We need to secure the border and then provide a way for legal residency for current illegal immigrants.
Once illegal immigrants that are given this legal residency a condition of it should be that they never be allowed to gain citizenship, vote, or receive government aid. This would only be so they can legally work (pay taxes) and live here, if they want to gain American privileges they need to return to their nation of origin and enter the United States legally. Funding for enforcement of this should be taken from taxes on the income of workers that fall into this category.
The law is clear. If you want to deny citizenship to the American-born children of illegal aliens, you will have to pass a constitutional amendment. Any legislation that falls short of this will be, and should be, struck down as unconstitutional.
Illegals are taking jobs away from legal Americans. Employers that KNOWINGLY hire illegals need to be held accountable through increasingly tough fines up to shutting down the business. This would dry up the reason for coming here illegally.
The first time an illegal is caught in the country they should be held in a tent jail in the desert for 3 months. Sheriff Joe would be my choice to run the jail. If caught a second time a year in jail should be served. Their families back home would know there's no money coming in for months so the financial incentive is less for them to be illegal.

Here's a true story. 2 years ago, my son age 19 and white, tried to get a job harvesting fruit and they told him No, there were no jobs available for him. He also tried to get a job washing dishes at a local restaurant. They also turned him down, said they filled it already. He has since enrolled in the community 2 year college.
My other son age 19, just currently got hired at Target for seasonal work. He requested backroom position. He and 2 other young men are the only white, English speaking backroom workers out of 15. The other 13 only speak Spanish and all come from the same village in Mexico.

I'm an american, and I've done both. I'm not afraid of hard physical labor, never have been. Those people that keep saying americans won't do the jobs that illegals do are usually the only ones that won't take jobs that they think illegals are here doing. I also live in a predominantly hispanic neighborhood and know that not all of my legal and illegal hispanic neighbors are making peanuts working in a field. They all have good jobs, working as chefs making $15 an hour, working for landscapers, making sometimes $18 an hour- and I know how much they were making as my son also worked for a big landscaping company and was a foreman for about 16 mexicans. If you think they are here just working for $2 an hour, you have no idea what you are talking about. My illegal neighbor next door has 2 anchor babies, gets her rent paid for through rent subsidies and has a good job. (I'm sure) because she is bilingual she got a job working in the medical field last year and makes good money for someone that isn't even a legal citizen here. First, this is a terrible mangling of the English language; apparently the government assistance provided for illegals needs to be redirected into the education system.
Second, we are all descended from immigrants. The difference is, they were LEGAL immigrants. The issue is not with immigration in general, it is with illegal immigration. If you want to move to the United States, do it legally. Learn the language, take the classes, and pass the test. If we move to France, we are expected to learn their language. Here, instead of expecting illegals to learn English, we are expected to learn theirs. Instead of requiring immigrants to learn English, we have public schools, funded by the taxpayers, that teach basic subjects in Spanish to the children of parents not even paying those taxes. Election ballots are printed in several different languages. If you cannot understand English, you should not be allowed to vote. When our ancestors came here, they learned the language and made sure their children did too.
No one is saying immigration should be stopped, just that immigrants should have to follow the law. Instead, they get welfare, food stamps, and free education when they are here illegally, and the legal citizens (including legal immigrants) are paying for all of it.

The DREAM Act applies to children brought here by their illegal parents. These minors weren't even born here. So the constitutional change Teapublicans want to make isa separate issue in regard to automatic citizenship based on being born on American soil regardless of whether the parent(s) are here legally.

It is easy (certainly easier and less invasion of privacy than finger prints) and costs nothing. If illegals can't earn a living, they would have no choice but to leave on their own, and on their own dime.
Of course many illegals are self-employed. So E-verify would not work in these cases.

The first thing needed is making E-Verify the law in every state. Then each state needs to look at S.C. as a model to audit and fine companies, businesses and individuals that hire illegals. Under current U.S law there are so many loop holes that a company can use to get around paying fines for hiring illegals. Also the current fine is $250 for the first time a business is cited for hiring illegals. This should be boosted to $1000 per illegal found to be working at the time of the audit. Also instead of allowing the company to just fire the illegal the illegal's info should be gathered so that he can be arrested and deported instead of moving on to another job.
Take away most of the discretion that immigration judges have to deffer action and deport illegals immideiately after their due process is exhausted. Posts closed under the 2005 BRAC could be used to set up deportation camps instead of hoping that an illegal will turn up for his or her deportation when the time comes.
Fine Schools for not informing the Government when a person on a student Visa stops attending classes. Make the government more accountable as to who they give temp Visas to and how they track them. Fine employer sponsors the same way if they fire an employee, here on a temp Visa, and do not report it.
Enforce the 14th Amendment as intended by its writers. There is clear historic record that the writers of the 14th never intended for the children of illegals to be given citizenship. No, actually it doesn't. The pertinent part of the AMENDMENT states:
All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
Such concepts as "illegal aliens" and "anchor babies" did not exist, so were not addressed. In fact, before 1882 there was virtually no restriction on immigration into the U.S. and therefore the concept of "illegal immigration" did not exist at all.
So, whether you like it or not, the children of illegal immigrants born in the U.S. are citizens -- and GASP -- when they are old enough, even eligible to run for the presidency!
If you want it to be otherwise, then a Constitutional Amendment needs to be crafted and ratified. Don't count on it, because that would open another can of worms that many don't want. And now for the carrots ...
1. Lighten visa standards for guest/seasonal workers. This would benefit all parties -- the workers could come here legally, do their jobs, get paid and freely come and go. Their working conditions and rights would also be protected. Employers would not have to worry about running afoul of the law and could count on reliable workers. The government would get taxes.
2. Allow those successfully completing X number of years as a guest worker apply for permanent status leading to citizenship. This would come attached with language requirements and no criminal activity.
3. Reward employers who use the guest worker programs as opposed to hiring illegally.
A change to the Constitution is required to prevent children born in the US of illegal aliens from gaining US citizenship as right by birth. It would constitue a travesty to separate a young child from their parents as we deport the illegal parents back to their country of origin - the child must go back with their parent. We can not allow the child of illegal aliens the right to US Citizenship and then backdoor us with that citizenship to allow the parents to remain. Then it cascades to extended family etc

Turn them into whom? The authorities already know they are here, and as it stands, as long as they aren't breaking the law with criminal activity, no one is going to do a thing about it, period. Most of the hardcore supporters for these amnesty programs will come on and post there little open borders hug an illegal rhetoric and then run away from all the questions posed to them. Not one of them when asked could answer the hard questions like
Why should the parents who brought their kids with them benefit from their illegal act and their illegal status?
Why should the tax payer be on the hook to pay for the loans that would be taken out by these illegals for their continued education with no recourse to be taken against them if they defaulted on the loans?
Why would the Secretary of Homeland Security be given the power to waiver any of the requirements in the Act?
Why would three time convicted criminals be allowed to enter into the program?
What recourse did the Bill have for those that did not complete college within the ten years allotted?
What recouse did the Bill state for those that were booted out of the military?
Why didn't the Bill require the applicant to gain a degree or some kind of advanced certificate?
Who would pay for the mandatory physicals required in the Bill?
If I was so adamant about supporting something I would have at least picked a Bill that I could support or request that my Reps in Congress made amendments to fix those problems. Instead Reid, Pelosi and company didn't want any amendments and wanted to force this down the tax payers throats.
Around July we will see what happens to Arizona's illegal alien employment law. The Snopes page you referred readers is, in part, based on 15-year-old information and was published almost five years ago. Second, most of us are not against immigrants. Yes, some are bigoted asses, but the majority of us only want people to come here to live and work legally, pay taxes and not be a drain on the system.
Third, the majority of illegal immigrants do NOT pay taxes or social security. If they ARE paying social security, it is because they a have fraudulently obtained a social security number. They do not have, what is know in the legal system as "clean hands". Therefore, they are not entitled to the money.

