However, regardless of the messenger, what she says is true. We are often too quick to forget about the hardships of other nations. I remember in the month after the quake we had commercials and celebrity phone banks. Everyone cared about Haiti, everybody wanted to do their part to help. But these situations take more than a month to fix. Haiti needs to be completely restructured; both the cities and the government have been destroyed. It would serve us all well if we could focus on an issue for more than a few weeks. What I'm saying is certainly not Haiti specific. The tsunami in '04, Katrina in '05, and various other world disasters have ended up the same way. I wish we could work on a problem until it's fixed. It's unfortunate that the world moves too fast for that.

Chicago - since you don't seem to understand the cause and effect of publicity and contributions. When a bad situation occurs, donations pour in quickly - then slow to a trickle quickly. The Poorer naitons plight is always much longer and harder to recover from. Charitable organizations are running out of funds and would thrilled if Bull Winkle would do a spot for them, as long as the flow returns.

Public figures have a number of reporters assigned to them to be there just in case something spectacular happens whether death or foot-in-mouth. Thje only reason this story even makes a page on the web is because of such reporters.

Example: Cindy McCain is on extended charitable aid missions several times a year to all parts of the world - some extremely dangerous. You don't hear of it, because no reporters are assigned to follow her. There are others in both parties that do these things - I chose to write about Cindy McCain because even though her husband was a presidential candidate - she is almost totally ignored - at least until her position on gays was revealed to be different than John McCain's.

Illuminati - I don't know if that is the game, but, that would be a pretty effective way to keep her name in the news. Furthermore, I don't know that all the reporters would go away - she would still be doing what she is now which is voice opinions, raise cash for causes, and campaign for people she likes.

I think she wants to run. I mean REALLY wants to run, but is counting the costs and timing the whole thing to gain the biggest bang for the effort. I also think she may be delaying to minimize the time everyone is in front of the Hubbell Telescope 1 mm away again - not that doing so would really make a huge difference.

Well rock-760945, I'm not quite sure that Sarah Palin's "corruption busting" was quite as big as some like to make it out to be. However, the oil "dividend" that the citizens of Alaska recieve every year is a point of contention for me.

While Sarah Palin and her Alaskan supporters might call the British Petroleum Relief Fund a "Chicago Style Shake-Down" or characterize other forms of government sponsored programs as socialist hand-outs; they all don't seem very bothered by their little yearly cut from the profits of the state's oil industry or the fact that most of the oil rich lands are leased from the federal government.

How does an Alaskan conservative reconcile that against the current politcal rhetoric? If that's not an example of a "government shake-down" than I don't know what is. Although, I suppose one could call it a business deal in which the state sold its residents support to the oil industry in exchange for yearly "welfare" payments.

Don't misunderstand, I do not begrudge Alaskans their good fortune. It is just that I find it strange that anyone could have a "no big government" agenda while collecting a yearly state mandated payment from a private corporation.

The permanent fund, my friend, was made so that it was out of government control; I had the honor of meeting the truly brilliant governor who initiated it (Jay Hammond). He and Wally Hickel (another brilliant independant, both recently dead) believed in the "owner state". If big oil was going to take away the minerals, why shouldnt the people benefit? It is a fund that can only be touched by the will of the people. The dividend comes from the funds investments, NOT the oil companies..Palin had no say in it whatsoever, except to announce the check that year, lol. Nor does any Alaskan governor really. Try reading sometime. Look under "Permanent Fund." Btw: both parties try to steal it every year: The Republicans, like you, try to call it welfare; the Democrats would rather spend it on a pet project that will benefit politicians...neither want the citizens to have it.

Well, I am neither Republican or Democrat but a little more familiar with that fund than one would think. It is a state mandated program that was created through constitutional amendment in the 1970's, etc.,etc. The money that continues to go into the fund for investment is part of the proceeds and royalties from oil and mineral sales. Spending Fund income is up to the state legislature and the payment of dividends to residents wasn't legislated until the 1980's.

Sarah Palin, during her term, supported a state tax increase on "big oil" and distributed some of the additional income to residents along with the fund dividend.

The original purpose of the program was to fund government/government projects and not to distribute dividends directly to the residents. So, we again go back to my earlier question: Why does Sarah Palin and her conservative supporters not consider this a form of socialism or welfare?

(Once again, I am not neccessarily knocking the concept of Citizen Dividends for public resources as it seems to be an interesting idea but let's look at it for what is and not make it out to be something different.)

You critics of Palin forget that she is appearing with Franklin Graham, who could get aid to the people who need it by circumventing the corrupt Haitian politicians and the likes of Clinton and Bush. It was easy to give Haitians attention in January, but it takes something extra to remember their even worse plight today.
