The House "leadership" just doesn't get it, it wasn't the 'vote' that was embarrassing it was the legislation they had proposed!

If they are looking to 'cut' something they just need to keep in mind that when the big oil executives testified before Congress they stated that:

1- We didn't ask for any tax break

2- We don't need the Bush tax break

3- Congress is more than welcome to take it back

So cut the damn tax break that you gave big oil and use those revenues to fund disaster relief and let's move on!!!

The bills passed by the house are not jobs bills. They include repealing regulations on clean air and water, or they speed the way for more drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.

If you knew a thing or two what the GOTPers were proposing to cut were NOT subsidies but a LOAN program to help manufacturers gear up more quickly for the cars they are in fact selling, manufacturing that is already creating jobs and that holds a real potential for creating more jobs.

As far as the tax breaks given to big oil, tha is in fact a subsidy and again one they said they didn't even need and invited congress to take it back and it happens to be about $4.5 billion a year which would provide revenues to pay for disaster recovery.

I know that the cuts they want are a LOAN program. I am against the government getting into private industry. If those little pieces of crap cars were really wanted they could stand on their own. Yes the car companies are selling a few of them but not very many. As far as tax breaks for big oil, I don't think they get much more in the way of incentives than most other industries. Oil companies are given incentives to produce products that we Americans need. I don't see a problem with that. Oil companies employ many Americans and add plenty to the tax coffers. We should thank them not demonize them. If the progressives keep up their demonization of companies and the rich they may end up all alone and broke someday.

Tell me how 9%+ unemployed another approximately 6%+ that have fallen off the pay rolls, and the 20% underemployed people can affort $25,000 + for the pieces of garabage being pushed as fuel efficient or the even more expensive electric cars. That is after subsidies. I worked out the numbers on the cheapest plug in hybrid on the market (Chevy Volt) and between battery replacements, cost of electric, and $4.00 a gallon of gas compared to a regular economy Kia and in 25 years you will recoupe your money for buying the plug in Hybrid. Can you imagine if you bought a more expensive one. Taking gas to $5.00 a gallon along with increased costs for clean energy such as wind farms and solar fields and the payback stays the same. How many people drive a car for 10 years let alone 25 before trading it in. Darn I forgot to calculate in repair bills on older more computer based cars.

It would be cheaper to build a kit car with a 60's VW engine and drive it for 25 years, at least anyone with a sense of mechanics could fix it.

Drilling for more oil isn't going to help us in the long run. It takes almost 10 years to get an oz. of oil out of the ground (yes, here in Texas, back in 2009, the press was all atwitter about the new oil well that had just opened up production after taking over 9 years to be completed). In 10 years, how much further along the road could we be to being independent from fossil fuels if the subsidies we use for oil were used for alternative fuels/energy? Also consider that the 5 largest oil comapnies have cut jobs (over 11,000) the last 5 years running, while making record profits, so they aren't actually creating jobs. Just FYI.

Actually, 40,000 times 100 jobs is 4,000,000 jobs. No wonder we are never going to get out of the mess this country is in. Our schools can't even produce people who can do BASIC MATH anymore. Or is it people who intentionally do the math wrong to try to prove thier misguided point?

And 10 years ago people were saying "but it will take ten years to get online". We use oil for MUCH more than just gas. Actually with technology now it takes half that time or less.

I would have more sympathy for the GOP Joemike, if they would been willing to compromise with Obama more in the debt ceiling crisis. Now they are going to have to make the concessions and not the Democrats. For the last 2 and a half years everything the GOP wanted it got, with the exception of HCR. We lost several rigs in the gulf because of the drilling moratorium (that even the experts in the final report didn't recommend) and lost an estimated 19000 jobs on the coast. There are a lot of support jobs and businesses that branch out to support them.

Shell was shut down by the epa because of 1 ice breaker emissions. How many jobs did that cost?

EPA proposing emissions standards that would shut down numerous factories and concrete companies. Even unions opposing this.

BO suing i believe it is 17 banks. Yes, our govt gives them money and then sues them. I guess they pay fines with our tax money???? That should encourage them to hire.

He want to take another 5% or so from businesses in taxes. How is this going to make me hire when come to me as a govt demanding more money. I would cut my spending, capital expenditures, job hours or jobs period if i give up another 5%. That should help the economy.