Not really. Last time I checked, and unless it changed overnight, immigrants in the service are legal. They have an SSN and pay taxes. If you do not want to enlist, there are other legal channels. Immigration is not the problem, ILLEGAL immigration is.

with regards to our current economic problems, of course it is not "all the illegals fault". They do however play a major role in the problems we currently face. They use infrastructure which is not paid for and take a disproportionate amount of welfare and medical costs which are passed onto Americans.
Our nation has always welcomed new citizens, and there has always been a process by which a person applies for and qualifies for citizenship. Just being born here is not sufficient.

But more controversial measures such as attempts to deny citizenship to children of people who are in the U.S. without permission could be tempered by GOP leaders aware of the need to curry more favor with Hispanic voters.
This whole article was based on the correlation between the Hispanic community and illegal immigration. Perhaps you should direct your concern at MSNBC. Here is the fact, the majority of illegal aliens come from Mexico and Latin America. So, yes, when we talk of illegal immigrants, most of it is addressing the problem coming through our southern border. Who is championing open borders and illegal immigrants in our congress the most? The Hispanic Caucus.
We don't need a constitutional amendment regarding the 14th amendment regarding birthright citizenship. It is not being enforced as to its original intent.
Are Children Born of Illegal Immigrants US Citizens?

A common misconception is that the Constitution through the Fourteenth Amendment confers citizenship upon everyone born in the United States whether or not they were born to an illegal alien. Actually, the Constitution itself does not provide citizenship to those born of illegal parents; the Supreme Court only said it did in an 1898 decision known as ‘U.S. v. Wong Kim Ark’, and it is politically correct to accept this Supreme Court decision while ignoring others.
The problem is that the court majority in the Wong Kim Ark case, as is so often today, ‘made law’ according to their personal beliefs and not what those that wrote the Constitution (or in this case, the 14th Amendment) actually intended at the time it was written. Justice Horace Gray, who wrote the majority decision in the Wong Kim Ark case, reveals exactly what the majority was up to by avoiding discussion about the intention of the clause by the two Senators most responsible for the language of the Fourteenth Amendment, Senators Jacob M. Howard and Lyman Trumbull.
It is clear the court majority in this case recognized the only reasonable way to come to the conclusion they wanted was to ignore the recorded legislative history left behind by the writers of the amendment. Justice Gray acknowledged this when he wrote:
"Doubtless, the intention of the congress which framed, and of the states which adopted, this amendment of the constitution, must be sought in the words of the amendment, and (sic)[but] the debates in congress are not admissible as evidence to control the meaning of those words."
Justice John Paul Stevens disagreed with this attempt by the Wong Kim Ark majority to rewrite the Constitution:
"A refusal to consider reliable evidence of original intent in the Constitution is no more excusable than a judge's refusal to consider legislative intent."
Justice Gray and the court majority refused to consider both the original intent and legislative history behind the words because they knew it would be fatal to their pre-determined intent of reversing what Congress had inserted into the US Constitution by the fourteenth amendment so they avoided what senators Howard and Trumbull wrote and said.
Why did Justice Gray avoid the legislative history and the original intent of those writing the 14th amendment?
Well the first major hurdle Senator Howard presented to the court majority in this case is that he specifically declared the clause to be by "virtue of natural law" and national law only recognized citizenship by birth to those who were not subject to some other foreign power. The Senator also stated when he introduced the amendment:
“The clause [the citizenship clause section 1] specifically excludes all persons born in the United States who are foreigners, aliens, and persons who belong to the families of ambassadors or foreign ministers accredited to the Government of the United States, but will include every other class of persons."
It seems clear that the amendment only applies to American citizens (natural law), regardless of their race - which is exactly what was intended. Remember, the amendment was written after the Civil War with the intent to acknowledge the citizenship of those who had been slaves, not foreigners subject to national laws of other countries and not already citizens of the United States.
The court majority had an even bigger problem to impose their will on American citizens because Senator Howard also said in May, 1868, that the "Constitution as now amended, forever withholds the right of citizenship in the case of accidental birth of a child belonging to foreign parents within the limits of the country."
* Senator Trumbull, the co-author, additionally presents a problem for the court majority by declaring:
"The provision is, that ‘all persons born in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens.’ That means 'subject to the complete jurisdiction thereof.' What do we mean by 'complete jurisdiction thereof?' Not owing allegiance to anybody else. That is what it means."
Sen. Howard followed that up by stating that:
"The word 'jurisdiction,' as here employed, ought to be construed so as to imply a full and complete jurisdiction on the part of the United States, whether exercised by Congress, by the executive, or by the judicial department; that is to say, the same jurisdiction in extent and quality as applies to every citizen of the United States now."
Illegal aliens and visitors do not enjoy the same quality of jurisdiction as a citizen of the United States. Can an alien be tried for Treason against the United States? Senator Howard clearly intended that the phrase "subject to the jurisdiction" does not apply to anyone other than American citizens. The writer, John A. Bingham, of the 14th amendment’s first section, considered the proposed national law on citizenshipas
"simply declaratory of what is written in the Constitution, that every human being born within the jurisdiction of the United States of parents not owing allegiance to any foreign sovereignty is, in the language of your Constitution itself, a natural born citizen..."
Ironically, the Supreme Court had already decided the meaning of the 14th amendment's citizenship clause before the Wong Kim Ark case, and unlike the majority in the Wong Kim Ark court, did consider the intent and meaning of the phrase“subject to the jurisdiction”. In the Slaughterhouse cases [Slaughterhouse Cases Butchers' Benevolent Association of New Orleans v. The Crescent City Livestock Landing and Slaughterhouse Co. (1873)] the court noted that
"[t]he phrase, 'subject to its jurisdiction' was intended to exclude from its operation children of ministers, consuls, and citizens or subjects of foreign States born within the United States."
Even the dissenting minority in the Slaughterhouse cases affirmed that the citizenship clause was designed to ensure that all persons born within the United States were both citizens of the United States and the state in which they resided, provided they were not at the time subjects of any foreign power.
Another Supreme Court decision [Elk v. Wilkins (1884)] correctly determined that
"subject to the jurisdiction"of the United States required "not merely subject in some respect or degree to the jurisdiction of the United States, but completely subject to their political jurisdiction, and owing them direct and immediate allegiance."
America's own naturalization laws from the very beginning never recognized children born to aliens to be anything other than aliens if the parents had not declared their allegiance to the United State - a sure sign that the framers intended children under national law followed the citizenship of their father until he had become naturalized. Also of interest, Justice Fuller, chief justice of the court in the Wong Kim Ark case, said,
“The words 'subject to the jurisdiction thereof,' in the amendment, were used as synonymous with the words 'and not subject to any foreign power.”
He was absolutely correct.
Considering both the legislative and language history behind the citizenship clause (14th Amendment, Section 1) – and the courts own stated objective in reaching the conclusion they did while also taking into account two prior Supreme Court holdings - leaves the Wong Kim Ark ruling completely worthless. The decisions in the Slaughterhouse and Elk cases are still the only controlling case law that is fully supported by the history and language behind the citizenship clause as found in the first section of the 14th amendment, and it should be so today.

