I'm a democrat. In the spirit of Obama's speech and what I have always believed about political discourse I will take it that Palin is speaking in good faith. However, I do not believe that she has appropriate good taste in political rhetoric ,and, as such (amid other reasons) is not fit to hold political office.

See, I can do that without calling anyone names, or accusing anyone of speaking in bad faith. I challenge everyone in this post to do the same. Yes, it is very, very, very hard to do this.

What a dumb poll to take. Obama kept his mouth shut, sent out his political hacks and then, a week later makes a "nice" speech. Palin was called out for responding to the lies, assaults and over all bad tastes of the left. The poll should have been, do you prefer apples or oranges.

Why does this woman continue to get national attention? She has made an utter fool of herself since day one. All the way back to her vice-presidential bid she was unable to name a Supreme Court case besides Roe vs Wade, and she couldn't name one magazine or newspaper that she read. In another interview, she seemed to have no clue who Hamas is and started rambling rather incoherently about Iran. She made some weird claim about International Relations experience because the president of Russia would fly over Alaskin airspace or something similarly bizarre. How can anyone say Palin did a great job? Her response and comments were all over the board, she was cracking under pressure, this is not someone who should be in charge of our country!

Palin is an interesting phenomenon. I am not sure if it is because she is an (apparently) physically attractive person that the media likes to print her picture, or if it has more to do with the fact that people who are "liberal" (I don't mean actually "liberal" by that, but "knee-jerk liberal") think that all conservatives are moronic, and see her as a typical spokesperson.

We can find many such individuals--the intellectually limited Hasselbeck, the self-aggrandizing O'Reilly, the ethnocentric Palin, the unbalanced Bachmann--whom the media gloms onto.

What I find very sad is that these people have come to be spokespersons for the "conservatives." These people are no more capable of clearly articulating a conservative position than they are capable of explaining Einstein's theory of relativity.

I wonder if the Republican party realizes--and I think that they are coming to realize this--that such people are doing more to alienate voters entirely than they are to bringing them into the Republican fold (or to turn them into Democrats). The last time this happened--and disaffected people started up the "American" party (also known as the "Know Nothing" party), an interesting thing happened. The Whig party disappeared and the new Republican party came into being.

I think that, perhaps, people ought to look into the "Know Nothing" party--it was opposed to the immigration of Irish and German Catholics into the US and wanted to curb both immigration and naturalization (they promised to appoint only native born Americans to office), it was only open to Protestant males of British lineage who were over 21, it was largely middle class, it was prone to violence to achieve its ends . . . wow, does this sound like Palin's "Tea Party" or what?

Those who fail to learn from history (and Palin would be one) are doomed to repeat it. The time is ripe for a new party to emerge--and the party most likely to bite the dust is the Republican party. Allowing someone like Palin (and the others) to rise to power was not a very good idea for them.

I am sure that we all know people like Palin--who don't understand the Constitution, who don't understand what a democratic republic based on religious freedom is, who don't understand even the basics of logic or the English language. The world must be a really frightening place for people like that--and it kind of explains why they get so angry about "change." These are people for whom "different is bad" because all they can wrap their brains around is what was done in the past (or, what they fantasize was done in the past). They only understand slogans--which is why, like Palin, they tend to cobble half-understood sloganizing language together in a kind of gibberish way.

I think that SNL is right--I would be offended if I actually thought she understood what she was doing. But, I do think that people ought to look up the Know Nothing party to see what happened--we really can learn from history. Well, if we are a little more advanced than Palin.

To Palin: don't retreat, keep reloading your rhetoric. You will soon find no exit.

I am sorry but after listening to both Christians speeches I believe Obama's was much more Christ like than Palin's was. Obama spoke about offering words of healing rather than wounding. He also stated that power, wealth and fame was not as important than love. That was more Christ like than what Palin had to offer during this crisis.

Being at the top is not all that it is cracked up to be. A good leader is selfless and others come first. A good leader has to be strong in the face of adversity. Palin did not display strong common sense leadership. If she would have waited she would had been exalted of the accusations that had been made personally against her. She didn't, which ended up making her look weak and foolish. A good leader needs to stay focused and positive, not just for Christians, but for ALL of humanity!

