I just heard the Sheriff speaking on the news and there still was not a lot of info from him but he did go off on the inflammatory and hateful "Crap" (his words) that is flying around out there. He sounds sickened by all this as he should be. Much like every caring human being.

They also reported just now that she is not dead and is currently in surgery. Positive thoughts people!

Cardinals is a classic example of what I was referring to when the ,evidently Republican, posters were upset about negative comments made about Wheeler's death a few days ago. This country has become so polarized across party lines that there is no respect for the other persons opinion anymore. All form of working together to find a solution has vanished with the "my way or the highway" syndrome.

I guess in America we don't have the "Innocent until proven guilty" Law any longer. BTW, not ONE report yet has pointed any blame to the Political "Targeting" of an opponent, one that would likely be replaced by the Right.
BOTH Parties use little "Target" sybols for the Districts that are most important to them, and in no way are they "asassins references" for hired guns.

My first thought was it was related to the drug war, but since her office was trashed after the health care vote, I'm thinking right wing extremist. The assailant in custody is a caucasian male in his early 20s.

Based upon these facts, any rational adult and the police will be looking into the conservative, right-wing extremists as the source for these attacks. The sniff of desperation to own any responsibility from the conservatives on Newsvine is palpable. Within 24 hours, we will assuredly have a definative conclusion.

If I were to place a bet at this moment, I would say that the odds are is that this young man will squarely be a right-wing conservative, who believed with impunity in his "right" to alter the votes of his fellow Arizonians.

Did you ever hear of "logical consequences"? Rational Americans have been trying to tell Palin and the FOX News crowd that this was inevitable if they didn't quit promoting "2nd Amendment remedies" and targeting their political opponents as if they were Satan. Blood on their hands, and they can't say they weren't warned.

It just reported that Rep Giffords is in surgery. There has also been a child injured and in critical condition according to Hospital where they are.

Rep Giffords is 40 yrs old, married to Mark Kelly, a decorated serviceman and astronaut. He has released statement she is still alive.

Boehner has also released a statement with the normal type wording. My problem with his statement is where the f*ck was he when Palin was putting out crosshair maps last year setting out the names of the various senators and reps on it. I was already aware of his age and that he had been tackled by a bystander and detained. We still don't know his motives yet is all I am saying.

I am inclined to believe that his motives were political due to the amount of threats of violence against Mrs. Giffords and the heated debates taking place in Arizona. However, I am still open to the idea that it could also be just a random act of violence carried out simply by the opportunity to do so by some idiot that just wanted attention. That does also happen. We don't know yet.

I do think Palin and Angle have been crossing lines with their rhetoric regardless of how this turns out.

Is it ok to put to death a Thug in Detroit that kills someone for no reason either? Or just because this was a Congresswomen? Or because it was a D Congresswomen? Or do you believe in the death penalty?

Let me get this straight. Without any information about this particular crime, it has been concluded by some that this guy was definitely a Tea Partier and was incited directly by Sarah Palin on the evidence that someone else supposedly held an anti-Gifford event somewhere and another someone sent Gifford death threats after she supported the HCR, also that another someone or someones vandalized her office. The death threats and vandalism were horrible, and I hope they were punished severely; but I doubt they would stand up in a court of law as evidence about this shooter's motives.

Why can't we stand together to help find out why this happened and to help prevent things like this from happening to any politician-or citizen? AZ has been a dangerous place for a while-a relative who lives there told me that they have warnings against entering their own national parks and that certain areas have high kidnapping risks. Whether this shooter is indeed a Tea Partier or any other political persuasion, I hope he is punished severely. I definitely agree that any politician who puts targets on a map and uses inflammatory language against other politicians is being VERY irresponsible, as there could always be nuts who would would take that rhetoric seriously and actually get a gun to carry it out. I personally did not watch Fox News or Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, or the others to see how inflammatory their remarks actually were. I actually got most of my news from MSNBC, CNN, or a local paper. Following news conference online from hospital. Name of the shooter Jared Lauffner from Tucson, age 22. Five patients in the operating undergoing surgery. Ten people wounded - five critical, five stable, one dead. Congresswomen is one of the critical; neurosurgeons have finished operating. The person dead was a child. This counts ONLY the people received at the hospital. If others were killed at the scene, that's not in this count.

Dr just reported that he was optimistic about her recovery, reported 1 child dead at his hospital and 5 in critical condition and five more in operating room. Giffords alive and in recovery shot through and through one time in the head.

I agree, we need more info. Too many people are putting forward opinions as though they were facts. I do not agree with many of Ms. Gifford's political positions but she has proven to be one of the few who really listen to her constituents. Judge Roll in 2009, faced death threats after presiding over a $32 million civil-rights lawsuit. The lawsuit was filed by illegal immigrants against an Arizona rancher. After Judge Roll ruled the case would be certified, threats came from talk-radio shows which fueled controversy and spurred audiences into making threats against the judge^[2].

The threats materialized after one show, Judge Roll's name logged more than 200 phone calls as some callers threatened the judge and his family^[2].

This resulted in the judge and his wife were under a protection detail for one month as Judge Roll was given twenty four hours a day, seven days a week security by the US Marshals Service. An US Attorney's investigation ruled that four men were identified as threat makers, but no charges were filed^[2].

In a July 9, 2009 interview with the Arizona Republic, Judge Roll described the time under high security as "unnerving and invasive. . . . By its nature it has to be," Roll said. Roll also said, "It (the security) was handled very professionally by the Marshals Service."^[2]

At the end of the month, Roll said four key men had been identified as threat makers^[2].

It seems everyone has already speculated. A child was also killed apparently. NPR is reporting that it is a teen or a young male no older than 20 who was the shooter/it is only one shooter but multiple deaths.

ralvm12 - It was the Democrats that made this difficult to tackle. The politicized the whole issue and stirred up the immigrants so that they could get their votes. That's why Bush had to tread a fine line - he was trying to go down the middle of the road vs. Obama who take a sharp left. Politics aside - now it's so highly charged it's going to be difficult for anyone to do something constructive with the illegal immigration problem we face.
