Mr. Shriver was a good man and I will miss him. My condolences to the family and friends of a great liberal.
Shriver may have been a good man with good goals and ideals, but the organization he founded left hundreds, if not thousands of young people, especially young women, at the mercy of vicious thugs in foreign lands and when they were raped and murdered the organization told them it was their own fault, they should have been careful and they'd better not tell anyone about it. How very humanitarian.

One of my hero’s has passed I offer my condolences to the Shriver family, I thought you would have been a great president and always wished this would or could come to be but the game of wheeling and dealing was beneath you and so you created our Peace Corps to your everlasting memory and contribution to our country and humanity. I shed tears today, without remorse or embarrassment, when I think of and when I heard of your passing. First Mr. Sorenson and now you have left us. I will certainly shed further tears and sighs of regret in the days to follow; let them fling their arrows at me. I will miss you and never forget you and maybe one day we will see each other, I do so hope.

Entitled, no, what is happening within the Peace Corps now was not part of the mission of the Corps when it started. Mr Shriver took on the job to help people not harm them. Unfortunately, as was shown on 20/20 just this past Fri (Jan 14) it is happening now. Search out a transcript for it. That said, this was just not the time for Mikey to bring it up.

It is so sad to see the last of the Political Dynasty's is just about over in the US. They wielded power, love, and fun, reaching out to others who needed help and direction.. What a unique family; their offsprings will surely try to emulate them, but it will not be the same.

Barbara Adams Jackson, your argument to Dano went to far. You did bring in your "hate" with the final part of your statement with your Bush comment. Your comment left no doubt as to how you feel. Dano's comment, well not exactly a proper condolence comment did bring up a point that was made not only in the article but in Mr Shriver's autobiography, he was not a womanizer. If you want to call someone on their "hate" and talk about growing up and quitting "hate," don't let yours out.
It looks like "hate" will be this years go to word for anyone that disagrees with someone. This should mean that people will watch how they call others hateful when their own views/comments spew hate. Course here on the Vine that will not happen.

I quite agree. I grew up in an age when such a style of service was important. And did not have to ask what Mr Kennedy meant when he said, "Ask not what your country can do for you......" et cetera, I don't remember the entire speech but I do remember its meaning.

Yes they do, they just arent given enough chances to do anything... Some of the most righteous good people ive ever known were those who lead very simple lives. Sadly people are no longer recognized for whats in their heart.

The passing of Mr Shriver is the end of an era. The era of good deeds and hard work. What we have left is a pathetic self-centered society, with pathetic citizens. I wonder if there will ever be another Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower or another President like John Kennedy. Men who had goals and guts, men who wanted to enrich the lives of the American people. A truly great man has passed today, and that shouldn't be taken lightly or as some joke or some forum to slam his family, it should just be a sad event.
A great man of great vision, the world needs more men like Mr.Shriver.

Sargent Shriver was a man that I always admired. He gave his time to so many and with his wife formed so many organization that helped the poor and those that were aflicted in their lives. Who couldn't admire such a wonderful man

I'm wondering if the caption under the picture at the right showing him walking in the church for Sen. Kennedy's funeral is incorrect. How could he have such a young looking son if he is in his 90's? Could this in fact be a grandson? I'm not familiar with the Kennedys and Schrivers so don't know who is who.
Anothony is his youngest at 45, so that means Sarge was 50 when he was born.

Unlike MOST of his wife's family, both Shriver and Eunice always represented dignity and class; one of the BRIGHTEST stars in the Kennedy family. It seems interesting that the best part of the Kennedy family were the spouses they married?
Jackie and Mr. Shriver brought more class and dignity to the Kennedy legacy than all their bootlegging money could ever buy. It's hard to imagine how he tolerated his "in-laws?"

Sorry to hear this news although aware of Mr Shriver's diagnosis, I am sure he is at peace. As the parent of 2 special needs children and a proud advocate of both military and peaceful service I find myself thankful for the man on a personal level and once more greatful that America produces such globally inspirational figures as he and his beautiful wife.

He was a liberal from a time when "liberal" meant fair and open-minded, not the curse word it has turned into for so many conservatives. He and his wife were great activists and proponents of good will for all. He leaves a great legacy.
He is the sort of Liberal that those of us who now call ourselves Liberals should strive to emulate.