He wants the "Buffett's" to pay more. That would mean cap gains increases but he won't put a number on what cap gain rate he wants. He won't because the stock market would dive if he said 30% cap gains.

Another little goddie in his jobs plan (in part 3) allows an unemployed person to sue if he/she doesn't get the job and feels discriminated against. And get legal costs if they win. That should encourage people to hire.

And businesses have no idea on employee costs with taxes and health care costs.

10% of employers plan to stop policies with another 20% leaning that way (from NFIB) when obamacare starts. Around half of the states you can no longer get child only policies, one of the few things in effect from obamacare.

14+ trillion dollar dept, 40 Cents of every dollar the Fed spends is borrowed, and the U.S.'s credit rating has been downgraded for the first time in history. The dems wont pass the bill because it Cuts 1.5 billion from a loan program for E cars and is 3 billion less than what the Senate Democrats want to spend on disaster relief which would be 4 Billion more in spending added to our dept.

ANYONE in Congress can author and present a bill. Legislation Constitutionally begins in Congress. In the House ANY member, majority or minority, can introduce a Bill, it is dropped in a box called a hopper. In the Senate, after being recognized by the presiding officer and announcing the bill's introduction, ANY member can introduce a Bill.

However, Bills dealing with appropriations (money) can ONLY originate from the House. Article 1, Section 7 restricts this. The Bill is labeled and then goes to committee for study. After study, hearings or if needed sending the Bill to a subcommittee, it is voted on. Then it is reported to the floor of the Senate or House and calendared for action. Debate is given and vote to either pass it or reject it. Most Bills never pass committee. Once a Bill passes it must be exactly worded and setup. If not, a conference committee is created to finalize the wording. It then returns to both Houses for a revote. The Bill is then sent to the president. He can sign it, veto it or do nothing (this is called a pocket veto if Congress is not in session for 10 days). You or I can offer legislation. We can't introduce it. It has to go through a member of Congress. The president can ALSO offer legislation but he CAN'T introduce it. It must go through a member of Congress also. But the president must begin the budgetary process.

DEBATE IS GIVEN! This means the Senate is responsible to debate and AMEND the Bill and send it back to the House.

The democrats didn't shove Obamacare down anyone's throat. That was not the bill that most democrats in congress wanted. It was not the bill that the House originally passed. It was not the bill that President Obama originally wanted.

"Obamacare" was the "at-least-it's-better-than-nothing" bill that the democrats had to settle for because the republicans all joined hands and filibustered to make sure that a much better bill couldn't come up for a vote. The sad irony is that many of these republicans are the same ones that were just oh-so-offended when democrats filibustered some of Bush's court nominees.

Eric - Oil and natural gas industries require a lot of manpower. My husband works for a natural gas support company. The job requires wireline personnel, fracking crews, cement crews, drivers, plus dozens of support personnel to maintain machinery. Not to mention all the extra jobs at the support facilities that any basic company requires: Human Resources, IT Support, Warehousing, etc. Not to mention the jobs that would be created to build these facilities.

Our state makes so much money on the taxes they charge these oil companies that we don't have a state income tax. More money in my pocket.

You may be against big oil and natural gas. But in reality, they create a lot of jobs, and a lot of high paying jobs. In our town of 22,000 people, the median income is $68,000/yr.

Drilling for more oil isn't going to help us in the long run. It takes almost 10 years to get an oz. of oil out of the ground (yes, here in Texas, back in 2009, the press was all atwitter about the new oil well that had just opened up production after taking over 9 years to be completed). In 10 years, how much further along the road could we be to being independent from fossil fuels if the subsidies we use for oil were used for alternative fuels/energy? Also consider that the 5 largest oil comapnies have cut jobs (over 11,000) the last 5 years running, while making record profits, so they aren't actually creating jobs. Just FYI.

The delay you may see is between land / areas being leased out and actually being drilled. And those delays can get extensive if people start fighting against extraction in shale areas, but in "normal" areas there is truthfully very little delay unless BOEMRE drags it's behind.

