@ Brian,.....IMO the establishment just wants Ron Paul to go away. I feel that many view him as a threat because he would effect an honest approach to resolving our country's problems. In saying, his methods may be contrary to what would benefit many powerful special interest groups represented by both sides. His stance on immigration being an exception, I think the man is brilliant. I'm not sure do to his advanced age how well he would hold up in the job of presidency, though.

Bachmann does not have a chance in hell of getting the nomination. She may have topped this straw poll, but it was only with 28% of the vote. As the field thins and the vote is not being split 12 ways the real contenders will become apparent. Perry and Romney are the two most likely candidates. I do not see Ron Paul as having any real chance because of his inconsistency and age. While I think that Romney would have the better chance of beating Obama, Perry is the one that is more likely to get the nomination. Romney will be hurt by the Massachusetts health care plan that is a lot like Obamacare and has been a major problem for the state. Many Republicans do not support this type of health care plan and this will cost Romney a lot of votes. In any case, there is still a long way to go before the nominee is determined and anything can happen between now and then.

The first runner up at a beauty contest is always relegated to a nobody and forgotten after the last pic on the stage where she is clinging to the soon to be announced winner. Consider Paul the first runner-up!

I find it interesting that most of you have missed the point of the results. All of the candidates with the most "Washington experience" got the least votes. It shows the distrust of the old guard and a wish for new blood. Even Herman Cain, who many people don't know, placed higher than Newt and Mitt. Clearly, the people want to fix the problems of govt. What about these candidates?

We shouldn't put too much stock in the results of the Iowa straw poll. There is a long road ahead for all these candidates. No one currently vying for the Republican nomination seems viable to me. Maybe there will be a dark horse candidate as yet unrevealed.

Bachmann won a straw pole in Ames Iowa. Great day for Democrats. Come on guys, you have to do better than Michele Bachmann if you want to win the White House as she is un-electable. There is no way in hell this woman will win the battle of the center where all elections are decided. The only piece of legislation she has been responsible for is to nationalize bigotry. I haven't seen someone that loves America as much as she does yet hates most Americans since George Wallace.

As an independent, I like the ideas of Ron Paul but feel he too won't be able to pose a serious threat. That leaves Mitt Romney and the newcomer Rick Perry as the only viable candidates to consider. I think Romney has the best chance of capturing votes from the most of us in the middle as Perry is a little bit too far right of center.

I'm really becoming disheartened with the American psyche. Many posters are complaining about Paul's age. We're trying to elect someone to run our country. Why would you want someone who is 20 years out of college, instead of someone who has had 50 years of experience outside of college? Paul has a wealth of life experience...he's been around to see ideas that have worked and ideas that have failed. He's witnessed changes throughout the entire global structure. We need someone with experience, not someone to win American Idol.

No one should be surprised by the results of the poll. Americans are tiring of big government policies from both sides of the aisle. Paul doesn't fit the mold of the gop establishment, so they are terrified of him. He wants to end the federal reserve and he wants to bring our troops home from across the globe. This scares the hell out of big government folks and large corporations getting the bailouts.

It's the Ames straw poll. The winner usually does not receive the nomination. So it hardly "represents the mood of the country". Unless you're a crazy liberal such as Gregory who wants it to be.

AtlasWillShrug is correct in his assessment about Ron Paul, and that will transcend onto ANY Tea party candidate. Tea Partyers don't care about the defense budget, which will take a big hit. They don't care for the war machine in general. They're hoping this "super-committee" fails, and the trigger gets pulled. Its exactly what they want, because there is no revenue involved in the trigger's mechanism.

Establishment GOP cares too much for defense funding to allow a Tea Party candidate to be nominated. And if that trigger gets pulled, they'll want a more establishment minded nominee to run against Obama, to have any hope of undoing the damage the trigger will cause.

Its not so much the "literal" substance of his comment, as it is the declaration that underlies it. In other words, Social Security isn't a "constitutional matter". So to call it "unconstitutional" is simply equally as disingenuous as calling it "a constitutional obligation".

I don't think Bachman is going to make it, though she is oh so loved by your radical, unthinking, angry 'right' winger. Perry is strong, given he didn't officially enter the straw poll. Palin is done before she started (good ridance). Ron Paul is an idealist and an outsider. He won't do well. Further, as an idealist he has no practical skill to negotiate or get anything realistic done.

You can be anti establishment. Right up until the point that you need the establishment to win. And by that point, you should be LEADING the establishment, not be led by it. Personally, I think Romney is still more electable than Perry if it comes down to the Presidency. But that doesn't mean Perry won't win either the party or the Presidential election.

