I'm tired of the campaign speeches. What I want to see is action and a real attempt at bipartisanship. Sorry, saying I want to be bipartisan and attacking the "other party" 30 seconds later is not an attempt at bipartisanship.

There are areas for agreement if someone would step up to the plate and be a statesman instead of a politician. As president, Obama is in the best position to be the statesman I'm looking for, but unfortunately he seems to be too busy being just another politician.

I'm going to guess that the private jet owners creates more jobs than Obama. A jet needs pilots and maintenance which are well paying jobs. Once the jet owner arrives at the destination, he/she will need fuel, transportation, food, lodging, and entertainment which provides more jobs. These flights most likely support a business endeavour which also is a source of jobs. The private jet owner doesn't cost me anything. Seems like a better deal than Obama's job bills which cost me a lot of money and don't create much in the way of real jobs. Instead of adding more taxes to anybody, let's cut off the foreign aid to everybody.

The average person on Obamacare will do better in terms of cost than normal health insurance, which rises 30% per year. I know. I pay close to $5k a year for my four employees and they don't get the best insurance.

And companies ARE adding jobs, but the government is slashing employment, causing the employment numbers to go up. Private business cannot and won't increase jobs at the same rate government slashes jobs.

The jobs bill will help curb government reductions and help employers keep employees.

I agree that we're in a "no win" here, but debt is the less of two evils. An economic downturn would gut our economy even worse.

Fact is, our president is nothing more than Bush with a different political backing. His administration has been a failure since "Day 1." This whole fair share thing is nothing more than growing the same crop on the same piece of land year after year without treating the land every planting season. Eventually you will turn the land into a wasteland and nothing will grow. We are seeing that dead land start to expand right now. This latest "stimulus" from our POTUS will do nothing to save this economy. He needs to learn to let the chips finally fall so that when the ball stops, we can start rebuilding again.

The super rich paid $758 in taxes on that $3267. What exactly would you like them to pay? What is their "fair share"? It is this constant reference by the democratic party to "fair share" that constitutes the waging of class warfare. The implication is that the rich are engaging in illegal activities to reduce their tax burden while they in fact, pay most of the taxes paid in the country. If the President did not want to engage in class warfare his message would be something like:

"We appreciate the tax burden paid by those who are most fortunate in our society. We acknowledge that they already pay most of the taxes collected in our society but these perilous and difficult economic times require that we ask more of those with the highest income."

The President's message however is actually:

"The rich pay no taxes and we must force them to pay their fair share because they are ripping the rest of us off. Anyone that makes more than $200,000 a year is a piece of bottom feeding scum whom we must all hate."

He is playing a political game target to cause friction and dissention between people of different economic classes. Like it or not, that is class warfare.

WELL, GLORY HALELLUJAH! LET'S GO TO VEGAS! that is ludicrous. but, we knew we wouldn't get anything else and we needed to protect our medical benefits, so we gave in.

I looked at the new health care law just after it was passed and determined, while it did not go as far as I would have liked, it will be much better for both my employee's and myself over what we have now. Too, as you say, all the mouthiness over the debt and threatened government reductions has been the primary cause of all the uncertainness which has caused business to falter. I really hope the jobs bill passes, though I wish it was much larger. Like you, I get a kick out of all the psuedo business experts who post on this forum. How does anyone expect to pay down debt unless revenue is adequate to do so? 1. The last stimulus didn't work......

What actually made it to the projects worked, but what didn't was largely due to the mismanagement and/or redirecting of funds by the states. But the "increase consumer confidence" part of it didn't work due to the 24/7 negativity spewed by our right wing "American supporting (not)" Obama haters.

2. ....the green jobs spending didn't work......

Still working... again, needs support, not demonizing, from the "other half" of the pundits.

Very short sighted and you miss the point altogether. Stimulus is meant to help keep companies alive until the economy DOES return AND to give consumers confidence that someone has their backs. At this point, the funds have run out, federal, state, county, and local governments are cutting jobs to the extreme, and congressional trickery has sucked all wind out of any confidence we had left. So, yes, it didn't work as well as it could have.