A lot of the rhetoric I see written here seems like people are trying to have an intellectual discussion with a stone and actually expect an answer.

I for one as an American am growing tired on all this talk about democrats / Republicans / Liberals / Conservatives. We need to unite as Americans and not listen to these figure pointing, my sh.. doesn't stink politicians and figure out what is wrong with America. We have global responsibilities and we have national responsibilities. Sarah is not our future or the future of our children. No answers here but every time our national cheerleader opens her mouth the less she shows that she has any hope of being part of the solution. We need a new breed in Washington, one that can balance our global and national responsibilities, balance the budget and bring the pride back to the USA. Obviously this can't be a knee jerk reaction but a permanent fix, a change of Washington culture for the people and by the people. Sarah was a college party girl in Hawaii who hopscotched to different colleges before graduating in journalism. Her first job was as a sports caster. She took that job not because she has a passion for sports, but she has a passion for being in front of a camera. She ran for mayor not because of a passion for politics but a passion for fame. It's not a better nation that she seeks, it's the camera! She simply loves being in front of a camera and she found a way to keep doing it forever. Kudos Sarah.

There is a difference between political debate as evinced by the Lincoln/Douglasdebates or even Kennedy. Nixon or Bush/Gore and the style of demagoguery she espouses. Only the most militant blamed Sarah for the murders and carnage. What they did say is that Sarah's rifle crosshairs may have contributed. And why did they say that?

Simply because the crosshairs were addressed by Gabrielle in a strong message about how these types of actions can have consequences. And then she was shot.

Had Gabrielle not been shot after being targeted Sarah would just have been seen as having bad taste. Now she is seen as one of many who have gone too far and because so many died it is a wise thing to think about consequences Gabrielle warned us all about.

In this case the targeted person was shot and as long as she is struggling we all struggle with her to seek answers. The person known as Sarah will never understand that. She is too busy thinking it is all about her being wronged to understand the words that once came from someone who may not ever speak again. Our hearts are with the victim not the self deluded martyre.

We better find answers and draw lines and it does not matter whether this killer never saw the crosshairs on Sarahs brainstorm idea. Blood Libel means false acccusations against someone. In this case the Jews throughout history. In Mrs. Palin's case the liberal media is falsely accusing her of giving cause to the shooter in Tucson. What they are saying is a Blood Libel against her. The only reason she is being trashed is because the thugs on the left view her as a threat. Notice that none of the comments ever discuss "issues" when talking about Palin. The campaign against her is a concerted effort to get those people who don't pay much attention to politics to go along with the claim that she is too polarizing. By doing that, they seek to put her out of the running without ever addressing the issues. In fact, the left does this with any candidate that they are afraid of. Paul makes a good point; if Palin were not considered a threat to their parties or beliefs, they would ignore her. The fact that they seek to discredit every word and action shows that she is a threat to them.

What I find disturbing is how the left says the rhetoric (2nd amendment solutions, reload, cross-hairs) is contributing to the climate where someone could bring a gun to a political rally. In point of fact, the economic down turn first became evident in 2007, but before January 2007, the real estate and financial bubbles which caused it were starting to crack. If you paid a slight bit more attention to current events, you'd remember that real estate prices peaked early in 2006, and began their decline shortly thereafter. At this time large banks and investment houses were sitting on huge piles of derivative mortgage securities, tied to overpriced properties. By 2007, the house of cards was beginning to crumble, and there was little Congress could do to prevent it. You, association of the ascendancy of the Democrats in January of that year and the start of the recession is about as logical as the rooster believing he brings the sunrise. This is not economically supportable.

As to the Constitution and the "General Welfare" clause you reference is generally equated to Sect. 8, which in its opening paragraph states:

The Congress shall have power To lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts and excises, to pay the debts and provide fore the common defence and general welfare of the United States; but all duties imposts and excises shall be uniform throughout the United States.