The second part of the first sentence of Section 1 may need to be scrutinized. It is an inclusive statement that clearly defines the conditions required for automatic citizenship. It suggests that all of the prerequisites be met, not just one or two, but all of them.
If we're going to use the Constitution for our decision making process, we must use it all, not just the words we pick and choose to satisfy our own opinions.
Not only must the child be born in the United States, but he or she must also be subject to the jurisdiction thereof. If the parents of the child are not under the jurisdiction of the United States (illegally in country), then how can the unborn child be under the jurisdiction of the Constitution? The unborn child is under the same jurisdiction as the parents which would be the country they hail from, not the host country.
If the parents are here legally by way of visa or any other "legal" permission and have a child while legally in this country, then yes the child could be deemed a legal citizen of the United States.
Either way, I can see no logical reason why our government feels it is responsible for supporting that child or it's parents just because it is born here. Our government didn't feel the need to support my children, why is it they feel the need to support all the illegals?
More importantly, why do the illegal aliens feel it is the responsibility of our government to automatically support them?

It's time to secure our border with Mexico for two reasons. First to slow the drug, and human smuggling traffic to a point where it's not that profitable. Second to assure those criminal illegal aliens that have been caught, and deported can't just walk back into our country to continue victimizing American citizens.

Former U.S. Border Patrol Supervisor David Stoddard has responded to this by stating "Posse Comitatus prohibits the use of troops for domestic law enforcement. Border security is not domestic law enforcement. It is protecting our nation from foreign intruders." He also points out that the army patrolled the border for more than 46 years after the passage of the Posse Comitatus act.[15
Now how do we handle those illegal aliens that are already here? Simple, every social security card holder must have their thumbprint on their card, and on record with the agency. Then every employer has to submit an employment application with the thumbprint of every employee. The same should be done with everyone registering their children for school, using emergency room services, applying for any tax based social service programs, stopped for a traffic violation, voting, etc. That way we'll know everyone is who they say they are! This would eliminate the racism card the misguided like to play on this subject!
Those caught with no criminal records could apply to a new immigration program created for special circumstances, "after the border is secured".

This is where the impact of Republican control of the House of Representatives is revealed. Since legislation is supposed to originate in the House of Representatives, then go to the Senate, and finally to the President for signing (or veto), the Republicans, with a simple majority, will pass lots of good sounding legislation, like tougher immigration laws, which the Democrats in the Senate will try to block, or Obama may have to veto. This will be a politically precarious time for the Democrats in the Senate where they have 23 seats to defend in 2012 vs only 11 Senate seats for the Republicans (Democrats recently lost 37% of their Senate seats up for grabs, the Republicans lost none). Obama will also have to defend any veto of popular legislation prior to his re-election bid.
Requiring employers to E-Verify work eligibility for their employees (over 99% accurate) would be a good start, and without jobs, illegal immjigrats will self-deport themselves. Miss American Latina - with all due respect I'd like to tell you a story. I am half Cherokee and the other side arrived in 1714 to settle farmland in WV. So my family has been here for a long time and have been very poor at times. Every generation of males in my family has served in the armed forces in every major war we have had including the American Revolution. We have earned a voice as tried and true Americans. So please do not give me any info on how I am also descended from immigrants. My Native American roots go back 1000s of years.
What I'd like to share with you is my first home I bought. I just worked my way through school, got a great job, and was engaged. Bought a house in a nice Northern VA/DC suburb. Understanding I was thrilled and for five years not a problem. Over those years a number of illegal immigrants started buying up homes (7-8 people responsible for the mortgage) and nearly 20 + people living in a tiny house. After the fourth year MS-13 gang moved in. Yes, the real gang. Within that year we had 7 drive by shootings, arson, drug deals galore. I could no longer leave my house without being armed with mace and couldn't walk my dogs anymore or enjoy the park. The worst was the dog fights. So many awful nights of hearing that. Also, the shooting of the guns off in the middle of the night. I couldn't dialogue with these "neighbors" because no one....I MEAN NO ONE....spoke English. It was awful. In the end we were forced to flee. I sold the home to 12 people who didn't speak English and moved away.
So in the end I want to point out my problems with illegals. They are criminals in so many ways. I don't hate immigrants, but want them to WANT to be American. Assimilate. Also, please stop gaining the system in terms of housing, stealing IDs, welfare, child care (one family hate 15 children). Also, before you say why didn't you call the police...well as previous poster so pointedly said.....the police hands are tied. I got help once from Animal Control on the fights, but they just went out and bought another dog.

PS - There has never been a real test of the concept of 'citizenship by birth' for children of illegal immigrants, and we need this issue addressed by the Supreme Court. All of the existing case law has dealt with children born to LEGAL immigrants - look up the case law for yourself.

Our total GDP for 2009 was $14.3 trillion and Consumer spending equalled approx. $10.1 trillion. In the USA Today article the author said that $9 Billion dollars was paid into Social Security because of 9 million mismatched w-2s. They pointed out that mismatched did not mean illegal but lets assume they all were. Since social security tax is 6.2% and employers have to match dollar for dollar then 9 million mismatched w-2s resulted in a total of $500 per filer paid into Social Security. At that rate all 9 million filers averaged a yearly income of approx $8,000.
Please tell the audience how 9,000,000 people making $8,000 in income would cause $1.8 trillion in spending to disappear. Keep in mind these are your posts so you are guaranteeing their accuracy right????

Many Americans already do work in the fields, and many (and I do mean many) Americans clean hotel rooms. I agree with both of you. Americans will do any job as long as the pay is right. If all the illegals were gone tomorrow most employers would come up with the extra money to pay for the additional labor costs.

OK the FACT is that any undocumented worker (read illegal alien) that is paying social security taxes has obtained a social security number FRAUDULENTLY. That means they do not have, in legal parlance, "clean hands". So even if they "pay in", they are not entitled to get any money.
But that makes up only a very small percentage of illegal aliens. In the meantime, just as an example, our school systems are educating their children. I doubt they are paying the property taxes and state income taxes that support the schools.
Bottom line, if you want to come to this country, work and be a productive, tax paying citizen -- you are welcome. IF you do it legally.

Farms can get legal guest worker labor through the H-2A guest worker program. There are plenty of people from around the world that would be happy to work in the United States for a year or two in order to earn money to provide better lives for their families.

(For example, a farmer in Washington said that he used to have to hope that enough illegal immigrant labor would show up to harvest his apple crops...but now he contracts in advance for 150 Jamaican legal guest-workers to work on his farm).

Lets look at that tired old fairy tale about lettuce costing $5 per head. In Calif. the Agriculture Dept at U.C. Davis did an extensive report on the costs for growing and taking to market various fruits and vegetables. The report wasn't designed for immigration however since it was done in an unbiased and in depth manner it is perfect for showing how ignorant most people are when it comes to what a farm operator would have to pay in labor costs to make a head of lettuce $5.
Per U.C. Davis an average farm in an average year growing lettuce will have a crop of approx 800 cartons of lettuce per acre with each carton holding 24 heads of lettuce. In 2008 and 2009 the going piece rate for picking, packing, palletizing and wrapping a carton of lettuce was $3.15 per carton or just under $0.13 per head of lettuce. The study showed the farmer with this average crop would make approx $600 dollars per acre if he sold the lettuce at $.50 per head after all his costs were taken out.
Total cost to the middleman for transportation, loading and unloading etc. and the final store markup costs the consumer approx $1.10 per head. To make this a $5 head of lettuce a picker would have to charge $4.03 per head of lettuce picked. Not carton but head.
Even if the laborer only picked 2 cartons an hour. That is one head of lettuce per minute for 48 minutes and then took a break for 12 minutes per hour he or she would be making $193.44 an hour. For that kind of money there would never be a shortage of farm workers. Everybody would want to be a vegetable picker. So that ridiculous argument is just that, ridiculous.