Chrysler was not sold to foreign country. Fiat owns approx 35% of the share. UAW owns around 55%. The rest is divided up between the previous creditors and US Gov. The previous creditors asked for 100% of their investment durig the Chrysler BK proceeding... Like most BK proceeding, it is nearly NEVER that creditor receive 100% of their credit (because otherwise the company would have paid them out already). In most cases it is near 10-25%. The Whitehouse injected and turned down the offer to pay 50cents on a dollar, because if BK actually goes through, FIAT would have owned 100%, stripped the company down to nothing (because Chrysler had no major assets). The creditors would had been paided 10cents on a dollar! Instead a compromised was struck. UAW will have a hand in their future by leveraging their pension into the future of their company, Fiat can only own 35%. The rest of the creditors can get 29cents on a dollar or a % in a newly formed Chrysler. The 1.5Billion is a fictious figure, that never existed other than a write off. As a tax payer I do not appreciate the CREDITORS who were trying to pressure the WhiteHouse using the TARP (tax payer) money to pay out themselves out (much like the Financial Firms during the GW Bush term). Most people don't know how much it costs to produce gas. All they see is the raw profit numbers in the media. Yes, BP earned billions last year, but how much did they spend to earn that? The reality is that oil company profits, as a percentage of investment, are quite low, just 2-4%. That means you spend $100 to earn back $102-$104. Then the media blazes on about how you earned a profit of $2-$4 while the average group, who only has 10 cents, earns back 12 cents (20%).

I think someone should explain the concept of 'profit' to you. Profit is the money you make AFTER you take into account all your expenses. Profit is NOT the money you make gross from which you take your costs. Stop lying to yourself and folks on here. Looks like obamas real plan is not a fair, balanced or even one of sharing but rather one of only "vote buying" of the 98% of voters making less than $250,000 in taxable incoome.

The internet has numerous links telling us what the bush tax cuts have cost America in lost revenue over ten years. Even obama puts the top 2% as having cost the economy about $800 billion over ten years, now he also wants to invoke a type of "buffet rule" whatever that may realistically entail?

Forbes recently listed the top 10 wealthiest US citezens and within that also made mention that if the assets of the top 400 wealthiest individuals were liquidated and given to the treasury that it would only amount to about $1 trillion. This essentially means that the top 400 will only have the salaries paid to them by the companies they represent, No longer would they have any capital gains, interest income or real estate holdings, just a salary.

Add this "one shot" revenue to the treasury with the $80 billion annual revenue from the other 2%ers we get $1.08 trillion the first year and $720 billion over the next 9 years in prijected increased revenue. $1.8 trillion over ten years is just over the amount the super commision has been charged in creating budgetary cuts over thenext ten years. Even by obama math this won't be enough to lower our long term debt.

What many 98%ers haven't realized yet is that the obama (bush) tax cuts when eliminated for everyone amounts to an estimated increase of around $3.5 trillion over 10 years give or take a hundred billion. or so. That is just in projected revenue increases over ten years. This total is nearly nearly 3x of what obama expects to 2 5 to pay and nearly double theamount if we liquidated the assets of the top 400 wage earners in the US.

Cheney once commented on "deficits don't matter" and by old school politics and spending (whether democrat or republican) he was right and our rapidly expanding federal debt (currently over $14 trillion) proves it. The problem is in how we pay it down into something more realistic to manage. Our interest payment on our current debt is astounding, but realize this, interest rates are not likely to stay low forever.

While the tea party has been beating us over our heads to be more fiscally responsible and S&P has downgraded us with a AA- rating and negative outlook how soon will fitch and moody's follow suit?

Obama is acting like the politicians of old thinking that "deficits don't matter" If he wins re-election in 2012 how soon does he look at that $3.5 trillion over ten years as a means to eliminate all of his tax cuts so that he can spend it like a drunken sailor spending OPM? After all we hear a lot from him about raising taxes, but we have yet to see anything from him or the senate on program spending cuts. Why should he care? He is constitutionly limited to two terms and we know he likes to spend and raise taxes.

I'd hate to set the precedent that federal disaster aid is based on which party is in office and how the disaster area voted. On the other hand, I see nothing wrong with asking Perry, Paul and their rugged individualist constituents to walk the walk by withdrawing their requests for disaster relief funds. My guess is that it will not happen. In fact, I remember the hypocrite in chief complaining recently that Texas had 9,000 wild fires and the Feds only helped them with 25 of them. He did leave out that those 25 were the only ones they filed for help on, but what the hell; he was totally correct.