Its funny how the Tea Party always go to the "afraid" line. I'm a Dem and I'm not afraid of any of any one of these people, because none of them will get elected. Bachmann, Perry and Paul have no chance because although they get the ultra-conservatives giddy with excitement, most independents wont go near them (they are the ones that really decide elections). Romney is the only one that stands a chance with independents, but with his mormon/pro-abortion/pro-socialized medicine past (and now his "corporations are people" debacle), he won't get the ultra-conservatives out in the masses that he would need.

However no one should be voted for or against based upon their religion. In a perfect world they'd keep their religious views to themselves and their religious place of worship - it has no place in politics, as Thomas Jefferson wrote so many times. What someone thinks is moral, amoral or immoral is for them to decide for THEMSELVES. No one else need follow those, they just need to follow the Law. Thats the problem with this country. People don't research sh!t anymore to get to the truth about the politicians they elect. Thats exactly why I brought it up myself.

I don't excuse him for everything. I hold him as equally accountable for waiting so long to take on more of a leadership role, as anyone else.

He HAS to leave the illusion that he can somehow unite this congress, far behind him. He needs to take his case DIRECTLY to the American people, as much as necessary to get something done. And he needs to do it in an open and honest, and thoroughly detailed manner, without regard for his re-election.

That "supercommittee"? That needs to be webcast and televised for ALL to see. The American people need to be FULLY engaged in this process. These 12 people are tasked with making decisions that will effect ALL of us for many years to come.

Alan, I've been a MIS. director for AC-Delco and AC-SparkPlug in Michigan. I know what leadership is (I've been extremely successful). I have the talent to judge EFFECTIVE leaders. I've had to make some very hard decisions in the roles I had. What 'hard' roles has our president made. Name one. Other than sending more troops to Afghanistan (and he stalled on that for months).

Mr. Obama does not demonstrate any of the qualities that a 'LEADER' has.

The decision to bail out the automakers (a bailout your particular stated industry benefited GREATLY from) was another. Think about it. Had he let them just die out, what other significant industry, so important to our economy throughout the last 100+ years, would we have left to take such visible pride in as a nation? I'd count that as another.

Leadership is much more than just plastering a banner reading "Mission Accomplished" onto an aircraft carrier, and calling it done. I have no doubts in Obama's ability to make tough choices. I do however, have serious doubts about his ability to display that leadership in the public eye. And I don't discount the real concern that the right's propaganda machine (not that the lefts is much better by any measure) would seize on that display as more than what it would truly be.

We need a special election to have a vote of Confidence for Congress.

If it is NAY? They all should go effective immediately.

Bush took to attacking Iraq through deceitful and manufactured means. This is FACT, and PROVEN history.

He was more focused on avenging the failure of his father in the Desert Storm debacle, and desperately seeking to exonerate him. Bush's actions are indefensible. Iraq was of NO consequence or threat to America's national security. He USED the action of bin Laden as an excuse to attack Iraq for NO credible reason. I never thought for one second it was a revenge attack. Had that been so, then he would have packed up and left after declaring victory. Rumsfeld and Cheneys war was about pilfering the american people and funneling the money, laundering in a sense, through Blackwater and Halliburton. Mr. Bush's was about getting out from under his father's shadow and creating a demand on natural resources in an attempt to put pressure on the legislators via the people to open up those national reserves in Alaska for exploration and drilling to ease the demand he knew the war would put on the cost of fuel oils and at the pump. He succeeded in a sense and that is where Sarah Palin came into the picture.

That really isn't accurate. What about all the Kurds in Northern Iraq killed before the war because of nerve agents deployed by Saddam, even before the war started? Chemical and biological weapon are considered 'weapons of mass destruction'. Check your history. Just because they weren't nuclear weapons doesn't mean they were not weapons of mass destruction.

After their destruction, the Inspectors spent more than two years searching and found absolutely nothing and were driven out of Iraq when Saddam said the United states was road mapping his country for war. History proved him correct.

I live in Texas. Gov. Perry has done a spectacular job as Governor. The state has a 'rainy-day' fund in the billions. Jobs are plentiful for the unemployed and the business climate is great. No state income tax and Texas is a'right to work' state. Where do you live?

Alan - I think the 'credentials' insertion is meant to be proof of being a 'True American' - a Tea Party tactic. True Americans generally live in the heartland - the truest Americans live on farms and are ready to shoot all the black people once their welfare runs out and they get hungry and are found eating an ear of corn on their true American corn field.

Emotions run high - they rightfully mourn our lost troops - but wouldn't think of not feeding the military-industrial complex. Politics is likewise an emotional issue - not a conceptual one to think about.

That said, I consider them fellow patriots in need of education. If there is one single issue burning in the hearts of all Americans it is the growing realization of UNFAIRNESS becoming the norm. The real authors of this state of affairs love the division and will use it to their benefit. That happened in Germany in the early '30s.

