Roy Wilson - Providing additional information? As a major American History buff, especially Revolutionary War, this is beyond moronic. Paul Revere himself recounted his ride that night, and nothing in his writings indicate anything about taunting the British. For me it has nothing to do with Sarah Palin, but it has everything to do with running your trap when you have absolutely no idea what your talking about. I will gladly debate this subject with anyone.

On Tuesday evening, the 18th, it was observed that a number of soldiers were marching towards the bottom of the Common. About 10 o'clock, Dr. Warren [Joseph Warren, one of the few Patriot leaders who had remained in Boston] sent in great haste for me and begged that I would immediately set off for Lexington, where Messrs. Hancock and Adams were, and acquaint them of the movement, and that it was thought they were the objects.

When I got to Dr. Warren's house, I found he had sent an express [fast messenger] by land to Lexington — a Mr. William Daws [Dawes]. The Sunday before, by desire of Dr. Warren, I had been to Lexington, to Messrs. Hancock and Adams, who were at the Rev. Mr. Clark's. The whole point of sending out the riders was to alert the colonists that British troops were on the march, so that they could be prepared for battle. Don't you think warning the British would take away from this?

Reality is different. Yes, Revere yelled and warned that the British were coming. He stopped at houses along the way to warn that the British were coming. He didn't hide the fact that the British were coming. And guess what? There were British who lived along the way and they were also warned, if they had ears. Only libs think that all that screaming was meant for the people to wake up and say ok, and go back to sleep.

Anyone know were Revere went after Lexington? To Concord! Why Concord? Because it is a nice place to have a picnic? Yup that must be it. It couldn't be because that was where a major arms depot was located at, could it? Paul Revere did warn the British in a sence but not in the way she suggested. Paul Revere was captured on his way and no doubt this alerted them that there was resistance in the region.

If you like to look at things side ways it could be argued that Sputnik bankrupted the Soviet Union. Sputnik was responsible for the arms race to enter the heavens. The cost of the space race that followed was in part the cause of the bankruptcy of the State. It requires an a lot of imagination to get there however.

Vice President leading the Senate. This is where she is absolutly right. The Vice President is Senate Pro Tem and as such is leader of the Senate. The role traditionally is given to the majority leader but according to the Constitution it is his job. The Vice President is role to break ties if there is one.

The Constitution is based on the Bible. Since most laws are based on Bible that wouldn't be too difficult to believe.

Kodiak is the larges island if you ignore Hawaii. Since she doesn't believe that Obama is a US citizen then I can see her argument. After all Obama was born in Hawaii.

Palin's timing might be off and she failed to mention a few key events, but it is documented that Paul Revere was captured and questioned by Major Edward Mitchell who instructed that Revere be taken at gunpoint to Lexington. Revere did warned Mitchell that the people had been alerted and were taking up arms to make a stand. The British were spooked and released Revere in order to make haste. This set of circumstances is discussed here:

If you did some more research, you'd know that a: Revere didn't shout "The British are coming!" (Please try to look beyond Schoolhouse Rock) and b. yes, the British soldiers were spooked because, up until Revere was actually captured, the British regulars did not even know what their mission was and there was much speculation that it was another training march by General Gage. Ensign Jeremy Lister of the 10th Foot [infantry] described the eerie scene of the gathering militia because as they were marching towards Lexington, in the dawn light, they could see the colonials running past them in the fields in order to get ahead of the British soldiers. That's when they realized it wasn't training.

On top of this, Private James Marr of the 4th Foot describes an encounter during the march when they were fired upon. He says that the troops were "green" and untested. Again, poking ones nose into a researched book, we get information that contradicts your unsubstantiated opinion! Go look in Fisher's book yourself...it's on page 187 and he has annotation for his bibliography. You bring nothing to the table!

Your comment about "formations" is irrelevant to the discussion and is an attempt to distract from a topic that you are not prepared to discuss! British firing lines and battle formations have nothing to do with the question of whether or not Revere warned the Brits so I'm not sure what your point is. If it has to do with the actual engagement, and you are alluding to the "Rebels" fighting differently, you'd still be wrong because the militiamen formed up on the green to face them. Whether or not the British were trainees or regulars was not something that could have been known by Paul Revere at the time. While the word formation may have not have been the best, what was true was the British were known to be arrogant and overconfident and not likely to be spooked by any single rider. Most of the British troops at the time thought that these rebels were, at best, a minor nuisance.

I still say if it was not his intention to get caught the simple fact of his racing to Concord was not to spook the British. It should be noted that Paul Revere was not the only rider. There were several some of which reached Concord. Paul Revere is the only to become famous for it.

