Ask a Republican, you get one answer, ask a Democrat, and you get another. Now, of course, we are going to the extremes of what the Constitution means to each party, but this has been and will continue to be a very basic philosophical debate in our country.

Ben, I don't think you can call the 2010 elections a wide, sweeping victory, as the voter turnout was very low. Yes, the TP won big, but all their insane ideas have come to light now, the people have woken up, and the Presidential election will have a huge turnout this time. Ben - the kool aid thing is so old and so juvenile and speaks volumes about anyone who is silly enough to bring it up. The Tea Party is taking the GOP down and everyone knows it. They are too radical and want to take the country back 100 years.
Nurse: Yup, ol Norquist is an upstart, a pretender to the throne. We all know who the real ruler of the universe and the country is, don't we. Think if you had your way he would be crowned and anointed as holy. Maybe do away with the title of president and rename it Emperor.
Ben, the only one drinking the coolaid is you, sorry to break to you bud, but you are on the wrong side of the debate. Except if you follow FauxNews and their coverage, then the tea party is HUGE! But please keep it up, and talk to your neighbors it will only make it easier for a mega landslide in 2012 in the house, senate, governors and the presidency. Hello supermajority!
These pledges are nothing more than blackmail by organizations. Either sign my pledge or you do not get my support or money. The head of every organization that had a candidate (Democrat or Republican) sign a pledge in exchange for support and money should be be charged with blackmail and thrown in jail. And first on the list to be thrown in jail should be Grover Norquist.
While the pledges are largely partisan and (I think) largely misguided, it's called free speech. Signing a pledge is just symbolic, but the reality is we only support those politicians that believe in what we believe in individually. A pledge is a barometer for what a politician thinks. Besides, every politician has the right to not sign the pledge, as some have done with very good reasons. Jail? Blackmail? Hardly.
If an organization wants to donate money because they support a candidate with no strings attached, fine. But by requiring the signing of the pledge, you are saying support our organizations policies or you will not get our support or money. That is blackmail.
But Pat, that scenario happens all of the time. The Human Rights Campaign, for example, or the National Rifle Association, for another example, say they will not support a politician if the politician doesn't support gay rights or the rights of the individual to bear arms. Is that blackmail? No, it's supporting a politician that believes what that organization does. Again, a "pledge" just measures a politician's belief on a topic.
If you support a candidate because of their position and want to donate, there is nothing wrong with that. I support candidates that support my basic principles, but I do not require them to support every position I have. But giving a candidate piece of paper listing the organization's positions and having them sign it, agreeing to support every one of the organization's positions in order to receive the organization's support and money is blackmail. We should also be going our current representatives and senators (regardless of party) and demanding their resignations for signing these pledges.
Maybe coercion or extortion are more appropriate terms.
Blackmail involves a hidden fact that could be revealed, like what news-corp may have been doing to British politicians with the information they got by hacking phones and such. Not revealing info in exchange for unregulated mergers and acquisitions.
You just don't get it do you? It's not blackmail to withhold donations to a politician for not believing in your principles. It's called politics and everybody plays the game including you. Call it a pledge, call it a campaign promise, call it whatever you want (except blackmail). It's the political system we have. In the end, the pledges and promoises will be broken after the politican wins the election.
It's obvious there is no honor in the GOP. They have to have them sign pledges because they lie so much. They run on one thing and do another. They ran on jobs and the economy and won. They then went after personal freedoms. Sad.
I saw Norquist on tv two days ago. He is a clown; could not put a sentence together and giggled throughout the entired time. He suggested that the tax pledge is not as serious as we all think, but, was a way for his organization to find if the candidates are serious about not raising taxes. He's a joke and so is the Republican Party. This cut cap and balance bill is also not serious because it will not pass the senate and is a completely waste of time. These people need to be imprisoned; but that will not ever happen.
Gotta go to my below minimum wage job now, thank you republicans for your jobs bill. Whenever you decide jobs (private or public) are what's needed to boost the economy please sign the pledge.
To sign these "pledges" is absolutely the STUPIDEST thing that any politician of either party can ever do.
You can count on the fact that at some point some special interest group is going to dig up this pledge you signed and bludgeon you over the head with it.
By signing these things you have created the means of your own extortion.
And you almost guarantee a government mired in gridlock with no flexibility to make pragmatic compromises for the benefit of the country.
Rather you've handed your political fate to the ideologues and done your country a great disservice.
Over 80% of the country wants to keep SS, NOT destroy it by vouchers (privatizing). At least they are trying to protect all Americans. Personally I don't care about pledges, it is best not to box yourself in (in most cases). Having said that I disagree with every teabag pledge. Actions speak louder than words, and nobody wants the Ryan plan.
I just hope Bachmann continues to sign pledge after pledge. She has boxed herself into a corner and now, no matter how much she tries to backstep, it will haunt her.
MJL-3 - you are absolutely right. Even a high number of the GOP want the rich taxed more to help offset the deficit. Reality is beginning to sink in.
Only weaklings sign pledges, and only fools need them.
It always amazes me how many of these socalled moral beacons, especially the ones who want to impose their beliefs on everyone else, end up discovered in their hypocrisy. As further OVERCOMPENSATION they have to devise pledges and get other people to sign them. This is all a sub concious attempt to bolester their own insecurity. This is such an obvious and embarassing disclosure of their own weakness I am amazed that they indulge themselves in it.
@Jim -- Your math is a tad bit off but my purpose is to show these lamebrains who post that only weaklings sign pledges or shouldn't sign pledges, etc. better watch how they make idiotic postings and just say "pledges are idiotic if we don't believe in the pledge."
The politicians who are signing these pledges, may or may not believe in them. They are doing it to score political points are putting special interests before the people. Grover Norquist is a special interest.
Any pledge by any politician is wrong period, Republican or Democrat, these organizations they are pledging too do not represent all the American people but a special interest, therefor like a soldier they represent all Americans in their district or state not just the ones they agree with.
Ben - Tea Partiers are not upholding anything. They campaigned on more jobs yet not one of them has even remotely suggested any program to produce those jobs. The Tea Partiers are just another group of lying GOPers.
Pledges a fools and ignorant's paradise. Norquist is like a goat herder.