It goes on to list other powers, such as the right to declare war and to regulate interstate commerce. No where is there any such prohibition against "forcing people to buy a product".
And, in 1792, when the ink of this document was yet fresh, Congress passed the 2nd Militia Act, which required, among other things:

The second Act, passed May 8, 1792, provided for the organization of the state militias. It conscripted every "free able-bodied white male citizen" between the ages of 18 and 45 into a local militia company overseen by the state. Militia members were to arm themselves with a musket, bayonet and belt, two spare flints, a cartridge box with 24 bullets, and a knapsack. Men owning rifles were required to provide a powder horn, 1/4 pound of gun powder, 20 rifle balls, a shooting pouch, and a knapsack.

I'll point out that the provision that all able-bodied men between certain ages were required to "arm themselves with a musket, bayonet and belt with two spare flints, a cartridge box and 24 bullets and a knapsack" is a clear and explicit case of "forcing people to buy a product". So, I'd say that your argument, which has little traction in the legal world, is also unsupportable.

I'm not in favour of the Health Care Reform Act. But there is very little reason to believe it will be found unconstitutional. Like I said, just because a law is nonsensical, it does not follow that it is prohibited by the Constitution.

Palin and a few less notable Tea Partiers were very foolish with their rhetoric during the last campaign cycle, but they were not what I would call accessories to the Tuscon murders. Figuratively speaking, we all have the blood from this on our hands. It is possible that all of the vile rhetoric influenced Loughner to some degree. However, he conceived his diabolical plot on his own, he planned it out on his own, and he carried it out in his own. He is the only person responsible for these murders.

No reasonable person is saying Palin should be denied her 1st Amendment right to speak. She simply needs to be more mindful of how she conveys her message from now on, to be more careful with how she crafts her rhetoric. The same goes for all of us. There are folks on both sides of the aisle who need to mind their manners in a more adult fashion instead of constantly acting like completely undisciplined children every single time they don't get things 100% the way they want it.

These cheap tactics of vilifying opponents, and spreading baseless paranoia about the intentions and loyalties of those opponents would get you a big fat F in any high school debate class. So why do so many "professional" politicians and pundits think that it is acceptable behavior to use such tactics? Our politicians all need to focus on debating the issues plaguing our nation based solely on the merits of those issues, to focus on working together in order to hammer out solutions to those problems. The endless political smear campaigns against one anothers' character is not a solution to anything. It needs to come to an end.

Unfortunately, Palin is too laughable to be ignored. Seemingly, the whole country is enjoying some kind of morbid pleasure in listening to her. My suggestion is simply that we should stop listening and stop responding. She thrives on public response to her ignorance. So, if we stop listening and responding she'll have nothing to thrive on and will quickly disappear babbling incoherently in a darkness of her own creation rather than in the light of puplic discourse.

Palin has the right to speak in a civil manner. The rest of us have the right to ignore her if we so choose.

She remains in the national spotlight because the news media hangs on her every word, because she is their unrivaled obsession. That is a big reason why her statements here in this article about being told to shut up are laughable. The news media outlets are all determined to ensure that her First Amendment right is protected and nurtured, more so than just about everyone else in this country.

Some of us warned that this could hit some people the wrong way as soon as she did this, and Angle suggested "Second Amendment" solutions to an election result that didn't favor her, and other instances of the Republicans using gun-related imagery and words as major points of their campaigns last year. Those of us who were concerned were dismissed by the Republicans, including Palin, and were told the concerns about violence resulting from their rhetoric was complete BS.

Then the shootings occurred.

Then, after that some of us said, "We warned you this could happen. Want to tone it down yet to minimize the chance of another lone crazy doing the same in a state you put crosshairs on?"

Only after that ( and after removing the crosshairs map and quotes with gun terminology from her PAC's online records of her statements, odd move if it "couldn't possibly" have had anything to do with the AZ shooting ) did Palin mention the term "blood libel," which some see as offensive because it usually has been used to refer to lies intended to promote anti-semitic violence, while Palin, a "good. Christian" woman sat comfortably in Wasilla and a Jewish congresswoman who defeated Palin's favorite in one of the states with crosshairs in Palin's map lay fighting for her life from a gunshot wound to the head.

Chronologically, trying to tie Palin's "blood libel" poutrage/persecution complex for a shooting that happened before wouldn't make sense, and I've yet to see anyone try to do so...