Remember the argument was that his ride was intended to spook the British as well as to alert militias. If his intention was spook the British then he would have needed to get caught. I don't believe that was the case.

Debianni. I would like to set this straight. Yes the Constitution is loosely based on the Magna Carta. What I have been trying to state is that most of what was written had some religious basis. This is not to state that any part of it could be taken directly from the bible but rather it, as well as most laws at the time, had some religious tint to it. I have been stating that this requires a great deal of imagination but it could be argued.

As far as the leader of the Senate goes it would depend on whether you believe that there is a Senate leader or not. The majority leader is the leader of his/her party not of the Senate. The majority leader is only the leader of the Senate if he can hold his/her party together. This is something that has been shown to be a difficult thing to do. Oddly enough the Republicans are much better at doing this than Democrats.

The Vice President's job is to preside over the Senate. This is where the idea that he leads the Senate comes from. This in no way suggests that he has any control over what the Senate does. The way I see it is that either the Vice President is the leader of the Senate or that it has no leader at all. Considering how well it is working now the latter is probably true.

I stated earlier that Kodiak island was the largest island if you ignored Hawaii. Sarah Palin does not believe that Obama was born in the United States. President Obama was born in Hawaii so she must think that Hawaii is not a State. If this were true Kodiak would be the largest island

She said that he rang bells and fired shots. He got captured and did tell the British soldiers that the colonists knew they were coming. She happened to be "correct" about that. If you watch the video, she obviously was stumped and had to think really hard.

If one really feels an urge to defend her, just say she misspoke under pressure and what she said was essentially twisted to make her look bad. That's not a legitimate excuse for her stupidity, but it's a acceptable explanation for her gaffe. I think this is really very telling. Not just about her and her lack of any useful or accurate knowledge, but more importantly about just how far some people will go to try to justify their support for her. So, Revere did indeed happen to answer the questions of a Brit commander when accosted. It takes a whole lot of salt to fit that into what Palin said. I'm sorry if I'm not going to swallow that spoonful of spun BS you are offering as an explanation.

I can understand a mistake like that. I'm pretty sure we all have signed the wrong date/year down especially when distracted. Birthday, the previous year, etc etc. Common mistake.

Dates can spark memories - possibly May 24th 2008 was an important day, or a day which he had to write down on a lot of paperwork. That can spark a 'muscle memory.' The year 2008 was important, when was the last time he was in Britain? In that location? When was the last time he had to sign a registrar? There are a million little reasons that can spark a 'brain fart' like that.

I must come to Palin's defense. It has been more than 2 years now since this woman appeared on the national scene. The news media and the general public have been all over her ever since. She is constantly pushed, or allowed access to, and within, areas of expertise which require at least, a working basic knowledge of a multiplicity of intertwined political and histotical data, past and present. The lady has no such knowledge or idea's relative to such, and obviously is absent the mental capability to grasp her deficiencies thereof, and like many of lower mental aptitude, she is happy to be the national dunce. I contend, we, who damn well know better, the media, especially "fox news", and the republican party, are being sorry as hell when we use this woman or anyone of like "lack of mental capacity" as the national fool. The fact she was Alaska's Governor tends to magnify the mean spirited exploitation. Let the lady find her way within her abilities, and within her natural and fitting elements.

Palin's timing might be off and she failed to mention a few key events, but it is documented that Paul Revere was captured and questioned by Major Edward Mitchell who instructed that Revere be taken at gunpoint to Lexington. Revere did warned Mitchell that the people had been alerted and were taking up arms to make a stand. The British were spooked and released Revere in order to make haste. This set of circumstances is discussed here:

This information was soon after confirmed by firing of alarum guns, the bells ranf, and the drums beat to Arms in concord, and were answered by all the villages Round."

The is a slight error here in the retelling, namely that Revere's saddle was cut. I attribute this to some forgetfulness of embellishment by by Richard Pope, the non-commissioned officer.

Considering Palin was providing a candid comment without necessarily having the material right in front of her, she did hit amazingly close to the mark.

Of course, you can ignore the comments of Paul Revere, Esther Forbes a Pulitzer Prize winner and author of a Revere biography and a published university historian. But who's really the moron between all of you and Sarah Palin (hint: its not Palin).

@nonkjo -- if you listen to the audio of Ms. Palin's statement about Paul Revere's ride, she stated: "he who warned the British that they weren't gonna be takin' away our arms by ringin' those bells and making sure as he's ridin' his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells that we were gonna be secure and we were gonna be free." Think her meaning is completely clear - that Revere, with warning shots and bells, was riding to warn the British. She was not talking about his capture and what occurred while he was held at gunpoint. Just because she stumbled upon "the mark" doesn't mean her intent or accounting of Paul Revere's ride is accurate. Even a blind pig finds an acorn once in a while.