4. ....we've got to control our spending and give Americans more of their earned money to use as they see fit, to prop up the economy by paying their bills and spending on the things they need.

Yes to controlling our spending, but NOT with extreme cuts to jobs and continuous talk of cutting Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Unemployment benefits, and anything else that might make normal consumers more confident. Taxes are the lowest they've been in recent history, so we ARE helping the middle class as much as possible. The payroll tax proposal helps both the employees and the employers as well.

5. Americans need to band together and bring this country out of our problems with cooperation. No race issues, no wealth envy, just work together and we'll get through this.

The right has had it's chance to "work together" for over three years now and hasn't lifted a damn finger towards your so-called "cooperation". So that line smells to high heaven of hypocrisy and BS. The GOP or Tea Party or what ever name they are calling themselves today are blocking/obstructing anything that might improve the economy or return workers to work in the failing hope that re-writing history might give them a snowballs chance in Hades of electing one of their Presidential candidates.

The frustration you see in McConnell’s, and Boehner face is that they know they are sacrificing their political careers for nothing, because their parties Presidential candidates are unelectable in a fair fight, much less against an elected incumbent.

The top 1% of the country owns a greater concentration of wealth than at any other point in U.S. history -- yes, the percentage has passed the time just before the 1929 recession. Since 1965, the wealthy have grown increasingly wealthy, and the poor have grown increasingly poor.

The reason we pay taxes is to support our American civilization. With those statistics above, the conclusion is that the wealthy, though they pay a significant percentage of all tax revenue, are not paying enough to support what our civilization needs, and have not contributed enough on their own, thus the government must raise taxes. This would help solve our revenue problem.

Simultaneously, we must also do an inventory of what our civilization needs so that we can raise those taxes only as much as is absolutely necessary. This would solve our spending problem.

All of you brainwashed Obama haters, keep spitting your venom. The fact of the matter is that opinion polls show that the house republicans are the most despised part of the Government, and that includes polling from tea party members. As unbelievable as it may seem, the Tea Party favors Obama over house republicans by a 33% to 27% margin when it comes to attempts at creating jobs.

Not even the Democrats are voting for his budget or bills without a major overhaul because they don't want to defend a vote for his "plans" to their constituents. His administration is being hammered about putting American's on kill list, their role in Solyndra fiasco, Stimulus I that didn't work, persistent high unemployment, more Americans in poverty, on and on.

The seagull in chief flies around America, squawks in front of the cameras, makes a mess of things, then flies out.

A couple of you claim to have a "business" then go on to say things such as "ObamaCare will save us 30%" and so on. You are clearly NOT in business if such a comment is made (or will not STAY in business). ObamaCare is the PRIMARY reason why employment has stagnated. To require a business to pay a larger share of the healthcare of their employees (and a more "robust" requirement as well) simply has scared businesses silly. I own two businesses and also offer business consultation to businesses. Let me just tell you what a couple of my customers (i.e. other businesses) have said or done since Obama has been elected:

1) One business (with 60 employees) has told me he will layoff 12 workers if ObamaCare is not repealed. Why? Because within ObamaCare the law states that if a business has 50 or more employees they must offer various paid health insurance. This company told me he will be BELOW 50 before ObamaCare is fully implemented in 2014.

2) Another business created a "subsidiary" in Singapore with all international business going through the subsidiary. Why? Because the U.S. has the 2nd highest corporate tax rates in the world. Creating another company in Singapore saved him over $1 million in taxes.

3) Another business told me if Obama raises taxes he will liquidate his company and purchase real estate in the U.S. and in the Caribbean. Why? Because real estate is an asset but NO TAXES are paid until the property is sold. If capital gains and income taxes go up he doesn't feel the continued risk is worth the reduced reward.

