I would seriously consider Mitt Romney for President but I would NOT seriously consider Newt Gingrich.

When I was in Montana in the early 1990s on vacation; there was someone there who was about as zany as Gingritch as Romney would call it. The dude was trying to convince me that the gov't had put hidden tracking devices in $1 bills as a means to try to monitor people as they used cash to make their purchases.

Now the irony is that TODAY there is a certain amount of tracking that COULD be done with credit card purchases, given all the transactions are now electronic; but CASH in the EARLY 90S? Umm; yeah, I think the guy was a member of the so-called Patrior Network, who among other things wanted another Wako like showdown with the FBI, and figured that the Constitutional amendment establishing the income tax is unconstututional, so it isn't necessary to follow the law there. Yes, that would be about the same level of "zanieness" Gingritch would follow. If he was voted President, perhaps Gingritch could chose McVeigh as his running mate.... Those 2 would complement each other.

A president cannot spend a penny unless Congress passes it. That is why Newt took the heat over the shut down. Newt figured Clinton would have to sign the budget, but Newt didn't have the votes to override the veto. Clinton was smart enough to understand the problem and vetoed the bill. Because Newt didn't have any alternate legislation, with no spending approval from the House, down went the government.

It helps a lot when voting to understand who can do what.

Until the strenghthening of the CRA in 1999, the Fed had instituted really low down payments, income requirements, - but the banks didn't want to do that, so the fed rulled that they had to make a minimum number of loans under those terms or they could not be involved with the Fed banking system. If they don't participate in the fed - they don't exist.

The CRA change in 1999 gave the fed the teeth to investigate finance by just being alledged to have discriminated against the low income (code word for minorities). Banks don't give loans to people who cannot pay i.e. the 0% down, high debt ratio because the know the failure rates are too high to remain profitable. But because the fed can put them out of business if they don't, they did.

What would you do if you had a car that you knew wouldn't last too long? Run it until it drops? Sell it? Use duct tape to keep it running and hope it keeps going until it is paid for? The popular thing to do is sell it, and hope it runs long enough that the new owner doesn't come back on you. THAT is what happened.

MarineDoc, I really like Mitt Romney. I have read his plans and they are practical and most importantly they are feasible. I have heard the complaints about him-he's out of touch with the common man, he's boring and he's one of the 1%. I am a working stiff and I will never be rich but I have bet 1,000,000 dollars on occasion. All it means is I feel strongly about something and I am absolutely sure that I will not be proven wrong. Huntsman really is the Republicans best chance. Some health care is better than no health care. Ending the war is better than starting a war. Catching Bin Laden is better than leaving him out there. Ending Don't As Don't Tell is more honest and humane than not ending it. And all you people whining about taxes should really shut up and THINK about what taxes are FOR: taxes are for roads and services and schools and police and fire departments and libraries and for the good of the nation--that's right, you've got to stop thinking that because you make it during the good times, the game ends there. Money isn't invented by the rich for the rich. It comes from the community, from a social system in which all people (IDEALLY) have the opportunity to work and enjoy the resources. And in a country with our resources, it would be a huge step backward in moral evolution NOT to take care of our poor, our disenfranchised, our children, our elderly, our sick. THAT's the spirit that has made this country the pinnacle of civilization and the greatest country that has ever been.

Local government and schools used to pay for all the police, fire, and teachers. Salaries and benefits cost 40 - 50% of budget. Today, after unions were permitted too much freedom to negotiate, local budgets are now experiencing Salary and Benefit costs in excess of 75% of the local budgets after another round of police, fire, and teachers are laid off.

Federally Social Security started out as only a couple of percentage points, and has risen to over 12.4% of wages (6.2 you pay, 6.2 your employer pays - 12.4 if you are self employed) Since 1969 our fed has been tapping SS and leaving IOU's that they at this point can never repay. And you are telling people to stop whining? WOW!

Now be honest--Don't Ask Don't Tell was a Democratic step TOWARD a more honest and just treatment of all soldiers than the outright prejudice which existed prior to that--and is still praised and pined for by mainly Republican politicians (Rick Perry for example). And in overseeing its eradication, President Obama has 1) done what he promised and 2) done a good thing. Why can't you accept that?