It makes me sad to watch people and leaders both in Government and NGO proposing solutions to all kind of problems. Bill Clinton to Bill Gates and lots of others are trying to solve one or the other kind of problems. Here often solution creates bigger problem down the road. Nobody is talking about the larger picture that says where we are coming from and where we are going.
The world’s economic problems can be laid to only few things. Fast growing access to health care that has pre-teen and old age death. This has increased non-productive population and created whole new series of expectations and expenses. Thanks to democracy and technology everyone knows what can be done for sick as well as old. There is a sense that we can solve all the problems without adding others.
What need model for technologically advanced society. Here an actor or ball player or a lucky young man like Google or facebook founder can amass huge wealth in very short time. It is like lottery. Winner takes all but average Joe buys that lottery ticket. This model slowly erodes the status, economic prosperity and relevance of average citizen who is reduced to status of drone in the army of ants. Our productivity is high while access to rewards are skewed.
Unless leaders, economist, comes to terms with how to make this “mega-human behemoth” operate and be managed that will provide meaningful role to everyone and fruits of labor that can sustain self respect and at minimum survival+ living standard, we are in trouble.
Good post, Raj. I especially liked the paragraph about:

I was just thinking about this the other day. Mostly, getting ahead, way ahead, in America is like winning the lottery. Sure, hard work helps, being smart along with the hard work helps even more but in the end, the biggest factor is luck. Hard work and smarts will get you by and may even keep you comfortable but to really get ahead, you need luck.
I spent 30 years in the Military, every time we reenlisted we took the oath of enlistment, not much different than the oath of office a politician takes, as a soldier we were not allowed to take any other oath or swear allegiance to any other entity, politicians should meet the same standard they hold the military to.
Good idea, your country comes first. They used to call them statesmen because they put the country first over party. These days you have to swear to be a total Wrong Winger to get votes from your base. Look at how many Tea Party people bumped off Republican candidates. It was a coup inside their own party and they act like it was nothing at all.
Some people seem to equate a pledge with a campaign promise which is generally held to be a wish list. Whats wrong with the promise to "try" rather than "will" or "won't." "I'll try not to increase taxes," rather than "I pledge not to increase taxes, no way, no how, so help me Grover." I believe that that sort of blood oath and the formal oath of office does not mix and is a conflict of interest. Our congress owes its allegiance to the constitution of our government and not some special interest group and if they can't stand up to them they should be recalled or at the very least voted out next term which by then may be to late.
"I pledge allegence to the KOCHS to EXXON and the RICH, to all the whackos in the world who cannot find a nitch, I pledge to take the marriage vow and how slavery was good too, I pledge to bankrupt all of us cause that's what nutjobs do!"
"I pledge allegence to the KOCHS to EXXON and the RICH, to all the whackos in the world who cannot find a nitch, I pledge to take the marriage vow and how slavery was good too, I pledge to bankrupt all of us cause that's what nutjobs do!"
"I swear by God this sacred Oath. — I will render unconditional obedience to our Fuehrer Grover Norquist, and as a loyal Tea Bagger, I will be ready at any time to stake my life for this Oath."
Laugh and frolic little children, you are so very clever. Hopefully the democrats and Obama will succeed, irresponsibility and unaccountability is needed in a bloated government and you are just the people to support it. Let us borrow ever more money and raise taxes, let us continue to spend and let there be no accounting for our actions. We are there to take advantage, we got ours and to hell with you. Our children can deal with it, we will frolic and play, let the future take care of itself, responsibility is sooo boring.
Let's see: I pledge to abandon the notion of critical thinking and freedom of religion. I pledge to abandon rationality and only vote as I am directed to by a small fringe group of ideological zealots, thus putting their positions ahead of the majority of Americans or ultimately doing what is in the best interest of the country as a whole. I pledge to disavow everything the founding fathers stood for, so help me GROVER NORQUIST...
Rather than pledging their allegence to the special interests they all hold so near and dear, how about pledging to represent the interests of "WE THE PEOPLE" for a change.