As a democrat I guess this brings up a good point, how is it that the southern states appear to be more economically viable than the rust belt? Does the South have more jobs or is it just because it finds itself in a squeeze play between Mexico and the economic decline in the North that it is rapidly growing? wje37fcsm, the annual number of green cards the U.S. gives is 1 MILLION. With that high of a number, how is our immigration laws broken? We need quotas for a reason. Keep in mind, the Great Wave was about 500K a year. Already 1 million is too high, add illegal aliens on top of that we are looking at a population explosion. The number of illegals in this country is more than the population of Florida. You want to know what's going on? California is bankrupt, hospitals closing, schools over-crowded, social services being used, trying to accommodate all the illegals and rampant flow from the southern border- all on the taxpayers dime. I don't think many will disagree with you that the immigration system needs to be fixed, however just ignoring the laws isn't fixing anything. We need to start with enforcement to get things under control and then revise the immigration laws & quotas.

The DREAM act is a bit of a quagmire as far as I'm concerned. The children it speaks to covering are stuck in a donut hole through no doing of their own- they didn't ask to be brought here and weren't given the option to stay behind, often they've known no other home than the US and don't have someplace to go back to. Ultimately I have no objection to extending citizenship to those who have grown up here, kept a clean record and chosen to serve our country through military service. If you're willing to put your butt on the line so that myself and others can sleep more safely at night, you've earned your path to citizenship. I disagree, though, when the DREAM act gets to the part about granting citizenship to those completing SOME college education. Somehow that just doesn't sit well, especially with so many illegals getting tuition breaks that are not available to legal citizens. If the DREAM act were to, say, require graduation and set tuition levels at the non-resident level, exclude the student from government backed student loans or require repayment in full of the government backed loan in order to obtain legal citizenship then I might reconsider, but as it stands now, I'd like to personally thank everyone who voted it down. Stop making it attractive to cross the border illegally, start enforcing the laws we have on the books and see who's still here in 5 years, then we can talk about the next step

I don't think that the babies of the illegals should get anything from us. Most of them know that they are illegal themselves but don't do anything about it so why should we give them anything? If they want citizenship for themselves, let them put themselves in harms way like our brave soldiers are doing, for the illegals freedom to protest in our streets, then give them citizenship when their time is over. But also what should be in their paperwork is a statement that they will not bring over or try to make their illegal relatives legal. The argument always seems to fall into the "we're too proud" category. This argument fails miserabley.
I cleaned toilets to put myself through college. The point is, I wasn't too proud to do it, just had a higher goal in mind. When I graduated, I got the job I set my sights on, and quit cleaning toilets as a means of income. I earned the right to allocate my resources, if I choose, and hire someone (legally) to do certain things for me. Of coarse, I'm too cheap to do so.
On the other hand, if someone elses ambitions reach no higher than cleaning toilets all of their life, they also have my blessing. Some people find an opportunity. I personally know of people who started the same way and now have a business cleaning toilets that employ many people. Waste Management started with one guy and one garbage truck. That man was a white, natural born citizen guy who wasn't too proud to handle garbage.
The toilet cleaning argument loses crdibility, too, when you take into account the many non-immigrants who regularly collect our garbage, operate our sewage systems, or the many plumbers who are paid to stick their hands in your toilet. THEY ARE NOT TOO PROUD, they are just determined to be paid commensurate with their skills.

I love this argument. It's a pathetic attempt to ignore the truth. This is a market economy. Both in goods and services.
The work you do for an employer is a service he pays you for. If he can get the service he needs for $6 an hour he'll take it. If he can't get it for $6 an hour he'll pay more until it reaches an amount people are willing to take.
If you get Jose from Mexico who will provide the employer his services for $6 an hour it stops there. And that is what happens with illegal aliens. They take far less than a U.S. citizen needs and so the wages are depressed. If the illegal aliens were not here the jobs for mowing and toilet cleaning would pay more and low income U.S. citizens would take them and more and get paid a decent wage.

We don't need to repeal anything. The key phrase in the amendment is "subject to the jurisdiction" if you are in the country illegally, you are not subject to our jurisdiction you are subject to the jurisdiction of your home country and should be returned there as soon as possible. Read the speeches of the people who introduced the amendment, it was not to apply to tourists, how could it possibly be applied to persons in the country illegally?

The word "or" gives a choice between "born" or "naturalized" (first requirement), but the operative word here is "and" which makes the need to be under the jurisdiction thereof" an additional pre-requisite. That second pre-requisite was most likely set to help eliminate the problems and confusion we are experiencing today. It has just been overlooked for so long it has become invisible to those who don't want to see it.

This statement has two parts:
"All persons born or naturalized in the United States" (First condition).
"and" (Clear indication that a second requirement follows).

TamL, the use of the conjunction (or) was to give the choice between the two options in the first part of the sentence. Look at the complete sentence again. There are "two" conditions clearly stated and the word "and" clearly delineates them and makes them "inclusive", not optional. The word "or" gives the option between two choices for the "first" pre-requisite. The word "and" clearly indicates a second requirement.
Both pre-requisites are met if the parents are in the U. S. legally and have a child while they are here. At that point I believe the parents have the option of declaring their child a U.S. Citizen.

You're absolutely right. I have been turned down for jobs I was qualified for because I wasn't biligual. Since when does getting a job in this country depend on whether or not you can speak spanish? I thought it was the other way around--if you go to a different country to live, you are supposed to learn the language of that country. But not here! Here we are expected to learn immigrants languages (whether they are legal or illegal). I wonder how many jobs don't go to Americans who aren't biligual? Anyone have any statistics?

I have a friend who lived in Miami, she went to the post office (a part of the federal government) in a predominately Cuban part of town. In the post office, they refused to speak to her in English. If an American refused to speak (or get a translator) for a Latino, it would be all over the news. I wonder how many times Spanish speakers refuse to accomodate English speakers? It's outrageous!
It just shows the lopsided huge number of Spanish speakers that have come over in the last decade and have not assimilated compared to history's vast number of immigrants from all other countries world-wide have assimilated and do speak English.

Lets look at that tired old fairy tale about lettuce costing $5 per head. In Calif. the Agriculture Dept at U.C. Davis did an extensive report on the costs for growing and taking to market various fruits and vegetables. The report wasn't designed for immigration however since it was done in an unbiased and in depth manner it is perfect for showing how ignorant most people are when it comes to what a farm operator would have to pay in labor costs to make a head of lettuce $5.
Per U.C. Davis an average farm in an average year growing lettuce will have a crop of approx 800 cartons of lettuce per acre with each carton holding 24 heads of lettuce. In 2008 and 2009 the going piece rate for picking, packing, palletizing and wrapping a carton of lettuce was $3.15 per carton or just under $0.13 per head of lettuce. The study showed the farmer with this average crop would make approx $600 dollars per acre if he sold the lettuce at $.50 per head after all his costs were taken out.
Total cost to the middleman for transportation, loading and unloading etc. and the final store markup costs the consumer approx $1.10 per head. To make this a $5 head of lettuce a picker would have to charge $4.03 per head of lettuce picked. Not carton but head.
Even if the laborer only picked 2 cartons an hour. That is one head of lettuce per minute for 48 minutes and then took a break for 12 minutes per hour he or she would be making $193.44 an hour. For that kind of money there would never be a shortage of farm workers. Everybody would want to be a vegetable picker. So that ridiculous argument is just that, ridiculous.

Exactly right. The way to solve the illegal alien problem needs to be taken in three steps. First, CONTROL THE BORDER! Second, end ALL entitlements for ilegal aliens and their familys( this also includes printing applications for such aid to be printed in english only). Third, enforce the laws againsts knowingly employing illegal aliens and giving the enforcment teeth. (If you shut down the companies that flaunt our laws fewer will take the risk). With no free crap and no employment there will be no need to deport anyone, there will be a line of ilegal aliens streaming south that might be visible from space. This will also lower the unemplyment rate a few percentage points. All it takes is some politicians will the nerve to do it and an electorate backing them up at the polls.