Across the country states have repeatedly had to bail out local governments in fiscal crisis, and education has been the most important ping-pong ball in that particular tournament. Your glib and patronizing contention that "unions were permitted too much freedom to negotiate" is a WHINE. At least that's how it seems to someone who believes that unions, for all that they are flawed (because they are human), nevertheless represent one of the great strengths of this country, a check to corporate and even government exploitation of the working middle class (and are you hinting that teachers and firemen and police are overpaid?? WOW is right!). Unions are also one of the factors in the evolution--not merely moral--of this country as the dominant and exemplary economy in the world throughout the 20th century.

Now, you want to complain about the long-term rise in Social Security costs--what about the even more dramatic increase in the draining of Federal resources by the Military? You leave that out. I see your WOW, and raise you a WOW.

The GOP wants to lower income taxes for the wealthy and raise income and payroll taxes on the poor and middle class. This is the exact policy which led to the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror; the poor paysans paying a much greater percentage of their total income than the nobility, who were "above" taxation.

Romney wants to be the first mormon POTUS because he was told to do so by the elders of the LDS. Have you seen the billboard blitz that mormons are "normal?" It is all over Denver. Someone is spending a lot of money to convince the electorate not to fear mormons. We have yuletide parties with our friends and family and remember that the "reason for the season" is the winter solstace and the 10s of thousands of year's old celebration that the days are getting shorter and that warm weather and spring are approaching. We go hunting and enjoy the crisp winter air. We work in soup kitchens to help the poor and not because "god" sez to do it but because it is the right thing to do when it is as cold as hades outside.

As to "nothing better to do." We are trying to educate a few misinformed Americans so they vote in thier own best interests rather than in the interests of the rich corporations or he filthy rich top 1%.

Mitt had the entire LDS business organization behind him when he wenta lookin for converts. He was a govenor's son for "Pete's sake" (hey Mitt said that line too!) Do you think the LDS elders were not watching out for Mittens the entire time? I worked in a foreign country building schools and clinics for 2 years and it was not with the peace corp, and it for sure was not with any "religion." Nope, just cause it makes sense to help out those who might need it once in awhile. People have watched the debates and have seen that Gingrich has much more mental agility than the media questioners and the other candidates. He may or may not be an honorable man, but he is no dope. Too bad the only other candidates about whom that can be said are Huntsman and Paul. The rest are lucky to have made it through college (including Romney, who dropped out of Stanford).

Gingrich is perhaps half as smart as he things he is. Unfortunately, he is unlikable and arrogant, as well as provably dishonest and selfish. Whatever peoples' feelings about President Obama's job approval, people overwhelmingly like him personally, and think of him as honest and decent.

At this point, it's pretty much a win-win for moderate Democrats and independents. If Romney gets the nomination and wins, he's a moderate, progressive-leaning conservative who will probably do a decent job. If Newt gets the nomination, then Obama gets a second term.

Marie: get a clue for heaven's sake. States by law have to balance their budgets and that's exactly what Mitt did, including RAISING taxes and fees to do it. He didn't do it by finding "inefficiencies". He slashed, he burned and he raised taxes and fees dramatically. There is actually a reason conservatives don't trust him.

AP---That's a hige LIE!!! Romney never raised taxes while Governor of Massachusetts! He enforced the taxes that were already in place that people had been using loopholes to get around. The banks had been getting away with not paying their taxes and hiding money in real estate for years under democrat governors. It led to a huge deficit and the state was going bankrupt. Romney said no more of that! He even enforced it retroactively and made them pay up because the state and people were suffering from these loopholes and the deception. I don't blame him a bit...if i'm forced to pay my taxes, then others who are hiding their money better be made to pay those taxes too.

Mr. Norquist sez that eliminating loopholes IS raising taxes. When Romney "enforced it retroactively" he got more money IN TAXES for past fiscal years than had been paid IN TAXES during those years. So if X amount of money had been paid IN TAXES during any particular year and Romney's "no more of that" meant that X + MORE money was paid IN TAXES then he "elevated" the money brought in, or he "heightened" the revenue captured, or he "biggerfied" the moola to be spent by government, but you are right he sure did not "raise" taxes. Do you go to church with him or work for him or what?