Because the pro-choice, pro-gay, pro-foreigner, anti-marriage/children/abstinence/GOD folks aren't really people and therefore deserve to be politically ignored.
At least, that's the mindset I interpret as being behind pledges for allegiance to only SOME American citizens.
Sorry, Tea Party, but people who don't agree with you are just as American as you are, and trying to deny them their right to representation and a chance at being heard is unpatriotic, intolerant, and damn near treason for anyone who cares about this country and its laws.
"Sorry, Tea Party, but people who don't agree with you are just as American as you are, and trying to deny them their right to representation and a chance at being heard is unpatriotic, intolerant, and damn near treason for anyone who cares about this country and its laws."
You're correct, I'd add the Tea Nuts are Un-American. They hate teachers, American auto workers, anyone trying to better themselves and make a decent living. They despise the middle class. "Can't ya understand that until we bring American wages in line with third world countries we will never be able to compete with them?" These idiots cannot comprehend the idea that if people are paid low wages they pay less tax, and cannot contribute to the economy no matter how much they would like to? These folks are so brainwashed they demand things that go against their best interests because some talking head tells them to. Nobody is as Anti American as a Tea Bagger. Sad, really flippin' sad.
The tea party is mostly angry frightened middle age whites who see their dreams going up in smoke. So far so good. That could easily be me. Where we differ is that the tea party blames the poor and disenfranchised for all the ills in our society, and gives a free pass to the wealthy and their corporate minions who sucked the punch bowl dry.
which is also how "generic" the rest of the republican candidates are. I love those polls "a generic republican can beat him". I haven't seen a generic republican in 5-10 years. Its like over a long time period someone took all the reasonable republicans and replaced them with these zealots.
If a REAL republican stood up they might win, so far all we have are nut jobs, and even more nut jobs considering the run (Perry only has a chance because he is good looking, other than that he is a horrid man with horrid belief's, no person who advocates seceding from the union can lead that union).
Not true. Romney is as close to a "real" republican (or what they used to be) as they get, but he won't be endorsed by the Teanuts, will suffer in the primaries and probably quit (as he always does). It's too bad, because he would be the only one to give Obama a half-a--ed challenge. Yep, they're really screwed.
I pledge to disavow everything the founding fathers stood for, so help me GEORGE SOROS...
Wrong G-man there vega. Only Grover Norquist has a pledge that every card carrying Republican has to sign in order to get access to the Republican financing system.
If I'm wrong, post a link to any pledge that George Soros has put out and said that Democrats must sign or they won't get his financial backing.
Sorry Vega, no democrat or independent is required or bullied into signing such ludicrous pledges. Tea party candidates and most republicans have the political backbone of shell fish. You can take a position, but you shouldn't have them forced on you.
Norquist must be doing the talk show rounds. I heard the interview that Terry Gross did with him, which was a little "contentious".
Through all that, what I was hearing was a "one trick pony" - no increase in taxes by whatever means. What I did not hear were any rational specifics on how to accomplish this. I think Norquist, as many, lives in a world in which simple arithmetic does not apply - it is a world of "projections".
Our last president has a Master's in Business Administration from Harvard (we all recall that, right?). He also quite successfully kept the cost of two wars out of the budget; quite a feat of "creative accounting", to justify tax cuts we could ill-afford.
War taxes are nothing new despite different names (war tax, surcharge) and have existed during the Civil War (first one), WW 1, WW 2, and the Vietnam war. Although not always popular, they certainly do bring home the point that this a "shared sacrifice" whether you personally agree with the specific war or not.