4)Another business (a small group of doctors) are already planning that if ObamaCare is not repealed and is implemented they will stop taking Medicare patients. Why? Because there are mandated Medicare cuts in ObamaCare and somehow Obama thinks doctors will simply say "Oh well..." and take the lower payments. No, many doctors will stop taking Medicare patients.

Anybody who states ObamaCare will SAVE money just doesn't understand healthcare, business, or how an economy works. Basic Economics 101 states if you INCREASE the demand for a good (healthcare in this example) but DECREASE the supply of that same good (i.e. some doctors will leave the field due to mandated gvmt price ceilings) then the quantity of the good supplied decreases and the price increases.

I have great respect for what Steve Jobs did for this country and at the same time I have to remember where the IPod, IPhone and I'm sure I missed a few are built. Not made in America. RIP Steve we will miss you.

The funny thing is I voted for Obama, but I actually consider all issues at hand at judging him. Relating to the Wall Street protesters, of course they are going to back Obama, but he had there vote already so there is no difference. Liberals and Republicans do not choose the president ever. Prevent another recession??? He said his last stimulus would get us out of the recession and prevent us from going over 8% unemployment. It is precisely because of the complete lack of oversight during the Bush administration that 99% of us need the Dodd/Frank bill, in order to protect us from the other 1% who think nothing of putting personal financial gain ahead of ethics, laws, or the needs of people. If larceny of a 6-pack of beer can get some luckless kid a year in the County jail, what kind of sentence would be appropriate for someone who knowingly cooks the books to falsely inflate their economic numbers for 8 years, or someone who sells a Trillion in fraudulent securities then bets short against those same securities? How about we just lock 'em up and weld the door shut???

The reason that America needs a government jobs bill is because of the economic policies of GW, where half of the nation was savaged so that the other half could live really well. The stimulus did stem what had been 600K lost jobs per month when GW left office, but too much of it was devoted to tax cuts and not enough to actual job creation. The stimulus did get a whole lot of badly-needed road work done that had been neglected under GW too. If we are at all serious about getting America back to work then we need to act to exclude or heavily tariff cheap foreign imports that are unfairly killing our jobs, and we need to heavily penalize the practice of offshoring our jobs too.

Since Wall St keeps whining for another round of quantitative Fed money printing to bail them out, again, what would be so wrong with a targeted jobs program to benefit Main St and its employees, or maybe even a bailout of consumer debt? If consumer confidence is not improved and quickly, we are going to slip back into recession, in a business environment which already has for the most part not recovered from the last recession. With the amount of government layoffs due to a lack of funding, another recession could quickly raise our unemployment numbers into the high teens or even over 20%, which would create a snowball effect where revenues and spending at all levels of the economy would fall, thereby reducing tax revenues and greatly increasing our deficits and debt and forcing even more draconian governmental layoffs. Another deep recession at this stage of the game could very well spell the end of the American empire and the American Dream for most of us, with very little chance of a full recovery, ever.

Perhaps that is what some of these free-market types want so badly though; a complete inability of government to interfere in their affairs or take any steps to protect the vast majority of us from the excesses of obtaining unrestricted profit at any and all costs no matter who gets stomped-on in the process. If low tax rates and trickle-down economics work so well, then our economy should be the strongest it has ever been right now. Instead, the wealthiest 2% just keep getting richer while the needs of everyone else are increasingly becoming irrelevant in search of the greatest possible profit at the lowest possible cost.

You want to talk about corruption, what about Haliburton, which was almost bankrupt when GW and Cheney took office, before that secret no-bid contract to supply our Iraqi troops was written 6 full months before we even went to war there? Haliburton's stock went up over 30 points in just the first 4 years of GW and Cheney, then Haliburton paid Cheney a $20 million bonus, which was 10 times his salary as Vice-President for his entire 8 years in office. Would that constitute a conflict of interest?