When Bush/Cheney had prisoners tortured, I knew America was done. That's the day things changed for me - it was like being hit in the gut - my family goes back to fighting the Revolutionary War - we all got hit in the gut by the scum pretending to be patriots. Thanks for the 'somewhat' civil reply. In Texas, the counties of the state mandate the educational systems, NOT state government (the state only sets standards). Yes, there are problems and difficulties in SOME of our school systems. Illegal immigration is a BIG problem here (when the illegals come to school, they don't speak English). It's difficult to understand,- if you don't live here.

I don't know where you live, but, I know probably that (your) state school system could be better than it is today. Each state is doing the best with what they have. I was fortunate enough to go to private schools most of my life.

Did you not notice where I mentioned (in detail actually) that I did live there? And when my kids went to Stafford Middle School, I had to show their birth certificates AND Social Security cards, as well as proof of address when I registered them.

But that you would think it acceptable to slash education funding for the reason you stated, as opposed to cutting off the tax breaks to the wealthiest Texans is simply astounding. Not to mention, selfish and pitiful.

Leiya - here is an article on the voucher program in Washington DC. This is same program that GOP leaders push to continue as part of the budget deal in April (see Budget Deal Fuels School Voucher).

Both articles seem to imply that the school voucher programs favor Catholic schools since the Catholic schools are the only private schools which are close to being affordable to most Americans who as Persevere said do not even have 1,000 in bank account each year. The articles suggest that the Catholic school charge a lower tuition than the actual education cost. The Catholic schools run the schools as a loss business because the schools are an opportunity to teach the younger generation to become good Catholics that put money into the collection plate each week. Thus the education of the students in the skills required to compete in the business, science, and math are secondary to converting the child into a good Catholic in a Catholic school.

Since I am a Protestant Christian, I do not want my child to be taught to be a good Catholic. Also, I am sure there are Jewish people who do not want their children to be taught to be good Catholics either. So I prefer to fund a public school which prioritizes math, science, language, creativity, ... the skills my child will need to compete in life. Religious and moral teaching are my responsibility not the schools. This is why I prefer properly funding public education over school voucher programs.

If we put him back in office and let him spend as he'd like, he will have take national debt from about 10 trillion to about 22 trillion. Actually, what I would welcome is another large industry boom to drag us out of this mess like Clinton had during most of his presidency - that also just happened to end abruptly during Bush's first year - the dotcom bubble. The "Recession", too, cannot be laid at Obama's feet. This one was birthed in 2007, long before he was elected. And, as far as the ever expanding deficit, we must also look to his predecessor for the root of many of those expenditures. Programs, largely military in nature, begun under Bush II, continue long after his departure. The cost of maintaining those programs, while having seen some minor cuts, still continue to sap billions from the nations coffers.

Bachmann only won because she paid for 4000 tickets. She only got 800 more votes than that. She bought her win. Ron Paul never bought one ticket and came in close 2nd.

New Hampshire does have the first primaries. Iowa uses caucases, which occur slightly earlier. Caucases start at the township level, with party meetings to decide who to support (any party member can come and vote at that level), and offering "planks" to the party platform.....then elects representatives to the county level, where the same process occurs....then to the state level meetings. It is a very interesting process that gets people involved at the community level, not just with a vote, but with discussions and input. I wish I still lived there to participate in the process.

The straw pole really means nothing except to weed out losers.....nothing official about it. I'm not sure that state fair goers are a real cross section of the population. Most people I know who were involved in politics never attended the fair. It seems the media has made it what it is today. As far as Michelle Bachman winning.......I think it has more to do with the fact she is an Iowa native than anything else.

filibuster of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, Republican Dirksen took to the Senate
floor and exclaimed "The time has come for equality of opportunity in sharing in
government, in education, and in employment. It will not be stayed or denied. It

speech). Sadly, Democrats and revisionist historians have all but forgotten
(and intentionally so) that it was Republican Dirksen, not the divided
Democrats, who made the Civil Rights Act a reality. Dirksen also broke the
Democrat filibuster of the 1957 Civil Rights Act that was signed by Republican
President Eisenhower.

Outside of Congress, the three most notorious opponents of school integration
were all Democrats:
- Orval Faubus, Democrat Governor of Arkansas and
one of Bill Clinton's political heroes
- George Wallace, Democrat
Governor of Alabama
- Lester Maddox, Democrat Governor of Georgia

The most famous of the school desegregation standoffs involved Governor
Faubus. Democrat Faubus used police and state forces to block the integration of
a high school in Little Rock, Arkansas. The standoff was settled and the school
was integrated only after the intervention of Republican President Dwight D.
Eisenhower.