In another article on MSNBC Disaster Bill Fails in Republican-led House it was noted that the "looming shortage has been apparent for months, and the Obama White House was slow to request additional money."

Something that people like Eric seem to forget is that if tax dollars are being paid into the Federal Government, from the states, then the government can not pick and choose which states receive these benefits. This is exactly why the "Corn Husker Kickback" had to be immediately expunged from ObamaCare. Keep in mind that the Democrats made a very big deal about their passing "pay go". That was something that they bragged about changing the rules because Republicans were wasting so much money. Now the Republicans want to pay for disaster relief with money that is going to be wasted on the auto industry and the dems cry foul?

The Democrats didn't WANT the electric car loan funds in this bill...it's an existing program that provides thousands of jobs and the GOP wants to CUT the funding to transfer the funding to FEMA. If the car loan funding isn't cut, they won't fund FEMA.

So the tradeoff as it exists now is people in the recovering auto industry losing their jobs to provide disaster assistance to the people affected by hurricanes & tornados...which maes Cantor a liar when he claimed there would not be cuts required to pay for disaster relief after he did say disaster relief would only come with cuts to existing programs.

He and much of the GOP/TP love to speak in neutral terms like "cutting a program" so you don't know they are really cutting technology jobs in well paid occupations. They NEED to keep cutting government jobs and jobs that are supported with loan programs like this auto program and small business lending because they NEED to keep the recovery at zero job growth. If they fund disaster relief and put carpenters and construction crews to work, they NEED to cut another industry to offset the increase in employment.

Also, banks were bailed out and are now sitting on record cash piles from the people that bailed them out. B of A only markets a small fraction of their foreclosed houses, refuses to deal, and has set out to make 100k on each foreclosure. You ask why? If they were not bailed out, they would have had to sell off assets at low prices and get all these foreclosures off the market.

China is increasing their price of labour and companies still wonder if there is return by coming back to America, many siting the expensive price to do business, and relocation. I'd disagree completely on the qualification aspect. I have plenty of friends in their late 20's with college degrees from top universities who are struggling to find jobs. A friend that went to Harvard, has a degree in economics applied at 60 places before he got a job. I have a MBA and JD, i've been stuck doing private taxes for the last year to pay loans. I've applied at different places to get these responses (btw i'm in CA); 1) you're to qualified for our need at the moment. 2) you're not qualified enough for our need at the moment. 3) what do you mean you do not speak spanish? Most of America is sick of the spending. How is cutting spending being selfish? I do wish that progresssives would leave. They will be leaving their government offices after next years election but it may be too late.

The selfish behavior is refusing to close tax loopholes, special privileges for the indolent wealthy, and corporate subsidies, and demanding that the American people give up education, health care, and other public services so they can lord it over the American people.

Republicans are to be applauded for bringing the issue of the national debt to the public's attention. They even threatened to risk throwing the country into default over raising the debt ceiling limit and the pause for the thought cost us a downgrade in our rating.

This must indeed be a serious, national issue. So...then when both parties sat down to negotiate ways to lower the debt...Republicans said, "we have a spending problem; we don't have a revenue problem." Oh? According to whom?

OK...then I think we can wait to resolve this national security problem until Republicans are willing to put EVERYTHING on the negotiating table. And, funny thing, the polls show that about two-thirds of American voters feel the same way, in that as part of the debt problem, they would like to see tax increases on the wealthy AHEAD of cuts in their social security or medeicare benefits.

P.S. The Bush tax cuts were based on projected SURPLUSES not deficits. That's why they were made temporary...so they could expire if the surpluses didn't happen. They didn't happen. When they didn't happen...largely because of the dot.com recession, 9/11 and the wars that followed, they should have been repealed.

Instead, the Bush Administration decided to "gamble" on getting an economic lift, in employment and GDP, from the housing bubble. If the wars had gone AS PROJECTED ORIGINALLY, it might have worked. They didn't...and the bubble blew-up.

Our big banks with trillions in assets have been getting billions in 0% loans to play the market. I hear no conservatives complain about this gigantic welfare for the rich.