Wouldn't that be too bad if Occupy America turned into a left-leaning political party that made the Tea Party look tiny? There was a Social Security trust fund when Bill Clinton left office, a Federal highway trust fund, and an FAA trust fund too. GW borrowed $2.2 Trillion from all three trust funds to attempt to mask $2.2 Trillion in budget deficits, and he was successful in cooking the books right up until the US Treasury October, 2009 Revision, after President Obama was elected, when his 8-year outright falsification was discovered. Any other stupid questions JPSOTW???

Since 1979, not only have the wealthiest 10% of Americans seen their incomes rise by 450% figured for inflation, but the bottom 70% in income have seen their average earnings fall by 40% too. In addition to the wage disparity, many middle and working-class jobs have been lost due to improved technology, as well as a more recent trend toward greatly increasing individual worker productivity while not matching productivity increases with pay increases. And, just since the end of Bill Clinton's Presidency, millions of middle-income jobs have been offshored, and not just blue-collar jobs either. It is little wonder that consumer spending per person has continued to drop off, and it will continue to do so until we get serious about making foreign trade fair to our own companies and their workers, instead of pursuing foreign trade policies seemingly designed to reap the greatest possible profit at the lowest possible cost no matter who gets hurt in the process.

One very certain way to greatly improve our GDP numbers would be to enact trade restraints against countries that refuse to honor our own standards of worker's rights and safety laws, as well as our own standard of environmental protection too. If we enact barriers against unfair foreign trade, we will bring large numbers of jobs back onshore, and while consumer prices will rise, so will wages, and so too will tax collections, which will eventually enable us to balance our Federal, State, and local jurisdiction budgets and enable governments to begin to hire once again too.

It is really hard to believe that anyone thought that offshoring our jobs to the lowest possible bidder who was willing to grossly violate our standards even moreso than the next guy would end-up in the best interests of most Americans. So what if the prices that we pay at our warehouse retail stores keep falling if our wages fall right off with them, along with the amount of taxes we have to pay that support our government too? Basically there is a direct line between the enactment of various unrestricted free-trade policies and where we find ourselves today, with many consumers not earning enough to maintain a level of purchasing necessary to sustain economic growth, let alone staunch government deficits and layoffs too.

So, if you want a redesign of our foreign trade policies where fairness to America's workers and their families is the primary consideration, then vote Democrat. In fact, if one side or the other does not have a 65% majority in the Senate, and the House, the Presidency, and a majority in the Supreme Court, nothing is going to get done, as these last three years are a grand testament to. If your primary motive is how much money that you can amass no matter who you have to step on to get there, might I recommend moving to China, where I hear that clawing your way to the top and stomping on the needs, hopes, and dreams of your neighbor is a respected way of life there.

If crack cocaine addition isn't good for America, can extreme wealth addiction in a system where we are supposed to have a limited money supply be any better for us??? A year ago the Democrats passed a bill in the House and sent to the Senate a mandate that would have enacted serious penalties for companies that tried to offshore American jobs, and the 41 Republican Senators stood together and filibustered it, voting instead to continue to allow American companies to offshore our jobs without fear of any consequence of doing so. Have the House Republicans who were elected on a job creation platform done or proposed anything to create jobs other than to try to pass even more unrestricted free trade policies that will allow American companies to steal even more of our jobs and sell them to the lowest bidder?

I'm sure that when you voted Republican in 2010 that you thought that the kind of job creation that the Republicans were proposing were jobs here at home, and not jobs overseas in places where their average wages will act to continue to undercut our own. Like I said before, vote Democrat if you want the US to return to a land where the needs, hopes, and dreams of the average American are a primary consideration instead of a barrier standing in the way of making more money than the next guy. Once our employment markets stabilize and begin to favor middle-income job creation, then consumer spending will return, along with the kind of economic stability that many of us miss so much.

the effective Federal tax rate on the next 99% was 9.48%. So while the top 1%
makes 25.8 times more taxable money than what each one of the next 99% makes,
they only pay 2 ½ times more in taxes. Is this class warfare? Is this fair? Is

Are you stupid or something? Using your figures, that would mean that the top 1% would pay 65 times more than the other 99% (not 2.5 times) even though they make only 25.8 times more. Is that fair?

