You never know when you may need a friend, and establishing good relations with others with whom we share the world is always a good thing. I happened to be in Ireland the day before Obama arrived, and they seem to appreciate him more over there than we do at home. I think that's a shame.

heart: Most of these viners are out to destroy this president, so no matter what you do or say, they will still hate him. I have resigned to the fact that I will comment on dissenting views if they have some logic behind them and not blatant racism. What I think is peculiar is how some of these viners demonize his African roots and only want to talk about that, but neglect to talk about his white roots and the fact that he was raised by a white mother and grand parents.
The problem with Obama traveling during his term is with the consumer confidence numbers. Even during the Bush years when we were fighting two wars and recovering from a recession, the consumer confidence was much higher. Equally I would argue that the poll in which voters are asked if the country is going in the right direction has become more negative with each passing year.
Just this past week I spoke with a strong progressive that voted for Obama that knows for certain that taxes will continue to rise. So he expects to have less and less money which as a progressive he is o.k. with. I am not o.k. with that prognosis.
So my point is that people know the US is losing ground and thus seeing Obama sipping beer or toasting with champagne is a slap in the fact to many that are feeling the pain and know the future is not looking promising.

Oh, and theboys, taxes are going up in no small part because of the wars and policies that the Bush administration advanced--and extended. Progressives and conservatives alike are at fault for letting the deficit run up; the conservatives more so for advancing an agenda so long of cutting taxes even in the face of deficits. Taxes are also going up partly because a large portion of America's individuals, families, and companies pay taxes far lower than the statutory rate on gross income--or don't pay any taxes at all.
I have far less of a problem with obama making a stopover in Ireland on his way to official business than the numerous trips to Crawford that Bush took--and the length of time that GB spent there.
Even you are smart enough to know, theboys, that either taxes need to go up or spending into Medicare, Social Security (which shouldn't be touched, because it was paid into directly), Medicaid, and the military need to be cut. Or both. Your progressive friend evidently is farther along in bracing that fact than you are. If s/he or you or I have less money than before, it's because disposable income was artificially high (or taxes artificially low) anyway.

Personally, I think you are wrong in believing that raising taxes for everyone is going to solve our problem. Why? Because we already have a govt. with out of control spending. This is the same as giving a bottle of whiskey to an alcoholic. It will make them happy and complacent for a while, and then they will be back for more. Until govt. spending is brought under control, under no circumstances should taxes be raised. The waste is rampant. Do you actually think that our govt. can find NO place to reduce spending, like cutting out duplication of services, mismanagement, and the out right giving away of tax money to Illegals and other countries, money that we have to borrow to give away? (I could go on, but time is short.) All of this is mandatory and cannot be trimmed? Most Americans have had to cut back and live within their means, can we expect no less from our govt.? I am for things that he has proposed and yes, we have to get spending under control, but I do not think it's should be done by slashing education or preventative health care. As for as the greater issue of spending both parties has a hand in it and that cannot be over looked.
Willow: my stance on how this president is treated still stands. I didn't pull a card, I am pointing out what I have observed on the vine, talk radio and other medium. Again, I challenge you to prove me wrong. I am for reduce spending and doing away with duplicate services. I work closely with GSA and other government agencies and I have come across things that we can do without. As far as taxes are concern, if we are truly in this together, then we should know that reducing taxes at this time is not what the economy needs or can stand (IMO). I think the tax cuts should have expired for everyone. If we can look to reset the federal budget to a previous year, then we should do the same to taxes.

In the big picture, it won't make up the difference, there is too large of a gap between the income generated by the current tax (or even with a tax increase) and the amount of money needed to maintain current spending levels. His voting record as a junior congressman, which he was at time of election to president, was mainly, "present". His college transcripts are being hidden from the public, so we have no idea whether he just squeaked by or was near the top of his class. Given his ego, I would say that if he had made grades that were near the top, you would never hear the end of it, but you hear nothing, so my take, is that they are nothing to brag about. If the naysayers would look at the big picture instead of the narrow view so many are so well known for then the benefits that come from engaging in the global environment by (any) the US President would become apparent to them.
There was a time when the USA could look no farther than its borders and remain prosperous, this is no longer true and never will be again no matter how much the protectionists would like it to be.
It is important that positive and mutually beneficial relationships be formed with global partners, now and in the future. The problems we have in the USA will not be solved by concentrating on the USA and ignoring the rest of the world.
Obama is the man for the job. The narrow minded are always complaining with the negative view that he lacks experience for the position he holds, calling him nothing more than a "community organizer." It is well known that his expertise is in building and transforming communities for the betterment of those involved. His work in Chicago transformed blighted and depressed economies and reduced tensions and crime. The positive results lead to urban renewal and hope for the future not only in those neighborhoods but also in the larger state of Illinois.
President Obama is applying that model on a global scale and the USA to be true to its values should be behind him.
Let me see if I've got this straight. Bush went to the G-8 meeting in 2006 and that was alright with the cons but Obama goes to a G-8 meeting and it's a vacation.
Bush gropes the German Chancellor and that is alright with the cons but Obama checks his Irish roots and he's criticized.
Bush spent nearly as much time on his Texas ranch as in the White House yet a business trip overseas by Obama is labeled a vacation by cons.
Bush and the Republican from 2001 - 2007 set the economy up to collapse with tax cuts to the rich without cutting spending but any effort to get the economy back on track is met with Republican blockade.