Political pledges are for for candidates who don't, won't, or more likely can't think for themselves. It interesting how these pledges, those who wrote them, and those who sign them all spring out of the conservative, fringe elements on the right. The beauty of these pledges is how they magically manage to reduce complex problems and issues down to simplistic, black and white ideology. One big reason why this country is witnessing the political farce going on with the debt ceiling issue is the dogmatic adherence by Republicans and Tea Baggers to the flat earth mind set esposed in many of these pledges. Republicans are engaged in poltical brinkmanship. They are playing a game of chicken to see who will blink first. But too many on the right have intractably committed themselves to serving pledges. Their mind sets are that death before dishonor is preferrable to compromise, no matter what the consequences are to their constitutents. Stupid and dangerous.
I guess you feel pledges by Republicans are ok but not pledges by Democrats, since you have only acknowledged it is wrong for Democrats to sign this one pledge that you are spamming?
It would be so refreshing to see political candidates, especially Republicans but Democrats as well, show some independence and open-mindedness. Refuse to sign these pledges, whatever they are. Denounce those who try to force you into a steadfast position. Being a good legislator means being able so analyze a situation and act accordingly. You can still stick to your principles, to be sure, but BLIND ALLEGIANCE to someone or some organization that has a singular goal is unconscionable. Work for the American people or get out!
If people could trust politicians, you wouldn't need so many pledges. They promise one thing on the campaign trail, and do another (sometimes the exact opposite) after they get elected. They've broken so many "promises" no one believes what they say anymore. They have to sign a pledge document to be believed.
Here is a little political test. Replace the <blank> from each of these 12 statements with a word of your choice. Clue: There is only one word that replaces them all.
1. <blank> seek to purge forces, ideas, and systems deemed to be the cause of decadence and degeneration and produce their nation's rebirth based on commitment to the national community based on organic unity where individuals are bound together by supra-personal connections of ancestry, culture, and blood.
2. <blank> commonly utilize paramilitary organizations for violent attacks on political opponents, people whom they oppose, or overthrowing a political system.
3. The majority of scholars generally consider <blank> to be on the far (political) right.
4. <blank> manifested itself in elite-led but populist "armed party" politics opposing socialism and liberalism and promising radical politics to rescue the nation from decadence.
5. A number of <blank> movements described themselves as a "third force" outside of the traditional political spectrum.
6. <blank> took advantage of the situation by allying with industrial businesses and attacking workers and peasants.
7. <blank> adopted policies such as promoting family values, including promotion of a woman's role as a mother.
8. <blank> pursued policies of social indoctrination through propaganda in education and the media and regulation of the production of educational and media materials.
9. <blank> tends to be anti-intellectual.
10. <blank> banned literature on birth control and increased penalties for abortion, declaring both crimes against the state.
11. <blank> movements and governments opposed homosexuality.
12. <blank>'s economy was based on corporatism, and a number of other <blank> movements similarly promoted corporatism.
Can you recognize any of this in today's American political scene?
Does anyone care to guess what the <blank> word is?
Hmm ... I would say I know what <blank> is, but would love to see what others guess it is. (Hint - it's not a word or ideal that is real popular IN THIS COUNTRY)
I don't see number 1 in the US, except for a tiny minority, ad the USA is one of the most diverse countries on earth (no statistics, just an impression).
The references to Corporatism, are interesting though. I always heard that Corporations did fabulously well during the Nazi period, because you could bribe them to eliminate your competition, and the Corporations had plenty of money to do that. Sound familiar?
Its obvious the the <blank> referes to fascism or fascists and its also obvious that fascism is a extreme right ideology no matter how much the far-right tries to deny and project fascism as a socialist movement.
Its obvious the the <blank> referes to fascism or fascists and its also obvious that fascism is a extreme right ideology no matter how much the far-right tries to deny and project fascism as a socialist movement.
You can easily find the answer. Just copy and paste (omitting ) the first statement into Google. The article will come up about 5 down.
The conditions that led to blank are quite interesting.
This is really food for thought. It is all too easy to think that such a thing could NEVER happen here. No doubt, others thought that as well (before it was too late).
They () are always among us, waiting for the right conditions to germinate. All they lack is a critical mass......a coalition (of hate). That is fast approaching.