By the way, your numbers are skewed. The top 1% pay at an effective rate of 18%. This is because of capital gains is taxed at a much lower rate than income tax and the wealthy take advantage of this fact. Another reason that Buffet, Soros and Obama are talking about only the income tax so he can protect his "Fat Cat" donors.

This is something Republicans have never had so stop whining, each party has to work with the other to pass bills, that has always been the case.

By the way, 25.8 x 9.48% = 244.6%. Even if the wealthy did get taxed at that rate ( where the wealthy would have to give 2.4x the money they earn to the federal government ) it would do little to put a dent in the deficit.

I haven't been on here long enough to be say out loud what I thought of some of the past Presidents. I know that there have been a lot of "in my pocket" type attitudes that I have seen over the past 30 years. I don't like the fact that America people don't have a voice and the ones that you do hear I dont' hear too much for America just a whole lot of for Me Me Me.

Devalued currency? I would blame GW's right-hand man Bernanke for that myself, along with a bunch of whiney stockbrokers who can't seem to make much in the way of profits without the Fed throwing lots more printed money on the fire down on Wall St.

Powerful unions? The American labor union movement is weaker now than it has ever been since World War II ended in 1945, which also means that the American worker is in a weaker bargaining position then they have been in since the end of the Great Depression too. Remember when our economy was strong and stable back in the 1960s when we had both very strong labor unions and a 70% top tax rate???

Anyone remember that crazy 350-point swing on the Dow in the last half-hour on Monday, where a few bank stocks did really, really well while most other stocks did not? Gee, I wonder what that did to the shorts??? It probably wiped-out more wealth than it created, not to mention the damage to investor confidence. My guess is that Ol' Bernanke printed-up another $100 Million and dumped it into a few bank stocks, in a last-ditch effort to rescue a few cronies, thereby devaluing our Dollar a little bit more.

Basically anyone would have to be insane to invest in the markets with the level of behind-the-scenes corruption going on there nowadays. What do you bet that the real problem isn't Greece, it is us, of our own making??? Blaming it on Greece is just a convenient excuse to distract us from the real issues.

How long was it between when Al Franken was finally seated and Senator Kennedy's death? A few weeks? Which is all of the filibuster-proof majority that the Democrats had, despite winning 60 seats in the Senate in the 2008 elections. Republicans controlled both the House and Senate during GW's first six years in office too, during which time an average of over $400 Billion was borrowed each of those six years from the SS Trust Fund. Actually, the balance in the Social Security Trust Fund as of the end of December of 2010 was $2.429 Trillion, and the fund actually ended the year $86 Billion ahead of where they started the year too. Yes, all but $200 Billion of this figure is in US Treasury bonds, the result of previous Presidents all the way back to Johnson borrowing from the trust fund to cook their reported budget numbers. Just reporting the facts.

Also, according to the October, 2009 US Treasury Revision, President Clinton did indeed have a single year with a small $18 billion budgetary surplus, even figured for borrowing, which beats GW's best year by about $175 Billion. President Clinton's budget surplus was the first since the Eisenhower administration.

So, the entire time frame between July 7th and August 25th of 2009 was the only time that the Democrats, who won 60 seats in the Senate in the 2008 elections, enjoyed a filibuster-proof majority of 60 votes.

As for Jeffords, you are only partially correct, as Jeffords did not become a Democrat when he left the Republican Party, rather he became an independent. Furthermore, Jeffords voting record as a Republican was much more moderate than the average Republican too. However, from the day of inauguration in January, 2001 through May 24th, 2001, Jim Jeffords was a member of the Republican Party, who did enjoy a 1-vote majority with Dick Cheney casting a tie-breaking vote.

No, if you read my writing, I never said nor implied that GW was the only President ever to borrow from the SS Trust Fund. However, it is a fact that GW borrowed over half of all the money that all the Presidents from Johnson to Obama have so far borrowed, which I feel is a rather sorry statistic.