You forgot, Make E-Verify mandatory for all employers and heavily fine employers that hire them. Get rid of the job magnet as well as the social services, and enforce the birthright citizenship clause as it was intended (children of foreigners are not subject legal citizens) they'll self-deport.
Close the border, enforce existing laws on the books at all levels, (not just fed enforcement), and eliminate the ability to name your city a "sanctuary" city.

I'm also in favor of making English the national language as long as we also require that our schools teach every child a second language. We'd save a fortune every year in government paperwork that doesn't need to translated and paying 10% extra an hour to bi-lingual CSR's for programs like Medicare and Social Security. Being able to communicate with other people is key to understanding them, but to many people come to the U.S. and want it to adopt their ways instead of melting into the cultural pot themselves. P.S. Illegal Immigrants should be sent back to wherever they come from along with their babies. Citizenship to babies is for immigrants that have legally entered this country. Its really a simple concept. Why does it have to be such a complicated issue?
No one is saying that we shouldn't learn a foreign language but by all means, it shouldn't have to be Spanish, and we must remember, ENGLISH is the language of global commerce as well as the customary language of the U.S. that all prior immigrants did learn when coming here. We need to secure the border and then provide a way for legal residency for current illegal immigrants.
Once illegal immigrants that are given this legal residency a condition of it should be that they never be allowed to gain citizenship, vote, or receive government aid. This would only be so they can legally work (pay taxes) and live here, if they want to gain American privileges they need to return to their nation of origin and enter the United States legally. Funding for enforcement of this should be taken from taxes on the income of workers that fall into this category.
The law is clear. If you want to deny citizenship to the American-born children of illegal aliens, you will have to pass a constitutional amendment. Any legislation that falls short of this will be, and should be, struck down as unconstitutional.

I couldn't agree with you more. It is time our young people experience the "labor jobs." It's hard work that puts the drive in a person to better themselves. It's obviously working for the illegal immigrant families - Dems wanted to give illegal "college students" a pathway to citizenship. So this tells me illegals want to better themselves through education.
Here's a true story. 2 years ago, my son age 19 and white, tried to get a job harvesting fruit and they told him No, there were no jobs available for him. He also tried to get a job washing dishes at a local restaurant. They also turned him down, said they filled it already. He has since enrolled in the community 2 year college.
My other son age 19, just currently got hired at Target for seasonal work. He requested backroom position. He and 2 other young men are the only white, English speaking backroom workers out of 15. The other 13 only speak Spanish and all come from the same village in Mexico.
This is true! And this is what needs to be exposed. This is not an agricultural job, this is Target backroom, unloading merchandise. What young American citizen wouldn't want an entry level job like that?

I'm an american, and I've done both. I'm not afraid of hard physical labor, never have been. Those people that keep saying americans won't do the jobs that illegals do are usually the only ones that won't take jobs that they think illegals are here doing. I also live in a predominantly hispanic neighborhood and know that not all of my legal and illegal hispanic neighbors are making peanuts working in a field. They all have good jobs, working as chefs making $15 an hour, working for landscapers, making sometimes $18 an hour- and I know how much they were making as my son also worked for a big landscaping company and was a foreman for about 16 mexicans. If you think they are here just working for $2 an hour, you have no idea what you are talking about. My illegal neighbor next door has 2 anchor babies, gets her rent paid for through rent subsidies and has a good job. (I'm sure) because she is bilingual she got a job working in the medical field last year and makes good money for someone that isn't even a legal citizen here. So please, quit speculating on things you know very little about.

First, this is a terrible mangling of the English language; apparently the government assistance provided for illegals needs to be redirected into the education system.
Second, we are all descended from immigrants. The difference is, they were LEGAL immigrants. The issue is not with immigration in general, it is with illegal immigration. If you want to move to the United States, do it legally. Learn the language, take the classes, and pass the test. If we move to France, we are expected to learn their language. Here, instead of expecting illegals to learn English, we are expected to learn theirs. Instead of requiring immigrants to learn English, we have public schools, funded by the taxpayers, that teach basic subjects in Spanish to the children of parents not even paying those taxes. Election ballots are printed in several different languages. If you cannot understand English, you should not be allowed to vote. When our ancestors came here, they learned the language and made sure their children did too.
No one is saying immigration should be stopped, just that immigrants should have to follow the law. Instead, they get welfare, food stamps, and free education when they are here illegally, and the legal citizens (including legal immigrants) are paying for all of it.
So how do you all suggest the rounding up, identification, and verification of undocumented people in the US and deportation of those found to be here outside of legal immigration laws be paid for? Are you willing to pay higher taxes to fund this work?

Securing the border first is always the problem to making any change in immigration. Unless we are willing to militarize the border, the border will always be too porous. Are we willing to do that?
Also, though citizenship requirements are becoming more lenient in countries around the world, no European country allows citizenship for illegals based on birth in the country. Every immigrant must become a citizen in a legal way when they turn 18.
The DREAM Act applies to children brought here by their illegal parents. These minors weren't even born here. So the constitutional change Teapublicans want to make isa separate issue in regard to automatic citizenship based on being born on American soil regardless of whether the parent(s) are here legally.
But as stated, it always comes back to the border. Any leniency is likely to result in a new flood across the border. Liberals hearts are in the right place, but the unintended consequences are not.
In the meantime (to answer the post above), the article discusses a law that all employers must E-verify social security numbers. It is easy (certainly easier and less invasion of privacy than finger prints) and costs nothing. If illegals can't earn a living, they would have no choice but to leave on their own, and on their own dime.
Of course many illegals are self-employed. So E-verify would not work in these cases.

The first thing needed is making E-Verify the law in every state. Then each state needs to look at S.C. as a model to audit and fine companies, businesses and individuals that hire illegals. Under current U.S law there are so many loop holes that a company can use to get around paying fines for hiring illegals. Also the current fine is $250 for the first time a business is cited for hiring illegals. This should be boosted to $1000 per illegal found to be working at the time of the audit. Also instead of allowing the company to just fire the illegal the illegal's info should be gathered so that he can be arrested and deported instead of moving on to another job.
Take away most of the discretion that immigration judges have to deffer action and deport illegals immideiately after their due process is exhausted. Posts closed under the 2005 BRAC could be used to set up deportation camps instead of hoping that an illegal will turn up for his or her deportation when the time comes.
Fine Schools for not informing the Government when a person on a student Visa stops attending classes. Make the government more accountable as to who they give temp Visas to and how they track them. Fine employer sponsors the same way if they fire an employee, here on a temp Visa, and do not report it.
Enforce the 14th Amendment as intended by its writers. There is clear historic record that the writers of the 14th never intended for the children of illegals to be given citizenship. If Obama and the Dems want to make that a 2012 Political Statement they will loose much of the Independent as well as the moderate Dem vote. Not only will it cost the Dems in the Senate but will loose them more seats in the House and that onePolitical Platform could cost Obama any chance at Re-election.
Give illegals a 90 day notice that if they leave willingly they will be able to keep all their posessions otherwise put a law in place that equates the posessions of an illegal to those of a drug dealer and confiscate all their posession (except clothes, personal photos, personal papers, etc) and auction them off to help defray the costs of deportation.
Although he would definitely get the majority of the latino vote if he makes a stand on the issue; however the current voters are the ones he has to worry about in 2012. Bucking the majority got his party and azz kicking in 2010 bucking it again on giving illegals amnesty could very well be his and the Dems undoing.
I would want Congress to spend $130 billion on deporting all the illegals. If that is what it would take to get rid of them then Im all for it even if it was added to the deficit it would be well worth the cost. However with a few tightening of laws already in place most of the illegals would find they can no longer leech off the American tax payer and would self deport.

