Shriver may have been a good man with good goals and ideals, but the organization he founded left hundreds, if not thousands of young people, especially young women, at the mercy of vicious thugs in foreign lands and when they were raped and murdered the organization told them it was their own fault, they should have been careful and they'd better not tell anyone about it. How very humanitarian.
Our country is lesser today – A hero of mine has passed
One of my hero’s has passed I offer my condolences to the Shriver family, I thought you would have been a great president and always wished this would or could come to be but the game of wheeling and dealing was beneath you and so you created our Peace Corps to your everlasting memory and contribution to our country and humanity. I shed tears today, without remorse or embarrassment, when I think of and when I heard of your passing. First Mr. Sorenson and now you have left us. I will certainly shed further tears and sighs of regret in the days to follow; let them fling their arrows at me. I will miss you and never forget you and maybe one day we will see each other, I do so hope.
RIP: Sargent Shriver…..thank you for your service and contribution to our country - farewell
Entitled, no, what is happening within the Peace Corps now was not part of the mission of the Corps when it started. Mr Shriver took on the job to help people not harm them. Unfortunately, as was shown on 20/20 just this past Fri (Jan 14) it is happening now. Search out a transcript for it. That said, this was just not the time for Mikey to bring it up.
dano - you couldn't give this man his due without bringing in the Kennedy's sorry for your hate - you see I don't hate the Kennedy's they most of all have given more to this country then they have taken - on the other hand I could bring in the Bush crime family but I won't - grow up and quit your hate
Rest in Peace Sargeant Shriver. You had a wonderful, enriched long life with a great family; the Kennedy's. He, 95 years old.
It is so sad to see the last of the Political Dynasty's is just about over in the US. They wielded power, love, and fun, reaching out to others who needed help and direction.. What a unique family; their offsprings will surely try to emulate them, but it will not be the same.
JFK, RFK, JFK Jr., Ted Kennedy; Sargeant Shriver, Rose Kennedy, Joe Kennedy, Jacqueline Kennedy, Eunice Kennedy. Wow.
It seemed like a fantasy when all of them were living.
Barbara Adams Jackson, your argument to Dano went to far. You did bring in your "hate" with the final part of your statement with your Bush comment. Your comment left no doubt as to how you feel. Dano's comment, well not exactly a proper condolence comment did bring up a point that was made not only in the article but in Mr Shriver's autobiography, he was not a womanizer. If you want to call someone on their "hate" and talk about growing up and quitting "hate," don't let yours out.
It looks like "hate" will be this years go to word for anyone that disagrees with someone. This should mean that people will watch how they call others hateful when their own views/comments spew hate. Course here on the Vine that will not happen.
Your wife is waiting.. May you rest in peace.. the end of an era...when empowering American's was hip...social causes such as Sargent Shriver's Peace Corps..enriches so many lives..
A good and decent man....who exemplified the maxim: better to light a candle than to curse the darkness...rest in peace indeed with his very good and decent wife...we are better for having had them among us.
Thank you, Senator and Mrs. Shriver, for all that you did for individuals as well as the country as a whole. The Special Olympics has been a fantastic program. The Peace Corps has been a wonderfully successful program for people around the world, as well as all the volunteers. Rest in Peace, Sir.
I quite agree. I grew up in an age when such a style of service was important. And did not have to ask what Mr Kennedy meant when he said, "Ask not what your country can do for you......" et cetera, I don't remember the entire speech but I do remember its meaning.
I wonder if Mr. Shriver was saddened to see where this country once stood, patriotism and pride, a beacon to all, to what it has become now. I know I am
My hearfelt condolences to the family. We have lost another great person who did so much for this country and its people. The sad part is they don't exist like this anymore. Rest in Peace.
Yes they do, they just arent given enough chances to do anything... Some of the most righteous good people ive ever known were those who lead very simple lives. Sadly people are no longer recognized for whats in their heart.
The passing of Mr Shriver is the end of an era. The era of good deeds and hard work. What we have left is a pathetic self-centered society, with pathetic citizens. I wonder if there will ever be another Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower or another President like John Kennedy. Men who had goals and guts, men who wanted to enrich the lives of the American people. A truly great man has passed today, and that shouldn't be taken lightly or as some joke or some forum to slam his family, it should just be a sad event.
Sargent Shriver was a man that I always admired. He gave his time to so many and with his wife formed so many organization that helped the poor and those that were aflicted in their lives. Who couldn't admire such a wonderful man
The poor man already looked like the walking dead. It's a blessing he passed and is suffering no longer. Condolances to the family.
I'm wondering if the caption under the picture at the right showing him walking in the church for Sen. Kennedy's funeral is incorrect. How could he have such a young looking son if he is in his 90's? Could this in fact be a grandson? I'm not familiar with the Kennedys and Schrivers so don't know who is who.
Unlike MOST of his wife's family, both Shriver and Eunice always represented dignity and class; one of the BRIGHTEST stars in the Kennedy family. It seems interesting that the best part of the Kennedy family were the spouses they married?
Jackie and Mr. Shriver brought more class and dignity to the Kennedy legacy than all their bootlegging money could ever buy. It's hard to imagine how he tolerated his "in-laws?"
Shriver was a truly decent man! May God Bless him!
What a back-handed slap at the Kennedy family. Couldn't you have just said something nice about the man and let it go at that? Of course not, because these are the kinds of petty games you people like to play. Grow up.
The comment is certainly called for. Sarge may have been a great man.....but all the Kennedy fawning is disgusting.....Mob money....drunken philandering...(not to mention a dead body in the mix of the Kennedy's past drunken philandering..... I applaud Eunice & Sarge for their great works, but please let us not talk about how great the Kennedy family is in general...not when you truly look at where their power came from......Do you really think Joe Kennedy's hands were clean? Back handed slap to the Kennedy's..PLEASE
Hey, Pug.... why don't you tell us about the clean hands of the Bush family? They may not be in bed with the American mob, but they sure are tight with an even more insidious and dangerous set of predators - the Saudi royal family, quite a corrupt and deadly organized lot.
And you want some drunken philandering? Let's look at Dubya's and Jeb's records, and those of their kids. All this and more. Their record of offenses and flaws is right up there with the larger Kennedy clan, but they haven't given a fraction of the benefit, good works, and assistance to the common, middle class American, let alone the damage they have done to the world's opinion of our country.
Sorry to hear this news although aware of Mr Shriver's diagnosis, I am sure he is at peace. As the parent of 2 special needs children and a proud advocate of both military and peaceful service I find myself thankful for the man on a personal level and once more greatful that America produces such globally inspirational figures as he and his beautiful wife.
Thank you Mr. Shriver, for all that you have done for this nation. Rest in peace, both you and your wife Eunice have earned it. My condolences to the family and friends.
He was a liberal from a time when "liberal" meant fair and open-minded, not the curse word it has turned into for so many conservatives. He and his wife were great activists and proponents of good will for all. He leaves a great legacy.
Mr. Shriver was a good man and I will miss him. My condolences to the family and friends of a great liberal.
Mikey I am quite certain that was not part of the mission statement for the corp! Grow up.