Remember Jimmy Carter? His entire 4-year budget deficit including his internal borrowing was less than 1/14th of what GW's deficit including his trust fund borrowing was, even though GW was handed a budgetary surplus the year previous to his inauguration, which Jimmy Carter was not!!!

Speaking of Obamacare, I have a "pre-existing" condition through no fault of my own thanks to the medical community, and can't get medical insurance ever since my last job ended and my Cobra ran out, (until 2014 under present law), even though I was covered non-stop from the time of the medical issue that eventually cost me my health care insurance. So frankly, Obamacare works really well for me. It also works well so far for my girlfriend, who is now able to keep her two youngest sons on her health insurance until they either get a job with healthcare benefits or turn age 26, whatever comes first.

I would have vastly preferred socialized medicine myself to Obamacare, though I feel that what the Democrats passed is a step in the right direction. In 2001 my health insurance was $127/month with no deductible and no copays except for name-brand drugs. In 2009, that figure was up to $430/month, with a $2000 annual deductible, and $40 copays for everything. What was so great about the system that we had that people like you want to protect so badly? Between 2001 and 2009 my gross income only increased by 20%, so why should my out-of-pocket cost for medical insurance have increased by 629% during the same period?

Talk about "death panels", what is an HMO??? All that HMO's do is try to reduce their costs to improve their bottom line, which definitely includes restricting patient access to expensive drugs and procedures too. I have to have a $450 monthly series of blood tests thanks to a couple of dentists and an oral surgeon, which Kaiser outright refused to pay for during the two years that my boss had them as his insurance carrier too. Frankly, my 20% raise between 2001 and 2009 was more than eaten up by my increase in costs for medical insurance, deductibles, and copays. What is so great about that fact that all of you Obama haters want to go back to???

All of the rabid opposition to having employers include health care insurance for their employees is frankly bizarre, considering that well more than half of the nation's employers already did provide their employee's health care insurance even before Obamacare was passed. Providing an employees healthcare insurance is nothing highly unusual these days. There were companies in the 1920s that provided their employees health insurance as a fringe benefit. If you are an employer do you think that it should be your right not to have to provide your employees healthcare insurance? Don't you just reduce their pay a little bit to pay for it? That is what I did when I was an employer.

For the vast majority of patients, Obamacare will be a big improvement over the system that existed beforehand. If you are wealthy and you want a better standard of care, you are always welcome to pay out-of-pocket at the Mayo Clinic. For people like me, without Obamacare, we can't even get healthcare insurance, which sure doesn't help when it is time to try to find another job either. I thought that discrimination was supposed to be illegal in this country, but I guess that discrimination based on whether or not someone is a pre-existing condition is alive and well. Come 2014 hopefully the practice of discriminating against people with pre-existing medical conditions will end once and for all.

BobB: Your post is ridiculous. First of all, why should the bottom half pay $10...if they have NO taxable income, how do they pay? And, whenever they buy groceries, gas, etc., they ARE paying some taxes. No one gets away from paying taxes totally. As for the wealthy...sure they pay more taxes, but they make more money. But, also, they have the money to pay top-flight CPA's to find those loopholes which allow them to get out of paying a great deal of taxes. They may be in the 35% tax group; however, according to records, very few of them pay even 20% (and oftimes less) of their income in taxes.

As for people who get a tax refund each year....it's only because they have not claimed enough deductions on their pay checks. My husband and I both declare 10 deductions in our paycheck....we get very little back in a refund when we file. We'd rather have that extra money in our paychecks each pay period than to let the government get it and use it without paying us interest on it and then refund it back to us after we file! We also itemize wherever possible, but, again, we always come out fairly even....we rarely pay anything (or very little) and we don't get anything back. We pay our fair share of taxes each pay period....just enough to cover our yearly tax percentage....no more; no less.

I'm willing to compromise, Bob. I'd be happy for the poor to pay some small amount of taxes, if we also raise taxes on the wealthy. Shared sacrifice.

