Kennedy to serve the elderly. I was in the military at that time and was taken back when Medicare was introduced. I was in the military for many reasons, one of them the implied promise of medical care for life. Then Sen Kennedy pushed this medicare into reality. I earned my medical and all these complainers about the new health plan want medicare for themselves that was not earned, but legislated for them. But these same people will support nothing for the younger people who need medical care. Selfish, selfish. It appears that OUR country has developed a Horray for me and the H--- with everyone else attitude. I will take medicare that I did not earn, but I will not support anything for those who can not take care of themselves.

What you're using as a talking point is the reason many are against this bill. Mandated purchases like insurance, mandated safety like seatbelts/speed limits/helmets, etc are at the discretion of the states themselves. You're not convincing anyone who was against it with that statement.

This time round Obama should insist on one of the three options.

1) the scheme that all the senators have. (govern management structure already exists and can expand and improve on)

3) public option. (keep the body part industry in business with leaner CEO obscene pay packages)

They have been raising premiums at outrageous rates for the past several years with deregulation of the industry under the GOP, canceling policies for pre-existing conditions and for major illnesses even though you have continued to pay the ever increasing premiums, etc. The only "sensible" way to solve our healthcare system would have been to go to a single payer system with strict controls on what doctors can charge for their services and what the pharmaceuticals and equipment manufactures can gouge the citizenry with.

The "scheme" that Congress has is the same "scheme" that all federal employees have, which means that they simply have a "market basket" of plans to choose from for their insurance coverage. Their actual care isn't any different than the rest of the citizens (other than having their own "doctor" in the basement of the Capital.

It is in the Federal Government's best interests to have a healthy, viable work force. Our health care system is # 40 in the world, not number 1 as people seem to believe. We pay twice as much for the same services as others receive in other countries. Like it or not, we need reform in health care. $1200.00 a month for an otherwise healthy 60 year old male, or $500.00 a month for a 32 year old woman is obscene, yet those of you with health insurance coverage through your employers cannot see the problems in that picture. you have yours, so to heck with others.

It is the same with tax cuts, the GOP screams about the deficit, yet it would be half of what it is had the Bush tax cuts not gone through. Likewise, had Bush actually paid for his war with taxes, instead of borrowing, and paid attention to the financial, banking, and mortgage industry, we would not be ins this massive financial mess we are in now. Preexisting condition is when a person is diagnosed with a ailment by a physician. Insurance companies use a different definition: If a person gets sick no mater how long they had insurance they will try to show they had a preexisting condition. With cancer that would be death. How many children has to die of cancer because he insurance companies want to drop their insurance with they get a cancer that cost lost of money to cure. People can get dropped from insurance just by the fact they get sick. The person(s) who commented about forcing insurance companies to accept preexisting conditions better check his/her insurance policy about the ability to be dropped from the insurance.

Lets see....for the past 10 years my family health plan has cost around $13,000 per year for a total outlay of about $130,000. During that time my out of pocket costs and my insurance plan(s) payments totaled around $5000 . Seems to me as if this is all just a scam and should be outlawed instead of forced on everyone.

You read it correctly..He knew we didn't want it, but did it anyway. Somehow, he thought that he, Pelosi and Co would be forgiven. Even if all he had proclaimed had been true,(just for arguments sake...) they didn't listen. We don't want it. When did insurance companies become publically owned. They are not in business to cover everyone. They are in business to make money for their shareholders like any other business. Insurance companies are not a form of social welfare. They are privately owned. And just like the local pizza shop can refuse service they also have that right.

Ramming it through? It took the committees (3 House and 2 Senate) nearly two years to complete their work before the bill ever hit the floor of either house, and this was after 60+ years of working on the legislation by some people who have been in one house or the other for many of those 60+ years. It was actually a collection of bills studied by both parties over those 60+ years. While the GOP loved screaming that they had no voice in this bill, they actually did.....throughout the entire history of getting to the point of passing a final bill.

There is never a supermajority until you have at least 61 or 62 in your caucus and ALL of that caucus sticks together. Plus, with the Senate rules, supermajorities mean nothing with the "anonymous" block rule and filibusters. The GOP, especially in the Senate, did lots to stop legislation. That is why over 400 House passed bills are still languishing in the Senate.

...and it's a work in progress, so basically in a sense they signed things into law that haven't been written yet.

It is not the president's role to make law. That is the sole responsibility of Congress. However, as Boehner stated the president does set the agenda for the government. The public option doesn't control costs of delivering services. The person receiving the service might (big assumption) pay less, but the costs (vs. prices) of services isn't affected.

Mid term elections always bring out fewer voters, and the Right had an energized little band of voters who are not interested in any facts like the ones you list above. So this "the people have spoken" nonsense these other posters keep barking, is just that, nonsense.

Since 1980, Wealth in the US has grown from 8 trillion to 40 trillion. That works out to about $125,000 for every man woman and child in the country. A one-time 20% tax on US wealth would help solve the debt problem. The saved interest payments could be used for healthcare.

Also, everyone in the US gets a taxbreak under Obama's plan. The dollars earned after earning $250,000 would be taxed an extra 3%. In other words, the first $250,000 we all earn is taxed at the current rates.

I would like to remind you that one side of the story is not the complete story. If you were to list the Dems and liberal media/judges/etc. that served in the military as well, you might, just might, be able to make a valid point. Better yet would be to give us "# of liberals that served vs # of republicans". Then at least it wouldn't take 5 minutes of scrolling through to get to the end of your post.

The 30% that stayed home will come out for him before they will ever let a republican take back the white house and complete the destruction of our middle and working classes. Plus, the teabaggers are already getting thrown under the bus by the republicans now that there is no use for them so I would imagine they'll start running thier own candidates as a third party.

for the sake of the country i do hope the dems move towards the center. the prez-no hope for that. people are waking up to the fact that the Founding Fathers wrote the Constitution to limit the federal govt's powers and protect the citizen from the govt (not vice versa).

Perahps you should be railing about the fact that the people can't afford an extension on the tax cuts for the wealthiest 2% which will cost almost $800 billion over the next ten years and do nothing to help the economy or create jobs which is already a proven republican lie.

more that half the country opposes this bill. but the majority of people support the idea that reforms, not a takeover and new taxes, is needed to enable the uninsured to obtain it-if they desire to do so.
