I'm not surprised that she is not running, but I am surprised to see how many people seem to think that the only reason one would choose any path is money. But, you forgot to include the $787 billion, $50 billion, $26 billion, etc. that came afterwards. thanks for the reply and the thoughful response. I agree with most of your sentiments but also I think that there was some success in the stimuli. First wall street hasn't collapsed along with everyone's savings, not that I relish saying nice things about wall st. and the auto industries haven't collapsed and have in fact returned some of the money borrowed. Additionally they have made some improvements and look to be profitable in the future. This includes making inroads to selling our products in China by becoming partners in a factory to produce over 2 million vehicles to sell in China.

Image the new jobs bill being voted on and agreed to 10 years ago..... that mandated spending the 3 trillion on infrastructure here in the US instead of the two wars in some backwater countries. I imagine there would have been jobs for everyone and a country that looked totally remodeled. Wish I had a time machine............:>)

Neither of you see it completely through to conclusion. First the wars have shown no direct benefit because there is no benefit to our national interests in either country. Second the first round of Obama's stimulus hasn't bore out much success other than being just enough to stop us from sliding any further. We now know things about the recession that we did not know then, that it was a great deal worse than we thought it was at the time. In other words if it had been larger we would have seen things improve.

However the improvement would and could only be short lived, because ultimately the underlying issues of what is wrong with our economy stems from our trade policies. You can create infrastructure jobs until you are blue in the face and that will be the only result a short lived moment of prosperity. The historical model of infrastructure spending to stimulate slow economic times is gone, it is a puzzle missing pieces and the pieces missing are a strong manufacturing sector.

I don't disagree with you on the wars, other than Afghanistan which should have been the sole focus. And that while being arguably necessary at the time, has been bungled from day one and now has become a monstrosity of our own making because of inept leadership and corruptness.

Corruption is so endemic and cultural in Afghanistan that if we have illusions that we are going to leave when a truly stable and honest government is in place, we'll be there when everyone today has elderly grandchildren. I think that even in the royal days it was recognized that the king's authority was mostly in a 50-mile or so ring around Kabul, and that the countryside was ruled by the local strongment.

It was mishandled, and the stuff that did go to the appropriate places actually is believed to have helped some - saved some 2 million jobs and helped mitigate the spiraling unemployment rates at that time (factcheck.org). The GDP is recovering, very very slowly, but still recovering.

I could careless if we agree on politics, most people don't. I'm beyond tired of the same old back and forths on all of this though. I'm more liberal than conservative, I voted for Obama but think he has shown weak leadership, and I believe most of Congress to be for sale and ineffective. You can have all your cheesy "obyema" type names, that isn't productive. You can even argue that Obama "didn't have a real job," ignoring that he was a member of Congress (which I wouldn't even say anything, reference above).

Fact of the matter is that the problems within our government run much deeper than Republican or Democrat, and rambling on about who did or didn't do what while they are in power isn't going to change that. The system is broken. Well-meaning politicians get clogged up by corruption and lobbyists. The most reasonable of Congressmen, on either side of the isle, has to play games to get anything done. On and on.

I'm for campaign finance reform, congressional term limits, and lobbyist reforms. Until those three things happen, I really don't care about the BS arguments. The whole thing is publicity anyway. Most of the names and generalizations you hear (Death Panels! Socialists! Obamacare!) go directly back to a political strategist or publicist. Your anger isn't genuine, it was planned by someone else who sorted out "Oh, this will get them going!"