Im curious, just when were the 41 members of Obamas administration going to 'pay their fair share' of BACK taxes totalling almost 900k? Or how about Janet Napalitano's TSA, who's organizations members owe over 37 MILLION in back taxes. Then there is members of the Dept of Justice, who owes a combined 14.3 Million. My current tax rate is about 30% and as you can tell, I'm no millionaire, because I'm paying way more tax (percentage wise) than they do.

I have one, small, modest home. My wife and I each have a Toyota. Her's is a 2005 mini-van and mine is a 2007 Yaris. Not exactly luxury autos.

NO vacation home in Vail, no cottage on the beach, no apartment in Paris. We don't drive a porsche or a mercedes or a cadillac. We make less than $100k a year combined. Our income will be less than half that amount when we retire in a couple of years, if we're able. Our retirement investment accounts are well under $200K. In other words we are middle class.

I'd be perfectly happy to see the Kochs and Buffets and Murdochs of this world pay 30% of THEIR fortunes in taxes. But they don't. Thanks to Ronald Reagan and the GOP they pay far less (percentage wise) than we do and that's not fair.

Get it? If I'm paying 30% on every penny we make regardless of the source, so should they. Period. No loopholes, no shelters, no legal mumbo jumbo.

And, if they are making over a Million Dollars a year they can afford to pay a surtax on their wealth. That's fair as well. Ok, so they'll have to cut back. They'll have to wait till next year to buy that new porsche. Well, we've all got to suffer a little for the good of the country.

So explain to me how I am wrong again? Even with the right amount of deductions if you are making 20 grand a year and have a kid (you know single mom with a single child working at a fast food place) you will get more money back then what you paid into the system because of the tax code. That is just how it works and personally I think it needs to be overhauled.

Even Warren Buffet paid $8 MILLION in taxes last year, regardless of his tax bracket. You take the 39.5% in federal income tax that I will have to pay once Obama repeals the current tax law (where 35% is the top bracket), then add 9% for NY State income tax, then add 4% for NYC income tax, then add Obama and Reid's new 5.4% surtax = 58%! While I am way far from being in that 10% I am definately in that 43% that pays the other 27% of all federal income taxes. So according to you that 10% still doesn't pay their share? Don't forget, unions represent a very SMALL percentage of the American workforce. And that downward trendline of membership, while somewhat stable over the past few years, has continued downward for decades. At the same time, workplace injuries and / or deaths have also continued to make a wonderful downward trend over time. I will not say unions have not influenced the trends because many high risk jobs are performed by union workers. But it would be silly to say statistics would reverse conditional to a lower union headcount.

I have some insight into this. When I was discharged form our military after quite a few years of service, I recieved a job offer from at&t. Since it was a good offer I accepted it. The first day i showed up I had two orientations. In a 45 min run through from my supervisor in which he said 2 things 1. Dont steal our money and 2. Dont mess with the women and you will have a job for life (little did he know at the time). The second meeting lasted 3 hours. It was the CWA AFL/CIO meeting with 1 union local pres and 4 stewards. The single most agonizing meeting ever. About a month later it was requested to my supervisor that the Steward needs a 30 min union break to talk to me. Where he explained to me that I was working too hard and I was making my Union brothers ans sisters"look bad" He gave me a few sheets of paper telling me exactly how many "widgets" I could do in an hour. It was embarrassing to say the least, as a former military man It baffled me. I was part of 3 national strikes, at each one we were paid $20 for four hours of picketing and that was it. While all the union people received their full pay and benefits. Each time I lost about $4000 in pay and in one strike we lost our Benefits (the strike was longer) We made concessions on every contract which costs us more money and were told by the Union president that it was the best deal they could do. I was the first person in Ct to leave at&t and on my exit meeting with the Union people I let them know why.

I'm originally from what was once a union town and what is still a democratic stronghold, thank goodness, and idiots who don't understand what the unions have brought to the table in terms of wages, safety issues, not being under the thumb of the employer, etc., can simply go to hell IMO. The Unionized workforce in America is around 11%. It's not because of the lack of oppertunity to join either. It's because we choose not to be in a union.