He was more of a gentleman than any of the Kennedy mob.. Rest in peace Mr. Shriver.

I knew him when when he was just Corporal Shriver.......
RIP Sargent Shriver

Rest in Peace, and thank you for your service. Many people have benefited from your good works.
If some of you would take as much energy doing something good as you do spilling hate, then this world would be a much better place.
I voted for him for vice president ....a true gentleman........they are very rare these days
A good and decent man....who exemplified the maxim: better to light a candle than to curse the darkness...rest in peace indeed with his very good and decent wife...we are better for having had them among us.
What a fine man. A man of wealth whose heart lay with the people. Such a rareity May you rest in peace Sir.
Deleted comment # 4 and # 5 for death trolling. Knock it off, guys!
My wishes go out to his family.
Sorry to hear the news, didn't realize he was still alive.
Very cool man who lived a respectable life. My condolences to his family.
RIP Mr. Shriver; the world is already a colder place without you.

Beautifully stated, Thank You. And Thanks to the Kennedy-Shriver Family for showing us how to get along with each other.

A great man of great vision, the world needs more men like Mr.Shriver.
My sincerest condolences to his Family and Friends, may you find peace from your loss in good time.
R.I.P.
Who are his survivors? It is customary to list them in a death announcement.
Uh they did
Comment # 16 deleted. Proselytizing. No thanks.
Comment # 17 deleted. Huge derail about Arnold Schwarzenegger.
A truly inspirational man. So sorry for the family and with deepest condolences
The special olympics is such a great organization, may he and his wife RIP, they both will leave a great legacy with special olympics.
Very sad indeed. He did many positive and productive things in his lifetime. My condolences to his family.
Sargent Shriver was a man that I always admired. He gave his time to so many and with his wife formed so many organization that helped the poor and those that were aflicted in their lives. Who couldn't admire such a wonderful man
My condolences to his family.... It is very difficult to lose both of your parents.
May they both rest in peace. They were both great humanitarians.

Anothony is his youngest at 45, so that means Sarge was 50 when he was born.
Nothing wrong withbeing an older Dad. I'm one too.

He is the sort of Liberal that those of us who now call ourselves Liberals should strive to emulate.