1. Enforcing CURRENT law!
2. Not only securing the borders -- yes, borders with an "s" -- but tracking those who enter the country legally and overstay their visas.
3. Impose additional punishment BESIDES deportation to illegals (I liked the tent idea proposed earlier).
And now for the carrots ...
1. Lighten visa standards for guest/seasonal workers. This would benefit all parties -- the workers could come here legally, do their jobs, get paid and freely come and go. Their working conditions and rights would also be protected. Employers would not have to worry about running afoul of the law and could count on reliable workers. The government would get taxes.
2. Allow those successfully completing X number of years as a guest worker apply for permanent status leading to citizenship. This would come attached with language requirements and no criminal activity.
3. Reward employers who use the guest worker programs as opposed to hiring illegally.
A change to the Constitution is required to prevent children born in the US of illegal aliens from gaining US citizenship as right by birth. It would constitue a travesty to separate a young child from their parents as we deport the illegal parents back to their country of origin - the child must go back with their parent. We can not allow the child of illegal aliens the right to US Citizenship and then backdoor us with that citizenship to allow the parents to remain. Then it cascades to extended family etc
Turn them into whom? The authorities already know they are here, and as it stands, as long as they aren't breaking the law with criminal activity, no one is going to do a thing about it, period. We don't have vans loading up illegals and hauling them out of the country here in Southern NJ. Even when we had to call the police when my son's work van was broken into last year right in the parking lot, the police said they know where we live is a hotbed for illegals as well as a lot of illegal activity, drug trafficking, vehicle theft is high here and even they have their hands tied and can't do anything, unless of course someone is breaking the law AND are caught. These people are sneaky and they know how to get around everything. You might think its simple to just "call the authorities and turn them in" but that does nothing- no one here cares. There are dozens of agencies if not more that are willing to stick up for and help out illegals here, with free legal representation and a host of other things to let them live here.

Most of the hardcore supporters for these amnesty programs will come on and post there little open borders hug an illegal rhetoric and then run away from all the questions posed to them. Not one of them when asked could answer the hard questions like
Why should the parents who brought their kids with them benefit from their illegal act and their illegal status?
Why should the tax payer be on the hook to pay for the loans that would be taken out by these illegals for their continued education with no recourse to be taken against them if they defaulted on the loans?
Why would the Secretary of Homeland Security be given the power to waiver any of the requirements in the Act?
Why would three time convicted criminals be allowed to enter into the program?
What recourse did the Bill have for those that did not complete college within the ten years allotted?

If I was so adamant about supporting something I would have at least picked a Bill that I could support or request that my Reps in Congress made amendments to fix those problems. Instead Reid, Pelosi and company didn't want any amendments and wanted to force this down the tax payers throats.
Around July we will see what happens to Arizona's illegal alien employment law. If it is upheld by a majority or if there is a 4-4 tie which also upholds the law the Obama administration and scumbags like Gutierrez from IL., Grilavia from AZ. and countless ones from CA. will find their hopes shot to hell when most of the rest of the states enact their own illegal immigration laws.

The Snopes page you referred readers is, in part, based on 15-year-old information and was published almost five years ago. The majority of the illegal aliens here now probably arrived within the last 15 years. Remember, a huge number of previous ones were given amnesty by Reagan in the mid-late 80s.

Second, most of us are not against immigrants. Yes, some are bigoted asses, but the majority of us only want people to come here to live and work legally, pay taxes and not be a drain on the system.
Third, the majority of illegal immigrants do NOT pay taxes or social security. If they ARE paying social security, it is because they a have fraudulently obtained a social security number. They do not have, what is know in the legal system as "clean hands". Therefore, they are not entitled to the money.
As to your "tricky treaty" -- good luck with that concept. The Native Americans aren't getting Manhattan Island back -- Mexico isn't getting California. Not really. Last time I checked, and unless it changed overnight, immigrants in the service are legal. They have an SSN and pay taxes. If you do not want to enlist, there are other legal channels. Immigration is not the problem, ILLEGAL immigration is.

They use infrastructure which is not paid for and take a disproportionate amount of welfare and medical costs which are passed onto Americans.
Our nation has always welcomed new citizens, and there has always been a process by which a person applies for and qualifies for citizenship. Just being born here is not sufficient.

Not only must the child be born in the United States, but he or she must also be subject to the jurisdiction thereof. If the parents of the child are not under the jurisdiction of the United States (illegally in country), then how can the unborn child be under the jurisdiction of the Constitution? The unborn child is under the same jurisdiction as the parents which would be the country they hail from, not the host country.
If the parents are here legally by way of visa or any other "legal" permission and have a child while legally in this country, then yes the child could be deemed a legal citizen of the United States.
Either way, I can see no logical reason why our government feels it is responsible for supporting that child or it's parents just because it is born here. Our government didn't feel the need to support my children, why is it they feel the need to support all the illegals?

This is where the impact of Republican control of the House of Representatives is revealed.
Since legislation is supposed to originate in the House of Representatives, then go to the Senate, and finally to the President for signing (or veto), the Republicans, with a simple majority, will pass lots of good sounding legislation, like tougher immigration laws, which the Democrats in the Senate will try to block, or Obama may have to veto. This will be a politically precarious time for the Democrats in the Senate where they have 23 seats to defend in 2012 vs only 11 Senate seats for the Republicans (Democrats recently lost 37% of their Senate seats up for grabs, the Republicans lost none). Obama will also have to defend any veto of popular legislation prior to his re-election bid.
Requiring employers to E-Verify work eligibility for their employees (over 99% accurate) would be a good start, and without jobs, illegal immjigrats will self-deport themselves. At a time when over 15 million Americans are out of work and 12 million illegal immigrants are possibly taking jobs away from Americans, this is just common sense.

Miss American Latina - with all due respect I'd like to tell you a story. I am half Cherokee and the other side arrived in 1714 to settle farmland in WV. So my family has been here for a long time and have been very poor at times. Every generation of males in my family has served in the armed forces in every major war we have had including the American Revolution. We have earned a voice as tried and true Americans. So please do not give me any info on how I am also descended from immigrants. My Native American roots go back 1000s of years.
What I'd like to share with you is my first home I bought. I just worked my way through school, got a great job, and was engaged. Bought a house in a nice Northern VA/DC suburb. Understanding I was thrilled and for five years not a problem. Over those years a number of illegal immigrants started buying up homes (7-8 people responsible for the mortgage) and nearly 20 + people living in a tiny house. After the fourth year MS-13 gang moved in. Yes, the real gang. Within that year we had 7 drive by shootings, arson, drug deals galore. I could no longer leave my house without being armed with mace and couldn't walk my dogs anymore or enjoy the park. The worst was the dog fights. So many awful nights of hearing that. Also, the shooting of the guns off in the middle of the night. I couldn't dialogue with these "neighbors" because no one....I MEAN NO ONE....spoke English. It was awful. In the end we were forced to flee. I sold the home to 12 people who didn't speak English and moved away.
So in the end I want to point out my problems with illegals. They are criminals in so many ways. I don't hate immigrants, but want them to WANT to be American. Assimilate. Also, please stop gaining the system in terms of housing, stealing IDs, welfare, child care (one family hate 15 children). Also, before you say why didn't you call the police...well as previous poster so pointedly said.....the police hands are tied. I got help once from Animal Control on the fights, but they just went out and bought another dog.
Please if you don't feel we are talking appropriately about hispanics/latinos- whatever makes you feel comfortable- realize so many people here have suffered if not more than the ones crossing the desert. What a sad story. The liberals want to talk about the illegals "just looking for a better life", but they want to ignore all of the crime and violence that comes with them.
If we want to be realistic, there are about 6 BILLION people in the world that would love to come here - legally or illegally. Unfortunately, it's the ones from the South that are able to easily make the trip. Also, it's not the "best and brightest" that are streaming across our borders - it's the poor and uneducated that come here, have kids, and then milk the welfare system.