These were small companies, and by small I mean 100 or less employee's, yes small but big enough for the unions to put a target on because that is 100 more people they could collect dues from. Both companies were in Michigan (Detroit area) Where the beloved UAW has had a strangle hold for decades. So any union around here has plenty of backing (meaning intimidation). This also happened in the 90's when the economy was booming and unions needed to choke out as much of the responsible business owners as possible. Without a responsible business owner the union is in hog heaven.

I think everyone should listen to our president. The economy needs for us to pull together not divide. Forget whether you are Republican or Democrat we need to throw everything we have at getting people back to work. Even if the jobs bill helps a few thousand go to back to work, then pass it. Corporations can't hire, not because of uncertainty, but because no one has any money to purchase what they are making. Worry about the workers first and if the government has to throw in some money to do it, then so be it. This bill will help the private sector also, but you have to start somewhere, and personally if this doesn't work, then try something else. But don't just say "no". If our economy picks up then worry about whether corporations should get lower taxes. But let's put people first and corporations second. I have worked in management for GE and I work now for a small business. Taxes are not what either worry about.

Fair is asking all Americans to contribute in restoring economic growth. Slash the discretionary spending budget across the board to get the $447 billion in funds. After all doesn't discretionary also mean optional? Over the favorite 10 year time span promoted by the government, this is only $47 billion/yr.

KRT is correct. Except for the term entitlements. SS, medicalementsre/medicaid and disability are not entitlements. The state I live in is very red, and most of the state is rural and uneducated. Most of the state is at poverty level or below, yet they continually to vote in those who continue to hurt them. I just don't understand their thinking. Only two cities(two largest) won the democratic vote in the last election. It is baffling.

Lynn...I think you are generalizing a bit too much when you belittle anyone getting entitlements and call them uneducated. As Americans we should protect those safety nets in place - I'm assuming you are referring to Unemployement Benefits, food stamp programs, Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security??? I'd like to think I'm an educated American - I have a BA Degree and I own a small business that provides for 9 families. And to bring a point home using your criterior, those people who are using those entitlements the most are coming from states like Mississippi and Alabama (Red States) These people routinely support Republican policies and vote against the very programs that help them the most. If you research this, you'll find that states like MS and AL take in much more in federal assistance than they give back in taxes to the government. As a small businees owner who pays my fair share of corporate taxes, benefits and other costs I can assure you that we NEED the benefits the Affordabe HealthCare Act provides and we certainly will benefit from the President's job bill proposals. I just think you need to hear from more people like me because I am out there in the trenches and all the misinformation being tossed about by obstructionists just is not true! What is it your company does? I am in construction and I can tell you that this stimulis will be the death of the small businessman in construction.

Here is the logic behind my thinking, please explain where I am wrong (because I truly hope I am wrong) But, when a construction job comes about it goes out for bid to the general contractor and the sub-contractors. So when a Stimulis job comes about, it will have every contractor and sub going after it in a 3 state radius. Well to get the job a company has to either bid at cost or make a mistake. The only companies who can afford to opperate on such low margins are your large multi-state conglomorates. The small business man cannot get work in this field. If it is not a stimulis job you have a very good chance of all the other companies not finding out about it and bid it accordingly. But the stimulis jobs last time were advertised (The few that made it past the red tape of the states,) everyone heard about it. Unless they can release all the jobs at once and not let the states hold anything up (as well as the EPA) then and only then will it work.

Unlike the republican party of today, he was willing to compromise in order to try and preserve the Union. He was a pragmatist regarding slavery and only when forced to go to war did he solidify his anti-slavery stance. May I ask you a question? How do you feel about the presidency of Ronald Reagan? My reason for asking this is simple. He raised taxes several times and grew the deficit. Would Reagan have stood a chance in today's republican party? So many people are quick to invoke the name of the messiah - Reagan and yet if he ran today he would be considered a liberal. How does a republican reconcile that?