DZ, it is not the presidents responsibility to pass a budget. He submitted a budget as well. It is CONGRESS's priority to pass a budget, something that is still being filibustered by republicans so they can secure more money for the rich. Actually, it is illegal for the president to simply make a budget and turn it into law without congress. So, you want him to do something that is physically impossible because your good ol boys club won't pass the legislature they are supposed to? Also because compromise is a dirty word to them...

Sure, they want to tax the rich, tax the corporations, shut down the coal industry, shut down the oil industry (at least in this country, while sending money over seas to support foreign oil), shut down the insurance industry, destroy the world's best health care system, and the list goes on and on... Heck, even the socialsts of Europe told us not to go the route of socialized medicine, but Obama and the libs didn't listen. If Obamacare is so great, why over 1300 waivers and counting? I'll tell you why, because Obama doesn't want the truth of the destruction of our health care industry to be known and felt until after the 2012 elections. Perhaps you are unaware of the waivers or why they exist. I'll tell you. The law requires employers who provide health insurance benefits to employees to provide a certain level of benefits. Thus, although companies like McDonalds provides health insurance to it's employees, it's not "government approved" insurance. To provide the "government approved" insurance would put McDonalds out of business. Why? Because McDonald's has a lot of part-time employees, including a lot of high school and college kids, as well as retired people. The government approved health care means that it would be cost prohibitive to employee anyone of these people because you can't survive paying someone who works 10 hours a week with full insurance that costs $1000/month. Of course, various dems have admitted that this is the idea of the law, to create a situation where employers will no longer cover employees, and thus lead to a single payer system. Yep, the world is thrilled with us. They can finally compete because our President has made it possible.

It's important to know your Irish history. Around 753B.C., the first human set foot in Ireland. Before that time, only the Irish lived there.

Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected for four terms (died during his fourth). He had many adversaries in his time, but is still today considered one of the greatest U.S. Presidents. Apparently, the far right was not too happy about this and took steps to put term limits in place.
To be honest, term limits os the ont issue I agree with the teabaggers on. Even if we have a good president like Obama, not having limits still sets a precedent that we don't want to set. At the same time Obama has taken around 50 as of August 28, 2010 the exact numbers were Bush 114 Obama 48 both took time the following Christmas. Bush I and Reagan were notorious vacationers while Clinton took relatively few and Carter took less than any modern president. The President is NOT in Ireland to "find his Irish roots", he's there to promote peace, goodwill and, most importantly, ECONOMIC TIES. His visit to Ireland falling immediately after the Queen's visit - the first for a reigning monarch of Great Britain and the first since Queen Victoria! - is being seen in Europe as an immense strengthening of ties across both sides of the pond. Americans may be arrogant enough to think that we "don't need Europe" but - surprise! - we actually do. The EU and, indeed, the rest of the world spent the 8 years of the Bush debacle discovering just how much they *don't* need the US. They're moving on - moving forward - and leaving us in the dust chasing after them. If you all want the US to become the second rate country it's currently on the way to becoming, just keep up that "America rocks and everyone else sucks" attitude and see where it gets us.

It isn't the housing that's the problem... it's people like Barney Frank and Obama who are bent on bringing down this country with entitlements and the belief those without should have the same as those who do.
I have numerous friends and relatives (sorry one just passed away - he had congestive heart failure and couldn't work) who have collected their entitlements for over 15 years - they get housing, access to any medical care they need, dental work and food from the government.
One who told me they would be fools to work because they'd not get enough money to live they way they've been accustomed to. One in particular receives over $1200/month for doing nothing, lives in section 8 housing (which by the way is a 2 bedroom apartment with cable TV, etc. paid for by the state.
Obama continues in the efforts to increase entitlements and teach those receiving it's acceptable. In the meantime I have to pay over $38000 out for taxes and health care before I can make a dime... (I own a small business with one employee) - she takes home over $50000 and since she has children and is a single mom pays zero taxes on her income.
In addition, she has me tax another $500/month out of her check to pay to the government in withholding taxes -- which at the end of the year she gets back plus another $2 grand because she's poor!
Now we have a president who says he can trace his ancestry, but can not product anything but a photocopy of his birth certificate.