PS - There has never been a real test of the concept of 'citizenship by birth' for children of illegal immigrants, and we need this issue addressed by the Supreme Court. All of the existing case law has dealt with children born to LEGAL immigrants - look up the case law for yourself.

Our total GDP for 2009 was $14.3 trillion and Consumer spending equalled approx. $10.1 trillion. So what you are saying is that 3% of the total population of the United States of America generated approx 1/6 of the total spending in the U.S and 1/8th of the total GDP???? In the USA Today article the author said that $9 Billion dollars was paid into Social Security because of 9 million mismatched w-2s. They pointed out that mismatched did not mean illegal but lets assume they all were. Since social security tax is 6.2% and employers have to match dollar for dollar then 9 million mismatched w-2s resulted in a total of $500 per filer paid into Social Security. At that rate all 9 million filers averaged a yearly income of approx $8,000.
Please tell the audience how 9,000,000 people making $8,000 in income would cause $1.8 trillion in spending to disappear. Keep in mind these are your posts so you are guaranteeing their accuracy right????

Many Americans already do work in the fields, and many (and I do mean many) Americans clean hotel rooms. They also clean hospital rooms, surgery rooms, nursing home rooms, dorm rooms, office rooms, public restrooms, stadium bathrooms, restaurants, stables, mall bathrooms, and I could go on and on but I think you get my point. If not then it's not worth wasting my time explaining it to you anyway.
I really don't know what country you're in that you honestly believe that "all" cleaning jobs, and "all" agricultural jobs are held by non-Americans, but all you're doing is making yourself look ignorant (seriously).
While most Americans would rather not stomp around in muddy fields hoeing cotton, they would do so if that's what it took to support their families.
Where the problem lies is the government rewarding bad behavior. By that, I mean stop rewarding those who choose to live off of unemployment when they could be out taking some of those agricultural and housekeeping jobs.

He was quoting Cavalier's post of how it would be a mess if Americans were working the fields and cleaning toilets and you can see that he said that yea what a mess it would be if the illegals were gone and unemployment was in the negative numbers.
I agree with both of you. Americans will do any job as long as the pay is right. If all the illegals were gone tomorrow most employers would come up with the extra money to pay for the additional labor costs.
Will some businesses close because of it? Yes. However if there is a need for the services these companies provide then others will take their places. Most of the jobs that won't be replaced are those catering to the illegals such as their community grocery stores. No great loss!
The bottom line is if they all left tomorrow it would not negatively impact our economy and in fact would put more legal residents back to work and get the illegals off the tax payers backs.

OK the FACT is that any undocumented worker (read illegal alien) that is paying social security taxes has obtained a social security number FRAUDULENTLY. That means they do not have, in legal parlance, "clean hands". So even if they "pay in", they are not entitled to get any money.
But that makes up only a very small percentage of illegal aliens. In the meantime, just as an example, our school systems are educating their children. I doubt they are paying the property taxes and state income taxes that support the schools.
Bottom line, if you want to come to this country, work and be a productive, tax paying citizen -- you are welcome. IF you do it legally.

All they needed was paper stating who they were such as a birth certificate and papers stating where they were coming from. There were no citizenship tests or anything else like there is today. Farms can get legal guest worker labor through the H-2A guest worker program. There are plenty of people from around the world that would be happy to work in the United States for a year or two in order to earn money to provide better lives for their families.
The H-2A program benefits farmers in that they know in advance that they will have the labor force that they need to harvest and grow their crops. (For example, a farmer in Washington said that he used to have to hope that enough illegal immigrant labor would show up to harvest his apple crops...but now he contracts in advance for 150 Jamaican legal guest-workers to work on his farm).
The H-2A program benefits workers from other countries because they are allowed to travel legally and safely to work in the United States. They are also guaranteed fair working conditions, wages of $10 to $12 per hour, and the employer must provide housing and pay for transportation to and from the guest worker’s home country.
As the federal government cracks down on more farms that are employing huge numbers of illegal immigrants, more farm owners are choosing to use the legal H-2A guest worker programs. It is a good solution to our labor needs and part of the solution for our immigration problems.

Lets look at that tired old fairy tale about lettuce costing $5 per head. In Calif. the Agriculture Dept at U.C. Davis did an extensive report on the costs for growing and taking to market various fruits and vegetables. The report wasn't designed for immigration however since it was done in an unbiased and in depth manner it is perfect for showing how ignorant most people are when it comes to what a farm operator would have to pay in labor costs to make a head of lettuce $5.
Per U.C. Davis an average farm in an average year growing lettuce will have a crop of approx 800 cartons of lettuce per acre with each carton holding 24 heads of lettuce. In 2008 and 2009 the going piece rate for picking, packing, palletizing and wrapping a carton of lettuce was $3.15 per carton or just under $0.13 per head of lettuce. The study showed the farmer with this average crop would make approx $600 dollars per acre if he sold the lettuce at $.50 per head after all his costs were taken out.
Total cost to the middleman for transportation, loading and unloading etc. and the final store markup costs the consumer approx $1.10 per head. To make this a $5 head of lettuce a picker would have to charge $4.03 per head of lettuce picked. Not carton but head.
Even if the laborer only picked 2 cartons an hour. That is one head of lettuce per minute for 48 minutes and then took a break for 12 minutes per hour he or she would be making $193.44 an hour. For that kind of money there would never be a shortage of farm workers. Everybody would want to be a vegetable picker. So that ridiculous argument is just that, ridiculous.
Same with any other type of goods. Labor is usually no more than 1/6th the total cost of any given item.
Please come up with something better than the costs of goods will go up and that everything will cost a fortune if we run off the cock roaches.

And, there's enough BLAME to go to both the Democrats and Republicans in Congress who have turned a blind eye to this escalating problem. If Congress had enforced our "existing federal laws," this would have never become such a major problem. Federal laws prohibit employers hiring employees who are not "legally" documented to work in the United States, and vice-versa, employees without the proper legal authorization are not allowed to work in the United States.
Congress can't figure out what to do with the problem THEY created, and now Congress realizes that Americans (Democrats and Republicans alike) are royally ticked off that this problem has escalated literally -- out of control! It's a true mess!

First, the economy was singing right along until Democrats took control of the House. Do you know who controls the purse strings? The House does, not the president.
Second, the economic downturn was started by the mortgage industry meltdown. This meltdown was caused by Democratic policy that forced banks to give mortgages to people who could never make the payments. It then hit the insurers of those mortgages as they were forced to pay out the claims.

As a democrat I guess this brings up a good point, how is it that the southern states appear to be more economically viable than the rust belt? The number of illegals in this country is more than the population of Florida. You want to know what's going on? I don't think many will disagree with you that the immigration system needs to be fixed, however just ignoring the laws isn't fixing anything. We need to start with enforcement to get things under control and then revise the immigration laws & quotas.