I do not hold Palin to the standard of a history professor with a PhD who specializes in the American Revolution do I don't expect her to recite in detail an impromptu history of the war.

Were there bells? Yep. Were there gunshots? Yes (the devil is in the details though because the main issue is when were the shots heard.). Did Paul Revere warn the British? According to several scholars, yes (again, there are additional details necessary to paint a clear picture, but there is a body of research that says it did happen).

The funny thing is, you say she "stumbled on the mark" which I understand to mean you she was accidentally right? So what are you arguing about then, her delivery? That's pathetic!

Tell you what, as soon as you can explain how our president can fail to pronounce "corpsmen" from prepared remarks with the same level of interpretation and scrutiny and hateful vitriol, then I'll treat your opinion like it even matters!

I already stated what I meant. The people you quoted do say that Revere warned the British when he was captured and held at gunpoint, and I did not suggest otherwise. Ms. Palin, on the other hand, was clear that Paul Revere's ride (which occurred prior to his capture) was to warn the British. Capture and ride - 2 different things. 'Nuff said.

It's unfortunate that you think disagreeing with you or Ms. Palin, or re-purposing one of your own remarks, is "hateful vitriol." I don't hate Ms. Palin, nor did I speak of her with hate. For you to paint it otherwise says more about you than me.

What I find pathetic is your attempt to defend this woman. She did not have to go into detail about Paul Revere. The most she had to say was that he (Paul Revere) warned the colonists that the British were coming. Simple as that. Everyone in our generation learned this in elementary school.

There was someting redeeming about John McCain's speech when he conceded the 2008 election to President Obama. It was commendable. It's too bad for him that he didn't stand up to his party and select a qualified vice-presidential candidate.

It's sad. Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Eisenhower--they all must be turning in their graves at what the Republican party has become.

McCain would probably be President now if he would have stuck to his beliefs and had a different running mate. I think Sarah Palin did him in and people were terrified that she would be President if something happened to him.

McCain's being front runner for the White House was all a RNC set up. They never wanted McCain in the first place. They didn't really care if they won in 2008. Why? Can you really see Republicans making things better after they already made it worse?

I've always respected Senator McCain even when I don't always agree with him. He is the last of the honorable countrymen we have in this nation. He may not always be on the mark. But his country is his real first love. He's never really been the neoconservative that Boehner, McConnell, Perry, Walker or the rest of the Twerps of the GOP are.

But, the reality is that had McCain won, the country would have been done in by the GOP. You don't go from creating a mess to fixing it in a year or 2.

Yes, a basic knowledge of American history is necessary for a presidential "candidate", especially someone like her who considers themselves a "true American". Also, American history is taught in EVERY high school, as in most states (if not all) it's a required course for graduation.

The more pervasive problem is that the right wing makes up many 'facts' and even when proven wrong, like Palin, refuses to recant or admit the mistakes and falsehoods. If you watch her face you will see that even as she spoke she was struggling to speak and out of her depth of knowledge.

When you can never admit you made a mistake you must continue in wrong directions once you start going down a bad road.

Julie ...every area of this country has its history. But, Palin wants to reinvent where this country's history began. Anyone who has ever visited Massachusetts knows where that bell tower Longfellow referred to in his poem, "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere". Next Palin will be saying there was no Betsy Ross, John Hancock or Benjamin Franklin. That's unnecessary revisionist history with a backroom agenda.

It's one thing to reinvent history for yourself. But it's entirely another to try to reinvent it for people who live in the places where this history took place. I live just a few miles shy of the Battle of Monmouth and the barracks of George Washington in NJ.

Factual and ACTUAL history of Paul Revere's ride is not simply what is in the poem. There were more than just that one "ride". The city of Boston had a warning system of sorts...wherein people fired guns and rang bells to be heard throughout as warnings and alerts. And the intention of the British was to confiscate the rebels gunpowder, making the rebels unable to defend against them. Revere did in a sense warn the British that the rebels were ready for them and would not be defeated.

SO...now who're the blithering idiots? Maybe those people, including myself, until I looked it up, who got their "history" from a poem??

I got my history from the several months of my life spent on studying the American Revolution. Thats what they teach when you grow up miles from where Paul Reveres ride took place.
Palin said that it was Reveres intention to warn the British. It wasn't. He was captured. That is where she was way off. Also, I didnt have to research to find out that he was captured and ended up telling the British under stress. As I stated before, we learned this info in school.

This is NOT what happened. He did NOT fire shots or ring bells. He did warn the British, after being captured.