Is that blackmail? No, it's supporting a politician that believes what that organization does. Again, a "pledge" just measures a politician's belief on a topic.
....besides, Pat, I want some of these politicians on record pledging to the extremes of the extreme....
Pat in Atl
You just don't get it do you? It's not blackmail to withhold donations to a politician for not believing in your principles. It's called politics and everybody plays the game including you. Call it a pledge, call it a campaign promise, call it whatever you want (except blackmail). It's the political system we have. In the end, the pledges and promoises will be broken after the politican wins the election.
jimspa:
Taking an Oath is FAR MORE than "symbolic" for any moral and ethical person who lives by a code of Honor and Loyalty.
It's obvious there is no honor in the GOP. They have to have them sign pledges because they lie so much. They run on one thing and do another. They ran on jobs and the economy and won. They then went after personal freedoms. Sad.
The GOP oath or pledge should be to the US citizens and the constition, not this.
MJL-3:
Grover Norquist and his foul jive is AGAINST our US Citizens, The Constitution and The Bill of Rights! I cannot believe his actions are legal...
Rather you've handed your political fate to the ideologues and done your country a great disservice.
.
Yep -- remember these????

yeah, both parties have been guilty of it, but my suspicion is that this is much more of a republican "thing" than democratic. Its bad either way.
Lib50. and that number is growing, also High number wants the rich taxed more
I just hope Bachmann continues to sign pledge after pledge. She has boxed herself into a corner and now, no matter how much she tries to backstep, it will haunt her.
MJL-3 - you are absolutely right. Even a high number of the GOP want the rich taxed more to help offset the deficit. Reality is beginning to sink in.

UnitedStates1776, great post.
Fanatics.
Crazy fanatics.
These pledges along with the t bag stains are sponsored by corporations and are a big afront to everyday americans.
Yep, that pretty much describes the Republican party. Could not get bin Laden, surrendered to North Vietnam. Courage is not in the GOP lexicon.
@Robert -- and the democrat party.

Ben
We saw it the first 7 times you posted it. Perhaps, they signed a pledge to keep social security intact because that is what the American people want.
Americans United was a special interest for labor. Same thing then in scoring political points before 2008 -- and it worked.
They are a little less forceful than the Norquist types.
More forceful than Labor who are Thuglike, Mafialike run organizations LMAO. That's too funny. Tea Partians are upholding their campaign promises.
ben, people who sign pledges are weaklings and stupid, no matter which party they're from. good enough?
funniest part is that politicians will do or say anything to get elected and once elected who says they'll actually do it?
Any pledge by any politician is wrong period, Republican or Democrat, these organizations they are pledging too do not represent all the American people but a special interest, therefor like a soldier they represent all Americans in their district or state not just the ones they agree with.
Ben - Tea Partiers are not upholding anything. They campaigned on more jobs yet not one of them has even remotely suggested any program to produce those jobs. The Tea Partiers are just another group of lying GOPers.