The DREAM act is a bit of a quagmire as far as I'm concerned. The children it speaks to covering are stuck in a donut hole through no doing of their own- they didn't ask to be brought here and weren't given the option to stay behind, often they've known no other home than the US and don't have someplace to go back to. Ultimately I have no objection to extending citizenship to those who have grown up here, kept a clean record and chosen to serve our country through military service. If you're willing to put your butt on the line so that myself and others can sleep more safely at night, you've earned your path to citizenship. I disagree, though, when the DREAM act gets to the part about granting citizenship to those completing SOME college education. Somehow that just doesn't sit well, especially with so many illegals getting tuition breaks that are not available to legal citizens. If the DREAM act were to, say, require graduation and set tuition levels at the non-resident level, exclude the student from government backed student loans or require repayment in full of the government backed loan in order to obtain legal citizenship then I might reconsider, but as it stands now, I'd like to personally thank everyone who voted it down. Stop making it attractive to cross the border illegally, start enforcing the laws we have on the books and see who's still here in 5 years, then we can talk about the next step

I don't think that the babies of the illegals should get anything from us. Most of them know that they are illegal themselves but don't do anything about it so why should we give them anything? If they want citizenship for themselves, let them put themselves in harms way like our brave soldiers are doing, for the illegals freedom to protest in our streets, then give them citizenship when their time is over. But also what should be in their paperwork is a statement that they will not bring over or try to make their illegal relatives legal. The argument always seems to fall into the "we're too proud" category. This argument fails miserabley.
I cleaned toilets to put myself through college. The point is, I wasn't too proud to do it, just had a higher goal in mind. When I graduated, I got the job I set my sights on, and quit cleaning toilets as a means of income. I earned the right to allocate my resources, if I choose, and hire someone (legally) to do certain things for me. Of coarse, I'm too cheap to do so.
On the other hand, if someone elses ambitions reach no higher than cleaning toilets all of their life, they also have my blessing. Some people find an opportunity. I personally know of people who started the same way and now have a business cleaning toilets that employ many people. Waste Management started with one guy and one garbage truck. That man was a white, natural born citizen guy who wasn't too proud to handle garbage.
The toilet cleaning argument loses crdibility, too, when you take into account the many non-immigrants who regularly collect our garbage, operate our sewage systems, or the many plumbers who are paid to stick their hands in your toilet. THEY ARE NOT TOO PROUD, they are just determined to be paid commensurate with their skills.
So I'm saying, if you have legitimate arguments in favor of illegal immigration, I am anxious to hear them. Just haven't accepted the logic of any that have been regurgitated so far.

I love this argument. It's a pathetic attempt to ignore the truth. This is a market economy. Both in goods and services.
The work you do for an employer is a service he pays you for. If he can get the service he needs for $6 an hour he'll take it. If he can't get it for $6 an hour he'll pay more until it reaches an amount people are willing to take.
If you get Jose from Mexico who will provide the employer his services for $6 an hour it stops there. And that is what happens with illegal aliens. They take far less than a U.S. citizen needs and so the wages are depressed. If the illegal aliens were not here the jobs for mowing and toilet cleaning would pay more and low income U.S. citizens would take them and more and get paid a decent wage.

There are "two" conditions clearly stated and the word "and" clearly delineates them and makes them "inclusive", not optional. The word "or" gives the option between two choices for the "first" pre-requisite. The word "and" clearly indicates a second requirement.
Both pre-requisites are met if the parents are in the U. S. legally and have a child while they are here. At that point I believe the parents have the option of declaring their child a U.S. Citizen.
Why, if I do something illegal I get arrested and go to jail, someone else does something illegal and they get their and their childrens education paid for? Every politician that does not get behind dealing with illegal aliens or the ones that voted for the nightmare act during this lame duck already should be recalled. This is a travesty inflicted on the American people by the ruling elite class to keep the labor force in it's place and have a ready made voter block.

I disagree with a mandatory secong language. English is the language spoken when our country was founded, English should stay our official language. Try going to a foriegn country and setting up household their and see how far you get trying to tell them that they must conform to what your needs are.
You're absolutely right. I have been turned down for jobs I was qualified for because I wasn't biligual. Since when does getting a job in this country depend on whether or not you can speak spanish? I thought it was the other way around--if you go to a different country to live, you are supposed to learn the language of that country. But not here! Here we are expected to learn immigrants languages (whether they are legal or illegal). I wonder how many jobs don't go to Americans who aren't biligual? Anyone have any statistics?

allot of places around here that were once nice little all American small towns that have been taken over ( and trashed) and now you don't need to be bilingaul to find work, just speak Spanish.
I have a friend who lived in Miami, she went to the post office (a part of the federal government) in a predominately Cuban part of town. In the post office, they refused to speak to her in English. If an American refused to speak (or get a translator) for a Latino, it would be all over the news. I wonder how many times Spanish speakers refuse to accomodate English speakers? It's outrageous!
Oh yes it does, it speaks the language of $hit! That's all that comes out of the governments mouth.
It just shows the lopsided huge number of Spanish speakers that have come over in the last decade and have not assimilated compared to history's vast number of immigrants from all other countries world-wide have assimilated and do speak English.

Take away any and all chance of welfare, food stamps, medical, housing and any other entitlement programs and they will go home on their own. Why wouldn't you want to go to a country that gives illegals preference over its own citizens? Cut the fat-they'll go back!
Exactly right. The way to solve the illegal alien problem needs to be taken in three steps. First, CONTROL THE BORDER! Second, end ALL entitlements for ilegal aliens and their familys( this also includes printing applications for such aid to be printed in english only). Third, enforce the laws againsts knowingly employing illegal aliens and giving the enforcment teeth. (If you shut down the companies that flaunt our laws fewer will take the risk). With no free crap and no employment there will be no need to deport anyone, there will be a line of ilegal aliens streaming south that might be visible from space. This will also lower the unemplyment rate a few percentage points. All it takes is some politicians will the nerve to do it and an electorate backing them up at the polls.
And as an aside, if any MEXICAN poiticians have a problem with it , tell them to mind their own business. If Mexico wasn't such a corrupt, crime infested dungheap perhaps fewer people would want to leave.
You forgot, Make E-Verify mandatory for all employers and heavily fine employers that hire them. Get rid of the job magnet as well as the social services, and enforce the birthright citizenship clause as it was intended (children of foreigners are not subject legal citizens) they'll self-deport.
Close the border, enforce existing laws on the books at all levels, (not just fed enforcement), and eliminate the ability to name your city a "sanctuary" city.
I believe that illegal immigrants should be sent packing, but I also believe that you shouldn't punish children for the misdeeds of their parents.
I'm ok with saying that someone who has never known anything but the U.S. should be given a chance to be made legal. Send their parents home sure.
I'm also in favor of making English the national language as long as we also require that our schools teach every child a second language. We'd save a fortune every year in government paperwork that doesn't need to translated and paying 10% extra an hour to bi-lingual CSR's for programs like Medicare and Social Security. Being able to communicate with other people is key to understanding them, but to many people come to the U.S. and want it to adopt their ways instead of melting into the cultural pot themselves. P.S. I love Mexican food, I just don't want to learn Spanish. I already speak 3 languages.

If we just don't allow government benefits to illegal immigrants then we wouldn't need to print most of those government documents you mentioned in Spanish.
Illegal Immigrants should be sent back to wherever they come from along with their babies. Citizenship to babies is for immigrants that have legally entered this country. Its really a simple concept. Why does it have to be such a complicated issue?
No one is saying that we shouldn't learn a foreign language but by all means, it shouldn't have to be Spanish, and we must remember, ENGLISH is the language of global commerce as well as the customary language of the U.S. that all prior immigrants did learn when coming here. The Latinos that are not learning English will never succeed in this country speaking it.
I call BS, there is a huge legal population in Florida, California, Texas, and Arizona, families that have been here for generations that do not speak or read english well. There is nothing wrong with supporting a multi-lingual society. When you take someone's language away you take their culture away. This is not the United States of England.