...unless you're doing just that in an odd effort at deflection and changing the record, but I'll give you benefit of the doubt and say you probably just misunderstood what was being pointed out as tasteless comment by Palin and what her contribution to violent political rhetoric was before the shooting.

I am not a member of the TEA Party but do agree with much of what they stand for, I am not a Republican but am a registered democrat since 1972 and see that the democratic party of today isn't the democratic party I registered for in 1972.

As far as Sara Palin goes I can take her or leave her and don't have any great admiration or hate for her and I don't care if you disagree with her or not, but the hypocrisy that you and many others show when making statements that accuse her and the TEA Party of hate mongering is just unbelievable when you use the same tactics against her.

Big difference Jon. People commenting on this thread aren't having their words brodcast to the entire country 24/7. What ugliness the neighbors may spew at each other is something very different that what the likes of Sarah Palin spews on national television. I understand the urge to want to hold the person in the store running their mouth to the same standards that SP, or any other personality that has near constant coverage should be held to but it is a very different situation. The difference SHOULD be quite plain. But apparently, it's not to some.

Also, I thought her spokesperson was adamant that the cross-hairs map WASN'T a cross-hairs map? And was it really taken down as soon as the inappropriate gun imagery was pointed out to them? Or not until after the shooting? I don't remember them responding in some conciliatory way when the subject was broached originally, but I don't hang on her every word. (Not to be an alarmist, but I suspect that a person who is an unrepentant serial killer of her own brain cells may be a danger to others as well.)

Let's see the scorecard: Largest victory in the Hosue of Representatives for the Republican Party since 1938. Heck, look at tghe local races and that's even more telling. The number of races won by Republicans for Governor and in state legislative bodies in a census year surely must mean the Tea Party has dried up. Yep. The MSM will sure try to paint the picture that they have no juice anymore. That this was a fluke. Obama was just misunderstood. It's Pelosi's fault.

Whatever the excuses are, the sheer number of conservatives (and tea Party backed) candidates and all the conservatives they'll be hiring for their executive staffs will define what happens in a lot of elections, particularly after redistricting is done by the vast number of Republican controlled state legislations and gubernatorial offices.

Can Obama still win in 2012? Sure. It's happened over the course of the century several times that the President is retained and CONgress goes the other way. A lot of prosperity in America came from gridlocked government, as when things are gridlocked abominations of law such as the 2000+ page "you'll know what's in it after you pass it" health care bill don't get passed. True bipartisanship that benefits more (things are broken enough that few bills will benefit most) Americans and the most egregious pieces of those bills get left behind, rather than catered to. You say "she was unjustly connected with he shooting"; while I can agree that there is likely no direct link between Sarah Palin and the shooter. It was Congress Woman Gifford that made the link to "heated rhetoric" the crosshairs on the map and said you have to expect that your choice of words have consequences. Since she was the primary target, that is close enough link to warrant a little backing down, but no Dear Sarah had to double down in stead.

It probably would have be best if Sarah had said "we have taken down the map because, while I do not believe it has any link to the shooting, I do not want to cause the Gifford family any more distress. But no! Poor Tone Deaf Sarah uses the term Blood Libel in her own defense. A term offensive to many Jewish People because it is the Blood Libel that was used to justify killing the Jews. Oh, and do I need to point out that Congress Woman Giffod is the first Jewish representative from Arizona?

I didn't blame her for the massacre, she can't be held responsible for an insane persons acts. She started out well with her first condolence message. My problem with Palin isn't so much her politics, my sister is a Tea Bagger and that's absolutely her right. We disagree on most political issues, always have. We are both right in our own minds. What makes me want to beat the stuffing out of Palin is her total lack of control, class, and any sort of professional, courageous behavior. She is confusing courage with blind stubbornness, and there is a huge difference. I watched the clip on TV last night, her clip from Hannity's show. Whatever points she may have made to help me understand her views on why she is being "victimized" were totally overshadowed by the fact that she has NO class, NO common sense, and lacks the disposition to lead a troop of Girl Scouts much less a country. I could just see her in a heated meeting with North Korea, Iran, etc., and going for the "ballsy/I don't back down/compromise for anybody" approach. We'd all be speaking Islamic..