What is this--middle school? Pledges? They want soooo much to be popular they will do anything. Ridiculous.
It reminds me of the "Abstinence Pledge" in high school.

It is not only Norguist it is ALEC, very dangerous,
The GOP runs on small government, but their mission is anything but small government.
At least Hunsman didn't sign, but we will see,
Oh and Jim, Obama has NOTHING to FEAR
Instead of "statesmen" maybe we should call them "partiers". Yes, I intend the double meaning for those of you who get it.
Seriously? Who in their right mind wants to vote for anyone who marches to the demands of one interest group.
Remember these??

"I pledge allegence to the KOCHS to EXXON and the RICH, to all the whackos in the world who cannot find a nitch, I pledge to take the marriage vow and how slavery was good too, I pledge to bankrupt all of us cause that's what nutjobs do!"
Any questions?
No questions. You summed it up well.
Do you write their speeches??
Nice scarcasm in your post

— The Norquist Fuehrer Oath _

I strongly agree.
Pawlenty said it best:
"I prefer to choose my own words,"
In other words be his own person and not obey and serve a "Master."
Great...............At least we all know he's an incompetent imbecile on his own.............................
Rather than pledging their allegence to the special interests they all hold so near and dear, how about pledging to represent the interests of "WE THE PEOPLE" for a change.
'WE THE PEOPLE' don't have much money to throw at their campaigns.
Amen to that Einstien, you hit the nail on the head.
Yep. This thread #17 sums it up for me too. It's even got the teabag trolls stumped for a response. Good comments from all.
All the polls showed a generic Republican beating Harry Ried in the last election. How did that work out?
That's because Sharron Angle is about as "generic" as a bottle of crappy tasting soda ...................
which is also how "generic" the rest of the republican candidates are.
There are no "real" republicans left. Just a bunch of tea baggers

Sent you a message,
My newsvine is ALL screwed up. Posting twice
Sorry off topic, but this is nuts.
As is the Pledge

There are no "real" republicans left.
JOe
Fixed it , it was an air pocket in the electronic aether.

I pledge to disavow everything the founding fathers stood for, so help me GEORGE SOROS...
do you know what slander is?
Wrong G-man there vega. Only Grover Norquist has a pledge that every card carrying Republican has to sign in order to get access to the Republican financing system.
If I'm wrong, post a link to any pledge that George Soros has put out and said that Democrats must sign or they won't get his financial backing.
Funny, I don't remember Soros ever asking for a pledge...like Norquist does.
Sorry Vega, no democrat or independent is required or bullied into signing such ludicrous pledges. Tea party candidates and most republicans have the political backbone of shell fish. You can take a position, but you shouldn't have them forced on you.
Norquist was interviewed on CNN this weekend and came off looking like a buffoon. A complete empty suit.
Einstein - I'm not sure he was just LOOKING like a buffoon. I believe he erased all doubt that he actually IS a buffoon!
The GOP Pledge of Allegiance (Tea Party endorsed):
"I pledge allegiance, not to the flag, but to the un-elected Grover Norquist.
And to the Republic, whose back we stab:
False Patriotism
Under the guise of God
Indefensible
With Zealotry and Hypocrisy for all"
Well stated!
Like Pelosi, Reid, et. al. who signed the labor-backed Golden Promise pledge???
Ben - no such animal but why does it not surprised me that you made this up?
One trick pony there eh Ben?
I guess you feel pledges by Republicans are ok but not pledges by Democrats, since you have only acknowledged it is wrong for Democrats to sign this one pledge that you are spamming?
All these ultra-rightwing t-gopers have one thing in common: mental illness!
Lies, damn lies and statistics. This "pledging" is distracting and just short of lunacy.
Because if you sign your name on a piece of paper then you can't change your position?
What are the consequences of breaking these pledges aside from losing the financial backing of the originator?
It's a politician's job to make promises they never intend to keep. "You can fool...."
(Hint - it's not a word or ideal that is real popular IN THIS COUNTRY)
has to be something about nazis.
I'm thinking fascists in general, not nazis in particular.
Ian are you going to enlighten us as to the point you are trying to make?
bush-fascist/ism
Good one Ian, but the people that need to understand this still won't get it.
Fascism/TP'ers GOP