Even the Democrat Party organization resisted integration and refused to
allow minority participation for decades. Exclusion of minorities was the
general rule of the Democrat Party of many states for decades, especially in
Texas. This racist policy reached its peak under the New Deal in the
southern and western states, often known as the New Deal Coalition region of
FDR. The Supreme Court in Nixon v. Herndon declared the practice of
"white primaries" unconstitutional in 1927 after states had passed laws barring
Blacks from participating in Democrat primaries. But the Democrat Parties did
not yield to the Court’s order. After Nixon v. Herndon, Democrats simply
made rules within the party's individual executive committees to bar minorities
from participating, which were struck down in Nixon v. Condon in 1932.
The Democrats, in typical racist fashion, responded by using state parties to
pass rules barring blacks from participation. This decision was upheld in
Grovey v. Townsend, which was not overturned until 1944 by Smith v.
Allwright. The Texas Democrats responded with their usual ploys and turned
to what was known as the "Jaybird system" which used private Democrat clubs to
hold white-only votes on a slate of candidates, which were then transferred to
the Democrat party itself and put on their primary ballot as the only choices.
Terry v. Adams overturned the Jaybird system, prompting the Democrats to
institute blocks of unit rule voting procedures as well as the infamous literacy
tests and other Jim Crow regulations to specifically block minorities from
participating in their primaries. In the end, it took 4 direct Supreme Court
orders to end the Democrat's "white primary" system, and after that it took
countless additional orders, several acts of Congress, and a constitutional
amendment to tear down the Jim Crow codes that preserved the Democrat's white
primary for decades beyond the final Supreme Court order ruling it officially
unconstitutional.

Hispanics in South Texas were treated especially poorly by the Democrat
Party, which relied heavily on a system of political bosses to coerce and
intimidate Hispanics into voting for Democrat primary candidates of choice.
Though coercion is illegal, this system, known as the Patron system, is still in
use to this day by local Democrat parties in some heavy Hispanic communities of
the southwest.

I know you want to look at anything and make it into something to use for your side. I get it, your the minority you have to make noise and news to be in the forefront. But in the 5 blocks around my house there are approx 213 children ages newborn to 18 (then they are counted as adults) Of the approx. 74 homes I know of 4 who are populated with a traditional family. Where the father of the children is married to the woman in the home. The rest are multi fathered households of 2 to 6 children sometimes with 3 of 4 fathers per family! So in effect if you look at purely traditional family units! Some people might see the history of that family unit as better at times then it is today. Taken with a myopic view that is!

Whether she said it or not. It is factual. And no, jackasses I don't support slavery. But the fact remains that government programs have destroyed the black family. All you have to do is look at the stats of single-parent homes for the black community; 74% of black children being raised in single-parent homes. Blacks are 9 times as likely to be killed by firearms than whites. Blacks are more likely to live in poverty. Blacks have lower education levels. The list goes on and on.

Who's to blame? The race or government intervention and forced dependence on government subsidies. My money goes on government intervention. Once the government determines "victim status" the results are usually poor and the unintended consequences are more damaging than leaving things alone.

So maybe Bachman said it; at least she has the courage to speak out against government programs that have failed to help those that were intended. It's not racist, it's truth.

This country is in FAR better shape than it was when Obama first took office. The economy had been hemorrhaging jobs for eight years. Now, it is adding them. The housing market was in a burst bubble. Financial markets had just collapsed. We are coming out of a recession. It was Obama that saved us from a deep depression. Give credit where it is due.

.......Good grief Charlie Brown, where did you get that, from Beck or Limbaugh? Feudal lords gave NOTHING away to the serfs. They permitted the serfs to live on and work the lord's land. The serf's were allowed to retain a small percentage of what they produced to sustain themselves, the rest went to the lord. Even the animal life on the land belonged to the lords. If a serf went out and killed a deer or wild boar for food, he ran the risk of arrest and death. Not a great arrangement for the serfs, but it was the only way for them to survive in that system, loyalty had nothing to do with it.

With the Middle Class disappearing, and their wealth ending up in the hands of the upper 3% in this country, as has been documented by economists and financial analysts over the last 20-25 years, how long will it take for us to go back to those wonderful times? Yes, the wealthy pay a lot of taxes, but that's because they have a lot of money, it's not rocket science. Double my income and I won't complain about more taxes. Unless the top marginal rate hits 100%, and it's not even close at 35% (was 90% under Ike, a good Republican), then I still come out ahead. By the way, my wife's and my combined pay is under 6 figures, yet our Federal income tax liability is 5 figures, so justify to me why the TP doesn't want Exxon-Mobile, Boeing or GE to pay a penny on billions in profit, or why hedge fund managers pay only a marginal rate of 15%, when my wife and I are in the 25% marginal rate. As seen in the state of Wisconson the (fief - Democrats) went out in droves to protect the (Lord-Public Unions) from lossing thier power. In this case Public Unions negotiated contracts with Candidates the one that gave them the best deal they poured millions of dollars to get them elected (commendation ceremony) Once the Candidate got elected they were in a Feudal Relationship with agreed-upon mutual obligations to one another.
